This week, we review one of the hardest and most entertaining albums ever made from a rather unique figure in hip-hop. None other than Tim Dog and his debut album Penicillin On Wax, released in 1991. Tim Dog, frustrated with the dominance of West Coast hip-hop (namely N.W.A) proceeds to viciously attack the group and others with singles Fuck Compton and Step To Me. But Tim shows throughout the album that anyone can get it, from the west or not. Production primarily from the Ultramagnetic MC's, the rough beats combined with Tim's rough rhymes make this an underground classic. https://instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igshid=MzMyNGUyNmU2YQ== https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=LQQJ4d

Ced Gee stops by Unique Access with Soren Baker to discuss his belief that Scott La Rock was assassinated. The Ultramagnetic MC's member also tells Soren Baker that he shouldn't have produced Tim Dog's LP. The Bronx rapper-producer also says it is his fault for not getting “Criminal Minded" production credit & that Ultramagnetic MC's passed on a Def Jam Recordings deal. Ced Gee also details Schoolly D being an anomaly, how Salt-N-Pepa's success cost Ultramagnetic MC's, why he hates “Funk Your Head Up” & that the “Saga Of Dandy, The Devil & Day” needed to be done.

For the unfamiliar – Beef Rap is not a bovine offshoot of the popular music genre. To have ‘beef’ with another person is to take umbrage with something they have done or said. In Rap music, these issues are best addressed through the medium of song. Fury is not always the motivation for starting a lyrical feud. Some are looking to make a name for themselves, assert their overall dominance over the entire genre or, if you’re in and around of the Ultramagentic MC’s, you do it for the belly laughs. As out of our depth as Busy Bee preparing for a battle rap with Kool Moe Dee, Blastfrom takes you through an idiots guide to Beef Rap on this episode of the Blastfrom Castfrom. We discuss the Bridge Wars, Tim Dog vs The City of Compton among others. And of course, we examine the most over analysed rap feud of all time – Jay-Z vs Nas. The fans, the ‘experts’ and the artists themselves have all addressed and come to their own conclusions about this legendary beef – but perhaps the feeble view of three Scottish dorks will finally settle the argument.

Let the Record Show – the crate-dug interview series in which musicians, DJs, rappers, and producers discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl – continues with its “Socially Distant Series” of video-conference episodes. Episode 49 features indie-rap-sensation-turned-funky-drummer J-Zone. With the release of the fifth Du-Rites album A Funky Bad Time coming on November 13th, J-Zone joins hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace to dig through some of his favorite tracks. Early 90s hip-hop deep cuts from Ice Cube, Terminator X, Schoolly D and Tim Dog show the clear influence seen in J’s early rap solo recordings on Old Maid Entertainment, while a selection of refined rare grooves from Kool & The Gang, Slave, and Jack DeJohnette exemplify his love for drumming as a part of The Du-Rites. In each case, oddball pressings and vinyl rarities are showcased for each song. J-Zone’s appearance on Let the Record Show marks the 49th episode in the series and the fourteenth episode of Season 4. Guests on previous episodes this season have included Cut Copy, Blu & Exile, Sofi Tukker, The Free Nationals, R.A. The Rugged Man, RJD2, Little Brother, Cam O’bi, Dudley Perkins, YehMe2, Rittz, SNAILS and Malik.
Joe Nicolo has had an outstanding career as a multi-grammy winning producer but is also best known for founding one of the seminal independent record labels Ruffhouse located in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Ruffhouse went on to sell over 100 million records. He has received a Recording Academy Heroes Award and was inducted in the Philadelphia Walk of Fame. Key Takeaways [1:47] Nick welcomes Joe “The Butcher” Nicolo and asks him about his youth in Philadelphia and his twin brother who still operates Studio 4 as well as where he got his technical skills from. [9:10] A revolution in music… Joe tells the story of how he inherited the early Philadelphia Rap scene at Studio 4 and eventually worked at engineering and/or producing a lot of the early stuff with Jive Records. [15:06] Before sharing the story of starting Ruffhouse, Working at Studio 4, and being a staff producer at Columbia Records, Joe vents on an issue that 34 years later “doesn't bother him at all.” [19:50] Joe talks about the first act he recorded for Columbia and begins listing off the impressive list of artists starting with the legendary Cypress Hill record as well as the inception of Kris Kross with Jermain Dupree and the creation of the incredible blockbuster song “Jump.” [27:00] The infamous Cypress Hill event on Saturday Night Live; Joe shares the story, expletives included! [28:30] The Fugees were found by Columbia's street team and were signed after a memorable office performance which left Wyclef in his underwear, standing on a Fender amp — this leading to 14 million copies sold for “Killing me softly.” [34:54] Balancing entrepreneurship and being a producer was easy, thanks to his partner Chris Schwartz; Joe speaks to that relationship, as well as having had early and sustained success — which makes things easier in general. [40:11] Selling Ruffhouse to Sony and getting his baptism of fire in the movie business was an interesting change for Joe but his creative heart was always in music. [43:30] Joe tells about working on Billy Joel's River of Dreams, about the nine Grammys he's won, and he shares an anecdote on meeting his mentor, Beatles' producer George Martin. [48:05] On being inducted into the Philadelphia walk of fame as well as starting a foundation called SoundMind Network and his current projects. [53:40] Nick thanks Joe for coming on and sharing so much of his story. Thanks for listening! Sounds From The Underground: Hip Hop Lifestyle and Marketing Podcast presented by Insomniac Magazine
Cedric Miller aka Ced Gee entered the Hip Hop game decades ahead of his time. As a member of one of the most groundbreaking groups in the genre's golden era, Ultramagnetic MCs, he did double-duty as emcee and producer. Beyond creating classic music with Ultra, he also crafted multiple songs on "Criminal Minded" the iconic debut album from another of Hip Hop's most influential and revered groups, Boogie Down Productions. If that weren't enough to solidify a prominent place in Hip Hop history, in 1991, Ced produced the notorious Gold-selling track, Funk Compton, by another Bronx talent, the late Tim Dog. In this interview, the veteran beatsmith and emcee, provides insight with Iz-Real into his career, early drum machines used (including E-mu's SP 12), as well as current production gear, insight into his new projects and much more. Ced shares that he just wrapped production on an upcoming music video for his new "Delta 5" track (listen below) and is currently in the midst of working on his first, yet to be titled solo album, and other projects. Don't sleep on this discussion with a true Hip Hop legend, Ced Gee.

This is who 'you know who' was biting... This is the original, not the wack re-recording...3. M.A.X. (Clutch Shooters) - My Inner Soul IV (The Masterpiece)This instrumental deserves the respect... It's not easy to get on my mixtapes... Special thanks to M.A.X., my CD's would not have come out yet without you...4. Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One) - 30 Cops or MoreNot included on the Edutainment LP... Prototype Hiphop/reggae joint... Very slept-on!...5. Aim f/Diamond D - The OmenNew Diamond D shit!... He brings back that early 90's fresh... This Aim-produced version, surprisingly, I like more than the Diamond D remix...6. Chi Ali - Chi Ali vs. Vanilla ShakeThe most slept-on joint from 'The Fabulous Chi Ali' LP... I always loved this beat...7. Doujah Raze - Looking up (instrumental)A.C. speaks, and rhymes... This b-side beat is extremely slept-on...8. A.C. Speaks With His Hands (sucker DJ medley)Inspired by and dedicated to the sucker DJ's with no ear... Some have one, some don't... Not everyone was meant to do this...9. Da Lench Mob f/Ice Cube - All On My Nut SacOne of the last two classic joints Ice Cube ever made, both from Da Lench Mob's first LP, Guerillas In The Mist (se: You And Your Heroes)... What happened Cube? You used to be so fresh...10. Gangstarr - Dough In Advance (unreleased)Not on any LP... Guru told me it's never coming out, but I saw a few bootlegs last year at Amoeba&Arons, damnit!... I have been playing this joint for three years...11. Large Professor - Bullshit (unreleased)From the unreleased Geffen Large Professor LP... I had this song in '95, and my EX-homie jacked me for it...12. Melodramatic - Letting Go Of That#4 on this singles' B-side... Very fresh, catchable beat... The A&B sides weren't nearly as dope, and I had to mix in the next record real quick before the corny singing comes in and kills the vibe...13. Compton's Most Wanted - Whose Is It? (Give It Up II)Very dope, classic, slept-on B-side... Too many kids don't know or care enough about what CMW meant and still means to Hiphop music... Three classic LP's... To me, this group means more to Hiphop than most of the current so-called 'underground' self-proclaimed legends every will...14. Mighty Casey - Making SureThe only artist on each of my first three mixtapes/CD's... Soon to return, reside and claim his Cali respect...15. Laq Nun - Weigh ScalesMost slept-on joint from the Mission Control comp.... I even slept for a minute... Dirty, raw and fresh! Just like my mixtapes...16. Alliance - I've Found ('88, unedited for first time)From the legendary First Priority (Audio Two) producer King Of Chill... Like Mahogany (Eric B & Rakim), a great example that a Hiphop love song can be done without being corny or watered-down... Thanks for the tip Marvski (What's up with a gig, gee? )...17. Porn Theatre Ushers - CatnipRare classic single.... Mr. Jason is a great slept-on producer/DJ... I'm sorry we haven't been able to put them on a 3rd Place show yet...18. Kool Keith f/Tim Dogs' - I Ain't Havin' ItKool Keith rocks this slept-on joint from Tim Dog's infamous Penicillin On Wax LP... I just put Keith's verse on this mix, and I know Tim ain't a great MC, but he made a lot of good music... Two good LP's, some classic joints...19. Mobb Deep - Shook Ones (exclusive fresh remix)Fresh mix for all you sucker DJ's who killed this song because you couldn't think of anything else to play, i.e. Tried By 12, MC's Act Like They Don't Know, Buddy, Come Clean, Times Up, etc....20. Jeru The Damaja - Great Solar StanceDopest and most slept-on joint from Jeru's dissappointing post-Primo, Super Human Klik LP... If only the whole album would have been this good...21. Louis Logic f/Grand Agents' - Service The TargetI had to put this verse on a mix... The very slept-on Louis Logic steals the show...22. Skinny Boys - Jockbox (America Loves The Skinny Boys) ('85)The grand finale! Too many kids don't know about this mid-80's classic... Pure, high energy, ultra-fresh, timeless Hiphop music!...

We talk; making 'Abrasions' and its creative process, chemistry, working with the many artists featured on 'Abrasions' such as David Banner and Shawn Pen who Planet Asia attributes as an underrated artist, 'Abrasions' initially having a different title and being signed to Mello Music Group. In addition to this Planet Asia speaks on the recently released Alchemist laced Durag Dynasty project, an upcoming collaboration with Melanin 9 and more, before shooting down the rumour of an alleged Madlib collaborative project. Beyond this, Gensu Dean reveals a forthcoming collaborative project with fellow Mello Music artist 7evenThirty and more! Essential listening. 2013 marks the return of the Ultramagnetic MC's with a brand new album and supporting European tour. Ever entertaining and knowledgeable, veterans Kool Keith and TR Love speak exclusively on Conspiracy Worldwide on a wave of topics, including the main event that is the new album and their upcoming European tour. The group’s reaction to a question regarding the alleged death of Tim Dog is both surprising and to some extent, shocking. Could Tim Dog still be alive? Listen to the end of part 2 of this episode for even more confusing evidence suggesting that hip hop may still have within its community the east coast hardcore legend himself. The man who singlehandedly brought back Conspiracy Worldwide Radio, commonly known as Kid Vibe, makes his debut appearance on the show to discuss his group Paleface Junkies and their history. We talk the dumbing down of hip hop, society and the need for artists to create their own world with their music. Check out the videos discussed here and here.
