Have you ever rewatched a beloved movie as an adult and then been shocked, absolutely shocked by the behavior of the parents in it? A great example is The Parent Trap (both versions) in which two parents choose to abandon one of the children because they don't like one another. Today we are getting into which pop culture representations of parents do and don't hold up with Andie Mitchell,  and Sabrina Kohlberg, the hosts of Pop Culture Moms. We're talking problematic parents and awkward parenting storylines. I also get them to go deep into a very important subject—hot TV dads. When did sex become so serious? Artist and filmmaker Numa Perrier asks this question not because she doesn't know the answer, but because she wants to engage in the power of the erotic to encompass a fuller human experience, with not only a seriousness of vision but also intentional and inherent playfulness. Her first feature-length film, Jezebel, premiered last year at SXSW to glowing reviews after developing the script through the Tribeca Film Institute's Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women's Filmmaker Program. Shot in just 10 days, her semi-autobiographical film follows 19-year-old Tiffany as she starts to work as a cam girl. Perrier joined Dr. Terri Francis in the studio during her campus visit for the film series Numa Perrier: The Politics of Pleasure in September of 2019, to discuss Perrier's early artistic beginnings, the legitimacy of sex work as work, Audre Lorde, Paris, and how art is borne out of memory and lived experiences. Topics Discussed: 0:00-8:10 – Introductions with a reading from Audre Lorde's essay, “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power” and a trailer for Numa's Perrier's Jezebel 8:10-11:20 – “When did sex become so serious?” and reclaiming the playfulness and intimacy of sex. 11:30-15:45 - "anti-artistic upbringing", her history in the adoptive care system, and coming into herself as an artist. 15:55-27:45 - Relationship with adoptive mother, questioning her own femininity, processing grief through her art, reconnecting with her sister through filmmaking, and being artistically vulnerable. 28:00-32:40 - Life in Paris, Louise Bourgeoise, and Nicola L. 32:40-39:30 - Early Internet, life as sex worker, and the pornography tech boom, criminalization of digital sex work. 39:50-45:10 - Conversation on Spike Lee and Suzan Lori Park's Girl 6 and how it relates to her experience as a sex worker. Audre Lorde and her quote “The power you are not using, is being used against you” and how it relates to her own firsthand experiences. 45:10-54:25 - The shifting climate in the film industry for black women, Black and Sexy TV, her own independent path as a creative, mentorship, the commitment to writing Jezebel, the fear of standing behind her own branding. 54:50-1:04:40 - Jezebel, the zero tolerance and transgressive attitude amongst her and her peers breaking into mainstream institutions and supporting each other and “fucking it up”. To learn more about Rhonda check out https://linktr.ee/iamrhondamorman Rhonda Morman is a NAACP nominated Best-Supporting actress and Los Angeles native known for her role in the NAACP award-winning stage play, Sunday Mourning (2012). Rhonda has overcome adversity and defied odds since the age of seven when she tragically suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. But God had other plans. After being confined to a wheelchair and told that she would never walk again, she miraculously re-took her first steps at the age of eleven: steps that led to the entertainment business. This same spitfire determination that fueled Rhonda as an adolescent continues to propel her forward even today. Her dream began to materialize when she was accepted into the Van Nuys High School of Performing Arts, where she acquired the foundation of a promising acting career. And the stage is where she developed her acting chops. Soon Rhonda became involved with stage productions such as Body Language, Momma Christine's Colored Girls and Sweet Evalina. Since then, she has starred in prominent theatrical stage play roles such as For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf, Love Buddies, The Conversation, Blue God, Nylons, Angry Insecure Men, Save Us and The Things That Make Men Cry, just to name a few. Rhonda's directorial debut for the world premiere stage play, His Dreams Her Goals (2013), which is currently on Amazon Prime. This paved the way for her directing role in the NAACP Theater Festival in 2014. Another notable achievement marked in Rhonda's career was the co-production of the 2011 political-comedic film, The Average American, where she also played the lead. She had the pleasure of experiencing this film's acceptance into multiple film festivals while being broadcast, nationally, on network television. She became a master of balancing her talents and time by becoming a second assistant director or producer on several television and film projects such as Back Then and The Sweetest Heir. When not serving as an assistant director or producer, Rhonda honed her acting craft with roles in television shows such as, The Secret Closet, Unofficially:Home, and In The Cut (Bounce TV). She is as fascinated with short films as she is with television and theater. She successfully filmed several short films including Past Tense, Silent Screams, Paradise Inn, Conflicted, Brakedown, and The Proposal, which earned her a nomination as Best Leading Actress in the Charlotte Film Festival (2016). Beyond the stage, film, and television, Rhonda has also been involved in several industrial films, commercials, and print ads. She has expanded her expertise to the web series realm by taking on roles in Wendy + Julian, a web series produced by Dennis Dortch of Black & Sexy TV, and The Choir, a web series written and produced by Issa Rae and Alright TV. She was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the LA Webfest for her reoccurring roles for two web series, What Men Want, and Black Boots, winning the award for the latter. More recently, she starred in the feature films, Bluest Moon (Amazon Prime), CainAbel (Amazon Prime), OLE Bryce and Stolen Breath the Truth Revealed. Rhonda also had supporting roles in feature films such as Her Little Secret, The Choir Director, Throwback Holiday and The Runners. Bringing more light to an amazing journey, she played the role of Delphine, an heroin addict, opposite of Loretta Devine in The Lost Souls Cafe, written and directed by Donald Welch, which

How 'Normal People' Turned A Quiet Love Story Into An Epic, Sexy TV Show

Bustle

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2020 5:13

There is a lot of nakedness in Hulu's Normal People, both physically and emotionally. As two Irish teens stumble through passionate, imperfect sex, you feel as if you've been allowed an intimate look at two human beings' most private selves. Marianne is wry, bookish, and self-assured, unconcerned with others' opinions of her yet desperate for the love she can't find within herself; Connell is deeply intellectual and sheepishly charming, frequently stymied by his insecurity and propensity to overthink. The two begin having clandestine hook-ups and fall secretly in love, separated by the hierarchies of social class and high school cliques. They feel for each other profoundly but often fail to verbalize it, resulting in a prolonged and torrid love affair propelled more by what isn't said than what is. That unspoken tension made translating Sally Rooney's introspective 2018 novel into a television series especially difficult. But the show doesn't shy away from silence. Whereas the book was guided by Marianne and Connell's revealing narration, Hulu's adaptation relies on their physicality, punctuating limited dialogue with lingering close-ups that capture each ache in studied detail. The perspective shifts readily from person to person, but is at times pointedly obscured: you see an earlobe, a shoulder, the back of someone's head. "You want an audience to feel like they're seeing what's really happening, but at the same time I don't like to put people at a perfect vantage point," co-director and executive producer Lenny Abrahamson tells Bustle. "That makes the viewer want to lean in and understand more." It also acts as a parallel for the miscommunications that regularly force Marianne and Connell apart, at first because they're young and afraid to express themselves vulnerably, and later due to deeper emotional problems that become more apparent as the story unfolds. In the absence of narration, their confusion is more sharply felt. "You can kind of drift between points of view without it being as obvious as in a piece of writing, where you absolutely know whether it's the narrator or a particular character," Abrahamson says. For stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Marianne) and Paul Mescal (Connell), the challenge was in deciphering how the characters' internal intensity would translate naturally onscreen, rather than trying to overcompensate by heightening it. "[Connell] thinks really quickly and thinks deeply about things, but he expresses that incredibly slowly, if at all," Mescal explains. Ultimately, Abrahamson and co-director Hettie Macdonald "trusted us as actors to do less." As Marianne and Connell move from high school to university and into early adulthood, they grow together like vines: weaving in and out of each other's paths, separate and yet entangled. They date other people, discover their passions, and apologize for how they've mistreated each other, eventually building a relationship rooted foremost in care and friendship, not adolescent lust. This enables them to begin articulating themselves more openly and directly. Still, it's "baby steps rather than big moments or revelations," showrunner Ed Guiney says. It's not until the penultimate episode that Marianne finally admits to Connell how much of an enigma he is to her. "I think Connell feels that Marianne knows herself and that she's confident in that, and it's the first time she's really said, 'I don't find it obvious what you want,'" Edgar-Jones says. Hours later, after confronting Marianne's abusive brother and vowing to never let anyone hurt her again, Connell makes what he wants clear. "[Their] capacity to really speak to each other ultimately overcomes the insecurities and obfuscations that have been between them in the past," Abrahamson says. "They really have arrived at a kind of understanding of who they are and what their relationship means." If Marianne and Connell's inability to say how deeply they love each other is what kept them apart for so many years, it's freely sharing it that separates them in the end. Connell is accepted into a writing program in New York City, while Marianne doesn't want to leave her life in Ireland. For the first time, they make the decision to part actively and together — willing to do what's best for each other even when it's most painful. It's an ending to a love story that's as exquisitely agonizing as its beginning — though with a little hope, it's more of an ellipsis.

She also gave some heartfelt advice to aspiring actors. This young lady is on fire and will continue to shatter the glass ceiling! Don't miss this feature! Follow: @KhalilahJoi About this Queen: Born in Georgia and raised in Hampton, Virginia, Khalilah grew up as a bonafide Southern girl—fresh-water fishing and debutante balls. With aspirations of being a broadcast journalist, she attended The University of Virginia, where she received a Bachelor's degree in English. After graduation, though, she chose The Studio Theater Acting Conservatory in Washington, D.C. over her acceptance to NYU's Graduate School of Journalism and hasn't looked back.   After a year on the east coast theater circuit, Khalilah drove across country to Los Angeles. Just two months in, she booked her first play, Don B. Welch's “The Bachelorette Party,” which was extended for what turned out to be a two-year run and a National Tour after Will Smith joined the production team. Since then, Khalilah has worked consistently as an actress, receiving a number of awards and acknowledgments. These include winning the American Black Film Festival's International Monologue Competition, winning the Best Supporting Actress SOFIE (Short-Film Award,) for her performance in the critically acclaimed “Jonestown,” winning ABC Entertainment Groups Digital Casting Competition, and winning Best Female Newcomer for her work in the hit web-series “Sexless”.   Some of her most notable roles include appearances on CBS's newest hit show, “S.W.A.T.,” as well as “Rosewood,” “Marvel's Agent Carter,” a recurring role on BET's “Being Mary Jane,” a starring role on Black and Sexy TV's “Sexless” and a recurring role in the hit spin-off  “Chef Julian.” Next on the horizon, Khalilah can be seen on Sundance Channel's upcoming show, “The Noise,” and the suspense thriller “A Violent Man,” alongside her fellow UVA alum and NFL star running back, Thomas Q. Jones. The film is slated for release in 2018.   Khalilah is grateful for the continued support and encouragement of friends and family throughout her career thus far and for each opportunity she's been given to pursue her passion. Her greatest hope is to continue to be fearless and authentic in her storytelling and to have the privilege of entertaining for many years to come. We also played, Ask My Friend With A Man--where I ask women in committed relationships what they've compromised for their relationship. (Spoiler alert, Numa gives NO hall passes.) And we played Guess Their Young, where I give Numa proper names of various baby animals and she has to guess where the baby belongs. It's hilarious and informative. Shonta' Renée is an American R&B and soul singer/songwriter born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. She discovered her passion for music at the ripe old age of 5 where she would simulate artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Anita Baker by singing along while their songs played on the radio or on records at home. She uncovered that not only could she sing, but she could also write music at the age of 10 and her writing evolved as the years went by. Shonta' didn't embark on her music career professionally until the summer of 2011 while she was in school full time at Savannah State University. Balancing school full time, she managed to independently release a single in August of 2014 titled “Mocha Man” which was released on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, and other major distribution platforms. “Mocha Man” received great feedback with its accompanying music video that peaked at over 10,000 YouTube views in a little under a month. She later released two more singles entitled “Slow Down” and “Regretful” in October of 2014. On Christmas of 2014 the track “Regretful” received placement in YouTube's sensational independent film network Black and Sexy TV's debut movie “That Guy.” Along with movie placement, the single was reviewed by 24hrmusic.com and received an 8.1 out of 10 (jubilant) in their November digital issue. Currently, Shonta' is promoting her debut EP entitled “Situationship” which was released digitally April 30, 2015 and Physically on August 15, 2015.
