Welcome to the episode 2 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. Today we feature the incredible Kim Temple - a Juno-nominated musician who wears a few different hats in the Canadian music industry. Kim is head of the publishing and sync division at Six Shooter Records, a 23-year-old women-owned and women-led company based in Toronto. She is President of High Priestess Publishing, a joint venture created in partnership with Six Shooter whose core values are firmly aligned with those of the LGBTQ2S+ and racialized artist communities. Kim is also Senior Manager of Programming & Industry Relations at Music Publishers Canada which is the non-profit national trade association for music publishers. In her role there she oversees the Women In The Studio national accelerator, designed to support and uplift female-identifying, non-binary and gender fluid producer-songwriters. She also leads international song camps and B2B trade missions in key export territories. She currently sits on the music advisory committees for City of Toronto and Ontario Creates. Earlier this month she was presented with two awards at the Guild of Music Supervisors Sync Awards: Best Indie Label Sync Team and Sync Artist of the Year for Tanya Tagaq.
William Prince spent a long time recording his debut album. By the time ‘Earthly Days' was released in 2015, Prince had lived a lot of life and was ready for the sort of instant stardom that would throw a lot of emerging singer-songwriters for a loop. A number of extraordinary things happened followed the release of ‘Earthly Days:' the song “Breathless” was a hit on the Billboard adult contemporary music charts, Prince won the Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, and Prince toured the hell out of the record for several years, opening for artists like Neil Young. This extended tour gave him the opportunity to basically perfect his live set in a way many new artists don't get to.William has gone deeper and deeper and deeper with subsequent releases. He describes love and loss and self and community and fear and courage with universal appeal on 2020's ‘Reliever.' He reinterprets the orthodoxy and aesthetics of his Christian upbringing through an indigenous lens on ‘Gospel First Nation.' He synthesizes varied traditions and flexes impressive vocal chops almost casually.William's new record, ‘Stand In The Joy,' comes out April 14th on Six Shooter Records, and it is a catchy, ambitious testimony about the power of love and hope. Talking about the album with William gave me the chance to ask him about his evolving spirituality, the tension between tradition and trendiness in roots music, how the loves of his life change how he shows up as a performer, what it's like to work with superstar producer Dave Cobb, and what freedom looks like from a Peguis first nations perspective.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Formed in 2012 by Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay, Toronto's July Talk has spent the last ten years building up an incredible following based on an energetic live show and three stellar albums that won them the Juno award for Best Alternative Album. They have just released their fourth studio album, Remember Never Before, on Six Shooter Records. They are about to hit the road on a massive tour that begins with two shows at the legendary Massey Hall before crossing Canada and forging into the US! The two of them wax poetically about Leslie Feist's 2017 album Pleasure, an album that Leah and Peter would agree is almost perfection!

Today, we're excited to share a recent conversation that we had the pleasure of having with Nate Hilts of Canadian folk and bluegrass ensemble The Dead South, a gold-certified group that's gained a cult following over the last decade for songs like "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company,” "Banjo Odyssey," and many more. And now, featuring some of their favorite bluegrass and rock covers like “People Are Strange” by The Doors and “You Are My Sunshine,” The Dead South will release Easy Listening for Jerks, Parts I & II on March 4, 2022, via Six Shooter Records. We dig into the making of those albums, the history of the band, how some of their most popular songs originated, and a whole lot more. So stay tuned and thanks again for listening.Part of Pantheon Podcasts

Boy Golden has a purpose: enjoy each day and make good music. Founder and minister of The Church Of Better Daze, he wants to help people seeking to improve on yesterday's themes. His songs, like hymns, are hopeful, fresh and upbeat. Redefining jam band and stoner cultures by turning dead heads into lively brains, Boy Golden wants to unite us all in a hazy dream under one roof. Born Liam Duncan and raised in Brandon, Manitoba, he spent his early days touring & recording in The Middle Coast and has gone one to become an in-demand side player in Winnipeg, most notably for The Bros. Landreth. Dubbed a “Canadian Cannibas Hero” by EXCLAIM, it's clear that Boy Golden has the perfect personality to be an artist. Boy Golden's self-produced debut album, Church of Better Daze was mixed by Canadian Indie legend Joel Plaskett, and released July 16 on Six Shooter Records. I think that Edmonton-based singer/songwriter Joe Nolan is one of those true “old soul” songwriters. He's been writing songs that are deeper and wiser than his years for over a decade. He first came to my attention when Six Shooter Records put out the album Tornado in 2014 and set him off on the road to promote it. His name was unknown to me, but the label was well known, and the list of people who helped make that record was impressive. It was produced by the great Colin Linden, who was the guest on episode 3 of this show. He brought in his usual stellar backing musicians, and special guests Lindi Ortega and Tom Wilson, so the album got a quick listen. I loved it from the start. As good as that album is, Joe has demonstrated some of the most remarkable growth that I've ever seen in a young songwriter and performer. He's truly dedicated to improving and learning as much as possible and will settle for nothing but the best that he can write and put out. I think that one of the reasons that I'm also so drawn to Joe as a person is that we have similar personalities in a lot of ways. He struggles with darkness and doubt and despair but finds a lot of joy and strength in music and especially live performance. Joe is truly one of the hardest working musicians that I know. Normally, he'd have toured all over the place and done hundreds of shows over the past year, but Covid had other plans. He's made the best of his time though, and just announced a new album called Scrapper, and I really hope that you'll pre-order that and purchase some of his other albums by visiting him on Bandcamp at joenolan1.bandcamp.com You can learn more about him at joenolanmusic.com Joe had a lot more to say about the album, but I thought this episode was probably long enough already, so I've got more of my chat with Joe coming up on the May 23 edition of my other show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which you can find most places where you find this show, or at tellthebandtogohome.com
Over the course of five albums made with the backing of influential Six Shooter Records label, Amelia Curran's (www.ameliacurran.com) name became one that was known and respected across the country and beyond Canada's borders. She's won just about every music award there is in Canada, including a Juno, SOCAN award, Canadian Folk Music awards, and multiple awards on Canada's East Coast, where she makes her home. In 2014, Amelia spearheaded a project called This Video, which is a star-studded song and video that presents some startling facts about depression and suicide, but ends with hope, optimism, and a call to action. She's made other powerful documentary films since then, and you can find a few of them along with her music and much more information at ameliacurran.com This Video eventually led Amelia to form an organization called It's Mental (itsmental.ca), a grassroots community organization that focuses on the funding and sharing of knowledge on mental health realities and first aid mental health training to help safeguard our communities, families, and friends. Please check out itsmental.ca to find out more about the organization. The story of Ensign Broderick reads like a Hollywood music docu-drama. After decades of keeping his music from the world, Broderick released 5 albums last year on Six Shooter Records. His new album, Blood Myth, came out this April. Danko talked to Ensign Broderick about his story and his music. In this episode of the Red Man Laughing Podcast we sit down with the genre bending Tanya Tagaq Gillis. Unconventional in her approach to Traditional Inuit Throat Singing, Tagaq has created a name for herself as a risk taking, innovating & dynamic World talent. Her new album, Animism, is being released by Canadian label, Six Shooter Records, on Tuesday May 27th. In our conversation we talk about everything from her own Indian Residential School experience (yes, she's a survivor), her creative process & her collaborations, Carnegie Hall with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra & how her art always ties her back to the land. FROM THE LABEL - Six Shooter Records Tanya Tagaq’s music isn’t like anything you’ve heard before. Unnerving and exquisite, Tagaq’s unique vocal expression may be rooted in Inuit throat singing but her music as much to do with electronica, industrial and metal influences as it does with traditional culture. This Inuk punk is known for delivering fearsome, elemental performances that are visceral and physical, heaving and breathing and alive. Her shows draw incredulous response from worldwide audiences, and Tagaq’s tours tend to jump back and forth over the map of the world. From a Mexican EDM festival to the Canadian High Commission in London, UK, her music and performances transcend language. Tagaq makes musical friends and collaborators with an array of like-minded talents: opera singers, avant-garde violin composers, experimental DJs, all cutting edge and challenging. Tanya’s albums make for complex listening, but her string of Juno nominations attests to her ability to make difficult music speak a universal tongue. Animism, the new album, was produced by west coast shape-shifter Jesse Zubot (Dan Mangan, Fond of Tigers). The record features Michael Red (Low Indigo), a sound sampler and DJ whose wild northern field recordings often serve as Tagaq’s de facto backing band, percussionist Jean Martin and Spanish opera singer Anna Pardo Canedo. As always, thanks for listening. Make sure you subscribe to the podcast to get new episodes sent directly to your Email or iTunes.
