Daniel Shapiro, former U.S. ambassador to Israel and a key architect of the cease-fire-for-hostages deal underway between Israel and Hamas, said on the Haaretz Podcast that the "ultimate condition" of any post-war settlement for Gaza must be the removal of Hamas from power. Shapiro, speaking to host Allison Kaplan Sommer on the week Israel received the bodies of the murdered Bibas family, said the "terrible and heartbreaking" event revived memories of the days following October 7, when "there were many, many people in the U.S. administration who, in addition to doing the focused, hard work of trying to figure out what the right policies were and prepare for the military and the diplomatic decisions, also had to stop in the middle of the day sometimes and just weep a bit because the brutality was so profound." Discussing President Donald Trump's plan to empty the Gaza Strip of its Palestinian residents, Shapiro advised those welcoming the plan not to get their hopes up. "I can understand the appeal of it to some Israelis who might say, 'well, yeah, it might make our problem of 2 million Palestinians disappear and make the United States own this problem so we don't have to worry about it,' he said, "but that doesn't make it any more serious. It's not going to happen." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everyone can agree—cannabis operates in a legal gray area. For starters, anyone in the industry is technically breaking federal law, as cannabis remains federally illegal. But for an in-house attorney at an MSO, the job isn't just about navigating federal risk. It's about understanding where gray meets red, balancing state-by-state regulations, and ensuring compliance across an industry with ever-changing rules—especially for a publicly traded company. This week, we sit down with Dan Shapiro, EVP of Ascend Wellness, to break down:Understanding the legal gray areas in cannabisShifting regulations, the Farm Bill, and Schedule 3Balancing legal risk and business strategy in a fragmented industryAbout Ascend WellnessAWH is a vertically integrated multistate cannabis operator with licenses and assets in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. What happens when leaders are too afraid to take bold, polarizing actions? In this episode, Lindsay Pedersen interviews Dan Shapiro, CEO and author of Hot Seat, about the complexities of leadership, decision-making, and strategy in today's business landscape. Dan delves into how leaders can balance decisiveness with inclusivity, why polarizing strategies often lead to better results, and how to empower teams without losing accountability. Drawing on both his business experience and personal life, Dan shares key insights into leadership that parallel the challenges of parenting, highlighting the importance of values-driven inspiration and fast, effective decision-making. The Tension Between Risk and Safety: Many leaders opt for the safer, middle-ground approach, but polarizing strategies can often deliver stronger results. Strategic Decision-Making: Pre-making decisions aligned with long-term goals ensures consistency, but leaders must build team buy-in to avoid resentment or disengagement. Empowering Teams with Clear Strategies: Clear strategies empower teams, but poor communication or lack of alignment can leave them feeling disempowered. Making Good Decisions Fast: Leaders must use strategic frameworks to make quick, informed decisions without getting mired in small details. Accountability and Risk: Balancing team freedom with accountability helps ensure full commitment to risky initiatives and avoid half-hearted efforts. Develop Clear Decision-Making Frameworks: Create strategic principles in advance to streamline decisions and stay focused on long-term goals. Empower Without Relinquishing Accountability: Encourage teams to take risks but ensure they are fully committed to the success of their initiatives. Balance Short and Long-Term Decisions: Prioritize immediate decisions versus those needing strategic thought and allocate time accordingly. Align Teams with Company Strategy: Foster alignment by clearly communicating the strategy and securing buy-in from all team members to avoid internal conflict. From politics to every day life, humans have a tendency to form social groups that are defined in part by how they differ from other groups. Neuroendocrinologist Robert Sapolsky, author Dan Shapiro, and others explore the ways that tribalism functions in society, and discuss how—as social creatures—humans have evolved for bias. But bias is not inherently bad. The key to seeing things differently, according to Beau Lotto, is to "embody the fact" that everything is grounded in assumptions, to identify those assumptions, and then to question them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: 0:00 Intro 0:30 Robert Sapolsky on the hardwiring of social creatures and the “runaway trolley problem. 4:53 Alexander Todorov on typicality and how we perceive faces. 6:46 Dan Shapiro on when tribe loyalty supersedes logic. 8:00 Amy Chua on the importance of grouping our identities. 8:47 Dividing into groups is inevitable, says Sapolsky, but how we divide is fluid. 10:44 Beau Lotto and Todorov discuss how our brains evolved for assumptions and the psychological functions of first impressions. Our brain evolved to take what is meaningless to make it meaningful. Everything you do right now is grounded in your assumptions. Not sometimes, but all the time. We are kind of hardwired to figure out the intentions of other people. We turn the world into us's and thems. And we don't like the thems very much and are often really awful to them. That's the challenge of our tribalistic world that we're in right now. ROBERT SAPOLSKY: When you look at some of the most appalling realms of our behavior, much of it has to do with the fact that social organisms are really, really hardwired to make a basic dichotomy about the social world, which is those organisms who count as us's and those who count as thems. And this is virtually universal among humans. And this is virtually universal among all sorts of social primates that have aspects of social structures built around separate social groupings, us's and thems. We turn the world into us's and thems and we don't like the thems very much and are often really awful to them. And the us's, we exaggerate how wonderful and how generous and how affiliative and how just like siblings they are to us. We divide the world into us and them. And one of the greatest ways of seeing just biologically how real this fault line is is there's this hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is officially the coolest, grooviest hormone on Earth because what everybody knows is it enhances mother infant bonding, and it enhances pair bonding in couples. I met Dan Shapiro years ago when I went out to fly kites with Elan Lee. What a delightful guy! Dan is an inspiring entrepreneur with boundless energy, always upbeat. He's had, I think, four companies that succeeded, maybe three that were venture backed. Dan did something super cool. He got excited about making a board game that would teach kids how to program called Robot Turtles. He made that game using Kickstarter or something, and in the process really figured out how to succeed at crowdfunding. I think at the time it was one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns ever for game. But then he took that knowledge and he used it when he started Glowforge. Glowforge is a desktop laser cutter. This is a tool you can use to cut materials. You draw something on your computer, click print and it'll literally use a laser to go cut or engrave materials. You've seen this kind of thing. Things engraved in wood that are done this way now, and lots of parts can be made this way for all kinds of projects. Dan wanted to democratize that. I don't know if my laser cutter was the first one he ever saw, but one way or another, he ended up with one in his garage and they were like these kind of crummy, chinese laser cutters with print drivers from hell that are used to operate them, and they're sort of dicey, but it's still inspiring because what you can do with them. Dan had one in his garage to make Robot Turtles. So the next company he wanted to make, Glowforge, was to try and take that amazing tool and bring it to everyone. And this was very analogous to what Makerbot had done with 3D printers, which I got to help with a little bit. In those days, Dan asked me what I thought about it and I got to help him, be a little advisor for Glowforge. They made this thing a very big success, in part by crowdfunding the first version and this was really hard to do. They made the first prototype. Made a very inspiring video about it. They did a crowdfunding campaign and got world record pre-orders for this thing and that's how they funded starting the company and it's hard to do that. Hard to keep everybody happy. All these things, especially hardware projects always take longer than you hope or estimate. I think they probably lost some of their backers along the way for those reasons. But they did ship, which was not true of a lot of other crowdfunding campaigns. I'm a Kickstarter junkie, so I back all kinds of stuff and a good fraction of it never shows up and a good fraction of it shows up and by the time it does, I can't remember what it was in the first place. I've been wanting to share this conversation with Dan with you guys for a long time. He's a great entrepreneur. I have a hard time getting him to say anything mean about anybody or anything, he's so positive. You'll learn about not only Glowforge and what they've done, but also, a little bit about how to think about these technologies and bringing them into the world. Enjoy! The podcast also discusses the transition in leadership at Flow, with Daniel Scrivner taking over as CEO after a period of downsizing. The challenges of overhauling the app and maintaining momentum with a reduced team are explored, culminating in the release of Flow X, a major update aimed at streamlining team collaboration. Ultimately, we'll conclude with an update on Flow's status, noting Daniel Scrivner's departure from the company in 2022 and the lack of information about its current leadership. The podcast reflects on Flow's journey as a potential "cigar butt" for Tiny Capital, where minimal investments are made in the asset until its eventual decline. Despite the uncertainties surrounding Flow's future, the episode provides insights into the trials and tribulations of building and sustaining a bootstrapped startup in a competitive market.
