Brain Hurt Scale = 2/10 - Did you know, one of the biggest growth channels tech companies invest in is community? The same goes for companies outside of SaaS as well. Companies like Sephora and Nike have massive communities of customers that act as the glue for their entire promotional model. But how do you create them? What are the do's and don'ts we need to be aware of and what tools should we use? Luckily Paz Pisarski has created countless communities for some of the biggest companies in the world before evolving her model to teach this method to other community managers and interested entrepreneurs. During a panel discussion at SXSW Sydney in 2024 Paz Pisarski came into our orbit and we just had to have a chat afterwards, So if you want a crash-course in community building this will get you at least 90% of the way there. You could leverage the network effects and synergy that comes from building a high-value community. Or Continue to be a one-trick pony, cross your fingers and publish that next piece of content which everyone says is "going to go viral". ___________________ Paz Pisarski's LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/paz-pisarski/ Community Collective https://thecommunitycollective.co/

“As people we are all capable of so much more than we imagine ourselves to be” - Katherine Bennell-PeggIn this episode you meet Australia's first ever astronaut. Katherine Bennell-Pegg grew up looking at the stars in her suburban Sydney backyard, and by early high school when asked by a teacher to write down three professions she'd like to pursue as an adult she wrote just one. Unlike those of us who still don't know what we want to be, she set her sights on the stars and achieved what few dare to dream. Listen in to hear what it takes to become a qualified astronaut, why being able to understand Привет, как дела? is important, how space food is better than you'd expect, why all astronauts are medical test subjects, and how big aspirations are so important for young kids. On the menu are Fantales, chip butties, and marshmallows. It's a sweet and super-inspiring episode. Katherine's social cause is diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) because “unless we have diverse thought and creativity we can't solve the problems of tomorrow”.Katherine serves forth duckweed, from the Plants4Space team to our next guest Heston Russell. A BigLaw firm recently ran an experiment at the South by Southwest Sydney event, in which it tested whether artificial intelligence was capable of besting a senior associate in a mock trial. The end result offers pertinent lessons – not just for lawyers' use of emerging tech but also for advocates and clients alike. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Lander & Rogers senior associate and innovation manager Jeanette Merjane and digital economy lawyer Kenneth Leung about their respective work at the BigLaw firm and interest in artificial intelligence (AI), the impetus behind testing AI's capacity to win a court case, how they undertook the experiment at SXSW Sydney, and the questions the firm hoped to answer in doing so. Merjane and Leung also delve into what happened in the mock trial, how well the AI platform performed, what Merjane's experience was like going up against an AI platform, whether AI is likely to improve its advocacy, the insights gained from running the mock trial, whether the nature of advocacy is changing, whether clients will want to use AI to get the answers they are seeking, and what the experiment teaches us about the importance of human advocacy. To call Parish Malfitano's sophomore feature, Salt Along the Tongue, a straight up horror film feels like a disservice to the experience of watching this magnificent melodrama-adjacent film. Yes, there are most certainly horrific elements - blood features heavily throughout the film, upsetting tales about the symbiotic relationship between wasps and figs are told, bodies float in the air in unsettling ways, boils and scars emerge in haunting ways on the legs of characters, and of course, the thematic backbone of Italian witches that feature within the film - but Salt Along the Tongue instead feels more like a familial, motherly drama in the vein of Pedro Almodovar's work.Yet, even calling Salt Along the Tongue an homage to Alomdovar feels like it's doing a disservice to Parish's work here. This is, much like his first film, a distinct work syphoned from the mind of Parish Malfitano, and in the realm of Australian cinema, that is a blessing.Salt Along the Tongue follows Laneikka Denne's Mattia, a teen girl who struggles to find her place in the world being bullied at school and simply unable to be herself. It's a reality that's thrown into further turmoil when her mother unexpectedly dies, with Mattia having to move to live with her aunt, Carol (Dina Panozzo), who also happens to be her mothers identical twin. Yet, Carol is distinctly different than Matthia's mother, with her aunt having an exuberant personality that, when married with her complicated relationship with alcohol and the cooking show she records with her coven of friends, causes Matthia's life to shift in ways she doesn't know how to fully navigate. This is just the surface of what Parish is working with in Salt Along the Tongue, a film that features an almost completely women led cast, and acts as an ode to mothers and the hardships that men have put upon them in the world. Shot with a stunning colour palette that plays out at times like an aurora gracing through the sky, and at others like a freshly slaughtered chicken, blood dripping everywhere, Salt Along the Tongue is a film full of supreme confidence, driven by a vision to explore Parish's Italian heritage in an Australian setting. The co-lead of the film, Laneikka Denne, wisely said on Letterboxd that this does not feel like it was made in Australia in all the right ways, and they are completely right. There's a brilliance at work here that feels diametrically opposed to the projects that funding bodies in Australia are supporting. Parish is not working alone in this capacity, with filmmakers like Alice Maio Mackay and Alina Lodkina each exploring personal narratives within Australian cinema, and in doing so, these filmmakers are shifting what Australian cinema is.That notion of Australian cinema, as always, is embedded in my conversations with filmmakers, and the following discussion with Parish, recorded ahead of the films launch at SXSW Sydney on 18 & 19 October, explores his relationship with Australian cinema, his drive to tell stories that he wants to see on screen, and his journey through the creative process of making Salt Along the Tongue. While this conversation goes for fifty minutes, I feel like we barely scratched the surface of what's at play within this vividly realised and sensorially invigorating film. So, with that said, if you're in Sydney, head along and see the film on 18 or 19 October. It looks like the 18th is sold out, so jump on board for the 19th if you can. Make sure to seek out Parish's previous film, Bloodshot Heart, which is available on demand. These agents handle complex tasks independently, but questions remain on how they'll be monetized. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff criticized Microsoft's approach, advocating for more integrated AI solutions. Survey: 55% of Users Turning Away from Traditional Search Engines A survey by Barry Schwartz shows that 55% of respondents are using traditional search engines like Google less, favoring generative AI tools like ChatGPT. This contrasts with another survey by The Information, which reported a higher figure of 77%. The discrepancy might be due to differences in audience demographics, with Schwartz's poll leaning more toward SEO and search marketing professionals. AI vs. Lawyer: Live Mock Trial to Test AI's Capabilities in Court At the SXSW Sydney event in October 2024, a live mock trial will test whether AI can successfully represent a litigant in court. Using NexLaw's AI tool, one defendant will be supported by AI, while the other will have a human lawyer. The trial will explore whether AI can assist people who lack legal representation. The outcome, voted on by the audience, will offer insights into AI's potential in courtroom settings. Food Bloggers Concerned Over AI-Generated Recipes AI's integration into recipe development, including Apple's latest "Apple Intelligence," has stirred concerns among food bloggers. While AI can conveniently generate meal plans, critics argue that it lacks the human nuance, sensory experience, and cultural connection vital to cooking. Sarah and Kaitlin Leung, creators of The Woks of Life, emphasize that AI can't replicate the deep research and testing involved in crafting recipes. Conversely, Andrew Olson, developer of the AI-powered DishGen, believes AI offers new creativity in cooking without replacing human insight. Are Résumés Becoming Obsolete in the Age of AI? As AI increasingly powers applicant tracking systems and platforms like LinkedIn grow, some job seekers question if résumés are still necessary. Career expert Eli Amdur argues that despite tech advancements, résumés remain critical communication tools, presenting what role a candidate can play in an employer's future. While technology aids in initial screening, decision-makers still prioritize thoughtfully crafted résumés when evaluating candidates for roles.

Our guest today is the incredibly talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Kinsley. With roots in classical music, Sarah's journey into contemporary music led her to start writing and composing her own songs. She's now set to release her highly anticipated debut album, Escaper, this Friday. This indie pop record showcases Sarah's growth as an artist, with grand arrangements and beautiful instrumentation, featuring the production work of John Congleton. In today's episode, we chat with Sarah about stepping out of her home studio to collaborate with Congleton, how she knew the songs on Escaper would form her debut album, and delve into one of my favourite tracks, "My Name is Dancing." We also reminisce about our time together at SXSW Sydney last year and discuss her experience touring with Mitski.Sarah Kinsley: Instagram / SpotifyPurchase Escaper here.Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “Giving can be a small amount and it still makes a difference.”__________If you've been listening to me for a while, you may recall that I attending the inaugural SXSW Sydney event in 2023 and amoung some of the most incredible talks and panels I attended, I came across today's guest. Theresa Winters organised the panel and session with the topic being microgrants. Alternative forms of fund raising have always intrigued me and I've been involved in micro-financing and giving circles previously so I was eager to learn more. Theresa is an international-award-winning community builder. Her full-time role is as the Alumni Programs Coordinator at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia's #1 young university), where she creates global connections between alumni, organisations, and students. She was the winner of the international Community Manager Award from the Global Workspace Association. She is the co-founder and editor of The Plus Ones, a media company that focuses on telling people about the best events and experiences across Melbourne and Sydney. If that wasn't already enough, Theresa is also the Dean of the Sydney chapter of The Awesome Foundation, and recently served as a Board member of the Surry Hills Business Partnership. She also acts as the Sydney lead for the Fomo Killer Society - a private group of the best founders, operators, and community builders throughout Australasia. Theresa's favourite activities include running a book club (focused on prize-winning and acclaimed literature); teaching workshops about Historical Linguistics at Laneway Learning; and planning elaborate theme parties for her friends! It takes a special kind of human to do the work Theresa does, so please enjoy meeting this wonderful woman. For more information about Theresa, check out these places;-Instagram: @desdrata and @awesomefoundsydLinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/theresawinters/Website: https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/sydneyHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

The Pals x Oliver Cronin Episode 268 Following the release of “Hello Goodbye” earlier this year, a sold out debut headline tour, and being nominated for Best New Artist at the 2024 Shure Rolling Stone Awards, Australian dark-pop artist Oliver Cronin keeps the momentum going with the anthemic new single “Burning House” via Warner Records / Warner Music Australia. Taken from his to-be-announced debut album, “Burning House” hears the Sydney based artist stepping into a pulsating synth soundscape that is reminiscent of artists like Justin Bieber. Layering the upbeat production with confident and romantic lyricism, Oliver Cronin sings about even if everything goes wrong that you'll be fine as long as you're with the person you care most about. "My producer Skimmy played me the beat for it the first day I got to LA, and I immediately knew I wanted to use it for the album. We got distracted making the rest of the album but every time we got in the car I'd get him to play that beat for me again. We got to the last couple days of the trip and we decided to give it a go, at that point in time I didn't have enough love songs on the record so we went into it with that in mind. The fun thing about the process of this song is there was absolutely no pressure because we had basically already written the whole album, so we could just fuck around and have fun and see what we came up with. I wrote it with Mason Dane, Dan Elkayan and Matt Hall and the song is about sticking by a loved one, your partner, your best friend, your ride or die really, through thick or thin. We knew it was something special as soon as we made it.” Says Oliver Cronin on the song. 2023 was a year full of highs for Oliver Cronin which saw multiple viral successes with his TikTok remixes and livestreams that have seen him amass over 670K followers on the app. Interpretations of songs like “Paint The Town Red” by Doja Cat, “Escapism” by RAYE, and “3:15 (Breathe)” by Russ have introduced him to a whole new audience, while his livestreams have seen him creating new music and candidly showing viewers his creative process. He shared a couple of singles including the hypnotic “Speed Bump,” the tropical-pop collaboration “I Need You” with Lil Xxel, and the summer anthem “1,2,3” with Topic which highlighted a well-crafted sound and an excitement to experiment. He also dropped the three-track EP after midnight (demos),which was a collection of unfinished demos he's written on live streams and ones fans were requesting. He featured on Connor Price's viral track “RUBY,” and Canadian rising star Lum's “Temptation.” On the touring front in 2023, Oliver Cronin joined Nessa Barrett on her sold-out Australian and New Zealand tour in December which saw him performing in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Auckland. He also performed at the inaugural SXSW Sydney. 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for Oliver Cronin following the release of “Hello Goodbye” and “Burning House”, his debut sold headline tour, and he's currently overseas on a whirlwind promo trip in UK, Germany, America and Asia. Brain Hurt Scale = 3/10. A live recording of that time I was invited by James Pember to speak at the inaugural SXSW Sydney 2023. Note: this is a repost with permission of an episode of the Own The Moment podcast by Komo Technologies. James interviews me on-stage in front of 70+people and I try to answer a series of questions completely impromptu. James is a product leader and host of a podcast run by martech firm Komo Technologies. They have a podcast called 'Own The Moment'. It's common knowledge that train travel beats air travel in the sustainability stakes, but in recent months I've put this to the test a bit more than usual, in a country where it can be hard to do: my homeland, Australia. It all began when Dr Susanne Etti, the Global Environmental Impact Manager for Intrepid Travel, challenged me to fly the shorter route to Melbourne and then take the train with her from Melbourne to Sydney, on our way to speak at SXSW Sydney. The Melbourne to Sydney route is one of the busiest domestic air routes in the world, and seeing how the train alternative worked was such a good idea! Susanne and I recorded our thoughts along the way, so you'll hear those in this episode, along with our answers to a bunch of questions asked by listeners about our experience. Once you start looking, there are other times you might take the train instead of alternatives like flying or driving. Justin Watson, another SXSW panelist, took the train from Canberra to Sydney instead of driving or flying, and I chat with him about this experience too. Finally, I added another train ride just in time to make this episode - travelling on the Australind train from Perth to Bunbury on my way to run workshops in south-west Western Australia. Another fantastic experience, and I tell you all about it in this episode. Human beings have an innate need to belong to a group or tribe. Large parts of our brain are dedicated to engaging and interacting with others. Belonging triggers the release of chemicals in our brain that promote trust, empathy, and social bonding. Building belonging is essential in a fractured world and requires understanding and addressing our default setting. During this very special episode recorded during the Innovation Bay panel at SXSW Sydney's inaugural event in October 2023, an all star panel featuring Phil Morle (Main Sequence Ventures), Jenny Li (Scarlare Partners), Joel Connelly (Blackbird), and Skye Riggs (Ripple Opportunities) join moderator and guest Open The Pod Bay Doors host, Cameron Webb (Innovation Bay) to share insights on how to build belonging at speed and scale. They share strategies for welcoming new members and creating meaningful connections that keep people engaged over the long term. Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. After the most gruelling Upfronts season yet, we wrap things up with the people whose verdicts matter - the media agency chief investment officers. Plus, we speak to SBS managing director James Taylor about the series of agenda-setting announcements made by the public broadcaster. The most interesting, most unexpected and most meaningful upfronts - plus, who put on the best show?Upfronts Season finally ends this afternoon, with the ABC announcing its content plans for 2024.It's been the longest one ever, kicking off during the first week of September with Nine's Olympics-focused Upfronts taking over both the Hordern Pavilion and Hall of Industries in Sydney's Moore Park, while Mamamia staked its claim as the primary conduit to reach women at an event at Doltone House in Pyrmont. The next week came Independents Day, organised by the Digital Publishers Alliance with more than 20 members offering rapidfire presentations at The Grounds in Alexandria. The same night it was back to Hordern Pavilion, where Google's YouTube made the case for switching advertising dollars out of television during Brandcast. The following day, magazine house Are Media hosted buyers for a more modest lunchtime event at the new wing of the Art Gallery of NSW, turning on the star power with an appearance from Matilda's penalty scorer Cortnee Vine. Then in October it was on to the Beta events space in Castlereagh Street, as Carsales extended its Open House event from their Melbourne base into Sydney.A few days later, Seven puts its weight behind SXSW Sydney, returning to the ICC for its Upfronts, executive produced by chief marketing and audience officer Melissa Hopkins. The next week saw Ooh Media and Foxtel Media both put their events in the hands of the weather gods.Ooh's Outfronts trip to Sydney's Royal Botanical Gardens was rewarded with a scorching summer's morning. Foxtel's boat ride to Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour was a damper affair, although its blockbuster announcement of a breakaway audience measurement project wiped that from the memory.Meanwhile, Paramount took a different approach to its Upfronts this year, taking the lead from its sister network in the United States, CBS, hosting smaller groups to talk about plans for Ten, Paramount+ and Tenplay, followed by Q&A sessions.Between them, the media companies would have spent well in excess of $10m on letting the industry know their plans. So who told their stories best? We asked the media agencies' chief investment officers.GroupM CIO Melissa Hey, Spark Foundry CIO Lucie Jansen and Essencemediacom CIO Nick Thomas offered their takeaways in a special edition of the Unmade podcast hosted by Tim Burrowes.Who exceeded expectations?Foxtel's challenger measurement system for OzTAM drew praise.“I'm pretty excited about what Foxtel's doing, just disrupting the industry and leading from the front, giving our clients and us as an agency so many opportunities to change the way that we've been approaching video,” Thomas shared.“Paramount surprised me the most because I thought that you actually did get a lot more out of it. You go into it wondering how they're going to wow you in this small setting and I walked away very impressed and engaged with what they had to offer and what they're putting on the table because of that intimate setting, and because we were able to ask questions and interact. They were answering questions that were being asked versus just going up on stage,” Hey says.Thomas agrees: “At the big parties, you're never going to get that honest, direct conversation and feedback loop that you're going to have in the smaller groups.”Sport was pegged as one sector of the market that the CIO's were particularly excited about after seeing all the upfronts.“I think next year is going to be a really good, good year for sport. 2023, particularly with the Matildas, will only serve to help audiences in that space as well. Obviously, that probably plays more to the strength of Seven and Nine,” Jansen concludes. Most meaningful technology announcementA selection of new adtech products were rolled out at each network's upfront - Seven's Phoenix, Nine's SME-focused Ad Manager, Paramount's Shoppable TV and SBS Measure.Hey argues that Phoenix “will be really important and a game changer on how we operate with Seven.” She adds: “What is actually interesting and how it's going to roll out and impact for the future is Nine's Ad Manager. Whilst they're saying it's for SMEs, how they're setting that up and using AI feels just the start of the journey.“Thomas was excited about Ooh Media's 2024 prospects and its new retail media screen network solution, Reooh.“I think the premium Sydney product was a good strategic play to compete with the JCDecaux's and QMS's that are playing in the premium Sydney audience already. Everyone's talking retail. I think next year will probably be the year of retail. If you were a business and you wanted to set up a retail network, it's a plug and play product that you can use, which is great.”‘We might be the first moving in this direction. We don't believe we'll be the last'SBS' upfronts came just after the podcast with the CIOs was recorded, so Unmade sat down with managing director James Taylor to get a better understanding of the broadcaster's strategies and content slate for 2024.Key announcements from the SBS Upfront included limitations on betting, booze and fast food ads, progress on sustainability promises, another season of Alone Australia (this time shot in New Zealand) and retaining the men's FIFA World Cup.“We believe the purveyors of all products have a right to access audiences, particularly via a public broadcaster,” says Taylor. “This is, though, about providing value to both audiences and advertisers. If you think about on-demand environments generally, and SBS on-demand specifically, users are able to exhibit complete control over what they watch.“Therefore, we want to extend that capacity to allow audiences to express a view about the advertising component as well. We might be the first moving in this direction. We don't believe we'll be the last.“We think these three categories are a logical place to start. It's great for the audience because they get to provide us with information about their choices as opposed to us determining what we think they want.”Taylor also expanded on long term plans to help bring the entirety of the SBS supply chain to net zero over the next 20 years.“We rely on third parties and their carbon footprint to reach an audience member. So the timeline we've laid out, which is an aggressive timeline actually, and the most ambitious of any media player in the country, is really about us working with our supply chain to assist them in decarbonising their footprint.”SBS Measure, which uses Experian data, was the new adtech product rolled out at the upfront. Taylor explained the product was a way to “reinforce our credentials as a place that is worthy of our customers' investment.”And Taylor also explained why SBS is backing Foxtel's breakaway TV audience measurement project.“There's nothing lacking with Oztam from my perspective, we remain committed and enthusiastic participants in Oztam. We back the currency. We think it's a well-needed and welcome development in free-to-air's capacity to create a compelling offer to advertisers. That said, SBS is not a market maker. It's a market taker. We participated in a market. You should expect us to be inquisitive about other marketplaces that other providers are seeking to establish, so that we can form a view about whether or not SBS has a place in their marketplace.”* The entire podcast can be heard via the player at the top of this page or on the podcatcher of your choice. SXSW recently increased payments to performers from $250 to $350 but performers still have to choose between getting paid or getting access to a free wristband to attend the festival. This change happened as SXSW expanded its global footprint and just put on SXSW Sydney. Contributor Celine Teo-Blockey went to the festival and spoke to artists on what they think is fair treatment and pay. Here it is! This is the live recording of our panel at South By South West (SXSW) Sydney, from October 2023, on the topic “Why We Need Travel More Than Travel Needs Us”. It was such a thrill to be on the podcast stage at SXSW with Catherine Marshall, Susanne Etti and Justin Watson, three fabulous guests who had so many interesting stories and opinions to offer for this tricky topic. We start off with everyone sharing a story about what travel means to them, then dive deeper into topics like wildlife tourism, overtourism, and how we can travel better. "Curate your life" is something Joy has said since Day One of podcasting. Your camera roll on your smartphone holds the real life data of your everyday world. Look within the scroll. Can we use the internet to be more discoverable for opportunity and success and how exactly do we do this? How do we create works online and apply curation to our lives in a broader way. Joy debriefs attending the inaugral SXSW Sydney, the realness of festival fatigue, meeting new people, putting yourself out there to connect with new humans, music, composition, mansplaining and how to truly own being solo at a big festival. This episode is for everyone and the included exercise is a must do for today. Turn in on yourself rather than looking at someone elses scroll. You might be super suprised. This week Todd is sick so Jamie takes the reins and is joined by Bec and James from Melbourne garage-punk outfit, Delivery. We discuss how much fun we had hanging out together and playing at SXSW Sydney last week, the origins of Delivery, choking on burgers, negative horoscopes and heaps of other shit. We also partake in an impromptu ‘Silverchair - Straight Lines' singing competition. James aptly described the episode as "a psychotic hour of conversation". Truly loose gear, crew. “It is useful both to internal and external, but it's also a really great litmus test. If you sit down to write your public letter and you can't explain why you're doing something, if it doesn't fit in with your overarching strategy, it goes back to that first thing we said as PMs [product managers], which is sometimes you have to say no to it. You're like, I actually can't explain to anyone why we're spending time on this particular feature. It doesn't fit any of the four themes we said we're doing this year. Does that mean we have a fifth theme or does that mean we shouldn't be doing that? And that clarity and that kind of litmus test. Is really, really useful as a leader when few people say no to you.” - Tom Verrilli Fresh out of the studio in SXSW Sydney, Tom Verrilli, former Chief Product Officer of Twitch joined us in a conversation to discuss the intricacies of product management. Tom shared his perspectives based on his experiences from navigating the delicate balance between feature addition and reduction in product roadmaps and managing normal and power users' expectations. With the recent advances in generative AI, Tom offered his insights on how this new wave will bring about changes in user behaviour and interfaces, and how it will bring about new thinking in product management. Last but not least, he laid out what great would look like for product managers in the next decade. In Australia, about 1,000 people die of superbug infections every year. In this special live recording of a panel discussion at SXSW Sydney, Jane Lee speaks to Guardian Australia's health reporter Natasha May, physician and microbiologist Prof Jonathan Iredell and Prof Garry Myers about this looming global health crisis and the fight to protect the world from superbugs

Welcome to Season Four! We have arrived at SXSW Sydney for a wild week of talks, parties, events and conversations. This season is recorded entirely surrounding SXSW Sydney, supported by Soho House! In between our podcast guest conversations, I'm doing a round-up of all the things I'm taking in, and sharing them with you. I hope you enjoy part one of the roundup! Featuring takeaways from the Australian's In Film talk with actor Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, Mudbound, Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty and Zero Dark Thirty) and legendary director Phillip Noyce (Salt, The Quiet American, Revenge, The Resident) alongside Hollywood trailblazer, actor Charmaine Bingwa (The Good Fight) and Hollywood breakout screenwriter Amy Wang (Crazy Rich Asians 2). Moderated by Bec Smith. Next, I attended the keynote with Amy Webb. Futurist and CEO of the Future Today Institute Amy Webb gave an unparalleled keynote conversation about what's on the edge of tomorrow. She deep-dived into emerging tech trends and gave us a glimpse into what's next on technology's horizon. I adored her talk, and hope my round-up makes sense, some of the things I shared I'm still grasping! As broadcast October 16, 2023 for the first Monday in a while while! Tonight in our first New Muses Monday in quite some time, there were a lot of albums dropping from space and huge announcements as well. The foremost in our first hour being the second career solo album from Alabama Shakes vocalist Brittany Howard, who dropped the title track to the What Now LP, slated for release next year. First hour we had new albums to talk about from L'Rain, Helena Deland, Jamila Woods, and veteran Japanese band Lamp. Once we hit part three, the big bomb to drop is the latest LP from Bad Bunny, and we also had Pink Pantheress dropping a solo album in just a few weeks' time. Great stuff from the Korean indie and bubbling under K-pop scene as well in part 4, with ADOY heading to SXSW Sydney next month along with tunes from Summer Soul and Chamsom to check out, amongst others. "We might not have old rundown houses or shacks that are converted into brand activations, but we have boats and we have parks, and we have so many different opportunities for organizations and brands to profile themselves during South By, in interestingly different ways. When you're putting together an event like South by Southwest, I go back to what I said before about understanding what it means to different people, what industry they're from, what does success look like for them and what are their goals for the event? Right from the beginning how I've approached this and how our team has approached this and TEG, who is producing the event in Australia; We are building the stage. It's up to our creative communities to perform we're providing the platform. We're bringing everyone to Sydney. You are only limited by your imagination of what you can do or achieve." - Colin Daniels Fresh out of the studio, we had the pleasure of hosting Colin Daniels, the managing director of SXSW Sydney, who enthusiastically shed light on how the famous SXSW conference plans to make its debut in the Asia Pacific via Sydney. Unfolding the layers of planning and coordination involved, Colin gave us a sneak peek of what participants can look forward to - from film and music to arts, culture, technology, and innovation. Last but not least, Colin described what success would look like for the first-ever SXSW Sydney happening in October 2023. Podcast Information: The show is hosted and produced by Bernard Leong (@bernardleong, Linkedin) and Carol Yin (@CarolYujiaYin, LinkedIn). Uber launched at South by Southwest, as did Twitter, Pinterest and Foursquare. Billie Eilish was discovered as an unsigned 14-year old. Mumford and Sons first made their name at the creative-tech-culture jamboree in Austin, Texas. In three months time the world will learn whether the powerhouse event can replicate itself outside of the Lone Star State. SXSW Sydney MD, Colin Daniels, is backing Sin City to deliver – with the likes of futurist Amy Webb, Coachella co-founder Paul Tollet and Slack co-founder Cal Henderson joining “titans of every industry” across tech and innovation, music, games and screens. He says every one of its 70 featured speakers would likely be the keynote at any other event. No wonder circa 500 brands are keen to get involved – which is one of the reasons Seven West Media is going large, partnering with SXSW Sydney and planning to spring a very different kind of upfront during the week-long festival. Chief Revenue Officer, Kurt Burnette, said getting the investment over the line was a “difficult conversation”, but he's backing the play to position the network at the heart of the creative-tech nexus and change perceptions. CMO Mel Hopkins will have a big hand in shaping what that looks like. No pressure then. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of The GAP Luke Lawrie and Joab Gilroy talk about ice cream and sexy games. The games they've been playing this week include The Crew Motorfest, Marvel's Midnight Suns, PUBG, McPixel 3, Cats Hidden in Paris, and more. Today's edition features an interview with Colin Daniels, managing director of the first SXSW Sydney.Colin Daniels, the man bringing SXSW down underEntertainment and media festival South By Southwest is coming to Australia for the first time in October. The man responsible for bringing the event to Sydney is Colin Daniels - a veteran of the music industry including more than a decade running music company Inertia which he left last year after becoming managing director of SXSW Sydney.Daniels has racked up an impressive nineteen visits to SXSW over the years. His vision for SXSW Sydney is for it to be a combination of film screenings, networking events, conferences and other interactive set-ups designed to appeal to “the United Nations of the creative industries”.With less than five months to go, SXSW has now announced its first speakers including marketer and venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki, futurist Amy Webb, and GroupM CEO Christian Juhl.In conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, Daniels unveils what SXSW Sydney has in store for the Australian media and marketing community. The SXSW team has been developing the program in consultation with the local industry, although in the interview Daniels does concede he was initially hard to get hold of when interest in the event outstripped his ability to get back to everyone.Adland has been leaning into the local program. “Our number one attendee for SXSW Sydney based on registration and interest is the marketing and advertising industry," Daniels says.“For the media and marketing conference tracks, we had 200 submissions just from agencies and media organisations.”Audio production was courtesy of Abe's Audio, the people to talk to about voiceovers, sound design and podcast production.Message us: letters@unmade.mediaWe'll be back with Best of the Week tomorrow.
