In this episode of The Art Career, Emily sits down with the incomparable Melissa Auf der Maur — musician, visual artist, filmmaker, and co-founder of the multidisciplinary arts center Basilica Hudson.Known for her role as the bass player in iconic 1990s rock bands Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa's journey spans far beyond the stage. From self-producing solo albums to launching a nationally recognized cultural venue in Hudson, NY, Melissa has spent the past two decades creating space — literally and metaphorically — for artists to gather, experiment, and thrive. This conversation covers the full spectrum of her creative life: music, motherhood, mythology, and the radical act of sustaining a long-term, independent practice. We also talk about her upcoming literary memoir, which will explore her time inside the legendary 1990s rock scene — set to be released in 2026 by Grand Central Publishing / Hachette Books. We discuss:• Touring the world with Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins• Creating Basilica Hudson as a haven for artists and community• Her deep roots in visual art and photography• Storytelling, place-making, and the role of women in music history• Writing her forthcoming memoir on the 90s rock eraFollow Melissa: @xmadmxLearn more about Basilica Hudson: basilicahudson.orgFollow Emily: @emilymcelwreath_artFollow The Art Career: @theartcareerMelissa Auf der Maur was born and raised in Montreal, Canada where she received a fine arts education focused on music and photography. Sponsored by Tierra Farm; Music by Aaron DessnerRecently our Executive Director, and podcast host, Martin Ping sat down with Melissa Auf der Maur, an artist, musician, photographer and writer – probably best known in musical circles for her turn as the bass player for the band Hole from 1994-1999. Melissa is revered locally as social entrepreneur, she's the co-founder and director of Basilica Hudson, a nonprofit multidisciplinary art center in Hudson, NY. We consider Basilica to be a sister organization to Hawthorne Valley. Not only are we neighbors geographically, our missions are very much aligned when it comes to supporting the arts and addressing the important environmental and social issues of our times, and we are grateful that Melissa said yes to sitting down with us. Hers is an intriguing biography and it was a fun, and wide-ranging conversation as she and Martin touched on everything from Melissa's musical career, to the origin story of Basilica Hudson, to the impact of gentrification on the city of Hudson and its surrounding communities, to the role the city of Montreal played in her formative years. Coincidentally, Melissa also happens to be celebrating her 50th trip around the sun this year. Visit Basilica Hudson's website. Make a donation.Donate to Hawthorne Valley.
Tomorrow is Earth Day and Basilica Hudson is putting climate action at the forefront of its mission as it reopens this weekend for 2022. Founded in 2010 by musician Melissa Auf der Maur and filmmaker Tony Stone, Basilica Hudson is housed in a reclaimed, solar-powered 1880s industrial factory on the riverfront of Hudson, NY. In 2020, Basilica Hudson celebrated its 10-year anniversary with the expansion of BASILICA GREEN. Building on Basilica Hudson's long-standing commitment to environmental advocacy and the City of Hudson's waterfront. On April 24th, BASILICA GREEN programming will activate multiple spaces on campus inviting the community to celebrate Earth Day Weekend. Free activities will include a teach-in on greening the grid, environmentally-focused art and youth activities, a workshop on how individuals can divest from fossil fuels, food, live music and more. Melissa Auf der Maur joins us now to tell us more about this weekend's Earth Day events – and other upcoming events at Basilica Hudson.
This week on the podcast, we sat down with musician Melissa Auf Der Maur (Hole, The Smashing Pumkins) & director Tony Stone to chat about their brand new movie entitled Ted K. Ted K is a 2021 American historical crime drama written, directed, produced, and edited by Tony Stone. It stars Sharlto Copley as domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber. The film depicts the events leading to his arrest. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKxmdETbxT8 #tedk #hole #smashingpumpkins
Ted Kacynski, known as the Unabomber, brought a lot of attention to the small town of Lincoln Montana during his high profile arrest in 1996 following a spree of bombings. Several documentaries, TV movies and shows have been inspired by Kazynski, but the latest film, 'Ted K', which had its North American premiere in Missoula in February, takes a different lens to the main character. Tony Stone wrote, directed and produced Ted K, and earlier this week host Micah Drew spoke with him about his work in the film industry, what it was like bringing the story to life and how important Montana, and the town of Lincoln, was to the process.Later in the show, Micah runs through the latest news of the week.Read more about all of this week's stories and get the latest breaking news at flatheadbeacon.com and sign up for our new daily newsletter at flatheadbeacon.com/newsletter.RELATED LINKSMarch 16 E-Edition‘Ted K' Brings Unabomber Back to LincolnFirst Units Completed at New High-end ApartmentsBlacktail Mountain Joins ‘Powder Alliance' Pass ProgramCanada to Drop COVID Tests for Vaccinated VisitorsThe music in this this episode is “Thinking Music” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License, The episode also features two songs from Montana singer/songwriter Mike Murray's album We Are Like Warriors, "The Good Ol' Days You're In" and "Moment of Time," used with permission.Read more about all of this week's stories and get the latest breaking news at flatheadbeacon.com and sign up for our new daily newsletter at flatheadbeacon.com/newsletter. TED K immerses us into the addled world of Ted Kaczynski, living a life of almost complete seclusion in a simple wooden cabin in the mountains of Montana. But then this former university professor, who despises modern society and its faith in technology, becomes radicalized. What begins with local acts of sabotage, ends with deadly bomb attacks. To the outside world, Kaczynski becomes known as the Unabomber. Based on Ted Kaczynski's diaries and writings, and his infamous “manifesto” director Tony Stone takes the viewer on an intimate and infuriating kaleidoscopic true crime journey into the life of one of America's most complex and eccentric killers. TED K features a tour-de-force performance from Sharlto Copley who portrays the complexity of this unique outsider, raging at the forces of both the inescapable technological society that plagues him and his own inner demons. Director, writer, producer and editor Tony Stone (Severed Ways, Peter and the Farm) joins us for a conversation on what attracted him to telling this story from the Unabomber's point-of-view, filming on the property where Kaczynski's infamous cabin once stood and the importance of Sharlto Copley brilliantly blending together Kaczynski's self deluding righteousness with the arbitrary ruthlessness he directed at his hapless victims. STUDENT SUNDAY: The Faith Test - Tony Stone (Guest Speaker): 04-29-2018 by Pastor Ray Harmon
Up In A The Cloud. Chansons entendues pendant l'émission Modlee - More U Give (LiamLiamLiam Remix) (2:15) Elaquent - Celebrate Life (4:12) Maky Lavender - Fairview Term (12:45) Maky Lavender - Pull Up In A Cloud (29:22) Fouki - All Zay (ft. Chansons entendues pendant l'émission LK Tha Goon, White-B & Enima - Blow (4:30) Planet Giza - Benz & Rice High Klassified - Hihi Loud - On My Life (Feat. Winning At Self-Care with Dr Trevin Fugere, Chevonda Allen, Jessica Aziz and Tony Stone: 07-16-2017 by Pastor Ray Harmon
In Tony Stone’s latest film, Peter and the Farm, Peter Dunning is the proud proprietor of Mile Hill Farm, which sits on 187 acres in Vermont. The land's 38 harvests have seen the arrivals and departures of three wives and four children, leaving Peter with only animals and memories. The arrival of a film crew causes him to confront his history and his legacy, passing along hard-won agricultural wisdom even as he doubts the meaning of the work he is fated to perform until death. Haunted by alcoholism and regret, Peter veers between elation and despair, often suggesting to the filmmakers his own suicide as a narrative device. He is a tragedian on a stage it has taken him most of his life to build, and which now threatens to collapse from under him. Peter and The Farm sifts through the potential energy of a human life, that which is used and that which is squandered. Imbued with an aching tenderness, Tony Stone’s Peter and The Farm is both a mosaic of its singular subject’s transitory memories and reflections—however funny, tragic, or angry they may be. Director Tony Stone (Severed Ways, Out of Our Minds) joins us to talk about his beautiful, haunting and heartbreaking, film. Episode 37 of One Week Only! This week's key film is "By Sidney Lumet," a documentary about the life and career of master filmmaker Sidney Lumet. Featuring an in-depth interview with the director before his passing in 2011, the film covers his childhood acting career, his philosophy on acting and directorial vision, and behind the scenes of his classic films Network, 12 Angry Men and many more. The film is now playing in New York and Los Angeles from Augusta Films and PBS American Masters. Next week, the AFI Film Fest starts in LA, and runs from November 10th to 17th. We want to recommend some of the smaller, genre, off-the-radar films to check out: The Lure, Nocturama, My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea, Prevenge, The Untamed, & The Eyes of My Mother. We also review the documentary "Peter and the Farm" about a rugged individualist living alone on his organic farm, directed by Tony Stone; awkward comedy "Rainbow Time" about two brothers fighting over a new girlfriend, directed by Linas Phillips; and family comedy "The Pickle Recipe" about a cash-strapped Bar Mitzvah entertainer who tries to steal his grandmother's renowned pickle recipe. Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com
Aaaand we’re back. Flippin’ finally! As some of you know, it’s been a rough month here at SCC… but after all the roadtrips, mountain-climbing, and hospital stays (not in that order), we are back and ready for action. We missed bad movies, and we missed every gosh damn one of you! Tom picked the movie this week, and we watched the 1990 action flick, Killing American Style- directed by the one and only Amir Shervan. Tyler stopped by to watch this one with us- making it the third Shervan film we’ve covered on the show, and the second that Tyler has joined us for. Killing American Style stars Robert Z’Dar as hardened criminal, Tony Stone, who -along with his partner, John Lynch- are on their way to prison for a failed heist. When Stone’s brother is shot in the process of helping them escape, they force their way into a nearby home and wait for help. The only problem is that the house belongs to all-American bad-ass/80s fashion victim, John Morgan. Morgan comes out strong but essentially becomes their errand boy for the entire movie, until finally he gets fed up and decides to unleash some good ol’ fashioned American whoop-ass on everyone! Hurray! We discuss the obvious parallels between this and Shervan’s other films, including his bizarre perspective on American culture. We also discuss watermelon etiquette, bizarre set “design”, and lack of a solid goon game in this flick. We’re back!
CPR's Clubhouse (Aby and Angel formerly of TKA) Episode 2 The former members of TKA, Aby and Angel join us to discuss their feud with lead singer, K7 one week after his interview. Aby and Angel break down their challenge, TKA vs TKA, Show for Show concept. Plus they talk Tony Stone and their views on the group they were part of. Hosted by CPR Jose Ortiz and Phillip Anthony
An interview with TONY STONE the director of SEVERED WAYS. In the year 1007, an expedition of Vikings arrives on the shores of the New World and travels south in search of a fabled Vinland. When their party is attacked by "Skraelings" and must flee to safety, two men who had gone ahead to explore the interior are left behind, assumed dead. Very much alive but stranded on the rocky shore, the two move north in hopes of reuniting with their countrymen. Haunted by memories and visions of the Old World, the Norsemen face the challenges of an unfamiliar landscape in very different ways. And though the terrain seems dense and deserted, they are not the only people in the woods: both Indians and Irish Monks factor in their epic adventure in the Americas. SEVERED WAYS will screen at the Laemmle Sunset 5 beginning Friday, July 17.
An interview with director Tony Stone whose film Severed Ways will have its world premier June 22, 2007 at Film Independent's Los Angeles Film Festival. Shot independently at the site of actual Viking settlements in Newfoundland, Severed Ways follows Vikings, Indians and Irish monks as they collide on the shores of North America in the name of personal glory and religious dominance in the 11th century. Two stranded Vikings wade through a primeval landscape as they struggle for survival while still in the grip of their Norse ways.
