This week, Sam and Ian return to prison, well, the prison drama. We've discussed prison films before with a Vault review of 1974's The Longest Yard and its remake, but this week is a bit harder. The Shawshank Redemption, Escape from Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Chicago, and Dead Man Walking have all shaped our outsider perspective on the inside. But the harsh reality is more than Rita Hayworth posters, daring escapes, Shakespearian plays, lavish musical fantasies, and gridiron football. It's gritty, brutal, and unrelenting. And what better way to capture that than with contraband cellphone video from the prisoners themselves? It's Wasteman directed by Cal McMow.
In a way, Sam Johnson's Instagram biography sums up his journey in sport – ‘from wasteman to ironman'. Because Sam's journey in sport is one of the most unique that we've ever told on the podcast. Struggling with his sexuality, it took a conversation with his mother during the pandemic for Sam to realise that something in his life needed to change. And from small footsteps – literally – Sam changed his life, going from a lad who didn't care about sport in the slightest to becoming an elite-level ironman triathlete who has represented Britain on the global stage at the World Ironman Championships. Sam reached out to us to share his story on the podcast, not just to inspire others who may be struggling with their sexuality – but to support anyone who has been told that they can't accomplish anything or feel like giving up. In this chat, we talk about Sam's journey to sport, how his lowest moment helped to give him the purpose that now drives his life, finding his way in elite level sport, his most memorable moments and so much more besides. This is not only a conversation that you need to hear – but it's one that has properly inspired us as well – and we're so grateful to Sam for joining us for it.
The guys do their time with Steve's Required Viewing pick, the bracing and intense prison drama/crime thriller Wasteman. Then war is upon us as House of the Dragon sweeps in from above and roasts us alive with its long-awaited third season premiere episode. After that, it's a round of “what the hell else did you watch,” including John's non-spoiler-y thoughts on Craig Gillespie's Supergirl.
Today we welcome Cinematographer Lorenzo Levrini who joins us to talk about their work on Wastman. Lorenzo will talk us through the creative decisions made to create the look of the film. Moodfellas 100! The crew is back together!Honderd keer Moodfellas. Honderd keer films, meningen, gelach, chaos, liefde voor cinema en af en toe een microfoon die nét niet deed wat 'ie moest doen. En dat vieren we groots, want Sebas schuift weer aan. De crew is back together!

The Interviews returns this week, folks, with a bumper-sized edition of chatty goodness. First, Chris talks to David Jonsson and Tom Blyth, the stars of hard-hitting prison drama, Wasteman, about the impact of their movie, and wild auditions. Then, Chris has a right giggle with Asim Chaudhry, who is one of the potential saviours of the world recruited by Sam Rockwell in Gore Verbinski's Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die. And, finally, Chris has an audience with a genuinely legendary film critic, the great Leonard Maltin, who tells Chris all about his new book, Every Movie Is A Miracle, meeting Buster Keaton, and starring in Gremlins 2. Three cracking interviews about three wildly different subjects. Every movie podcast is a miracle. Enjoy.
Want to know the story of how Chris Hewitt almost stepped on Florence Pugh's dress? Well, this isn't the podcast for you, as it features Chris and Helen O'Hara trying to tell that tale, from the press night of Cynthia Erivo's Dracula (sorry, Draclier), only to get sidetracked by a dozen different things and forget to finish it. But if you want to hear Chris, Helen, James Dyer, and John Nugent talk about movie characters falling from great heights, pay tribute to the great Robert Duvall, discuss the latest The Mandalorian And Grogu trailer, and review The Secret Agent, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, Wasteman and If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, this is the podcast for you. Oh, and Chris and Helen launch new careers as theatre reviewers too. Guest-wise, Harry Stainer talks to the Oscar-nominated star of the Brazilian thriller, The Secret Agent, one Wagner Moura, and his director, Kleber Mendonça Filho. It's a cracking episode, even if we're still nowhere nearer to finding a nickname for Tin Jim. Enjoy.

Amanda Seyfried is our special guest this week. She's starred in Mean Girls, The Housemaid and Mamma Mia!, but she's never been a Mancunian... until now. She joins Simon alongside writer-director Mona Fastvold to talk about The Testament of Ann Lee, in which Seyfried stars as the titular leader of the Shakers. You might not have heard of her and the 18th century radical religious sect she founded—and we promise you've definitely never seen a musical about her. Seyfried talks about her struggle to crack a Manchester accent for the role, never mind all that ecstatic song and dance—and we hear from Fastvold about he old-school filmmaking techniques that helped her and co-writer husband Brady Corbet bring this unique story to the screen on shoestring budget. Mark will review The Testament of Ann Lee next week, but we've got four more movie reviews for you in the meantime—it's a packed show! First, The Secret Agent, where paranoia and deception collide as an ex-academic gets caught up in South American political turmoil. Then there's If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, a darkly comic tale of maternal burnout pushed to surreal extremes. We also have Wasteman—a gritty prison drama starring Rye Lane's David Jonsson. And finally, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, a genre-bending evil-tech adventure starring Sam Rockwell. We're diving into the claustrophobic and intense world of Wasteman, the debut feature from director Calum Macdiarmid. David Jonsson (who you'll recognise from Alien: Romulus) delivers a stunning, restrained performance as Taylor, a man desperately trying to keep his head down and secure his parole. But when his new cellmate, the volatile Dee (Tom Blyth), drags him into a vicious prison power struggle, Taylor's future is thrown into jeopardy. It's 90 minutes of pure, high-stakes tension that'll leave you breathless.Fun Flix Fact: To keep things authentic, the film was shot at Shepton Mallet Prison in Somerset. It's the oldest operating prison in the UK (dating back to 1610!) before it closed in 2013. The cast and crew reportedly felt the "heavy" atmosphere of the real-life cells during filming, which definitely translates to the screen! To tie into our prison theme, we're looking back 10 years at Ava DuVernay's masterpiece, 13th. This powerhouse documentary explores the history of racial inequality and the "prison-industrial complex" in the United States. A decade later, its message remains as piercing and urgent as ever.Fun Flix Fact: Talk about making history—13th was the first-ever documentary to open the New York Film Festival! It was produced in total secrecy, and the film world only found out it even existed when the festival programme was announced. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. The gang is mostly here to discuss the #TFClive loss to Cincinnati, shout about Insigne, look ahead to FC Charlotte and NYRB, talk some #CanMNT and #CanWNT, look at the final week of the #CanPL and the usual malarkey. In this episode, Duncan is getting the oven ready (not a euphemism), Mark wants a segment of supporters to seek help and Kristin made a noise and it had to be kept.
Sam goes in on the Lorenzo Insigne stadium incident in Toronto, the Napoli social media team vs. Victor Osimhen, Mario Balotelli, troubling new podcast regulation in Canada, and tons more. Hosts Mike Newell and Jeffrey P. Nesker (No Mikey Singh, he's on vacay) are back for another (slightly less depressing) edition of Toronto Til I Die! They share their thoughts on (another, though slightly less) dreadful week for Toronto FC, after the Reds were beaten by FC Cincinnati in a close(?) game, and saw the runway regular season points leaders awarded the MLS Supporters Shield in their own barn. And then, they'll get into some "Wasteman" truthing as a prelude to an illustrious new career selling off-license TFC T-shirts. Finally, this week's Burning Question presented by NextDoor Canada: Are you renewing your season tickets? Don't miss out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On today's episode I put on my UK accent and talk about Top Boy for 3 hours. But seriously, Top Boy is better than everything else. We discuss J. Prince's call for a Grammy boycott and concert, transgender athletes in high level sports, the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court and why her husband matters to me, manifestation masturbation, men and women being less masculine/feminine than previous generations, financial responsibility, upward mobility, male/female behavior models and more. Today's episode is sponsored by Deez Nuts. Enjoy.
