The other day I was driving down our local interstate highway and I found myself stuck behind a car that wouldn't move out of the left lane. The driver was not only driving under the speed limit, but drifted to the left and over the line several times, then quickly catching themselves and making a course correction. When I finally had an opening to pass them in the right lane, I looked over to see if the driver was ok. While the driver was conscious, had a hand on the wheel, and their eyes were open, their other hand was texting on the smartphone that was holding their attention. I'm sure all of us have not only seen this from time to time, but have been tempted to do the same ourselves. Recent research from the University of Pennsylvania reminds us that we need to teach our kids to put the phones away while they are the wheel. Teens who use their phones while driving are more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors, including hard braking and rapid acceleration. We must all drive to the glory of God.

Once again I want to issue a warning regarding our teenagers of driving age. We must never forget that they are inexperienced drivers. Consequently, we need to be warning them to take precautions regarding the known risks to teenage safety behind the wheel. A new study from the American Automobile Association outlines the three most common driving mistakes that teenagers make when they are behind the wheel. Because driving is an act of worship, remind your kids to avoid these mistakes so that they might not only drive safely, but bring glory to God. First, warn them against speeding. Second, remind them to avoid distracted driving. This happens most often when there are other people in the car, and/or when they are focused on their phones. Finally, remind them to keep their eyes scanning the road for risks and hazards. Too many teens get tunnel vision while they are driving. Driving is a privilege. Help your kids keep themselves and others safe on the road.

Recently, while working at my desk in my office, I heard a loud bang at the intersection just outside my window. I quickly turned and saw a car with a hood that had crumpled as a result of rear-ending a pick-up truck. The young woman driving the car had a cellphone in her hand. Now I'm not sure if the cellphone had distracted her or if she was making a call, but what I saw did remind me of the dangers of texting while driving. New research finds that teens who use cellphones while they are driving are not only in danger of being distracted and wrecking, but they are also more likely to engage in other types of risky driving. The research found that forty-four percent of the teen drivers surveyed said they'd been in at least one crash, and seventy-three percent report cellphone use while driving. And those who report cellphone use are also more likely to engage in speeding, aggressive passing, and running red lights. Warn your kids, and teach them that driving is an opportunity to give glory to God.

Verdicts against those who text while driving can be quite expensive
Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death among teenagers here in the United States. There are a variety of reasons for this including the inexperience of teen drivers, and the fact that many teens take risks when they are behind the wheel. In today’s smartphone saturated world, the death rate has increased due to teenagers engaging in distracted driving as they text and talk while they drive. New research reported in the journal Pediatrics tells us that states which have implemented texting while driving bans have significantly lower overall crash death rates involving teen drivers. Currently, texting is banned for drivers in forty-eight states and the district of Columbia. The study concludes that no one of any age should use a mobile device when they are driving. Parents, you should not only be setting an example with phone-free driving, but you should also instruct your kids that it is their God-given responsibility to obey the law. Driving is an act of worship.
you should never text and drive because it's not safe

Jennifer Pastiglione discusses trauma related accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently completed a study that reminds us that the number one cause of death among teenagers is car accidents. The study reports that while teenagers are fairly well-informed regarding driving laws and safety practices, they get into accidents for two main reasons: inexperience and risk-taking. The report says that the most common driving mistakes made by teenagers are driving too fast, driving too close to other vehicles, and distracted driving. Recommendations made to parents of teen drivers include monitoring their driving during the time when they have a probationary license, and reminding them of the teen driving risks and dangerous behaviors. We would add to that the need to teach our kids to integrate their Christian faith into their driving, which is also good advice for us as adult drivers. We need to see our time behind the wheel as another opportunity to bring glory to God. Our driving should be an act of worship.

Matt McLogan, vice president of university relations at GVSU, joins Grand Rapids Press political editor Jeff Cranson on this week's Talking Michigan Politics. recorded at One Trick Pony in downtown Grand Rapids. Thanks to proprietor Dan Verhil. The topics include: 1. The race for governor. A poll out Tuesday (PDF) from Lansing-based EPIC MRA confirms that the Democratic field has a ways to go in capturing interest, let alone excitement. Some 72 percent of those polled said they don't recognize the name of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, and 53 percent don't recognize House Speaker Andy Dillon who was preparing a run for months before sending more obvious signs upon Lt. Gov. John Cherry's departure from the race. In the poll, Dillon leads Dems with 22 percent, followed by Bernero with 15 percent and the candidate in the field the longest time, state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith of suburban Ann Arbor, with 11 percent. On the GOP side, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Holland continues to lead with 27 percent; while Attorney General Mike Cox netted 21 percent and Ann Arbor venture capitalist Rick Snyder scored 15 percent, a drop from his numbers in other recent polls. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, the only candidate besides Cox to have run a statewide race, notched 13 percent. After hearing background on the candidate, Hoekstra remained at the top with 26 percent, while Snyder moved up considerably, tying Cox at 21 percent. Bouchard gained two points. 2. Congressional races. Some Michigan seats are up for grabs, including those held by Democrats Mark Schauer and Gary Peters, who will most assuredly be targets of those gathering for Tea Party Express stops this weekend. Most intriguing is the battle to oust Schauer, who left the state Senate in 2008 and rode President Obama's coattails to victory in the mostly rural, GOP-leaning, southern-Michigan district. Battling to replace him is the evangelical conservative he upset, Tim Walberg, and Brian Rooney, the grandson of famed Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney. Brian Rooney is a 7th District transplant, having moved to Dexter in 2009. 3. Texting and driving. With a Senate-approved bill to ban texting while driving and make it a primary offense, all eyes are on the House. Gov. Granholm has indicated she would sign the bill if it makes it to her desk. Jack Lessenberry made a compelling case for the legislation in a recent essay. Conversation starters: • Jeff on former alpinist and author Greg Mortenson's visit to West Michigan and his "books not bombs" message. • Matt on April 15 deadline to file state and federal income taxes. Despite efforts to simplify the form, it is more complicated than ever.
