Many of us grow up in homes with high expectations, but perhaps not the burden of expectation that Ben Mankiewicz experienced.  His grandfather and great uncle were prominent in Hollywood, his father in the world of politics.  Ben long ago dreamed of being a baseball broadcaster.  Along the way, he worked in sports media, hosted an eclectic news broadcast in Miami and eventually moved to California where he went on scores of auditions and batted .000.  But much like in his beloved baseball, it only takes one.  At the audition for Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in 2003, Mankiewicz hit it out of the park.  More than 20 years later, generations of classic movie fans are glad he did. I hope you enjoy the latest episode of “Before The Cheering Started with Budd Mishkin.” If you like the episode, please rate and review it on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.  And please share it on social media and by old fashioned word of mouth.

In a nod to Turner Classic Movies (TCM)'s "Silent Sunday Nights," hosted by Academy Museum Director and President Jacqueline Stewart, the museum is launching a series of silent film screenings. Both TCM and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are dedicated to showcasing the films of this important period in filmmaking history as part of our cultural heritage. Film historian David Pierce has concluded that only 26% of American silent features survive in complete form. Taking place on Sundays at 2 pm, and screening at the world renown David Geffen Theatre, Silent Sundays will showcase iconic movies from the silent era as well as forgotten gems and international classics. Each screening will also feature live musical accompaniment. The opening film on July 23 is Earth (Zemlya) by director Oleksandr Dovzhenko. It is the first screening of the Earth (Zemlya)  outside of Europe and accompanied by a live musical performance from Kyiv-based composer Luke Corradine. K.J. Relth-Miller, Interim Director of Film Programs at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures joins us for a conversation what went into selecting the first slate of silent film era classics, the thrill of watchinmg great films with live musical, and how many of the filmmakers from the silent era went on to become cinematic icons; Keaton, Chaplin, Hitchcock, Lang, Lubitsch, DeMille and Hawks. As primetime host and anchor of Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Robert Osborne brought viewers out of their living rooms and into the world of classic Hollywood , providing insider information, facts and trivia on TCM movie presentations. Osborne was also a columnist-critic for The Hollywood Reporter, the daily show business trade paper. He was known as the official biographer of Oscar®, thanks to a series of books he wrote on the subject of Hollywood 's annual Academy Awards®. His book, 80 Years Of the Oscar, written at the request of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has been called “the most comprehensive and definitive book ever done on the subject.” Osborne was born in Colfax, Wash., and graduated from the University of Washington 's School of Journalism, appearing in local plays in his non-study hours. He eventually went to Hollywood as an actor under contract to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It was Lucy who encouraged him to pursue writing, which he considered “the best advice at the best time” he had ever been given. Lucy remained a friend and mentor to him until her death. Osborne joined the staff of The Hollywood Reporter in 1977 and six years later began writing the paper's influential “Rambling Reporter” column, which covers all aspects of the movie and television business. In 1982, he also began as the on-air entertainment reporter for the nightly news on Los Angeles ' KTTV. In 1987, he was signed by CBS to make daily appearances on the CBS Morning Program, and from 1986-1993, he was also a regular host of The Movie Channel cable network. From 1981-83, Osborne served as president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA). He was a frequent guest on Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning America and other network shows; was twice a Cable ACE nominee for his “Osborne Report” segments for The Movie Channel; and was nominated for an Emmy® as Best Host Moderator. Osborne was also the winner of the 1984 Press Award from the Publicists Guild of America. On Feb. 1, 2006, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in January 2008, he received a special award from the National Board of Review for his contributions as a film historian. In addition to his hosting duties for TCM, Osborne has also done several specials for the network, including Private Screenings, an hour-long interview series with such Hollywood luminaries as Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall, Angela Lansbury, James Garner, Jane Fonda, Sidney Lumet, Norman Jewison, and Tony Curtis. He also hosted TCM's Guest Programmer series, in which he has been joined in introducing movie line-ups by an eclectic mix, including David Mamet, Alec Baldwin, Mia Farrow, Martha Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Ford, Liz Smith, Bill Cosby, Donald Trump, James Elroy, Evander Holyfield, Danny DeVito, Renee Feming, Gore Vidal and Kermit the Frog. Aaron Lowe from Incredible Two-headed Podcast joins me in talking about the silent classic, celebrating its 99th birthday, Sherlock Jr. (1924), directed by Buster Keaton. Nevertheless, at just 44 minutes, the film delivers with its dream setting, lending to a unique American cinematic surrealism that works really well with the film's gags. An award-winning host, interviewer, and entertainment expert, Karger began guest hosting on TCM in 2016 and was named an official host in 2018. He has made more than 200 live appearances on NBC's Today show and also serves as a Special Correspondent for IMDb. In 2018 he co-hosted ABC's Live from the Red Carpet on Oscar night. In 2015, Karger received the Publicists Guild Press Award honoring the year's outstanding entertainment journalist. In 2014, he was named one of OUT Magazine's “OUT 100,” acknowledging the most influential people in the LGBT community.   From 2012 to 2016, he served as Chief Correspondent at Fandango, creating and hosting the original video series “The Frontrunners,” which received a 2013 Webby Award nomination for Best Variety Series. Before that, Karger spent 17 years as a senior writer at Entertainment Weekly, where he wrote more than 50 cover stories on subjects including George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington and Carrie Underwood. In 2012 and 2013, he was the Academy's official red-carpet greeter on Oscar night and only the third person ever to hold that post. Dave graduated cum laude from Duke University. I sat down with Karger to talk about 31 Days of Oscar, the look of this year's race, the changes in the Academy over time and his own Oscar origin story.

Turner Classic Movies can be a great place to experience film history. But don't leave your kids alone to watch the 1943 TV-G Caped Crusader live action show, the Bat Cave where they'll be treated to statements glorifying the internment of Japanese citizens or as they call them, "sl@nty-eyed j@ps" (No I am not kidding nor mistaken). And don't forget General Spanky, (also rated T V-G), where a young Buckwheat scours the docks of a Southern port in the pre-Civil War South asking every white person he meets, "Are you my master?" There are films where white people show up (for no reason at all) in blackface acting out offensive stereotypes and there are no trigger warnings for any of it. We know TCM can address these issues because Eddie Muller consistently does in their Noir Alley segment. So why doesn't TCM have a cohesive rating system that takes into consideration the deleterious effects that these unanticipated racially charged landmines might have on its viewers? Dr. Richard Edwards is the director of the Exploration Center for innovative Teaching & Engagement (XCITE) at UC Riverside. In Dr. Edwards' previous role, he served as the executive director of strategic learning at Ball State. In this role, Melissa oversees the day-to-day operations of the club’s marketing, Hawks Studios, live experience and production, brand merchandising, creative services, corporate social responsibility, brand communications and basketball development teams. She also works closely with executive leadership to provide strategy for the organization. Beginning her career with the Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Melissa served in brand development and strategy positions for Turner Entertainment Networks (including TNT, TBS, Turner Classic Movies (TCM), truTV and Peachtree TV), Cartoon Network and Turner Media Group. Additionally, she helped to create the first Corporate Social Responsibility division in Turner’s UK office. Part of the NBA since high school, Melissa was the first “team attendant”/ ball girl for the Miami Heat organization, and in later years, returned to work for the Heat in the basketball operations division. Miguel Rodriquez of Monster Island Resort  and Will McKinley of Cinematically Insane interview Clute and Edwards on the topic of TCM Presents Into the Darkness: Investigating Film Noir, a free multimedia online course presented by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Ball State University.  This course is the latest collaboration by the creators of the Out of the Past: Investigating Film Noir podcast series and will benefit from the promotional and social media support of TCM, where Clute now serves as head of Marketing and Editorial, and the innovative multimedia course materials created by Ball State University, where Edwards is Executive Director of iLearn Research.  The course is free and open to the public, will run in conjunction with the two-month “Summer of Darkness” festival on TCM, featuring 24 hours of film noir every Friday in June and July, 2015.

Movie Addict HQ celebrates the 75th Anniversary of Gone with the Wind, one of the most successful films of all time. Film historian James Colt Harrison and Classic Film Guide founder Diana Saenger plan to join the festivities. Plus, Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne has been invited to call in. Listeners will also hear a clip from Cammie King Conlon's interview about playing Rhett and Scarlett's doomed daughter, Bonnie Blue Butler.  Gone with the Wind, released in 1939, received 10 Oscars. It has been screened millions of times throughout the world. Fans of this beloved epic continue to celebrate the movie at various GWTW conventions. To honor this important anniversary, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has teamed up with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Fathom Events and The Harry Ransom Center for a multi-tiered celebration that includes a new Blu-ray release, screenings at over 600 theaters, an exhibit and new book on the making of the film, and a special screening of the movie on Turner Classic Movies. These activities are scheduled for the last part of September and early October. The late Cammie King Conlon, author of Bonnie Blue Butler: A Gone with the Wind Memoir, visited Movie Addict HQ four years ago to discuss her delightful book, which is filled with fascinating inside information concerning what happened on and off the set, including what it was like to work with Clark Gable and director Victor Fleming. Movie fans should enjoy hearing about these experiences in the clip from her terrific interview.
