This episode is recorded live at Glowforge, makers of a 2D laser cutter—but it's not a sponsored episode and we don't talk about the hardware much at all. Instead, it's conversation about what people are trying to make and how to get started as a creator. I talk with Glowforge founder (and my friend) Dan Shapiro, and the company's two content designers, Shell Meggersee and Nick Taylor, who spend a lot of their time talking to new and experienced makers as they work with their laser equipment. They offer some great insight and a lot of encouragement. A few lovely quotes that struck me on listening to the recording afterwards: Nick: “I wonder if we're teaching them how to fail gracefully, rather than how to be successful?” Shell: “There's some subtle psychology in the fact that, ‘Oh, the machine messed up! Oops! It wasn't me!'” Dan: “Tools that help you become an amateur are so wonderful…it gets you to that point where you have some small degree of self-sufficiency and creativity.” (Glowforge did sponsor an episode earlier in the current season; this episode was entirely my idea and no money changed hands. However, if you're thinking about buying a Glowforge, you can use this referral link and get $100 to $500 off purchase price depending on the model. I receive the same amount as a referral fee, which helps support the podcast.) Patrons This episode is also brought to you in part by Disruptor-level patrons Bob Owen, Garrett Allen, Michael Warner, Nick Hurley, and Nicholas Santos. You can become a patron of the show on a one-time or recurring basis, and get rewards like an exclusive enamel pin and being thanked in this fashion! Guest biographies Dan Shapiro sold his last company to Google. His last side project was Robot Turtles, the best-selling board game in Kickstarter history. He builds drones, authored Hot Seat: The Startup CEO Guidebook, and his seven-year-old twins regularly beat him at the game Werewolf. You can listen to the New Disruptors episode on Robot Turtles (episode 59, January 2014). Shell Meggersee has worked in film, TV and video games, bringing everything from giant 3D monsters to well-known cartoon characters to life. At night, you might find her designing anything from vinyl toys to couture bedding fabric to intricate wedding invitations. Nick Taylor has spent the last 12 years completing hundreds of projects including custom headphones, bespoke bicycles, desktop furniture, and lighting. Before joining Glowforge, Nick spent 5 years at Apple and ran his own company making artisanal leather goods. Show notes Service bureaus for 2D cutting and 3D printing abound. Ponoko is a well-known one for cutting and engraving, and Shapeways for 3D printing. Nick Benson, part of a great family of artists and a descendent of stone carvers, has an amazing Instagram account The ansible, a sci-fi solution for instantaneous communication Graw! #344: Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost—the brains behind Studio Neat—break down strategies and tactics for a successful Kickstarter campaign. They would know; they've crushed it with over nine campaigns! Podcast show notes available here: https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/session344
Myke and the Studio Neat lads discuss the latest updates to Mark One production, and then buckle in for another installment of Dan’s Tech Corner.
In this episode we’ll hear from Dan Provost, 50% of the Studio Neat team. They started in 2010 with a piece of hardware, called a Glif, that mounted a smartphone onto a standard camera tripod. They were aiming for $10k for the campaign and ended up reaching almost $140k. They rebooted the Glif in 2016 and raised $208k, passing their $50k goal in less than a day. Their ridiculous success on Kickstarter isn’t the story here though. What’s interesting about Studio Neat is that the company is just two people: Dan and his business partner Tom. That’s it. Their office is a garage behind Tom’s backyard in Austin, Texas. They’ve been able to build a company of one, with two people, shipping thousands of orders at a time after successful crowdfunding campaigns, and make the whole thing work without sacrificing having a good life. They embody the ideas and mindset of thriving as a company of one.e without scaling his company. Learn more at https://ofone.co
Welcome to a mini episode of The New Disruptors, “What's Your Latest,” in which I ask creators just about the most recent thing they made. Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt are Studio Neat, independent industrial designers and app developers for nearly a decade, and an early Kickstarter success. Their latest product is the Mark One, an all-metal retractable pen with a simple exterior that masks the complexity of how pens click. They went to Kickstarter as they almost always do to launch the product, and raised over $230,000 towards a $30,000 goal. We talk about the challenges of design and manufacture, and how this pen was designed and how it's being made even as we spoke. Listen to more of Dan and Tom's conversations about independent product development on Thoroughly Considered, a podcast on the Relay network, in which they talk at intervals with host and Relay co-founder Myke Hurley. A crowdfunding campaign brought back The New Disruptors, but I could produce more episodes and keep the show running after July 2019 with your help! You can contribute monthly via Patreon or become a yearly subscriber directly on this site—and get nifty bonuses and rewards. Read more about supporting the podcast.
Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost are the founders of Studio Neat, a design company making gadgets and tools through Kickstarter. Their first campaign, the Glif tripod mount, helped launch other Kickstarter hardware back in 2010. Since then, they’ve crowdfunded seven more projects, everything from the Cosmonaut to the Neat Ice Kit. Their products are simply designed and delightful to use. On this episode, Tom and Dan share how a diverse product offering and slow-but-steadfast audience growth are tenets of running their business (7:00). Stephan, Tom, and Dan ponder being generalists versus specialists (12:17). Tom likens Studio Neat to a band (16:04). They talk about growing their email list through Kickstarter (21:18) and the long tail benefits of selling through Amazon (22:40). They talk about the creative process of making practical products (25:10) and how a product story is important (28:05). They explain why outsourcing works for their small operation (40:44), and finally, they talk about jealousy as a source of inspiration and motivation (48:25). Link and images from this post are on the Lumi blog.
Studio Neat are back on Kickstarter, and this time it's a pen.
It’s that time of year! Studio Neat and Relay FM both had a great 2017, so what changes and tweaks will the guys make to ensure maintained success?

No matter what kind of business you're thinking of starting, you have got to solve a REAL problem with a REAL solution. We tear apart this idea in depth with Dan and Tom from [Studio Neat], makers of fine, modern physical products. They've just launched a brand new (and very unique) [notebook on Kickstarter], and it hit it's goal in just a few hours. So, naturally, we wanted to ask them about what they've learned about business in their several years creating successful products from scratch. Here's three pieces of advice from them good for *all* of us, no matter the kind of business we're running: More at http://fizzleshow.co/223

Tom and Dan had one of the most successful Kickstarters of 2010 when they released the Glif. But was that enough to launch full-time careers as product makers?
The Get Paid Podcast: The Stark Reality of Entrepreneurship and Being Your Own Boss
This online business world is full of coaches and consultants whose expenses are limited to team members, software and maybe some extra coaching. But what do you do if the thing you want to sell requires a mold that costs $10,000 just to get started? Lots of industrial designers will turn to Kickstarter when they want to validate a product idea before investing tons of money in making it. The Glif, created by Tom and Dan from Studio Neat, was among the earliest campaigns to really blow up in the physical product space, and since then they've continued to use the crowd-funding platform to launch new products.

Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt are Studio Neat, a small design and software group that produces nifty products. They began with the Glif, and when I talked to them last over a year ago, they had launched their second software product and were deep in planning on a new, more complicated item: the Neat Ice Kit. They funded the kit on Kickstarter in September 2013, raising $156,000 against a $50,000 goal. We talk through the challenges of fulfilling that campaign, more lessons learned, and their recently launched follow-up, the Simple Syrup Kit. Studio Neat, one of my favorite companies, was back at the expo this year showing off their newly revamped iPhone tripod mount, the GLIF ($30). Unlike previous versions that were designed to hold a specific iPhone model, the updated GLIF is adjustable, meaning it can hold just about any smartphone, with or without a cover. Most universal tripod mounts feature a spring-loaded clamp to hold your device in place. This means you can instantly swap out one smartphone for another -- a nice benefit most mobile filmmakers will never need. The downside of this approach is that the clamp may not hold your device as snugly as you'd like. The GLIF takes a very different approach. Using the included hex key (allan wrench), you can tighten the GLIF around an existing iDevice. This results in a mount that fits your gizmo like a glove. Then, when you get a new iPhone (or Android), you can pull out the hex key and adjust your GLIF to fit. In other words, the GLIF doesn't allow for quick swaps, but it will remain useful even as you upgrade to new devices with different form factors. Sweeeeet! The GLIF is small enough to slip in your pocket, and just like the previous incarnation, this new model doubles as a table-top stand. It looks like it could open a beer, but I have yet to be successful with that. I'll keep you posted. In case you were wondering, this bad boy started its life in 2010 with a Kickstarter campaign. Studio Neat was hoping to raise $10,000 to get the GLIF off the ground. Instead, they raised... wait for it... $137,417! That's a lot of GLIFs! At least 50, right? I failed math.
We recorded a special live episode of The New Disruptors in Brooklyn's fantastic DUMBO district in the Galapagos Art Space as part of the Nearly Impossible conference in which we talked about the joys, challenges, and surprises in prototyping, funding, producing, and distributing products. On stage, we had Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy of CW&T, Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost of Studio Neat, and Jessica Heltzel of Kern and Burn. Sponsored by Shopify..
Our guests today are the two co-founders of Studio Neat, Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt. Their design for an iPhone camera mount, called Glif, was the very first product design project to launch on Kickstarter way back in 2010. Since then they have launched two other projects, Cosmonaut, a wide grip iPad stylus, and Simple Bracket, an easy to use iPhone app for filling out March Madness tournament brackets. Now they're back with a new project called the Neat Ice Kit (video below), which is designed to help you easily make clear ice for cocktails at home. If there is a theme to their work it's this: smart, simple, and successful. We talk about their approach to running a Kickstarter campaign, how they pick projects to work on, our favorite cocktails, the new iPhone 5C, and vintage software.
Tom and Dan of Studio Neat join Stephan Ango to discuss lessons learned after multiple Kickstarter campaigns, keeping your business simple, going to retail and fulfilling products with Shipwire.
