Today at GIR, we sit down to discuss going barefoot for life.  I mean we're born barefoot and probably ran around as children without shoes, so why aren't we doing it now as adults.  We discuss what the literature says as to the potential athletic and health benefits when training barefoot.  We also, talk about the different brands we have tried over the years, and which ones we have come to like best.  So don't be a shrewd, instead jump out of those narrow pointy heels you're wearing and join us in this talk about experiencing the freedom you get when you feel the earth under your feet.     To donate and become a Show Patreon Member click here https://www.patreon.com/GetItRa  Watch on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdwttRw4sudrGN6u3Gf1Myw/videos  Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Get-It-RA-363158217990024  Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/GetItRA_Podcast

Nick Gomez (@coachnick44) is a strength & conditioning coach currently living in Austin, Texas and a coach at Onnit Gym ATX. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Nick has worked with some of the most successful fighters in MMA, and trained high level athletes from all sports.Avid listeners will recall I visited Onnit in the summer of 2021 (Ep 27), and Nick was the first person I met there. We got along so well and had some great chats those days and finally got around to recording a podcast. Functional training is a word far too often tossed around with no rhyme or reason. Doing stuff that's weird doesn't make it functional. Performing impressive lifts or feats of athleticism isn't functional. SPOILER: doing burpees is not functional. However, there are a whole lot of ways we can train for the functional challenges that life may throw at us, and we covered that throughout the discussion. We spoke a lot about the way that athletes train, and how it's sometimes misguided. Athletes should train to be good at their sport, not good at lifting weights – unless of course, lifting weights is their sport. Many youth athletes fall into this trap, and the thought process around the role that strength training plays in athletic development needs to evolve. Along these lines, we spoke about several prolific athletes. One of which is Jon Jones, arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time. We discussed the qualities that are present in an athlete like Jon, both in and outside the gym, that make them so great at their sport. Nick and I are also both huge proponents of barefoot training and we both spoke about our experiences with letting your feet work like feet. If there's one thing you take from this podcast, it should be to spend more time barefoot! In today's episode, Michele and Dan discuss barefoot exercise and the role of barefoot training for multiple goals and populations (endurance athletes, strength athletes, etc). The two then discuss the role of the foot and ankle in overall functional movement, the importance in corrective exercise and the impact dysfunction at this region can have up the kinetic chain, in addition to the best interventions to correct this (such as the short foot exercise).  Michele G Rogers, MA, NFPT-CPT has been a fitness professional for over 18 years, a barefoot training specialist for nine years, and the blog editor for the National Federation of Professional Trainers for three years. A master's degree in Health Psychology prepared her to tackle motivation issues surrounding health behaviors. Fitness became her first love and only sport from age 4, inspired by Jane Fonda's videos. She bought her first set of dumbbells at age 12 and started hitting the gym at 16. A chronic back pain sufferer for decades further aggravated after becoming a mom of two, prompts her training approach to emphasize corrective exercise and progressive programming. Her professional mission has been to raise body awareness and improve muscle imbalances to help clients reduce pain. Michele and her family are settled in the suburbs of Richmond, VA. When not "fitnessing", she enjoys gardening and appreciating wine. @michele_g_rogers_fitness on IG. After a much too long break from the last episode, I'm back with a jammed show.  2021 is here and hopefully, we see some OCRs get going more and more.   In this episode, I share my strategy for planning out my 2021 race season. If you need help laying it out, make sure you check out the Venga CBD's training calendar. Do you use HIIT for your OCR training?  Most miss the mark when they are using intervals.   I discuss the point behind why you should use interval training and where so many go wrong. In my research review, I share really interesting research on a jumping test that can predict your running speed.  If you want to make the most out of your training to improve your running speed, you will want to listen to this one. And finally, I interview Dr. Brianne Showman from Get Your Fix Physical Therapy.  Brianne has a unique background as a therapist and a performance coach, so I was excited to get her on.  We discussed some of the common areas that OCR athletes go wrong leading to an increased risk of injuries.  I particularly enjoyed the topic of racing versus training and how these should look different.  Brianne also shared some of her insight on barefoot training explaining how and how not to incorporate it.    Full show notes at www.ocrunderground.com/episode-76

Dr. Emily Splichal – human movement specialist and podiatrist – takes a close look at foot health and barefoot training for longevity and performance.  The controversy comes in when discussing the risk-reward of wearing shoes and orthotics.   Some research suggests that, over time, shoes will block sensory information from getting to our feet, making them weaker over time – hence the anti-shoe argument.  It has also been suggested that orthotics will do the same – and therefore a foot strengthening program is crucial to get feet strong and out of the added support.  In certain cases, strength training will not fix the issue and orthotics are inevitable long term. In many cases, orthotics could be just a temporary fix – if a proper strength program is followed and maintained.

Research demonstrates that the anti-aging market is growing at a compound rate of 7.8% between 2013-2019 and a total market value above $281 billion. Whether it be fasting, bouillon, supplements, cold showers, or many of the other lifestyle and dietary changes now known to improve the functioning of your body, the anti aging market is becoming ever more popular as people continue to seek ways to improve their health. Our guest on today's podcast is passionate about anti aging medicine but believes a key focus of anti aging medicine should be focussed on movement longevity. ‘You want your brain young, you want your skin young, you want to think young, but you also want to move young and a linchpin of movement longevity is keeping your feet strong and keeping your feet connected to your core’. In her book Barefoot Strong: Unlock the Secrets to Movement Longevity Dr Splichal explores the science behind barefoot training and this growing area of health and fitness is the secret to youthful movement.Dr Splichal is a podiatrist, human movement specialist and global leader in barefoot science rehabilitation. She’s the founder of the Evidence Based Fitness Academy, creator of the Barefoot Training Specialist, Barefoot Rx, & Bare Workout certifications and inventor of Naboso technology. With over 16 years in the fitness industry, Dr Splichal has dedicated her medical career towards studying postural alignment and human movement as it relates to barefoot science, foot to core integration and from the ground up training. In this episode Dr Splichal and I discuss movement from the ground up. We dig into the growing barefoot movement, discuss the different foot types such as flat feet, and identify how foot health can influence back pain. From barefoot activation exercises and barefoot shoes to nutritional advice to support the protection of peripheral nerves this episode will give you insights, and actions, to improve foot health and enhance your movement longevity. Some of the things you’ll discover… How the approach to medicine is shifting with a focus on preventative care & empower patients to help themselves You can’t rely on orthotics for foot health, you need to take an active approach to recovery & ensure the deep core muscles are engaged, whilst connected with the feet What are the different foot types and subclasses of those foot types and how can they impact the body How practitioners should be working in collaboration where necessary to help resolve your pain/injury There are both biomechanical, and sensory, considerations that must be made in relation to the feet and their influence on back pain A strong foot, or a strong core, in isolation does not offer any functional benefit, there has to be a connection between the two Shoes create a disconnect between nervous system and the ground so keeping sensory stimulation of the feet a part of your daily routine to offset some of the disconnect that happens from modern day shoes For more episodes of the Back Pain Solutions podcast visit: www.smartstrong.co.uk Don’t forget to subscribe so you can receive updates on new episodes and direct links to additional content. If you’re suffering from back pain, want to improve your posture, or want to build resilience to future injury then you’re in the right place.
