Javad Shamsi on how firms adapt to sanctions.The U.S. sanctions on Iran target sectors across the country's economy, including the energy, manufacturing, and banking sectors. In addition, hundreds of Iranian companies have been designated, meaning they have been singled out with targeted sanctions. Despite this expansive sanctions regime, very few large enterprises in Iran have gone out of business, suggesting that managers at most companies found ways to adapt to sanctions pressure.Javad Shamsi is one of the first researchers to try and understand these adaptations. Last year, he published a working paper examining how publicly listed companies in Iran responded to sanctions. The paper, titled “Understanding Multi-Layered Sanctions: A Firm-Level Analysis,” uses a unique dataset composed of “transcripts and reports from board meetings of publicly traded Iranian firms.” Javad analyzed the content of these reports and made some surprising findings.Javad is pursuing his PhD in Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He did his masters in economics at Iran's famed Sharif University of Technology, often called “Iran's MIT.”The Sanctions Age is hosted by Esfandyar Batmanghelidj. About the Speaker: Tara Sepehri Far is a researcher in the Middle East and North Africa Division, where she investigates human rights abuses in Iran and Kuwait. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, she was the Deputy Director of the Human Rights in Iran Unit at the City University New York, where she worked on a project supporting the mandate of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran. In Brazil's presidential election on Sunday, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva got the highest number of votes, as expected. But the final result showed incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro just a handful of points behind the former president. And amid protests in Iran, a group of students were trapped inside the prestigious Sharif University after security guards locked them inside and chased others to a university parking lot. Similar events took place at Iranian universities in 1999 and 2009, leading to many arrests and deaths. Also, Denmark's Queen Margrethe II announced last week that the four children of her son Prince Joachim will lose their royal titles. The palace said the reasoning was to allow her grandchildren the chance to “shape their own existence.” Plus, the Common loon, known for its haunting cry across the North American wilderness, is in trouble.

Most social platforms offer mechanisms allowing users to delete their posts, and a significant fraction of users exercise this right to be forgotten. However, ironically, users' attempt to reduce attention to sensitive posts via deletion, in practice, attracts unwanted attention from stalkers specifically to those (deleted) posts. Thus, deletions may leave users more vulnerable to attacks on their privacy in general. Users hoping to make their posts forgotten face a "damned if I do, damned if I don't" dilemma.In this talk, we will look into two new proposed deletion mechanisms that provide privacy for the deletion of users.In the first approach, in the form of intermittent withdrawals, we present, Lethe, a novel solution to this problem of (really) forgetting the forgotten. If the next-generation social platforms are willing to give up the uninterrupted availability of non-deleted posts by a very small fraction, Lethe provides privacy to the deleted posts over long durations. Furthermore, we introduce Deceptive Deletion, a new decoy mechanism that minimizes the adversarial advantage. Our mechanism creates a two-player min-max game between, an adversary that seeks to classify damaging content among the deleted posts, and a challenger that employs decoy deletions to masquerade real damaging deletions.We evaluate the systems using the Twitter data samples and show that in the presence of a strong adversary our systems protect the privacy of the users' deletions. About the speaker: Mohsen Minaei is a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University working with Professor Aniket Kate. His research focuses on designing and implementing better privacy-enhancing mechanisms for content deletion and using cryptocurrencies as covert channels to bootstrap the censor circumvention tools. Prior to joining Purdue, he received his bachelor's degree from Sharif University in Tehran.He has completed three internships with the fraud detection and Xbox teams at Microsoft and one with the blockchain team at Visa Research.

After spending his childhood and teenage years in North America, he moved back to Iran to study in the Chemical Engineering program of Sharif University of Technology, the most reputable technical university in the country. Dr. Bazargan is a faculty member at the Graduate Faculty of the Environment, University of Tehran, one of the Middle East's oldest and most prestigious universities. In addition, he is a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering at K.N. Toosi University of Technology.
