When You Don't See - Part 1 (Nate Edmondson) by Highlands Community Church
Everybody, no matter what box we check or refuse to check on the census, sees life most easily from our own perspective while knowing there are many, many others. How do we write books that reflect the world we live in and all the people we live among—without claiming to speak about experiences we have not and cannot have?In our new summer series, The Working Bookshelf, KJ and guest host Jennie Nash pull their favorite writing books off the shelf and debate: which is better and why—until invariably, they get distracted and just start talking about the topic at hand. Funny, fresh and full of frank advice, when KJ and Jennie get going they’re hard to stop. There’s no competition this week, because the books we found on this topic are all helpful, whether you’re a white writer working toward change or a writer who identifies in another way, ready to point your colleagues towards some books that will help them evolve—or a writer who fits into any category (that’s all of us) who wants to be sure her characters who don’t fit that same mold ring true. Because you can’t only write books about yourself. Or maybe you can, but those are called memoir—and you still better be able to see other POVs.This week’s books:The Anti Racist Writing WorkshopCraft in the Real WorldWriting the OtherIn a new twist, you can also watch these episodes on YouTube. You CAN write a book without a plot (check out Anne Tyler’s Redhead By the Side of the Road if you doubt me, I swear to you that the most plotty thing that happens in it is the protagonist making a sandwich and yet you still want to keep reading). But if you’re not Anne Tyler (and I’m not), you ‘re going to need a nice plot arc to keep your pages turning—but not at the expense of your character’s emotional journey. How to get to both? How about a little help from a nice book? Episode 43: When You Don't BelongWe learn at a young age society can often be cruel and mean spirited, but what happens when such treatment is coming from your own family? New York City of native Puerto Rican heritage, Chef Manny Fresh, opens up about the trauma of being told by many of his own family members "You're Not One Of Us". Learn how Chef Manny's clear ability to communicate both in Spanish and English plus his lighter skin tone all made him a target for being marginalized. Where did Chef Manny go to feel a sense of belonging? How has the trauma of not being accepted at such a young age affect Chef Manny as he's grown into a Man? How have his past experiences affected his own children? This is an eye opening and often not publicly discussed conversation that will no doubt sound familiar; especially to those who have unfortunately had to endure similar experiences. *You can Subscribe to Tell Us The Truth on all leading podcast apps including the iHeart Radio App, Spreaker and iTunes/Apple Podcasts. When book coaching clients tell me that they don’t have enough time to write, my answer is simple: What if that is okay? Let’s get real. On the face of things, we all know we are lying to ourselves a little bit when we say we don’t have enough time. Because time is the only... The reason a dog will seem so obsessed with something that you can’t get their attention or do not seem motivated comes down to their emotional state. The good news is that you can help get your dog into the zone for peak performance, and when you rehearse success, it becomes easier and easier. In the episode you'll hear: • What Yerkes–Dodson Law means for dog training. • How emotional states go up and down based on stress. • Why not all stress is bad and why we need good stress. • About our emotional state and how the same applies to our dogs. • All the stages of arousal and how each state impacts our dog. • How focus narrows when stress goes up. • What over excitement does to us and our dogs. • Why dogs can’t hear us when they are over excited. • What we can do to help our dogs be in the zone. • How you can test your dog’s arousal state with a treat. • The importance of changing our dog’s physiology. • Why the bell curve changes for dogs with clarity through training. • How to train activities that help your dog get to peak performance. • Why not to train something important when your dog is over or under aroused. Stories. Our life stories. The good, the bad, and the ugly parts. We likely are just fine with others knowing the good parts of our story. Often, though, we try hard to hide or even wish away the bad and the ugly parts. My guest on this episode, Sharon Jaynes, believes all the parts of our story are divine weapons against the enemy. That's a bold but true statement! In her book, When You Don't Like Your story: What If Your Worst Chapters Were Your Greatest Victories?, she writes, "God turns broken stories into beautiful prose and unwanted pages into stunning narratives of victory." Do you believe this? I do! She continues, "Our pain can become a portal of God's grace. Our ravaged pages can become God's redemptive masterpiece."Not only does Sharon share examples from her story that were painful and challenging, but she also shares how what felt like setbacks were really God setting her up for something good!Even though Sharon and I discuss several points from her book, we couldn't cover all the incredible content about why our worst chapters can become our greatest victories. So I recommend you get a copy of her book. Make sure you have a pen ready as there as so many valuable insights and words of wisdom you will want to remember! You can learn more about Sharon at www.sharonjaynes.
Scripture For Today: Ephesians 1:18 “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in His Holy people…” When You Don't Know What to Pray For Most believers can enlist the help of the Holy Spirit to help them pray about things without really knowing what the needs actually are. How do they do that? Well, for example, perhaps praying for your children or grand-children. You may not know exactly what the need it, but in your spirit, you are sensing you rneed to pray for them. As you begin to pray, the Holy Spirit will give you utterance and you will pray out the perfect Will of God for them in other tongues. I've heard testimonies of this in action and was told later by the person sharing with me, there child reported to them later that, as the situation was unfolding, they could sense their parent praying and that gave the strength to endure whatever it was that was happening at the time. These are not isolated instances. They happen every day all around the world. Amen. You cannot wait to believe God heard your prayer until AFTER you see or hear from your loved ones in these situations. You need to believe you are sensing correctly, start praying in the Holy Spirit in other tongues, believe you receive the answer while you are praying and when you say “Amen” – SO BE IT. Can I get an AMEN, now? Praise God! When I am aware of and KNOW there is a problem, I can begin to start to pray in tongues and, usually, before I'm even finished praying, I have the answer to the problem in my spirit. It could be business related, a loved one, whatever the case may be. But it always works the same way. Amen. Ephesians 6:18 says, “Praying always, with all prayer and supplications in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” This is a way to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ, where ever they are at in the world. This is the prayer that is prayed in the Spirit for all believers. There have been times, many times, when I sensed something was wrong and I did not know what to pray or who to pray for. I knew I needed to pray, but did not know the details at all. So, in this situations, I would just depend on the Holy Spirit to help me and I would begin to pray in tongues, trusting Him to direct the prayers I was making in the appropriate way. Amen. When You Don’t Get The Answer You Desire Or Expect, Remember God Knows The Larger Picture And Has Something Bigger Planned 2 Samuel 7:8 - 16 8“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. 9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. 10And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 11and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders a over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: 12When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me b ; your throne will be established forever.’ ”
So many of us don’t like the story God is writing in our lives. Circumstances that are out of our control often take over our thinking and hold us back. So how do we come to grips with the pieces of our story we wish weren’t there? How do we silence the pain of what’s been done to us and the shame of what we’ve allowed to be done through us?These are tough questions that my guest today is not afraid to tackle.Sharon Jaynes is a conference speaker and the author of 25 books (seriously!). She served as vice president and radio cohost of Proverbs 31 Ministries for ten years and is the cofounder of Girlfriends in God, which strives to cross generational, racial, and denominational boundaries to bring the body of Christ together as believers. This is such a powerful episode. Opening up about her abusive home growing up and challenges throughout her life, Sharon guides us through how we navigate the painful parts of our story to find true healing. I’ve known her newest book, When You Don’t Like Your Story, was coming out for some time now, and I have a long list of people I want to get a copy to!I believe this episode will be such an encouragement to you, and I look forward to hearing what stands out most to you. We know we need more clients and we need clients coming back and referring us when they've used our services, or visited our eCommerce store, or come into our retail outlet. Getting new clients starts with Showing Up. But, SHOWING UP isn't always easy, even for the most outgoing women. SHOWING UP in a consistent way can be tricky when we have so many competing demands on our time. But I know from personal experience that to get new clients, reach more people, make connections, and create an audience ready for our offers, it takes showing up. That's when we are rewarded with more clients, more leads and a network of people who know, like and trust us and refer business to us. Showing up even if... You're an introvert You're not sure about how to talk about your business without rambling or feeling like you're boring people You don't like your appearance. You don't know that anyone really needs or wants your product or service. Had a really tough time last year and you're still reeling from the experience of lockdown and changes brought on by COVID, and perhaps that experience has you feeling less confident and doubting yourself. That's where you start to see the rewards. Sounds simple enough. But I get it. Showing up isn't easy for me either. Even though I have a podcast, I do Facebook LIVES, run workshops, run a high-level mastermind, speak on people's webinars, speak on stages at live events, etc. It's still not easy. And as an introvert, I still struggle a little in the day-to-day. But here is what changed things for me. Having the RIGHT PLACE to SHOW UP - somewhere where I'd feel comfortable even if I wasn't feeling successful and if I didn't know where to start finding clients or getting the word out about my business Having an EASY WAY to SHOW UP that felt natural and didn't need me to have it all figured out - with my perfect sales pitch and a pile of business cards ready to hand out to anyone who'd take one. Listen to hear how showing up brings the rewards of getting more clients, reaching more people and feeling more connected without feeling like you have to be sales or pushy, and even if you're an introvert. Mentioned in this episode: Get New Clients Coaching Week 8-14 March 2021 At Coaching Week, I coach you through my go-to blueprint for landing your next client without having to cold call, even if you don’t have an email list, you find it hard to explain what you do, or you find yourself backing away from asking for the sale. By the end of this coaching week, you’ll know how to find the right people and speak confidently about your business without feeling like you're being salesy... and while the week is valued at $350 and we’ve added over $1,250 in bonuses, I’m making the week available for just $10. Do you ever feel stuck, trying to make a decision but feeling unsure what you should do next? Maybe you find yourself asking: Should I start a membership? Should I be on instagram? Should I do an online course? Should I update my website? I don’t have a lead magnet. I don’t know what to do to get leads. I don’t know what to focus on. It can be crazy-making. Not only for you but also for those around you to hear you going back and forth, overwhelmed and in a state of indecision. That overthinking and spinning your wheels takes up a lot of your energy but it also impacts others around you. So, what do I do now when I’m stuck in indecision? Anytime I am stuck not sure what to do about a situation I ask this one question. It’s the best question to ask when you don’t know what to do next. And I’m talking about it in today’s podcast episode. If you can relate, this episode is for you. Listen to discover: What to ask yourself when you don’t know what to do next Who to ask for support when you need it Why indecision is a trap (and a way out that keeps you moving backwards) The frustrating question that my mentor asked me Here are some popular recent episodes: When You Don’t have it All Figured Out, Do This The Clear Week In Tough Times, Communicate. Stop Over-drinking and Start Living, Episode 091, When You Don’t Feel Like You This episode I wanna talk about when you don’t feel like you. I hear this from so many women. They tell me, they used to feel good, they used to do fun things and hobbies and exercise and go out and try new things. Then they get into a habit of drinking wine and then before they even realize it they don’t feel like themselves. They feel stuck in a rut, they just want to drink wine at night, they tell me it’s just automatic sometimes they don’t even think about it. They aren’t inspired, they don’t get out there and do the things, sometimes their homes get cluttered, they don’t exercise anymore, their relationships just feel flat. And then they tell me they just want to feel like themselves again. And instantly I know that they have lost that connection with themselves and the process of getting them back to knowing themselves and enjoying themselves is what is required to permanently stop over-drinking. Tune into this week’s episode and listen in how you can feel like you again. Living a Heart-Centered Life with Noel Elie It's easy to get lost in the supposed “normal” flow of life. By doing so, we hope it would lead us to the right place. But what we fail to see is this only leads us to go against our own flow, our own pursuit of our dreams and passions. Conforming to societal standards can become a stumbling block to our growth and success. So, how can we choose to live in our own flow? In today's episode, we’re joined by Noel Elie to explore what limits us from doing what we love. Noel shares how learning how to say “no” has helped her realize that she has a choice in everything. She discusses how she strikes a balance between finding success and doing her craft. She also shares the challenges and lessons she learned amid the pandemic. If you want to start living an unapologetic life, then this episode is perfect for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover the power of intuition in making the right decisions. How does writing down a happiness list help free your soul? Find out Noel’s definition of freedom and unconditional love and how she feels radically loved. Resources Noel Elie Productions Armchair Expert FREE workbook! Apply the lessons you learn from this episode as you listen! Enter your email below, and I’ll send it right away! Episode Highlights Noel’s Background She experienced what it was like to be multiracial when she moved to South Carolina from Florida. She moved to New York to pursue her dreams two days after she graduated high school. Although she found success in modeling, it became unhealthy when she developed an eating disorder. She went from modeling to producing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. After meeting Gabby Bernstein, one thing led to another, and she eventually created her own event company. Now, she gets to work with her skill sets while still following her passion. Creating Boundaries Setting boundaries is an uphill battle for Noel. It’s enriching, enlightening, and heartbreaking. There are days when she would be at the beach every day; other days, she wouldn't get out of bed. As she read through articles and videos of activists, she couldn’t help but feel helpless. She feels victimized as she looks back on what it was like being biracial. Noel is also learning how much she can devote to creating boundaries and taking care of herself without feeling selfish. We’re all in this fight, and she’s taking it one day at a time. Deciding What to Focus on It's a matter of setting boundaries. Noel's philosophy in life is this: “Jump, and the net will appear.” She says yes to things that make her feel good and no to things that don't. She trusts her gut and her intuition, and it has never failed her. It’s about finding the balance between having success in certain areas and doing your craft. She continues learning from her mistakes and growing from them. After her mom passed away, it put things in perspective on how she wants to live her life. Learning When to Say “No” Her intuition is very strong and steadfast. Sometimes she chooses to listen to it, and sometimes she doesn't. She has already seen red flags whenever she chooses not to listen to that voice. It's about shattering societal standards when you go against the flow of saying “yes.” Once you've tapped into that, you know that you have a choice. When she's creating, she wants to be in spirit as much as she can. When You Don’t See Your Future Although Noel has accomplished a lot, her life has not been all rainbows and butterflies. We all have a choice whether we want to be happy or in despair. Her mom chose to go beyond having a horrific childhood and getting cancer. Make a happiness list, and write down all the things that bring you joy. You can start with small steps. Once you start doing that, your soul will feel free. Inevitably, you’ll live in your own flow. Navigating Life Amid a Pandemic She got diagnosed with cyst fibroids, and she has been living with chronic pain for the past years. One of the ways to shrink the fibroids is to have a completely clean diet. Not being able to go out of the house stripped away a lot in her life. The pandemic has forced her to sit with different parts of herself that aren’t so pretty. It became her wake-up call to start listening to her body. It is also an opportunity for her to slow down. Looking Forward She's restructuring her company and up-leveling a lot of things. She trusts that she's being guided every day. For Noel, it feels liberating when she can surrender and be sure that there is a reason for wherever she's going. As someone with physical touch as a love language, she’s excited to hug her friends and meet them face to face. Noel’s Definition of . . . Freedom — Speaking her truth with no apology Unconditional love — From her mom’s wisdom, it is to fall in love with as many people and as many things as possible. A heart full of love is a heart that’s full. Feeling radically loved — Being fully supported and held and safe 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [08:54] “I'm really grateful to the white people that have been sharing and messing up and continuing to share and learn, right? Because I think a lot of people will just sit back and say, ‘This isn't my fight.’ And I think we're all one, and we're in this together, and so I'm taking it one day at a time.” [13:08] “I feel like some of my biggest lessons in life have been from my mistakes. And so continuing to say yes, say no, when it doesn't feel good, and then also forgiving myself when I fuck up.” [14:39] “How do you want to live it? Do you want to waste it, worrying about what people think of you? Or do you want to follow your purpose and your passion, and, you know, hopefully, it'll lead you to the right place?” [19:20] “Do you want to go by societal standards, or do you want to go and move how you want to move?” [33:46] “Fall in love every day with as many people and as many things as possible because a heart full of love is a heart that's full.” About Noel Noel Elie is the founder of the production and PR company Noel Elie Productions, LLC. She started her niche for producing and PR when she began working at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Now, Noel is an international event coordinator, social media strategist, actress, and soul-searcher. We want to believe that the churches and other Christian environments that our children grow up in will always be safe, but too often that isn't the case. This is something Jill Monaco knows all too well. After a sexual assault from a priest as a child, Jill grew up wondering what was wrong with her. What had she done to invite this horrible abuse? As her adult life fell into a spiral of continued sexual and spiritual abuse, Jill was forced to learn the truth of who God is and who he says she is apart from the brokenness of others that she was experiencing. Jill sits down with Davey to share some of her story and how she's helping others learn the hard lessons that God has taught her.
