Rob Assise is a jumps coach and mathematics teacher at Homewood Flossmoor High School (2023 Illinois State Track Champions). He is also a writer, a regular “Track Football Consortium” speaker, and a multi-time guest on this podcast. In addition to high school sports, he owns the private training business Re-Evolution Athletics. Having good reactivity in the feet carries nuance with it. Some athletes can use their feet exceptionally well for sprinting or straight-ahead pursuits. Others have foot dynamics that allow them a better conversion of horizontal energy to vertical. Ultimately, the goal is to understand why athletes use their strategies and find areas of improvement specific to the individual. On today's podcast, Rob covers ideas on intersections of sprint and jumps training in track and field, athletic asymmetry, plyometric coaching, speed and power complexes, and a nuanced discussion on the nature of foot placement in sprinting and plyometrics, on the level of both performance and injury prevention. Rob is a humble and experienced coach, and I've always loved having a chance to sit down and talk training with him. It just allowed me to kind of see things from a little bit of different perspective because on the Runway you're really not at maximum speed." (15:49) "When you do things that the brain finds interesting, your brain doesn't give a damn about volume." (32:20) “In general, when we're looking at asymmetry with a 1080 or something, like bounding, hopping, whatever, I usually just use, like, a 10% marker. So, like, if that asymmetry is greater than 10% or maybe approaching 10%, maybe we're going to tease in some things to try to get a little bit more of a balance” (42:31) “I've had sprinters who have had crazy good RSi scores. And they come over to the jumps and I'll have them, like, bound or hop, and they're going to have a contact that's more flat or rolling and they just can't do it. It looks like incredibly labored. It's like they just don't want to. They almost refuse to contact that rear part of their foot” (44:30) "Those athletes who struggle accessing that rear part of their foot, they were more prone to hamstring injuries." (48:52) “Very few people are going to hit a forefoot contact gallop” About Rob Assise Rob Assise has 20+ years of experience teaching mathematics and coaching track and field at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Today's episode features Tony Holler.  Tony is the track coach at Plainfield North High School with 39 years of coaching experience in football, basketball, and track.  He is the originator of the “Feed the Cats” training system that has not only found immense popularity in the track and field world, but the team sport coaching world as well.  Tony is the co-director of the Track Football Consortium along with Chris Korfist, and has been a two-time prior guest on the podcast.  Tony's ideas of a speed-based culture, and rank-record-publish are making large waves in the coaching world. It's been said that “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”.  In the coaching world, the desire to be “well-prepared” for one's sport can easily lead to an excessive amount of conditioning and overall training volume done too early in the season, creating ground for injuries to happen.  It's extremely easy to just “do more”.  It takes wisdom and management of one's coaching validation to start the journey of doing less. On today's show, Tony goes in detail on his evolution in his “Feed the Cats” coaching system, from the pre-2008 period where he had no electronic timing, to some of the worst workouts he had his athletes do before that critical year-2000 split where he removed things like tempo sprinting (the t-word) from his programming, and centered his program around being the best part of an athlete's day.  We'll get into how Feed the Cats is working into team sport training and “conditioning”, and then go in detail on Tony's speed-training culture built on love, joy, and recognition.  Tony will speak on the “art of surrender” in goal setting, his X-factor workouts, and much more in this conversation of almost 2 hours.  When you are speaking to someone like Tony, the two hours flies by, and you have a spring in your coaching step afterwards. Timestamps and Main Points: 3:49 – The “worst” workout that Tony administered to his sprinters before the year 2000 when “Feed the Cats” started, and Tony's thoughts on those kids who “survived” that type of training 11:38 – Thoughts on the “Feed the Cats” system as a “base” system for a college sprint program that will likely have more volume and intensive training means 18:49 – Psychological elements of Tony's program, and the counter-intuitive elements of “not training” for things like back-to-back races at the state championship meet 24:49 – What Tony did for “feed the cats” iterations before his first timing system in 2008, and what the original “feed the cats” workouts were from 2000-2007 31:41 – The idea of being more “sensitized for speed endurance” through an off-season based on feed the cats 35:50 – Joy and love as a foundational force of speed training in the “feed the cats” system 39:36 – Some other elements of Tony's early “feed the cats” days compared to now, and what he has cut out of the program 48:27 – How to use wrist bands with 20-24mph engravings to reinforce team culture and motivation 57:00 – Tony's experience of moving FTC into a team sport space, and stories from team sport coaches 1:06:50 – Thoughts on using sport itself as conditioning and essentialism in sport training and conditioning 1:23:05 – Transcending older programs, thought processes in programming, and surrendering to the results 1:31:36 – The present-mindedness of training, and what it means to train like a child 1:36:11 – If Tony's arm was twisted, would he put in one of the following: A 20' meeting prior to practice, 6-8x200m tempo, or weightlifting, in his FTC practice 1:40:15 – Some nuts and bolts to Tony's X-facto...

On episode 26 I sat down with Brad Dixon, Head coach of football at Camp Point Central High school in Illinois. Coach Dixon first shares what led him down the pathway to sprint based football, in this portion of the conversation Coach Dixon shares some of the ideas from his article They Just Want the damn Recipe. He talks about conversations that he had with coach Tony Holler and how that facilitated his realization that in order to build anything useable and substantial you must first learn how to cook for yourself. Coach Dixon highlights how through trial and error he was able to build a regimen that works best for him. This is a concept that Coach Dixon alludes to multiple times, there is not a one size fits all approach. Sprint based football takes a different approach to more traditional methods, Coach Dixon discusses how his paradigm shifted from trying to throw as much as you can in practice, to trying to facilitate and grow through the week and letting the real performance happen on Friday's beneath the lights. Coach Dixon highlights how a typical sprint based week looks at his high school, that all starts by giving the kids the weekend off to recover. Mondays start with the focus which is sprinting, with some film and board work to prep for the week. Tuesday is what Coach Dixon refers to as a fundamental day, where athletes will be in helmets going over fundamentals and game situations. Wednesday is the only day of the week where athletes will go full gear in their preparation. Thursday is a more traditional walk through as they finalize their prep for the week. Friday is game day and in Coach Dixon's lens it is a sprint day. Coach Dixon really speaks to not wasting time in practice and getting what needs to be done accomplished while leaving the needless volume and fluff on the table. The sprint based model mirrors that of feed the cats; therefore, we discuss the minimum effective dose and how he justifies the correct dosage for his team to be competitive. We discuss some of the common misconceptions based around sprint based football. Coach Dixon throws out a wonderful line of logic that toughness is task specific and that he wants athletes that are precise. We end our conversation by discussing how he facilitates speed work away from the competitive season. Coach Dixon discusses how he likes to utilize variance in his speed drill work to show athletes different mechanical issues that they need to work on. A lot of this work is built into the warm up section of a work out and can be facilitated year around to work on important running mechanics. Coach Dixon shares how his athletic enhancement PE allows for him to make the weight room a constant for not only his athletes in football but all athletes at his school. Check out the links below for some of Coach Dixon's writings at Track Football Consortium based on many of the topics discussed today. http://trackfootballconsortium.com/they-just-want-the-damn-recipe/ https://trackfootballconsortium.com/how-to-cook/ https://tfc.coachesclinic.com/speakers/brad-dixon/

On this episode I sit down with Dan Fichter of Irondequoit high School and Wannagetfast. We cover a lot of topics relating to Neurology and how to effectively utilize brain based solutions to drive effective training and aid with recovery. Our first topic is based around where he likes to start athletic development. We discuss his rationale for utilizing isometrics to help develop postural and positional awareness in his athletes and the benefits derived from that. We spend time covering how only focusing on voluntary movement misses the majority of the driver for locomotion the reflexive actions. We discuss how this pertains to speed and how the reflexive system affects speed development. Dan discusses the rationale behind Cross Crawl patterning and how to utilize it to effectively stimulate the brain and brain stem following bilateral exercise. We discuss the different variations of isometrics and the rationale behind different methods. We discuss inputting chaos into the system and allowing self organization through perturbations within training. We also spend some time talking about neuro based warm ups and Dan offers an example of how his team warms up before a game ( including freestyle, breathing in a position of power, Increasing Heart rate, bouncing, signal 6, and different methods of rolling, rocking and crawling to stimulate the vestibular and brain stem. We end the conversation by discussing different methods of recovery that he utilizes to keep his players fresh, efficient, and healthy. This is a great episode jam packed with a lot of rationale behind why you can benefit from taking the brain and reflexive system into account for athletic development. Dan list a lot of great resources that follow the same rationale such as prior guest Shawn Sherman(square1Systems) Mat Boule(IP institut) and Track Football Consortium. Our guest today is Bobby Stroupe, founder and president of Athlete Performance Enhancement Center (APEC).  Bobby has directed human performance systems for nearly 20 years.  His coaching ranges from youth athletes to some of the top names in multiple professional sports, including first round picks, as well as Super Bowl and World Series champions.  Bobby is well-known for his work in the physical preparation realm of Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the recent Superbowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. After doing 235 episodes of this podcast, and opening up my eyes to more and more of the performance space, I’m always excited to find those coaches who are spearheading creative and effective training methods in athletic performance transfer.  When I recently watched Bobby Stroupe’s presentation at the recent “Track Football Consortium” regarding his methods in working with Patrick Mahomes, I was like a kid in a candy shop, viewing training methods that replicated many time and space requirements of sport play without being mechanical or contrived. Bobby is not only a holistic and open minded coach, but he is also an incredibly thorough and detailed thinker.  There are so many points of carry-over in what Bobby does, I believe that studying his work is essential if we are to reach the point of getting our training to truly transfer to the field of play.  Bobby achieves this transfer in a way that still pays homage to traditional principles of force development and human performance, but is able to add in the tri-planar and chaotic nature of what athletes will encounter in sport. On today’s podcast, Bobby gets into a variety of his “unorthodox” training methods, including locomotion complexes, tri-planar plyometrics and strength training, complex training, long-term development, and athlete autonomy.  Again, with the interest of transfer to sport in mind, any aspiring coach should be familiar with the work of Bobby Stroupe and Team APEC. Today’s episode features speed coach and human performance expert, Chris Korfist.  Chris is a multi-time guest on the podcast and is back for a solo-interview show where he gets into his recent developments in speed training, as well as a great conversation about mind-body concepts and their relationship to sport, and even life itself. Chris Korfist has been a high school coach in track and football for almost 30 years, with more than 80 All-State athletes.  He owns the “Slow Guy Speed School” that helps develop athletes ranging from World Champion to middle school. He has consulted with professional sports teams all over the world, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, and Rugby League, and is an advisor for Auckland University of Technology’s SPRINZ.  Chris also co-owns the Track Football Consortium, and co-founded Reflexive Performance Reset. It is always good to sit down and just have a great sprinting/speed conversation, as in so many ways, speed is a universal concept to us as human beings, regardless of our exact sport or movement practice.  Sprinting represents the highest coordination demand output that the human body can do, and improvements in maximal sprint velocity are some of the hardest earned in training, but also some of the most rewarding.  Chris has been on several of my podcasts in the last few years, but we haven’t had a true “speed training” talk since our first episode together around 4 years ago. In addition to some great novel concepts on speed training covered on this show (such as asymmetrical sprint training and shin-drop methods), Chris also gets into a topic that may be more powerful and relevant for many athletes than particular speed training methods (although we want to do them all well), which is the power of the mind to impact posture, power outputs, sport skill, and attitudes of the opposing team.  If you get all of the speed training right, but get posture and confidence wrong, one’s highest potential will never be reached. Tony Holler is the boy's track coach at Plainfield North H.S. (IL). In 2018 Coach Holler's team swept the sprints - 4x100m, 4x200m, 100m, 200m - at the IHSA State Meet, setting two state records. He’s been coaching high school athletes for 38 years. Tony is the owner of “Feed the Cats,” a system for training sprinters that is being implemented throughout the United States by high school track coaches. He is also the co-owner of Track Football Consortium, a site where he not only writes on the topic of sprinting, but he’s also written articles on distance running, such as the profile of John O’Malley (episode 002), which you can read it here. In this interview we go into detail about the elements Coach Holler uses with his sprinters that he believes distance coaches should be implementing. There are some specific questions, such as how he views someone like Peter Snell doing 20-mile long runs as part of middle distance training. He’s got a great answer to that question. Tony and I discuss what needs to be done to improve track and field in the United States - a subject that may well deserve a follow-up episode. Thank you, Tony, for your time and energy. You can find Coach Holler on Twitter at @pntrack

Today’s episode features Rob Assise, track and field coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the greater Chicago area.  Rob has been an accomplished writer in the last year, and has been a highly successful coach on the track and field level. His progressive workouts have netted him great success, as Homewood-Flossmoor has been a force on the state track and field level in Illinois.   Specifically for Just Fly Sports, Rob has written “10 Low-Hanging Fruits to Grab for Optimal Performance”.  He has also been a speaker for one of the mecca’s of track and field training, the Track-Football Consortium, and will be speaking at the next iteration this June.   Like Tony Holler, Rob has gone from a more volume oriented approach that he trained under, to a more progressive, low volume approach that more and more track coaches are utilizing, not only to help athletes to new personal bests, but also to make track and field more fun and engaging for the athlete.   To me, it is both Rob’s knowledge and creativity that make him someone I love to sit down and talk training with. One of the biggest game changers for me that Rob mentioned was doing curvilinear sprints for his track and field jumpers, which is just the tip of the iceberg in the many cutting edge methods he employs with his athletes.   On today’s podcast, Rob talks about his background, training philosophy, speed and plyometric methods, weightroom concepts, the “constraint based” jump training system (a real gem) and more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more.   Key Points: Rob's background as an athlete and in track and field coaching Rob’s coaching philosophy and how it has transformed over the years Nuts and bolts of Rob’s training phases and managing lots of sprinters in a group with athletes of different abilities, as well as how to do a flying 10 workout with 60 kids and one set of timing gates Peaking plans going into championship meets Rob’s ideas on the perfect world of yearly training throughout multiple sport play in a high school setting Rob’s plyometric utilization for his jumpers Weightroom concepts for Rob’s athletes A “constraints based” approach to jumps training Quotes: “I really had to sell workouts to athletes (doing high volume sprint training).. only half of the athletes would be really engaged.  I was looking for ways to get everybody engaged” “When it comes to peaking, it’s all about “what makes you feel awesome”” “Every week I try to do something in the frontal plane that is ankle based (for high jumpers)” “My long and triple jumpers will do plyometrics on a curve” “If you just focus on the sagittal plane, that’s ok, but if we can incorporate the transverse and frontal plane as well that creates a more stable athlete” “I like doing resisted sprint work where the arms are free, that is the ideal” “Speed drllls are overblown… we do them, but if you’re doing more than 15 or 20 minutes of it in a warmup, you are better off using your time somewhere else” About Rob Assise Rob Assise is a mathematics teacher and track coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He also has experience coaching football and cross country. He can be reached via e-mail at robertassise@gmail.com or Twitter @HFJumps.

Today’s guest is Tony Holler, Head track coach at Plainfield North High School, Illinois and Co-founder of the Track-Football Consortium in the Chicago area. I’ve known Tony for about 3 years now after meeting for him the first time at the original “Track-Football Consortium”.   Listening to Tony talk about team culture and building sprinters was one of the most memorable aspects of my experiences there, and really keyed me into a different mentality when it came to track practice. Tony has had great success at Plainfield North, including this last year where freshman Marcellus Moore ran 10.40 at the Illinois state track meet, one of the best freshman performances in high school track history.  He is also a chemistry teacher, and has many years of football coaching experience in his belt.  Tony has written some amazing articles over the years on Simplifaster, and formerly, FreelapUSA, on sprint culture, training, and coaching. Tony knows how to make track fun.  When most people think of track, they think of intense speed-endurance and tempo workouts, throwing up after practice, and shin-splints.  Tony’s practices look nothing like this, and they are the antithesis of the long-slow running model, and he gets great results.  His model towards speed training co-incides heavily with former podcast guest Jeff Moyer’s attitude towards training athletes, as we have spoken at length about in the form of strength training. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: A recap of Tony’s last track season and what he learned from Marcellus Moore, the #1 freshman in the United States Tony’s sprint philosophy and its evolution over the years Setting up lactate training throughout the competitive season Approaches to rest and short practices for high school track and field The rationale and idea behind “X-Factor” plyometric and agility workouts Ideas on recording and publishing athletes sprint times Fluctuations in the “mode” of speed training throughout a high-school year Peaking considerations in a “low dose” training system Quotes “Whatever it is that makes people fast, I think (Marcellus’s) feet might be the most important thing” “I’ve always told kids to run fast and loose, and make it look easy, and I’ve quit saying that to Marcellus, because there is nothing loose or easy about the way that he runs” “You don’t change things just because it’s not your stereotypical look (in athletes)” “I started writing down the (40 yard dash) times, ranking them, and putting them up on a bulletin board, which became the most popular bulletin board in the high school” “We never do a lactate workout until the season starts” “In a period of 19 weeks, there is 27 lactate workouts (including meets counting as lactate workouts)” “47.99 wasn’t bad for a junior, there was nothing wrong with him dying a little bit late in the race” “I don’t even know what a tempo workout is!  We don’t say the words tempo, fitness, conditioning in our program” “To me, track and field is all about performance, it’s not about keeping kids until 5pm” “We never practice more than 40 minutes” “There’s no way to say “get your knees up” to a guy running at 10 meters per second” “The record, rank and publish is critical to what we do” About Tony Holler Tony Holler is a teacher and coach at Plainfield North High School. Holler has 35 years experience coaching football, basketball, and track. Holler is a member of Illinois Track & Field Hall of Fame and Co-director of Football-Track Activation Consortium along with Chris Korfist.

Today’s guests are the team at Elite Level Performance in Colliersville, TN, owner John Nelson and trainer/natural health practitioner, Mandy Macri.  I originally met John at the first Track/Football Consortium in Lombard, Ill, and have since had some great conversations with him on holistic health, Be Activated/RPR, Jay Schroeder training ideas, and more. John Nelson brings over a decade of experience and expertise to all clients. He has a Masters Degree in Health & Sport Science, and is also a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist & Personal Trainer. Mandy Macri joined Elite Level Performance in 2012 after 20 years in the health & fitness industry. Mandy has a degree in Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech, and is a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist.  Mandy has her Natural Health Practitioner Certification from Trinity School of Natural Health, and is currently completing her dissertation to receive her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Trinity School and Natural Health. One of the most interesting things that piqued my interest in what John, and Mandy were doing at ELP was John talking about the relationship of muscle testing to the holistic (nutritional, psychological) aspects of the athlete in getting longer lasting results of muscle activation and strength in things like hip extension, flexion, etc.  Much of the muscle testing and related corrective systems we see today will deliver fairly temporary changes.  The modalities and total integrative approach at ELP really sets what John and Mandy are doing apart, and as we learn more about the connections of the human body, we can become more effective coaches and athletes.  Today’s episode is all about the relationship between nutrition to athletic function, with many facets of both also discussed individually. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: John and Mandy’s backgrounds, and the formation of Elite Level Performance Physical, neurological and nutritional assessments of athletes at ELP Critical physical assessments for athletes in the ankle and hip A summary of the RBTI (Reams Biological Theory of Ionization) in performance assessment Common physical deficiencies in athletes John and Mandi work with Aspects of digestion in physical performance John’s training philosophy Quotes “A commonality I tend to find is basically an overload of the system in too much sugar, too many electrolytes, and an inability to process out those proteins” “If your body cannot send and receive information the right way, it is going to start to compensate” “Our kids know that Gatorade is not the best choice” “PH is how fast things are moving through your digestive tract” “I think just getting the physical component is a cop-out when you are not addressing the true origin of the (muscle weakness) situation” “Protein is extremely important, but is also the hardest thing for your body to break down.”  “Just because you chew, swallow and something comes out the other end doesn’t mean all was good, and with protein especially” “A simple enzyme deficiency might be the only thing standing in your way between making the gains you want and staying where you are” “Most of the standard American diet is going to push you too acidic, or too fast, pushing things through the system too fast for good absorption.” “If a person is chronically not activated in their psoas or glutes, then there is something internally going wrong” Show Notes A simple book recommended to be post-recording by Mandy was “Kick Your Fat in the Nuts”, which goes into aspects of digestion that was discussed in the show.  It is a very interesting and eye opening read.
