The Unitarian religious tradition was a product of the same eighteenth-century democratic ideals that fueled the American Revolution and informed the founding of the United States. Its liberal humanistic principles influenced institutions such as Harvard University and philosophical movements like Transcendentalism. Yet, its role in the history of American architecture is little known and studied. In American Unitarian Churches: Architecture of a Democratic Religion (U Massachusetts Press, 2021), Ann Marie Borys argues that the progressive values and identity of the Unitarian religion are intimately intertwined with ideals of American democracy and visibly expressed in the architecture of its churches. Over time, church architecture has continued to evolve in response to developments within the faith, and many contemporary projects are built to serve religious, practical, and civic functions simultaneously. Focusing primarily on churches of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple and Louis Kahn's First Unitarian Church, Borys explores building histories, biographies of leaders, and broader sociohistorical contexts. As this essential study makes clear, to examine Unitarianism through its churches is to see American architecture anew, and to find an authentic architectural expression of American democratic identity. Bryan Toepfer, AIA, NCARB, CAPM is the Principal Architect for TOEPFER Architecture, PLLC, an Architecture firm specializing in Residential Architecture and Virtual Reality. Fifty years ago, the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV with one of the most dominant teams in pro football history. Author Michael MacCambridge captured the remarkable season and what it meant to Kansas City in his new book “69 Chiefs: A Team, a Season and the Birth of Modern Kansas City.” On Oct. 27, the day the Chiefs met the Green Bay Packers at Arrowhead, MacCambridge participated in a Rainy Day Books author event at Unity Temple on the Plaza with NFL Hall of Famers Willie Lanier and Jan Stenerud. The moderator was The Star’s Vahe Gregorian. The panel spoke the closeness of that team, how it withstood the absence of quarterback Len Dawson for six games and what it was like to participate in the greatest victory in team history. Said MacCambridge: “I just thought the 69 Chiefs was a great story of an athletic triumph, a great cultural story and I know this was the last chance to tell it.” Hear the discussion on SportsBeat KC, The Star’s daily sports podcast presented by Big O Tires. This Easter sermon was delivered by Minister of Faith Development Rev. Emily Gage on April 21, 2019. Rev. Gage shares, "We are exploring the theme of Wholeness this April at Unity Temple. As I consider the Easter story with this lens—the whole of the Easter story--not just the Sunday morning rising up part, but that which precedes it—it reminds me to honor and celebrate all of who we are. All of it. The challenges, the achievements, the mistakes, the forgiveness, the imperfections, and the joy and the love.We screw up all the time. But there is always another chance to change and grow and learn." The theme for April is what it means to be a people of wholeness. To read about our theme-based ministry, please visit http://www.unitytemple.org/faith-development/soul-connections
