Learn about a new think tank that's doing some of the most important thinking on the planet. Matt Orsagh is co-founder of the Arketa Institute for Post-Growth Finance and co-author of a just-published white paper, By Disaster Or Design: How Finance Can Evolve to Avoid the Worst of the Ecological Challenges We Face and Enable the Transition to a Better Economic Model. That paper, and this episode, offer an introduction to degrowth, the rational response for a society in ecological overshoot. Degrowth is “an equitable downscaling of production and consumption that increases human well-being and enhances ecological conditions at the local and global level, in the short and long term.” We also explore how the financial industry needs to evolve as we transition to a post-growth economy. Matt is also author of the Substack column, Degrowth is the Answer. The Arketa Institute is working to “normalize the conversation around ecological economics and degrowth in the financial world.” Steve Rocco and Anastasia Linn are co-founders with Matt Orsagh. The white paper was written by the three of them, and edited by Nicholas Harland. Some upcoming events of note: April 29: Webinar to discuss the paper 'By Disaster or Design'. The episode explores the fundamental concepts of ecological economics, systems thinking, and the difference between overshoot and tipping points. The conversation begins with a reflection on the limitations of using GDP as a measure of a nation's health, as highlighted by economist Simon Kuznets, the inventor of GDP. The guests emphasize the importance of rethinking economic health and well-being, shifting from a focus on GDP growth to a more holistic approach that includes human and planetary health. The discussion then delves into the historical context of the environmental movement, referencing influential books like "The End of Nature" by Bill McKibben and "The Limits to Growth" published in 1972. The guests highlight the interconnectedness of human activities, climate change, biodiversity loss, and the urgent need to address these issues before reaching irreversible tipping points. The conversation also touches on the concept of degrowth, which proposes an equitable downscaling of production and consumption to enhance human well-being and ecological conditions. The guests emphasize the importance of transitioning from individual self-interest to collective optimization, drawing parallels with the behavior of slime molds in response to scarcity. The episode concludes with a call to action for reevaluating our current economic paradigm, shifting towards a more sustainable and equitable model that prioritizes health and well-being over GDP growth. The guests stress the urgency of addressing planetary boundaries, overshoot, and the impending tipping points that threaten the stability of our ecosystems. Overall, the episode provides a thought-provoking exploration of ecological economics, systems thinking, and the imperative need for transformative change to ensure a sustainable future for humanity and the planet. Pierre André Sénizergues grew up in the suburbs of Paris and got hooked on skateboarding at 14. He studied engineering in the early 80's and got a job as an engineer for IBM. He would skate during his lunch breaks at work and knew that he had to follow his passion. In 85 he moved to California to purse his skateboarding dream. From being one of the best skate pro's in Europe winning 12 French titles and 5 European Championships he became homeless and would do skate demos on Venice boardwalk to survive. All that changed when Steve Rocco team manager for Sims Skateboards at the time saw Pierre skate one day and asked him to join the team. Pierre became obsessed with creating a shoe for skateboarders that was durable as well as functional. He teamed up with Rautureau Apple a French fashion shoe manufacturer and starting designing skate shoes with skaters in mind. etnies was born. In 89 Pierre launched etnies in the U.S. and later gained full rights to the brand name worldwide.etnies was growing massively in the mid 90's selling millions of shoes and sponsoring the best skateboarders in the world. With specific team riders in mind he launched additional brands including éS, Emerica, apparel brand Altamont and snowboard brand ThirtyTwo. The company went under the Sole Technology Umbrella. They moved headquarters to Lake Forest, California and now Sole Tech distribute to 70+ countries and are the leading privately-held action sports footwear and apparel company in the world.Tune in to find out how Pierre went from being a pro skater to an entrepreneur, designing shoes, building an action sports community, constructing the biggest skatepark in the world at the time and loads more! The world is filled with odd events and strange people who create them. Parsing through these absurd stories to find ones that are both compelling and comical is Oki, a documentary filmmaker and interviewer who entertainingly communicates them in his series, Oki's Weird Stories. Initially, Oki engaged in a more retrospective approach to documentary-making, gathering old interviews and articles to retell the stories of people like Uwe Boll, Hiroo Onoda, Steve Rocco, and so on. As time went on, he himself began interviewing the subjects of his videos as well as performing investigative journalism. In this lengthy interview, Oki and I talk about the stories he has covered and the process of documenting them. We also converse about cults, the state of the modern news media landscape, mythomania, the reputation of YouTube in Hollywood, censorship on social media, in addition to many other subjects. In talking with Oki, one thing became most apparent: perception is everything. Recorded March 13, 2022 @ Industry Plant®

Let's take a closer look at Girl: a staple favourite for many, with a cult-like following unlike almost any other skateboard brand! Girl was built around the idea of skateboarding for fun, and not taking life too seriously. Rick Howard and Mike Carroll had grown tired of the seriousness, and seriously short shelf life, of pro skateboarders, and wanted to imagine something new; this was at the time of Plan B's Virtual Reality film, when Carroll was just 17. So, Rick and Mike, alongside Spike Jonze and Megan Baltimore, split off to create Girl. This infuriated Steve Rocco of World Industries, who in retaliation, created a brand called Bitch skateboards to mock them out. With a stacked original team of Jeron Wilson, Sean Sheffey, Mike Carroll, Eric Koston, Rick Howard, Rick Mccrank, Brandon Biebel, Jeremy Rogers, Girl quickly became an iconic brand and team. Together, under Girl Films International, they filmed classics like Goldfish, Mouse, Yeah Right, Yes We Canada, Hard Euro Barge, Doll and many, many more; today, they post segments at Girl Headquarters, such as Crail Couch, where they catch up with pros through short interviews. Some members, such as Eric Koston, and Guy Mariano, have since left the time to start new brands, like Numbers. Nowadays, they've since added to the team, with firepower like Sean Malto, Andrew Brophy, and Mike Mo Capaldi; and even more recently adding Sean Bannerot, Niels Bennett, Griffin Gass, Manchild, and ironically, their actual first girl team rider, Breana Geering. Spike Jonze has been a significant part of what has made Girl special, with his background in Hollywood. This has led to appearances of celebrities such as Owen Wilson, Will Arnett, and Jack Black making appearances. http://shop.shredzshop.com for more info.
Welcome to the 14 Things You Didn't Know Skateboarding podcast, where in this episode, we dive into 14 Things You Didn't Know About Powell Peralta skateboards. It all begin with George Powell in his garage, making homemade skateboards for his son in the 70's. George, an aeronautics engineer, had a knack for innovation, and loved tinkering with new ideas for making everyday things better. It wasn't long before he connected with Stacy Peralta, a pro skateboarder who had a special talent for marketing. The match was made in heaven, and the brand began growing in popularity, recruiting a team of underdogs and misfits, who would become the infamous bones brigade; Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike Mcgill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, and Tommy Guerrero. The team topped the competition podiums for years, and released a number of industry-leading skateboard films which have now become timeless icons of skateboarding culture. However, great success can have a dark side, as Stacy and George began to argue about the future of the company; Stacy wanted to see the team disperse to start new small companies, whereas George saw this as foolish. Eventually parting ways and bringing the company temporarily to a close, Bones Brigade members parted ways to make many of the iconic brands of today: Lance started the firm, Tony started Birdhouse, Tommy started Real, and Rodney started world industries with Mike Vallely and Steve Rocco. Today, Powell Peralta continues to be an industry leader, pioneering new technologies within skateboarding; particularly with the creation of the flight deck, and Bones Swiss Bearings. Namn som nämndes: Lech Walesa, Becket Colon, Hank, Tomas och Per Holknekt, Jobby Kamlid, Rodrigo Valdebenito, Pontus Karlsson, Neal Hendrix, Hazze Lindgren, Steve Rocco, Daniel Franck, Ingemar Backman, Perre Viking, Tony Alva, Jason Timbuktu Diakite, Justin Timberlake, Antonia Ax:son Johnson, Gry Forssell, Peter Siepen, Mikael Persbrandt, Jason Lee, Papa Dee, Pascal Strüwer m.fl. Freestyle-avsnittet! Trevlig lyssning!Denis och Mathias.
