On today's episode, it's the first day of class again in the classrooms I have apparently been banished too. BUT, lo and behold my old students rally around to have me move to where I belong. Isn't that nice? Also, major stomach issues on the train where me and the mayor's of Red Bank and Asbury Park, NJ all had a lovely Day at the Races and a picture with jockey great, Paco Lopez in the winner's circle. And finally, my car finally dies. Just shuts off in the middle of Tenth Avenue. YIPES! But, great podcast fodder so. . . you're welcome. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. Ain't no one getting younger right now, and that certainly includes the Senior Staff. With both Alex and Bruce hurtling though middle age, we thought we'd address the thorny questions that come with ageing in subculture, adapting one's listening protocols, and wrestling with the bugbear that is nostalgia. We also have some thoughts on Debby Friday's recent short film Bare Bones and the "TOS2020" charity single.
In a special Zoom interview with Mike Donehey from Tenth Avenue North, CJ and Joy get insight in to how Mike is dealing with quarantine life.
We’re here at Ballast Point Brewing in Little Italy, and today, we have Colby Chandler, Ballast Point’s vice president and specialty brewer. Colby is the second-longest employee of Ballast Point—he’s been with the company for 23 years. He was involved in the creation of their award-winning flagship beer, Sculpin, where he took two gold-medal-winning IPAs and melded the recipes into one. His version of their two beers is the Sculpin you know today. Today’s special guest is Chef Travis Swikard. Travis is opening one of the city's most anticipated restaurants, Callie, in the East Village, which we talk about in the Neighborhood Guide in the March issue. Callie is filling the space on Tenth Avenue where Bottega Americano was. Travis grew up in Santee, and he recently moved back to San Diego after working in New York City with acclaimed French chef Daniel Boulud for over a decade. Travis wanted to get back to local, fresh ingredients and a place to raise his two kids. Callie is his first solo restaurant. For Two People, $50, Travis chose Don Bravo, a small taco shop in La Jolla. David chose Tabu Shabu in North Park, and Erin liked happy hour at The Prado. Troy’s pick this week are the frittelle cacio e pepe (savory Italian donuts) from Cori Pastificio Trattoria in North Park, which he reviewed for our upcoming April issue. In Hot Plates, we talk about Prep Kitchen closing its doors in Little Italy, and Rock Bottom ending its run after being in UTC for over 20 years. The popular Food Network show "Restaurant Impossible" is taping at Kaiserhof, the German Restaurant in Ocean Beach. Normal Heights is getting a “hipster 7-Eleven” that’s going to open soon, complete with craft beer, a fro-yo bar, taco shop, and of course, kombucha on tap. We’re only one of the three cities in the country to get the company’s new “Evolution” stores. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, tell us about any news happening in San Diego’s culinary world, or let us know who you’d like to hear featured as a guest on the podcast.

Mike Garson in conversation with David Eastaugh - recorded 28th January 2016 Garson was David Bowie’s longest and most frequent band member. They performed together for both Bowie's first and last concerts in the United States as well as 1,000 concerts around the globe in between. Garson provided the piano and keyboard backing on the later Ziggy Stardust tour of 1972-73 and his contribution to the song "Aladdin Sane" (1973) gave the song an avant-garde jazz feel with lengthy and sometimes atonal piano solos. I had told Bowie about the avant-garde thing. When I was recording the "Aladdin Sane" track for Bowie, it was just two chords, an A and a G chord, and the band was playing very simple English rock and roll. And Bowie said: 'play a solo on this.' I had just met him, so I played a blues solo, but then he said: 'No, that's not what I want.' And then I played a Latin solo. Again, Bowie said: 'No no, that's not what I want.' He then continued: 'You told me you play that avant-garde music. Play that stuff!' And I said: 'Are you sure? 'Cause you might not be working anymore!'. So I did the solo that everybody knows today, in one take. And to this day, I still receive emails about it. Every day. I always tell people that Bowie is the best producer I ever met, because he lets me do my thing. Garson played also for Bowie's guitarist bandmate Mick Ronson on his first and last solo tour, and his first Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (1974) and second solo album Play Don't Worry (1975). Garson came to replace Ronson as Bowie's musical lieutenant on several occasions, notably on "We Are the Dead" from the 1974 Diamond Dogs album, where Garson's metronome-like keyboard provides a dramatic setting for Bowie's vocals, and on the title track to Young Americans (1975) where his jaunty piano leads the band. Garson played with Bowie on and off over the years, resurfacing on The Buddha of Suburbia (1993) and 1 Outside (1995).
This week's show features Jeff Owen, the guitarist and producer for Tenth Avenue North, ahead of the band's latest album, No Shame. Real Estate REality Check | Real Estate & Business Career Success Education and Training
Introduction: Today we have with us Jared Epstein, someone who for today’s podcast at least I am nicknaming “The Great Transformer,” given how he first transformed himself from being a Meatpacking District club promoter back in 2001 to becoming - over the following 6-year period - a commercial real estate broker with Newmark and a part of Bobby Cayre’s Aurora Capital Associates in 2007. Jared’s transforming and visionary ways at that juncture had only just begun, as he truly felt that Meatpacking’s vibe, pulse, architecture and landscape were ripe for a myriad of high-end hospitality, retail, office and residential uses. It wasn’t easy at first for “The Great Transformer,” but all one needs to do is to make like Lou Reed and take a “Walk on the Wild Side” down to Ninth (and Tenth) Avenue for that matter to witness the starring role that Jared played in Meatpacking’s transformation. Episode Notes: At 2:29, Jared Epstein believes that real estate is all about magic, connecting with people and speculating about the future. At 3:23, Jared discusses his mantra of never giving up and linking up with Bobby Cayre at Aurora Capital. At 5:41, Epstein shares working as a club promoter prior to his career in real estate, giving up late nights partying to advance his career, and his love for his role as “the wingman” at Aurora. At 7:25, he talks about his father and mother instilling the drive for success within him, as well as the importance of education. At 9:05, Jared touches upon being recognized in 2018 by Crain's as one of its 40 Under 40 recipients. At 14:10, Epstein speaks about The Rolling Stones and his son Jagger. At 15:50, he informs on the pros and cons of development and provides insight on the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. At 17:18, Jared highlights what Pastis means to the Meatpacking District neighborhood and discusses working with Restoration Hardware and Modell’s Sporting Goods as well. At 21:39, Epstein shares his thoughts on the discrepancy between what landlords perceive as market rent and what tenants are willing to pay, and how brands are positioning themselves on the most desirable streets. At 24:25, he notes the effect of the “fun police” and how real estate taxes play a major role when structuring a deal. At 26:10, Jared wholeheartedly subscribes to the adage of knowledge is power. He advises that as a developer you must know the DOB code and zoning. At 28:53, Jared stresses the need of putting yourself second behind your community, neighbors, partners, and also going to bat for tenants. At 31:22, Epstein speaks on congestion pricing and the value untapped in NYCHA. At 33:41, he dishes on there being a reason why you only have two ears and one mouth. At 34:45, Jared reflects on how he has stayed (and continues to stay) current and connected to the younger generation. At 35:53, Epstein advises that all things are best done in moderation. At 36:47, he talks about emails, texting, and keeping up with news and current events. At 38:36, Jared believes that the convenient truth in real estate is that there is a winner and a loser in every trade. At 40:25, Epstein dives into Opportunity Zones spurring economic development, Long Island City, and Amazon. At 42:24, he shares his thoughts on the trade war, retail, and brick and mortar. At 43:42, Jared answers the question of how he finds the balance in life. At 44:50, Epstein reveals his good luck charm which he purchased with $400 in his checking account with the help of his then girlfriend and now wife. At 46:35, Jared Epstein closes the podcast with a message on evolution and the circle of life in the real estate industry.
