Send us a Text Message. It's July, the time for conference media days, and the countdown to fall camp. I am joined for this episode by Brad Geiger and Neil Langland, and we are going to go out on a limb and give you our projected starting lineup for the CU defense and special teams for the 2024 season. We also take our preview a step further, and discuss how each unit of the defense compares to the rest of the Big 12. Our criteria:– Tier One: One of the top four units in the Big 12, capable of taking the Buffs to title contention if the rest of the team is equal to the task;– Tier Two: 5-8 in the Big 12. A strength, a unit which can help CU to a winning record and a bowl berth; – Tier Three: 9-12 in the Big 12. A liability, but, if the unit can avoid injury and live up to its potential, can help CU get to a bowl game; and– Tier Four: 13-16 in the Big 12. A problem area. A unit which might drag CU down to another losing season. So ... Will the complete overhaul of the CU defensive line be a smashing success? Or ... Will it be a shrug-of-the-shoulders failure? ... Can the deficiencies in the linebacker corps be masked by the upgrades in the rest of defense? ... And, will Travis Hunter, backed by one of the most talented defensive backfields in recent CU history, be able to not only put himself in position for a top draft pick, but also for national post-season awards? He also addresses other disruptions, such as port backups and global trade policies, which compound the complexities faced by professionals in the field. According to Jeff, staying informed through reliable 3PLs and brokers and leveraging technology and software applications is crucial in dealing with these issues.Jeff Peterson explains that they handle customs audits by focusing on security and compliance. They take a proactive "shift left" approach, doing necessary work upfront to avoid audits. Their comprehensive strategy helps mitigate risks to both business and national security.Talking about the challenges at the US-Mexico border, Jeff explains that security is the main focus. He believes in creating comprehensive programs that offer career paths, hands-on experiences, and continuous learning opportunities. When it comes to future-proofing the industry, Jeff advises Tier One and Tier Two leaders to focus on the people aspect of the business first, have an action plan, maintain pristine data, and be ready to pivot as necessary. Our season on Culture of Care continues this week with a discussion of academic and social/emotional support for students, specifically the Tier Two level of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) rubric. Tier Two is a particularly difficult level to address, coming between Tier One, which all students receive, and Tier Three, which requires one-on-one help. Host Dr. Amy Yillik's guest for this conversation is Jamie Gunter, a counselor for LaPine High School and Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the entire Bend/LaPine district, who suggests various approaches for Tier Two support when adequate staffing and funding are lacking. This episode offers many options for schools who struggle to support these Tier Two students in terms of substance usage, suicide prevention, and other social/emotional and academic needs. Suggestions range from a Graduation Coach who works with students beginning in their freshman year, to a designated Focus Room for any student who needs space and time to self-regulate, learn skills, or talk to a counselor. Schools without these resources could still utilize Youth Truth Surveys and host social/emotional campaigns throughout the year. Individual educators can help students with calming and self-regulating measures, such as grounding and breathing exercises. Oregon was one of the first states to mandate programs of suicide prevention in schools, but funding is insufficient to implement these programs. This episode is vital listening for educators wanting to support students in need. This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist,. Gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti has reaffirmed annual production guidance for 2023 after third-quarter gold production improved versus the second quarter, continuing the recovery from setbacks faced in the first and second quarters at its mines in Brazil and Guinea. The New York- and Johannesburg-listed UK domiciled AngloGold, which has recorded no fatalities in the nine months to September 30, continued to build third-quarter momentum with a 3% increase in gold production versus the second quarter of the year. Gold production rose to 673 000 oz in the third quarter of 2023 from 652 000 oz in the second quarter of 2023 mainly due to higher ore tonnes processed partly offset by lower overall recovered grades. The three highest gold production gains quarter-on-quarter were from Africa, with Iduapriem up the 27%, Siguiri up 22% and Kibali reporting a 13% increase. These increases in gold production quarter-on-quarter, which included South America's Serra Grande's 9%, again Africa's Geita at 6% and then Australia's Tropicana at 3%, were partly offset by were partly offset by a 19% lower production performance at Obuasi in Ghana, 13% lower production at AGA Mineração in Brazil, 5% lower production at Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina and 3% lower production at Sunrise Dam in Australia. Adjusting for the placement of Córrego do Sítio in Brazil in care and maintenance, gold production was up 5% quarter-on-quarter. AngloGold has been taking steps to close the value gap with its international peers. These efforts involve initiatives to enhance cost-efficiency and extend the life of its mines while also prioritising safety, optimising cash flow, and ensuring the successful delivery of projects. The primary listing migration to the NYSE was completed on September 25, to enable enhanced access to the world's largest capital market and improved positioning alongside the gold industry's most highly valued companies. "Gold production has improved in the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to step up again over the remainder of the year, in line with our guidance," CEO Alberto Calderon stated in a media release to Mining Weekly. "We continue the work across a number of fronts to enhance our competitiveness versus our peers; our corporate restructuring is complete, we've continued to sharpen our operational and project focus, and we're on track to deliver on our decarbonisation commitments," Calderon added. As part of the approach to narrow management focus and direct its capital allocation to the Company's Tier One and Tier Two operating assets, as well as its high-return development projects, the process of placing the loss-making Córrego do Sítio mine in care and maintenance began during August 2023, and the sale of 50% indirect interest in the Gramalote project to B2Gold Corp was completed. Studies related to AngloGold's first development in the Beatty Mining District in Nevada, USA, are advancing with disclosure earlier this year of an initial 8.4-million ounce of mineral resource and an initial exploration target of between six and eight million ounces from the Merlin deposit being reported. A final investment decision for North Bullfrog is anticipated in 2024, once the appropriate permits have been received. Furthermore, the decarbonisation programme has been advancing at the Geita site, in Tanzania, and at the Tropicana site, in Western Australia. Preparation for connecting the mine site to the Tanzania grid, which has a high percentage of its power mix from renewable energy sources, is well advanced, while at the Tropicana project, works have commenced for the construction of a 62 MW wind and solar facility. Additional salient points from the third quarter of 2023 include: • Geita, which recorded improved gold production versus the prior quarter of 2023, being on track for a strong finish to the year with a production target of 500 000 oz. • Kibal...
World Rugby has announced the details for its new men's competitions. 12 teams are going to compete in the new World League outside of the World Cup, though they haven't decided what the actual name is going to be. It could be the World League- or it could be something else entirely, we don't know yet. Anyway, the new competition will put the six nation sides in a tournament alongside the All Blacks, the Wallabies, the Springboks, the Pumas and two other teams. It hasn't yet been confirmed, but the reports at this stage suggest that Japan and Fiji are likely to take up the final two slots. There will be a Tier Two competition with promotion and relegation, but that doesn't start for several years after the Tier One. The other big changes are going to come with the men's Rugby World Cup. The competition will be expanded to more teams, but shortened in terms of its length. So there's going to be a new 16-team knockout round between pool play and the quarter-finals. There is a central question at the heart of all of these changes- what's the priority? Is it to make as much money as possible from the game in the short-term, or is it to grow the game into new rugby markets? Because if you want to grow a game in order for it to have a global footprint, you really need to ensure that teams aren't just playing- they're actually competing. Turning up isn't enough, they actually have to be kinda good. And how do teams get good? It's a combination of resources and experience playing stronger opposition. There is a really good example right now in the Cricket World Cup- with its players steadily increasing their amount of experience playing against tougher opposition. Afghanistan has stunned Pakistan and England in the 50 over format. I definitely think a shorter Rugby World Cup makes sense and having more teams will benefit the likes of Brazil and the Netherlands and Hong Kong- who are on the cusp of being in the top 24 in terms of the world rankings. But you have to feel sorry for the better Tier Two teams that are really facing a possibility of even fewer games against Tier One opposition. What do I mean? Think about Samoa and Tonga, for example. In the islands, rugby isn't an off-Broadway sport like it is in Brazil and the Netherlands. Other countries might squeak their way into a bigger World Cup, and that's great. But in the islands, it is the sport. And yet, those teams are going to find themselves outside of the World League with very few opportunities to play big teams outside of the Rugby World Cup. What's that going to mean when they turn up every four years for the likes of Samoa and Tonga? A thrashing, most likely. World Rugby is caught between conflicting priorities. They want competition structures that reward existing rugby fans and make a lot of money for the dominant teams- but they also want to expand the game. And for those of us who only care about the All Blacks playing the very best teams- sure the new format might be enjoyable enough. But if you care about rugby in the Pacific, I don't think this is it. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Former All Black Sir Bryan Williams is voicing concern over the future of the Rugby World Cup for Tier Two nations. World Rugby has announced an expansion to 24 teams for the next event in Australia in 2027, including two extra pools and a round of 16. There'll also be a 12-strong Nations League starting in 2026, which will pit the Six Nations sides against the Rugby Championship teams, plus two invitees. Williams says this news is 'disappointing' for nations like Samoa and Fiji- and claims there'll be an imbalance at the next World Cup. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tier two (R2) research and smaller institutions, including two-year, minority-serving, and tribal colleges, can now build solid research infrastructures and perform groundbreaking discoveries through research enterprises on the same scale as larger R1 and flagship universities. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Drumm speaks with Sethuraman Panchanathan, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). They discuss how his organization helps democratize ideas in higher education, enabling all colleges and universities to solve real-world problems and revitalize their communities. The NSF achieves this through programs like the Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity (GRANTED) and Enabling Partnership to Increase Innovation Capacity (EPIIC). Dr. Panch also discusses NSF's mission and vision. He talks about its recent $44 million program that helps fund projects across the US. Additionally, Drumm refers to another NSF program as "a tech transfer on steroids." Moreover, they explore what smaller institutions with few resources need to do to start conducting research. Podcast Highlights NSF's Regional Innovation Engines is a $44 million investment that partners with communities to utilize regional potentials like the Hazleton pilot converting hemp into carbon-negative building materials through collaboration with Penn State University and community colleges. The cross-cutting TIP Directorate pulls discoveries into the industry, creating impactful solutions by fostering partnerships and bringing back new ideas to address real-world problems. GRANTED and EPIIC programs support the growth of research infrastructure and capacity at national and minority-serving institutions, enhancing access to resources and regional innovation ecosystems. NSF's strategic focus includes research, education, partnerships, and research infrastructures, with initiatives like BP Innovate, EDU Racial Equity in STEM, and the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to promote inclusion and quality in STEM education. NSF partners with organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the Walton Family Foundation to improve the quality of US STEM education for all students. GRANTED provides investment in research infrastructure, and institutions can reach out to the program coordinator to present competitive ideas and connect with successful participating institutions.
