In this Thanksgiving-themed episode of The Struts Life, host Leah Jones and Jed Elliott share how the band first experienced America's iconic holiday while on tour in Cleveland, enjoying a festive dinner, football, and family vibes with their crew. Jed reflects on how Thanksgiving's heartfelt traditions, like sharing gratitude, differ from British customs and praises its warmth. The band also drops exciting news, including an extra show date for Luke Spiller's performance with Mike Garson in Los Angeles this December. Jed then takes listeners behind the scenes of his unexpected Hollywood debut in Beautiful Wedding, where he played Jimothy, an eccentric English announcer at a fictional Mexican wrestling festival. With humor and self-deprecation, he recounts wardrobe malfunctions, on-set jitters, and the surreal experience of being part of a chaotic yet unforgettable rom-com. Closing out the episode, The Struts recommend music for the holiday weekend, highlighting Blink-182 and Fontaines D.C. as top picks. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the band, this episode invites you to celebrate rock, humor, and connection with The Struts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ongoing History of New Music

Rock'n'roll is built on the electric guitar...well, mostly...and not really in the beginning...in fact, the electric guitar as we know it, didn't have much to do with the birth of rock at all... The earliest rock evolved out of rhythm & blues combos...by the early 50s, many of them featured some kind of electric guitars...but the honk and rhythm came from saxophones and pianos which were slowly pounded into matchsticks... The piano contributed bits of jazz, boogie-woogie, barrelhouse, and juke-joint energy...and even through the 1950s, the construct known as the “guitar hero” was largely absent from the world of rock'n'roll—outside of chuck berry, of course...  Instead, the early pioneers were piano heroes...Little Richard...Jerry Lee Lewis...Fats Domino...Ray Charles...Huey “piano” Smith...  But when guitars got louder, started sounding dirtier, and began to wail more powerfully, the number of rock'n'roll piano heroes were outgunned and began to recede into the background...not entirely, though... Again, I'm talking just about pianos...none of this fancy synthesizer stuff... Elton John, Billy Joel, and Carole King have had massive careers based largely on piano songs...the Beatles—especially Paul McCartney—served the cause...Freddie Mercury of Queen wrote much of their greatest songs on piano... There are others...Leon Russell, Mike Garson (who played with Bowie for years), Chuck Liddell (a favourite of the Rolling Stones), Dr. John, Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Rick Wakeman of Yes, Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer... But you notice what's missing from that list?...any piano heroes from the world of alt-rock...does even such a thing exist?...actually, yes...they're a bit hard to spot, but they're out there...here—let me show you... In this episode we talk to the one and only Mike Garson, pianist extraordinaire! From playing with the Spiders from Mars to improvising one of the most extraordinary passages in pop music – that utterly frenetic piano solo in Aladdin Sane – to the elegance of 2003's Reality - Garson was one of the only musicians to have played with Bowie across decades, sculpting the sound for Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Black Tie White Noise, Outside, Earthling, Heathen and Reality. And, as he explains here, he was originally only hired for eight weeks…! In this episode, Mike talks us through his story, demonstrates his process live and reflects on how, almost half a century later, people still love that solo.  Check out everything Garson here

Michael and Rae chat about his incredible journey of discovery and the process of developing a catalogue and his inspiration from Ray Charles and his ability to explore all genres of music as an artist and a songwriter. The critically acclaimed old-school crooner Michael Tinholme brings his stylings to his latest album Singled Out. A 13-track journey soaked in Tinholme's smooth and sophisticated jazzy stylings, backed by genre giants performing at their best. Opening the album is a rendition of the Bowie classic ‘Lady Stardust', that sets the tempo for this technically proficient and soulfully rich project. Tinholme's interpretation of the legacy track bleeds respect for the original while showcasing what makes the artist and his band so special. Backed by long-time Bowie collaborator and the song's original pianist Mike Garson, Michael's cool vocals dance across a dynamic range fitting of Lady Stardust's legacy, while saxophone and piano solos, and beautiful backing singers envelop listeners in a sonically rich and wonderous experience. Singled Out delivers on the promise of its opening track. Shifting between fantastic renditions of all-time greats and Tinholme originals standing shoulder to shoulder, the album transports listeners back to the time of jazz as a juggernaut, all the while making the most of contemporary production, stylings, and calibre of talent. Joining Michael are the aforementioned Mike Garson, jazz guitarist Mike Miller (Better Midler, Quincey Jones), the acclaimed drummer Gary Novak (Chick Corea, Natalie Cole), and legendary guitarist Steve Lukather (Toto, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney). Michael's path to the company of musical prestige was one hard tread. Adopted into a military family at only seven months old, Michael was constantly being relocated all the while suffering extensive abuse. Amongst the catharsis, the artist found solace in music. A perfect fit, Michael played his first professional show aged only twelve. While the journey there forth remained difficult, with spouts of foster care and homelessness, two threads remain constant from Michael's collaborators: his kindness and his passion. It is with dedication, talent, and a relentlessly tenacious spirit then that Michael brought himself to the remarkable stature he holds today. We only had David Bowie's Piano Man, Mike Garson, for 45 minutes, but boy did he make every second count. His stories, golden treasures, were matched by the mastery of his impromptu music. I first saw Mike play on the Diamond Dogs Tour, where Bowie soared above the audience in a cherry picker to sing Space Oddity. Here, 47 years later, Mike told the tales of that tour (and Ziggy Stardust) with Mick Ronson, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Carlos Alomar, and bookended the show with an original Bowie Variation of said song––stunningly beautiful, soulful, and emotional. I'm still a bit teary. From backing Mel Torme, Gregory Hines, and hundreds of singers in the Catskills starting at 14, studying with Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz amongst other jazz icons, to an 8-week gig with David Bowie that endured through 40 years, 150,000 hours of playing has sure paid off. Mike's classical training to the fore, he treated us to a few improvised gems weaved betwixt sensational stories––how he started, got the gig, played it differently every time with David's blessing, how Aladdin Sane got so avant-garde and insane, playing with Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, composing with Trent Razor for film and TV, recent gigs with Duran Duran and Def Leopard to name but two, Mike's Symphony Healing Suite, which evolves and continues, giving back what he's learned––teaching––improv for one, a skill he says can be learned. A most inspirational, educational, and enjoyable Game Cha-Cha-Changers, which left me wanting more. Luckily, Mike continues A Bowie Celebration (virtually through the pandemic) with other original band members. The rendition I saw at the Orpheum in 2019 was killer. I sit here moved, missing David, grateful as hell for Mike. Plata þáttarins sem við heyrum amk. þrjú lög af er í tilefni dagsins platan Aladdin Sane með David Bowie sem kom út 13. Apríl 1973, en Bowie hefði orðið 74 ára í dag ef hann hefði lifað. Aladdin Sane er sjötta plata Bowie og sú sem kom út næst á eftir tímamótaplötunni The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars sem er platan sem gerði Bowie að stjörnu. Þann 3. júlí árið 1973 lauk hljómleikaferð Ziggy Stardust og The Spiders from Mars um hinn vestræna heim á hljómleikum í Hammersmith Odeon sem bæði voru hljóðritaðir og kvikmyndaðir. David Bowie special with Woody Woodmansey in conversation with David Eastaugh Woodmansey joined Bowie's backing group The Hype, which later became The Spiders from Mars. He played on Bowie's albums The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972) and Aladdin Sane (1973). Woodmansey was replaced in The Spiders from Mars by Aynsley Dunbar, who played on Bowie's next album, the 1973 covers album Pin Ups. Woodmansey re-formed The Spiders from Mars for one album, along with bass player Trevor Bolder. This necessitated a change of personnel, with Dave Black on lead guitar because Mick Ronson was unavailable and Pete McDonald supplying lead vocals. Guest keyboardist was Mike Garson, who had been a major part of Bowie's line-up from the Ziggy Stardust days. Bowie made no contribution to the album which was named The Spiders From Mars.

How will you be celebrating the millennium? December 31st, 1999.  Will you be screaming in fear, dancing your anxiety away, or preparing a blood tribute for a dark and ancient God? In 1995 David Bowie foretold this future, with the help of Brian Eno, Mike Garson and others.  Have no fear, your Bowie Boys (Steve, Marc, Eric)  listened to this strange, shimmering spectacle of Tomorrow, dissected it song by song, and are presenting it to the ritual stone.  Who killed Baby Grace Bellew?  Maybe you'll get your answers here.  Maybe you'll only get so many more, horrible questions. One thing is for certain, we collectively butcher the correct pronunciation of a certain guitar player who most likely was a big fan of too many zippers on a pair of pants.  Pod Like a Hole LinksFacebook Instagram TwitterPatreonVideo LinksThe Hearts Filthy LessonHallo SpaceboyThe Leon SuitesStrangers When We Meet

Mike Garson in conversation with David Eastaugh - recorded 28th January 2016 Garson was David Bowie’s longest and most frequent band member. They performed together for both Bowie's first and last concerts in the United States as well as 1,000 concerts around the globe in between. Garson provided the piano and keyboard backing on the later Ziggy Stardust tour of 1972-73 and his contribution to the song "Aladdin Sane" (1973) gave the song an avant-garde jazz feel with lengthy and sometimes atonal piano solos. I had told Bowie about the avant-garde thing. When I was recording the "Aladdin Sane" track for Bowie, it was just two chords, an A and a G chord, and the band was playing very simple English rock and roll. And Bowie said: 'play a solo on this.' I had just met him, so I played a blues solo, but then he said: 'No, that's not what I want.' And then I played a Latin solo. Again, Bowie said: 'No no, that's not what I want.' He then continued: 'You told me you play that avant-garde music. Play that stuff!' And I said: 'Are you sure? 'Cause you might not be working anymore!'. So I did the solo that everybody knows today, in one take. And to this day, I still receive emails about it. Every day. I always tell people that Bowie is the best producer I ever met, because he lets me do my thing. Garson played also for Bowie's guitarist bandmate Mick Ronson on his first and last solo tour, and his first Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (1974) and second solo album Play Don't Worry (1975). Garson came to replace Ronson as Bowie's musical lieutenant on several occasions, notably on "We Are the Dead" from the 1974 Diamond Dogs album, where Garson's metronome-like keyboard provides a dramatic setting for Bowie's vocals, and on the title track to Young Americans (1975) where his jaunty piano leads the band. Garson played with Bowie on and off over the years, resurfacing on The Buddha of Suburbia (1993) and 1 Outside (1995).

01 - BLACKSTAR (2016) 03 - BEST OF BOWIE (2002) 05 - NOTHING HAS CHANGED - THE VERY BEST OF DAVID BOWIE (2014) 09 - HUNKY DORY (1971) 10 - THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST (1972) 20 - ALADDIN SANE (1973) 27 - LOW (1977) 28 - "HEROES" (1977) 30 - DIAMOND DOGS (1975) 31 - THE NEXT DAY (2013) 32 - STATION TO STATION (1976) 36 - SCARY MONSTERS (1980) 42 - LET'S DANCE (1983) 43 - YOUNG AMERICANS (1975) 52 - THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (1970) 63 - PIN UPS (1973) 66 - LODGER (1979) 79 - SPACE ODDITY (1969) Í þessum öðrum þætti af þremur skoðum við tímabilið frá 1973 til 1987 í lífi Bowie, en á þessum árum var Bowie allt í senn; tilraunaglöð fyrirmynd, unglinga-ídol og rokkstjarna. Space Oddity 1969, The Man who Sold the World, Low, Heroes, Lodger, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps, Young Americans og líka á Black Star og plötunum þremur þar á undan. Mike Garson píanóleikari Bowie´s allar götur frá 1973 og þar til hann steig síðasta á svið verður á línunni í þættinum og talar um tímana þegar hann var með Bowie í Philadelphia að taka upp Young Americans og um Diamond Dogs túrinn ofl. Svana Gísladóttir sem býr í London og gerði myndböndin við lögin Black Star og Lazarus með Bowie stuttu áður en hann lést kemur líka við sögu, og eins Ragnheiður Hanson sem féll 13 ára gömul fyrir manninum og söngvaranum og stóð síðar að hans einu heimsókn til Íslands ? tónleikunum í Laugardalshöll 1996. Björn Jörundur úr NýDönsk segir frá í þættinum, en hann jeillaðist 8 ára gamall af David Bowie og það eina sem hann óskaði sér í afmælishjöf þegar hann var 9 ára var nýja platan frá David Bowie - platan Lodger. Mike Garson is an incredibly accomplished pianist and composer who is known for his work with David Bowie,  Nine Inch Nails, Free Flight, Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as an impressive solo career in both the jazz and classical realms. He recently premiered a twelve movement work entitled Symphonic Suite for Healing where he partnered with brain surgeon Dr. Christopher Duma and collaborated with patients to use music as an aid in the healing of various disorders, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Mike is a lifelong learner who has studied with Leonard Eisner of Juilliard, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock,  Lennie Tristano and more. He is also someone who shares his knowledge of music through teaching master classes and private instruction, as well as through guest lectures on university campuses worldwide. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mike at his home studio in Los Angeles and talk about his path as a musician and as a human being.I am really excited to have  Mike on the Podcast for two reasons. He is truly someone who is a master of his craft and yet claims to know less about music now than he did in his 20′s. He has demonstrated over and over a deep passion for music as an art and for using his talents and gifts to give back and inspire others. IN THIS EPISODE: Growing up in Brooklyn Why he enlisted in the Army What he has learned by devoting 160,000 hours of practice to the piano How he manages to “spiritually juggle’ his marriage of 46 years, 2 daughters, and 6 grandchildren Why he has a gratitude practice DISCOVERY QUOTE: “The prerequisite for any kind of new understanding requires you to realize you don’t know it all”  - click to tweet! In episode 12, I start out with a discussion of a writer's creation of the first draft of a novel. I compare it to mowing your yard or cutting your own hair with your eyes closed. There will be lots of 'holidays' you missed, and the whole job needs to be cleaned up, but the first step of the process is complete. At the end, you'll wonder what the hell you just wrote, but you gotta start somewhere. Next, I talk about books people say they've read when they really haven't. Surprisingly, one of my favorite novels appears at the top of three such lists. I go through some top tens of these books and discuss my familiarity or lack of with these titles. My final segment is a movie review of "Behind the Candelabra", the story of Liberace and his young boyfriend. It was an entertaining movie, and Matt Damon and Michael Douglas were fearless in their performance. The budget wasn't large, but they limited their locations so that wasn't noticeable. I talk about Liberace's kidneys shutting down from exposure to Carbon Tetrachloride dry cleaning solvent, as well as plastic surgery stories. Also covered is how Liberace was a devout Catholic and what happened to his body after he died. Michael Douglas did a fantastic job faking the piano playing. I correct an error I made in the last episode regarding Mike Garson, the finest improvisational rock and roll piano player of all time. He was a long term member of David Bowie's band. The archives of my podcast are at PaperbackRocker.com. You can find my books on Amazon under my name, Matt Syverson, or you can contact me at bowiefan1970@live.com if you would like to buy a signed copy. Please leave a review of my books on Amazon if you read them. THANKS and please share my podcast with somebody if you enjoy it. I have to go feed my Scottie now before she eats the walls. My books are "Black Dog", "Band on the Run", and "Running On Empty". I have a new book called "Blue Whiskey" coming out soon. All of them are rock and roll-themed fiction.

Cammarata grew up playing in club bands (started on the Stax/Volt catalog) in Baltimore, MD. At 17 he was afforded the privelege of recording 2 singles on the local Bay Sound label with the 'semi-legendary' George Massenberg producing. In 1974 he relocated to Los Angeles for the express purpose of becoming a rock star. The Zippers (1976 to 1981). This was anti-disco/corporate hair band time in LA. The best description of The Zips is they were kinda the unholy offspring of The Kinks and Cheap Trick . The band released a single on Backdoor Man Records in '78, and a subsequent Ray Manzarek produced 6 song EP on Rhino in '81 just before they  imploded.Cammarata used the next 5 years  establishing a new career in production and musical prostitution. This afforded him the opportunity to work with new and established artists; playing guitar, doing background vocals, arranging... whatever. From this grew a nice referral list of pro players hired for 'one-shot' parts. The result was a succession of reciprical session work with guys like sax man Cornelius Bumphus, violinist David Green, pianist Mike Garson, and a whole boatload of interesting and 'art-for-art's-sake' musicians. After a self-imposed 20 year hiatus Cammarata found himself in Phoenix. These days Cammarata performs with partners The New Brothers; a stripped-down, 3 man, guitar/vocal trio. The songs have taken on a new interprative persona live; mostly because, as Cammarata puts it... "The songs are what they are; naked. I expect my bandmates to dress them as the situation demands. Obviously, playing with guys like Charlie (Dickens) and Reggie (Chavez) makes this intuitive.... it's intentional."His music has been described as "An amalgam of gutter-blues, spaghetti-western mastication, and late night innuendo".
