On The Spark this Monday, ABC27 meteorologist Dan Tomaso joined host Asia Tabb to talk about the recent stretch of refreshing weather in Central Pennsylvania — a welcome change after a hot and humid July. “We’re coming off just a beautiful weekend,” Tomaso said. “It started out Friday with cooler weather and cloud cover — and I hesitate to say it on the air — but it felt like fall.” The crisp air and lower humidity came as a surprise to many. “I was at the pool on Saturday and the whole place cleared out,” Tomaso joked. “Maybe it was too much of a change, but regardless, the change is here.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Over the past two weeks, Central Pennsylvania has traded April showers for an almost unbelievable stretch of spring sunshine. As ABC27 Meteorologist Dan Tomaso put it, “It’s kind of phenomenal that this time of year…we’ve had lots of sunshine, very little active weather,” making it “the perfect recipe” for spring sports and outdoor plans. After a damp start to April and a few chilly weekends, the region has seen more days in the 70s—and even flirted with the 80s in the extended forecast—than the cooler 50s and 60s typical of early spring.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Central Pennsylvanian's have been experiencing bitter cold conditions this past week. ABC 27 Meteorologist Dan Tomaso says it's due to the artic outbreak which was a huge area of cold air. "It's almost like a big blob of cold air that came across the Arctic Ocean, ultimately into Canada and then into the United States." Tuesday morning's weather broke a record of the coldest morning since 1994, which was the coldest day in Harrisburg being recorded at -22 degrees. "So to put things into perspective, no records being set, but some of the coldest air we've seen in about 30 years time. And so now looking ahead, we're going to start digging out of that. Temperatures in the middle 30s, upper 30s, as early as Sunday and early next week. And I do think we're going to be out of this extreme weather pattern looking at things kind of flattening out with the jet stream, which means not as cold but also not as warm kind of average." As for another round of snow, Tomaso believes there is not a huge chance for another snowstorm. " I think it would be more snow showers and not necessarily accumulating snow, but that's when temperatures are getting into that middle. To upper 30s range. That could be, again, a situation where it's snowing, but maybe it's not accumulating. It's melting on contact. But again, something we're watching, nothing significant. And then beyond that, still not a whole lot going on. We may go into February. Kind of quiet in the snow department as of right now." This week, the temperatures were higher in the morning compared to the afternoon. ABC 27 Meteorologist Dan Tomaso says when we think of the high temperatures in the afternoon, once the sun is up and warms the ground, the ground heats the air and that’s when we see the spike in high temperature. Following the movement of the air tells a lot about the upcoming weather pattern. “So, this is all basically due to the balance of the jet stream. And so, when we mentioned the jet stream, the jet stream is just the main carrier of weather across the country and it's a zone of fast-moving winds. And it can meander, it can move around. And it sometimes is very straight across the country and sometimes it kind of snakes up and down. We were in a huge upswing of the jet stream as of yesterday, and that's what led to so much warmth coming from places like Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean. That was all allowed to flow in our direction. Well, now we're on the downswing and the downswing is really sharp this time around. So that allows cold air to basically replace the warm air. So, we go from one extreme to the next. Cold air comes diving in from the north, and all of a sudden, we start to get very cold. Sometimes we call this cross polar flow if it comes from the North Pole. But basically, that just means there's truly some Arctic air moving into the region.” According to Tomaso, we are entering winter late. Compared to last December, this month is warmer and rainier than it’s been in the past. “And so it really does shorten our winter in this area to January, February and maybe early March to see snow. I mean, it is very, very hard to get substantial snow any more in November in this region or excuse me, in December in this region.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hurricane Milton and Helene devastated many states including Florida. ABC 27 Meteorologist Dan Tomaso planned a family vacation in Florida, but it was postponed for a few days due to Milton. “So, I was there about three days after the hurricane hit. And again, luckily, the Orlando area did not experience major issues, especially in the area that I was in. But the farther west you went across Florida, the more damage, wind damage like rain and wind gusts in excess of 100mph for a few locations.” Unfortunately, according to Tomaso, the Hurricane season for 2024 is not over. The waters of the Caribbean are currently warm and that's where storms begin. “And there are several models that are that advertised, computer models that have advertised something happening either right near Halloween or in the days following Halloween from the Caribbean northward to, say, possibly Florida. We're hoping that's not the case or even along areas of the East Coast. So, what essentially has been happening lately for us is just these big areas of high pressure coming in and leading to all this dry, sunny weather for fall and even warmer than average weather.” Now that we are heading into wildfire season, Tomaso urges smokers to not litter as the ground is drying up. “If you are out camping, if you are driving along the highway and there's woods, it's as simple as don't throw your cigarette outside the window because everything right now is turning so dry that we have a lot of kindling near the ground. And any tree debris, any leaves that can catch fire very quickly. And on a breezy day like day, it's something to be aware of that fires can get out of control very quickly.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There has been a drastic change in weather over the week as students returned back to school. ABC 27 Meteorologist Dan Tomaso says Hurricane Debbie has changed the weather pattern. While the hurricane is long gone, it essentially disrupted our summer weather pattern to the point that we had somewhat of a cooler weekend temperature wise this past weekend. We had this deep dive of a broad area of low pressure that brought in some humidity from south, but also showers and thunderstorms. And for some folks, on Sunday of this past week we had some pretty strong thunderstorms, some heavy rain, especially in parts of eastern New York, western Lancaster County that all set the stage for more cooler air to follow. So oftentimes there's several steps to get where we are. And so, once that trough of low-pressure kind of dug in, it allowed cold air to drain southward from Canada. And I don't think anyone's going to totally complain, because this is kind of a taste of what we expect toward the end of September and October, but high temperatures, low to mid 70s. I was looking here this morning. We had 50s to our north and northwest. There could be some 40s and upper 30s that night leading into the next couple of mornings, especially if you're in a sheltered valley location. The air is very dry, but it's also very cool. So overnight, that leads to some chillier conditions leading into the next day. But unfortunately, if you're looking for rain, which we're doing fairly well in that department now, we may not get rain for another week. So, it is very, very quiet and very, very pleasant, which again, I don't think anyone's going to complain about.” Tomaso predicts the wind will shift by the weekend, which will take us into summerlike weather. “I expect by Saturday and Sunday will be in the middle to upper 80s and even early next week. So, the first day of school may be pretty hot. For those trying to plan all those new outfits that have been purchased. I think highs near 90 are possible next Monday and possibly into next Tuesday, and then rain chances may pick up Tuesday into Wednesday next week, but that's pretty uncertain at this point. And I guess the bigger story right now is this is moving into the peak of hurricane season. Ernest, though, went out to sea away from us again, leading to all this nice weather locally, but there's nothing really on the horizon for big rain chances from anything tropical.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Heading into the month of September, we are heading into the peak of hurricane season. The Central Pennsylvania region just experienced remnants of Hurricane Debbie in the past week. ABC 27's Meteorologist Dan Tomaso, says hurricane season is roughly between August though September. “Most of our impacts from any hurricane or tropical storm will be from heavy rain. And really, if you think about it, where these storms come from, thousands of miles away, it's the tropics. So that tropical air moves with the circulation. And unfortunately, if there is a tropical storm or a depression remnant, whatever, and it lingers over a certain period of time, it can lead to very heavy rain. Debby was unique in that it dropped a very narrow band of very heavy rain, and it didn't linger. It was only here for about 12 to 16 hours, but it was here long enough that parts of the Susquehanna River basin picked up 5 or 6in of rain, which can locally lead to problems. And as we saw, that can lead to flooding. It can also lead to, water table issues that unfortunately water supply can be affected. And I know residents of Mechanicsburg, parts of eastern Cumberland County, had water boil issues, that they had to boil their water first before using it. So all those things come with unfortunately, these storms and you know it for some people that may have just moved to this area, may not think is think of Pennsylvania as a state that could get affected, but absolutely it can be” National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down in Dauphin County on Friday. The tornado had a peak wind speed of 105 per mile and was 300 yards wide. It touched down near Gibson Street around 4:33 a.m. traveling 3.48 miles north according to the National Weather Service. “So Harrisburg, the surrounding area was on the eastern side. There tends to be a lot of spin and that moisture, that humidity actually can help some of these updrafts lift and create tornadoes. And so unfortunately, we do say Wednesday when the track seemed about final, that it was going to go west of the mid-state, that we could be in line for some brief tornadoes. And the timing was very unfortunate that it was 430 in the morning. We were standing by ready, but a warning was never issued. And the tornado did hit parts of Harrisburg, from about the Steelton area northward into Susquehanna Township.” Tomaso suggested there will be more hurricanes coming to the East Coast region in the next couple of days. So unfortunately, there's already another storm that will likely become a hurricane here in the coming days. That's her nest. So it is currently a tropical storm and strengthening over the Caribbean that will likely head out to open water. And then unfortunately, it could its path could take it in the direction of Bermuda and possibly eastern Canada. So that's the next storm. But as I mentioned earlier in the interview, we are now moving into the peak part of the season, and all indications are this is going to be an extremely active season already. We can see signs of that with Debbie in Nest. So for instance, so the East Coast still could see another storm or two that comes up through or possibly even more. We're hoping it doesn't get to that point because as we just saw the heavy rain that comes with these things. Yes, it's a good thing when you have a drought, but if you had repeated storms like this, it is not a good thing. So it is something that is actively on our mind that we're going to be tracking every single storm that develops. And you may say, where do they develop? Well, well, east of the Caribbean sometimes. So over the central antic ocean again, where there's no human being anywhere in sight. And so we track them from that spot onward. And so, for instance, we were tracking Debbie for about ten days. And so by the time day five, day six came about, that's when we started to really pick up on the trends that this is going to be a Pennsylvania problem, too.
