Whoever first thought to take the sounds of gospel and add a beat underneath (I'm just gonna go ahead and credit the iconic Frankie Knuckles) must have been one of the greatest pioneers of house music of all time. Frankie once said that clubs are “like church... by the time the preacher gets going, the whole room becomes one.” House lovers often refer to the dance floor as church. And some of the most joyous moments I've experienced at a club have been courtesy of gospel house. I vividly remember going to Twilo and Body & Soul in the late-'90s and hearing tracks for the first time from Sounds of Blackness, Jasper Street Co., Su Su Bobien, Vernessa Mitchell, Barbara Tucker, and Kim English that completely changed my outlook towards music. I've been meaning to put together a gospel house mix for quite some time now (ever since playing a full gospel house set at the Church of Now at Burning Man in 2019), and a recent trip this holiday season to Portland to hear the Northwest Community Gospel Chorus gave me the inspiration that I finally needed. So, rather than your typical house, tech house, or disco set, here's 90 minutes (I could have easily made this 5 hours!) of pure praise for the lord - a dance floor journey of uplifting and soulful calls for love and redemption. There are classics here interspersed with brand-new tracks from this year, with reinterpretations sprinkled throughout. Hey Everybody, So I watch a lot of dj videos on youtube. Not the “plonk a controller somewhere pretty with no source of electricity & chick in a bikini miming to a prerecord”. No, Im talking working djs, booked by a venue or promoter  to entertain a crowd. What strikes me most about these is that almost no one is dancing. Sure some will sway or bounce from their knees, but no one appears to be letting it all go to their favourite jam. It seems that everyone just stands there watching (& of course filming) & depending on the genre, will jump a bit when the drop lands, but then go back to watching until the next one. Djing has become a visual medium & clubbing has become a spectator activity. There is some circular irony in a dj playing a soundtrack to the action of watching them do so. It used to be that you went to a club to dance & most of the time didn't even know where the dj was located. It didn't matter. Their job was to make you dance, not look good in a video. A good dj would keep you dancing, but in addition to taking you stratospheric with awesome bangers, they also pulled back on the throttle & varied the rhythms so you could catch your breath or change your footwork to ease off the lactic acid build-up & give your legs a rest. This mix then is an homage to club dancing, not knowing where the dj is but trusting they will make your night. I figured I'd get a jump on things and drop an unexpected surprise for you folks next week in its stead. Party Favorz decided to bring the party indoors and is releasing the annual Holiday Edition a week early! The Holiday Edition 2018 is chock-full of the biggest Circuit Tribal House music blowing up at the moment. In 2008, after having successfully created multiple feature sets for friends that included Everything But The Girl, Madonna, Kristine W, Christina Aguilera, and even Sara McLachlan, I began to realize folks were really digging them and then came up with the idea for the Diva Series.  I was steeped in house music at the time doing my 90's re-education and quickly became enamored with Barbara Tucker.  If there is a queen of pop and a queen of disco then Ms. Tucker who holds the most #1 house hits is definitively considered the queen of house music. Whether she's singing originals or paying homage to Aretha or Whitney, she does it with ease and a heaping serving of soul.  I decided it was time and go back put together a proper tribute for Ms. Tucker that reflects all of her then and more recent hits and even played Barbie and provided her with a proper dress that better suites her skin color.  That red was not working for me but the chartreuse, which better matched her skin color looks fabulous!
