We've come to the end of the road, my friends. I logistically don't know what that'll mean for being able to download episodes of the podcast, so if you've got a backlog to listen to, now's the time to download them because by the end of this month, I'm not sure we'll be hosting them anymore. It's been a blast (and occasionally a chore) watching shitty streaming series with you all and we hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have.
“I was ill-equipped to do anything else,” jokes Amy Sherman-Paladino. “It was survival of the fittest maybe. My father was a comic. My mother was a dancer. It was basically, pick something in show business because that's all you got.” “We both infuriate inspiring screenwriters because we're not the people who wrote a ton of spec. We sort of fell into,” says Daniel Paladino. “Amy was a dancer. I was a musician. I got a job as a writer's assistant because typing in the 80s was a rare commodity because everyone wrote long-hand.” Turning these handwritten documents into typed screenplays taught Daniel the business. “I think I can do this,” he told himself. “Then, maybe the 10,000 hours of watching TV before that as a child just sort of created a natural flare for it — all the time I wasted in my youth.” Amy got a job writing for the series Roseanne, where she worked 4 years and wrote 13 episodes. A few years later, there was an opportunity to write a “comedic hour long” where she pitched several ideas. The one she spent the most time on and even optioned IP for led to crickets, but when asked if she had anything else, she replied, “Just this one with a mother-daughter where they're more like friends than mother-daughter.” This was Gilmore Girls. “Amy had written 2-3 pilots based on mother-daughter relationships that were different than Gilmore Girls. I remember when she pitched it, thinking this should be the last mother-child pilot you write, and it was ultimately,” jokes Daniel. Gilmore Girls ran for 154 episodes on the WB and there's a 4-part mini series on Netflix called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. While Gilmore Girls was on, Daniel ran Season 2 of Family Guy. In 2017, going even more personal, the screenwriters delivered The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, about a comedian in the 50s who follows her calling once her husband leaves her. Want more? If you borrowed a pencil from LJ and didn't return it, there's a good chance she still holds some anger over that. Or if you kinda blinked wrong in her directions, she's probably still a little mad about that as well. Join LJ and Di while they break down an episode of the masterpiece television show, Gilmore Girls A Year in the Life. What purpose do grudges hold in our lives? Can we let go of them? And what if we harbor all of these feelings for something we perceived as a wrong but in the end wasn't?
This week we're talking about the first episode of the Gilmore Girls reboot and we have a lot of... feedback. Kirk's Uber storyline drives us nuts, Lorelai is acting like even more of a maniac than usual, and why can't anyone get cell service in 2016??But it's not all downhill. We discuss Emily and Lorelai's cathartic argument, the feeling of coming home to Luke's, and Michel's triumphantly perfect return. What movie would you just watch over and over again? For Jake, it's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Kim's pick is Just Go With It, and Kalee's is You've Got Mail. But today, we're going to be talking about movies that have let us down and have burned us! HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: The second of the Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi, just let Jake down. This movie had a new director and they just ruined the characterizations of most characters. Why we think the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was the worst mini-series ever! Kalee hates My Bestfriend's Wedding. Why did Julia Roberts' character made her cringe? Kim's pick is Message in a Bottle. She didn't realize Nicholas Sparks has this pattern. The first two releases of the The Godfather were perfect, but we didn't like the third one. (Check out our The Godfather movie night theme as well as our recipe for Clemenza's spaghetti.) Why The Suicide Squad (the second one) didn't blow Kim away. Now, Jake explains why he thinks superheroes movies should be “the weirder, the better” Other movies that just burned us: Hanging Up, City of Angels, Donnie Darko (why Jake thinks it's the worst movie ever made), All About Steve, Kate and Leo's movie reunion Revolutionary Road, and The Shape of Water. Katrina Jørgensen returned for another fun discussion about culture and how media-saturated millennials see the world. Terrible Opinions Katrina: I hate Thanksgiving food. Jordan: I can’t help judging adults who spend a ton of money on Halloween costumes. Matthias: The internet did not give us the permenance or expansion we hoped for, but an increasingly ephemeral "dust in the wind" existence and we should avoid that. Writing as fast as you can Katrina is participating in National Novel Writing Month this year, so she shares some insights on how the annual challenge to write a novel in one month brings writers together. The goal in theory is to write 50,000 words in a month, but the main point of NaNoWriMo is simply getting people to write. “Binge-worthy” Netflix recently released some rare numbers showing which shows are being binge-watched the fastest: a top 20 list with shows that are watched within the first 24 hours of release. We analyze what insights we can glean from the list, which includes everything from “The Ranch” to “Santa Clarita Diet” to “Grace and Frankie.” Jordan explains why it’s awesome that “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” is No. 1, but the other titles on the list are more relevant. We talk about why comedies are so much better for binge-watching than dramas – especially when the world is already hard enough – and debate whether or not the instant gratification of streaming changes how we watch TV.
