Let's break this down into three clear, unmistakable signs that you're at a turning point in your life and how to navigate through it gracefully. Sign #1: You Feel Lost and Confused About What's Next You know that nagging sensation when nothing makes sense anymore? When you stare at your life, it's like a puzzle with missing pieces. You don't know what path to follow. At a crossroads, it's common to experience a mental or emotional fog. You might be asking yourself questions like, "What am I meant to be doing next?" Or "Why does this no longer feel right?" This confusion isn't something to fear; it's actually a call for more clarity and alignment in your life. Here's your action plan: Get crystal clear about what your heart yearns for. 1.  Grab a notebook or journal right now 2.  List your life areas: Career, Health, Relationships, Finance, Personal Growth 3.  Rate each area from a scale 1-10 4.  Circle the lowest-scoring area That's your starting point. Allow some space for stillness so that the answers you seek begin to reveal themselves. Don't try to fix everything at once. Trust that you're not broken; you are becoming. Pick the one area that scored the least points and set three specific, measurable goals. For example, if it's your relationship, your goal might be to improve communication with your partner, do more activities together, and communicate more often with your family and friends. Whatever your action steps are, put them down on paper because what gets written gets done. Identify what works and doesn't – what brings you joy? what feels heavy? 3. Create a specific replacement plan for each habit that doesn't serve you. Invincible Career - Claim your power and regain your freedom

“Nothing is working. I can't find a job!”I was talking with an acquaintance about their job search strategy recently. They complained that nothing they had tried was working. They had written and shared articles on social media, but the engagement wasn't very good. They had searched for jobs but couldn't find what they were seeking. * I asked how many articles they had written. * They said, “Two.” * I then asked how long they had been searching for relevant job listings. * They said, “A week.”Okay, folks. I'm sorry, but sometimes, more effort and patience are required! We seem to have turned into an instant gratification nation. Ubiquitous internet access, fast smartphones, thousands of online services, and the rise of AI have made us all expect instant answers and results. But it doesn't work that way. Your easy access is everyone's easy access. Everyone is posting, sharing, commenting, and competing for attention. I've published over 1,000 posts/articles over the past eight years. I started writing on Medium in 2017 and launched my Substack newsletter in 2019. I slowly built a decent number of readers on both platforms, but only in the last three months did my subscriber numbers really grow! I have a lot of failings, but I do have some personality traits that help me. I'm very persistent and patient. I will keep grinding away at something for years and years. * I've been working out almost every day for the past 16 years, and it took at least 4 years of lifting weights 5 days/week before I started seeing decent results. * I've been building and running my businesses since 2010 (never returned to a job). * I've been writing something every single day for years and years and years. I'm stubborn, if nothing else. Perhaps there have been times I should have given up. I know there are times other people definitely would have given up because I've watched them do exactly that. When to be patientSometimes, you just need to be patient. Stop expecting instant success! * Networking takes time.* Building an engaged audience takes time. * Looking for a new job in a terrible market in a struggling economy takes time. If you've invested many years in your current career, you may need to be more patient. It can often take approximately one month for every year of experience to find a new job (e.g., a full year if you have 12 years of experience). Also, you may need to be patient if you have many commitments and change would disrupt them. For example, your family might depend on your income, and you don't want to take your kids out of their local schools, so you can't just quit your job or jump at a new opportunity that would require a move. If you have a job you don't love but the job market is terrible, you may need to be patient and ride it out. But you should still be looking around. Treat it as a validation exercise. * Are you being paid what you should be?* Are you at the level you should be?* Are you being given the opportunities you could be?* Is your manager more supportive and mentoring than what's available elsewhere? I guess my early career years are an example of being patient. I worked for almost 10 years before I got my big break and started landing promotions that moved me up the leadership ladder. When to pivotIf you feel you're spinning your wheels, not getting any real traction, or running out of time, you may need to pivot and change strategies. At some point, more patience won't help. Also, if you have already been impacted by a layoff or business failure, you may need to make a change to survive. The degree of change depends on your situation, how long you've been trying other options, and your desired outcome. How much you pivot your career depends on what's possible and what's necessary. * Small pivot - Find a new job with an employer in the same industry and vertical (this is what most people do). * Medium pivot - Find a job with an employer in the same industry but in a different vertical (e.g., ecommerce instead of gaming).* Large pivot - Find a job with an employer in a completely different industry (e.g., transportation instead of tech) or geography (e.g., a different country).* Massive pivot - Change professions entirely using your transferrable talents and skills (e.g., a good manager is a good manager in any business). Or build your own business! The size of your pivot depends on what you do for a living, how deeply your job or business has been impacted, and how serious you are about doing whatever it takes to survive and thrive in this economic downturn.➡️ I go into more detail about these pivots in the podcast audio. Pascale  --------------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT ---------------------------  Episode 383: Set Yourself Free - Embracing The Magic Of Letting Go For Inner Peace Have you ever felt the need to let go of a particular thought or feeling, unaware of how to do it? Do you unconsciously and repeatedly recall the same hurtful memory and can't let it go?   Holding onto emotional baggage weighs us down and prevents us from living fully. But what if I told you we find true freedom in letting go? Imagine walking lighter, breathing smoothly, and feeling at peace simply by letting go.   Thank you for tuning in to episode 383 of The Everyday Life Balance Show, a podcast dedicated to helping you achieve emotional freedom and balance in your everyday life.   In today's episode, we'll explore releasing what no longer serves you, from painful memories to daily stress. You'll learn practical steps to free yourself emotionally, embrace peace, and create space for more joy in your life. Let's begin this journey together.   Here is the truth: most of us feel stressed out because we struggle to let go. We often struggle with old habits that keep us prisoners in the same old story. However, how do you set yourself free?   Let Go Of The Hurtful Memories Of The Past. Prisoners of the past hold on to what happened yesterday and fail to be present with NOW. Do you have an unpleasant memory you find difficult to let go of? It's time to shake it off, to feel the weight lift off your shoulders as you release these burdens because they no longer serve you. Holding on to unpleasant past memories stops you from living fully because it interferes with your emotional freedom or well-being and makes you a prisoner of the past.   If this resonates with you, take a moment to reflect on the following: How does the unpleasant memory of the past affect your life now? Being a prisoner of the past can be a destructive experience that creates suffering. It's time to set yourself free! I recommend seeking professional help or a self-help solution like Dr Harry Barry's Emotional Healing process. I followed his process in the past; it's been life-changing. You can listen to my emotional healing experience in episode 380, entitled "Heal Your Heart: Finding Emotional Freedom Through Love.”   Emotions are stored in the body; therefore, physical movement can be a powerful way to release tension and stress.   Shake It Off Physically Too many people hold on to physical tension for too long. Here are some ways to help yourself and let go of the tension: Exercising will help you re-energise and shake off the stress of the day. For example, if you had a stressful day at work, physical exercise helps you change your state from exhaustion to mental and physical upliftment due to the release of feel-good hormones when you exercise. To let go of any mental and physical tension, make it a habit to boost your happy hormones with regular activity. By the way, it doesn't have to be strenuous because gentle stretches are highly effective. I stretch all the time. Smelling the roses is another way to let go. For example, a nice, meditative walk in nature surrounded by wildlife, trees, and flowers can help you let go of worries. As you stroll in nature or cycle, fill your lungs consciously with oxygen and slowly release carbon dioxide. Enjoy this peaceful moment as if you have no worries in the world. Allow yourself to let go. Dancing with your favourite music or singing in the bathroom is a great way to shake it all off as you allow your free spirit to express itself. When we hold onto pain, our body stores it as tension, affecting our nervous system. Exercise, whether it's walking, stretching, or dancing, helps shift stuck energy, allowing us to move forward emotionally and physically.   Let Go Of Worry Learning to let go is a new habit you need to develop to invite more lightness into your life. This leads me to the subject of worry. Concerns or worries are disrupters of peace. Dale Carnegie affirms in his book "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" that 70% of our worries are money problems. What about you?   Worrying is one of the hardest things to let go of because it feels productive. But the truth is, worry doesn't solve problems; it only drains our energy and keeps us stuck in fear. Instead of letting worry control your thoughts, try this three-step method to regain peace of mind: 1.   Identify your most significant worry, your 70%. Take a moment to clearly define what is causing stress. Write it down if needed. Often, when we name our worries, they feel less overwhelming. Worry can be caused by health issues, finances, children, and relationships at home and work. 2.   Ask yourself: Can I control this? If the answer is yes, shift your focus to taking action. What steps can you take to improve the situation? If the answer is no, practise acceptance and consciously release it. Remind yourself that worrying won't change the outcome. 3.   Replace worry with action or surrender: If the situation is within your control, take small, constructive steps to address it. If it's outside your control, use deep breathing, meditation or journaling to release the fear and shift into trust. By practising these steps, you train your mind to let go of unnecessary worry and focus on what truly matters. And lastly, let's talk about relationship worry.   Improve your relationships As an advocate of the power of love, let go of wanting to be right all the time. It's ok to make mistakes. If you have a troubling relationship and the E.G.O (Edging God Out) gets in the way, lovingly solving the problem would mean seeking first to understand and then to be understood. There might be a misunderstanding you might not be aware of. Seeking first to understand opens our hearts and helps us see the situation more lovingly and with a new perspective. Miscommunication is a common ailment in relationships and leads to conflicts. If this relates to you, first seek to understand the person you are in conflict with compassionately. By the way, you might be thinking, why should I? However, give it a try. What happens in your mind and body when you do? Do you feel lighter or less angry or resentful? The process of seeking first to understand, then to be understood, taken from Stephen Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," which sold millions of copies, is a powerful way to view situations openly and let go of negative emotions.   Today's episode is an invitation to develop a new habit: letting go. As you release, you let go of the unpleasantness, open up your heart again, and free yourself mentally and physically.   Here is a recap of the three letting-go habits you can develop to invite more peace into your life: 1.   Let go of the hurtful memories of the past to live fully in the present moment. 2.   Establish an exercise routine to shake it all off physically and release feel-good hormones. 3.   Let go of worry by following the three-step method to regain peace of mind. 4.   Seek first to understand, then to be understood, to improve your relationships. Letting go is not about giving up; it's about making space for something better. When you release a painful memory, a worry, or a limiting belief, you take back your power and move one step closer to emotional freedom. So, as you go through your week, ask yourself: What am I ready to release? It could be a past hurt, an unrealistic expectation, or the need to control an outcome. Invincible Career - Claim your power and regain your freedom

The Job Market Is FrozenThat was the recent headline of an Atlantic article. It reflects the baffling frustration many job seekers are feeling right now. “Six months. Five-hundred-seventy-six applications. Twenty-nine responses. Four interviews. And still, no job.”Already in 2025, we are seeing a flurry of firings and layoffs happening across the corporate world and now in the U.S. federal government, too. This means that an estimated 200K displaced workers will enter the job market and compete for scarce jobs. How scarce? Well, the pace of hiring has slowed to levels last seen shortly after the Great Recession. Also, voluntary quitting to find a new job has fallen to its lowest level in a decade. People are worried, so they're staying put (if they can). Employers are concerned about the economy, so they aren't hiring. The job market is frozen. And now, with the recent tariffs, the stock market tanked, consumer confidence is falling as threats of inflation rise, and some are whispering the word “recession.” All of this is influencing my outlook for job searchers. * The layoffs and firings will continue in the U.S. this year. * More job seekers will enter the market to compete with you. * Fewer jobs will be available in the U.S. because companies are freezing hiring. * Even if you do land a U.S. job, you may get laid off soon after. * The political and economic turmoil will continue to damage our economy. My recommendationIf you need a new job and can work remotely (or with some travel), I highly encourage you to seek employment with a company based outside the U.S. A few people misunderstood my recommendation when I suggested this recently in a Substack note. They assumed that employment with a non-U.S. company would always require moving to a new country. Yes, that could be a requirement, and some people don't mind it at all (e.g., a few of my clients and friends have relocated to other countries over the past few years). However, I also have clients and colleagues who work for international companies and still live in the U.S. Let me give you a few examples: * Atlassian has its global HQ in Sydney, Australia. But, several friends of mine worked for them in their San Francisco office. * IKEA was founded in Sweden and is incorporated and headquartered in the Netherlands. They're always hiring in their U.S. locations. * Rakuten is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, but it also has offices in San Mateo and San Francisco, California. * 1Password is based in Toronto, Canada, but they hire for remote positions, too (U.S. or Canada). * Located in Virginia Beach, VA, STIHL Inc. is the U.S. affiliate of the global STIHL Group, founded in Germany. * Finally, here are some top German companies doing business in the U.S. You can search for similar companies from any country you find interesting. Why international?Why do I recommend these companies headquartered outside of the U.S.? * They have diversified global teams that aren't trapped in our local political turmoil. * They have global revenue sources that aren't tied 100% to the U.S. economy. * They are not under the complete control of the U.S. federal government, and we've seen what happens when American companies bend the knee. * International companies are seeking and appreciate U.S. talent. The number of American workers hired by international companies grew 62% in 2023. My hope is these companies will be more willing to hire new employees than U.S. companies seem to be right now. Also, working for an international company opens up opportunities that could be interesting for you later. For example, a friend worked for an international company in one of their U.S. locations for many years. Then, they asked to be relocated to one of their offices in another country. Now, they live there permanently and have never been happier. Here are some resources to help you find a job with an international company. * 15 Best International Companies Hiring U.S. Remote Workers* U.S. workers are getting scooped up by international companies hiring remote roles* 30 International Companies Hiring* InternationalJobs.com* RemoteJob.io (look for non-U.S. employers)* We Work RemotelyOf course, your income taxes get a little more complicated when you have income from non-U.S. sources. So, check out this overview of U.S. taxes on foreign income for individuals. I also recommend talking with your accountant to ensure you appropriately handle reporting and tax payments. Working for an international company set up to hire in the U.S. (e.g., it has an incorporated presence here) means they should be handling reporting for you, but it's wise to verify. Additional complexity is never fun. But being out of work for a long time is even worse. So, if you are struggling to land a new job with a U.S. company in this crazy job market, consider opportunities beyond our borders.

What if Love could be the key to healing and emotional freedom? Hi, I'm Pascale Gibon, your host. In this episode of The Everyday Life Balance Show, I share how Love became my greatest healer and how it can become yours, too. Indeed, Love is a healing force and here is my story. “It's the first time I share this story with you. In my mid-twenties, the split between days of happiness and immense dissatisfaction was debilitating. In other words, I was on an emotional roller-coaster ride. I remember journaling a lot when I was a teenager. It was a great healing process. However, there was still a relationship I needed to heal—my relationship with my dad. My parents got divorced when I was three, and my dad's absence throughout my life meant that I felt rejected and struggled with self-acceptance. During my emotional roller-coaster in my mid-twenties, I realised something had to change. I needed to heal this sense of dissatisfaction and feel more stable emotionally. That's when I found Dr. Harry Barry, a renowned author and medic, and his powerful book: "Emotional Healing – How To Put Yourself Together Back Again," which is based on his years of research and experience in the field of emotional healing, and it transformed my life.”  Here is what his book did for me: ·      I released any negative emotions that were sabotaging my wellbeing.  ·      The most significant shift from pain to healing was when I did one of Dr Barry's processes and discovered the thoughts and memories in my subconscious that held me back. ·      I experienced the greatest emotional freedom. I had the most incredible revelation after Dr Harry Barry's healing process. This revelation did not happen immediately but months after undergoing some introspection. I realised that the hurt I felt had a purpose: to open my heart and grow in Love. As a result, I opened my heart and forgave my dad. I shifted from a place of anger and resentment to one of Love and gratitude. Indeed, I was grateful to my dad for giving me life, and his absence served the most positive purpose to grow in Love. Where would I be if I had not decided to heal my emotions? I would have contracted my heart from Love instead of opening it to more abundance and grace. Love is more than just a feeling; it's a choice we make every day. If you're wondering how to begin using Love as a healing tool, here are some simple steps to guide you: 1.   Acknowledge the hurt or discomfort 2.   Seek first to understand by understanding the other person's perspective 3.   Choose to release the pain, even if it's hard. Healing might take time. 4.   Practise gratitude for the lessons learnt. 5.   Surround yourself with positive affirmations about Love and healing. Should you find yourself where I was and ready to heal the past hurt and emotions, it matters to do it with this outcome in mind: emotional freedom. Emotional freedom means being mindful of the present moment, waking up without the weight of past hurt, responding to life with peace rather than pain, and embracing every moment with an open heart. However, emotional freedom through expanding Love is even more powerful. It is the ability to feel all emotions without being controlled by them. It means acknowledging pain, fear, or anger without letting them dictate your actions or mood. You will overcome whatever shakes your emotional stability because you have built spiritual strength through your healing journey. Emotional freedom feels like being peaceful or choosing peace always over emotional turmoil. Let's do this heart-opening exercise together: Close your eyes lightly. Place your hand gently on your heart, and take a deep breath. As you inhale deeply, imagine Love filling your heart. As you exhale slowly, release any pain or resentment. You can say it out loud: I release any pain or resentment. Repeat this until your heart feels lighter. May this episode inspire you to embark on a healing journey. Are you ready to grow and be free? If so: Choose freedom over fear. Choose Love over life-long resentment. Choose wellbeing over dis-ease. Everybody naturally seeks happiness. However, let me share a secret of paramount importance: the more we embody Love as our guiding light and power, the happier we become.  Unhealed pain can manifest as anxiety, resentment, jealousy, emotional roller-coaster or even physical illness. It limits our joy, keeps us in the past, clouds our judgment, and strains our relationships. Today, I invite you to start your healing journey. Reflect on what needs healing in your heart, and take one step towards Love and forgiveness. Write a letter to someone you need to forgive, even if you never send it. Surround the person you think about with Love, pour out your heart and then let it go. Remember, Love heals and frees. I look forward to connecting with you next Monday. Invincible Career - Claim your power and regain your freedom

We may feel powerless at times like these, but we are not. Over 70M people in the U.S. didn't want the outcome we are dealing with now. Millions more are now regretting choices made that enabled what is happening.However, if we unite, we become powerful. The coordinated focus of our time, energy, and money would have a massive impact on those who think we have no voice. We are familiar with the idea of voting with our dollars. We change our spending habits to favor one business over another, to show that we reject a corporation's policies, and to influence a company's actions. It happens all the time. But we also live in an online world that isn't about the money we spend with a company. Instead, it's about the time and attention we give to their platforms, services, and apps. We are the product. Our data, behavior, and clicks are harvested to feed their advertising platforms. We don't pay Meta to use Facebook, for example. But that corporation sure makes a significant profit from our time spent in the app. So, we can vote with our time and attention, too, not just our dollars. By deactivating or deleting our accounts, we can starve specific platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X). We can also feed other platforms that represent the values we believe in (e.g., Bluesky). Money talks. When a company loses enough advertising revenue, they take notice. They may decide to change their policies and actions before it's too late, and they lose everything. We have the power to make that happen if we are willing to redistribute our time and attention. We can decide how we spend our money, time, and attention. We get to choose the companies that we feel are aligned with our values. But there is another way to live your values and influence policy that we don't talk about as often: Where you work.You can also “vote” with your blood, sweat, and tears. Our jobs are where we spend a significant portion of our adult lives. Of course, we need to work to live. We must cover our bills, buy groceries, and pay for housing. But work is already hard enough without being completely miserable while we are doing it. And working for an employer that doesn't align with your values adds another layer of pain to the misery. Being selective about choosing an employer is undoubtedly a privilege that not everyone can enjoy. If you live in a small community with few employers and no options for remote work, you are stuck with few choices. I grew up in a tiny farm town like that. The online world hadn't been created yet, and few local employers existed. You took any job you could find. However, those who do have more options for their career paths can use this opportunity to research, plan, and select employment that:* Aligns with their values.* Supports their belief system. * Positions them for the future. * Gives them flexibility and resilience. I'm Pascale Gibon, your host, and I'm glad you're here. Today, we'll explore the power of intention, discover the nature of our limiting beliefs, and practical ways to step into our freedom. Let's begin. Setting Your Intentions An intention is a clear goal, purpose or idea you commit to carrying out. When you intend to create meaningful change, it's essential to approach your life with intentionality. For personal expansion, breaking free from limiting beliefs means committing 100% to stepping into your power. Take a moment to reflect: If you could wave a magic wand, what limiting belief would you let go of to make your dreams come true? What is one intention you can set today to help you move closer to personal freedom? Pause the episode if you need more time to reflect, and return when you're ready to continue. Intentions are powerful because they align your thoughts and actions toward a desired outcome. But before you can fully embrace them, it's crucial to identify the beliefs that may be holding you back. Where Do You Hold Yourself Back? What is a belief? It's the acceptance that something exists or is true. The etymology of belief is to have trust. However, our limiting beliefs keep us from thriving authentically. Henry Ford famously said, « Whether you believe you can or you can't, you are right. What you believe about yourself often stems from past experiences or societal conditioning, but they don't have to define your future. Let's take a closer look at areas where limiting beliefs may be affecting different areas of your life: 1.   Finances: Do you believe there's a limit to how much you can earn or achieve financially? 2.   Career: Are you holding yourself back from pursuing your dream job or career that aligns with your passion? Take a moment to journal your thoughts if it's safe to do so: What's one area in your life where your beliefs limit you? How would your life change if you replaced that belief with one that empowers you? Reflecting on these questions is the first step toward shifting your mindset.  If you could wave that magic wand again, what would you accomplish after empowering your beliefs and tapping into your inner strength? Let's do a quick exercise: Close your eyes and visualize your next level of growth. Imagine yourself achieving a goal you once thought was impossible. What does it feel like? Capture this feeling in a journal entry or share it in the community with the hashtag #EverydayFreedom. Moving from doubt to faith is a necessary transition. By planting this idea long enough within your heart, you nurture emotionally the confidence and courage you need to grow and become unstoppable. We must first change our perspective of what's possible to step into this new reality. Freedom Lies in Perspective True freedom begins when you expand your perspective and believe in possibility. As Walt Disney said: “There are few heights that can't be scaled by someone who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret can be summarized in four C's: they are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage and Constancy, and the greatest of these is confidence. When you believe in a thing, believe it all the way. Have confidence in your ability to do it right. And work hard to do the best possible job.” We build confidence through consistent action. Think about learning a new skill, like riding a bicycle. It might feel impossible at first, but with patience and practice, you find your balance and master the skill. Breaking free from limiting beliefs works the same way: one step, one action, one empowering thought at a time. Let's put this idea into practice. Take action today! Identify one small step you can take this week to build confidence in an area where you've felt stuck. Write it down, commit to it, and celebrate your progress. Today I'm talking to Sabrina Magnan, a Food Freedom & Intuitive Eating Coach, based in Montreal, Canada. She helps chronic dieters heal their relationship with food & their bodies, and develop realistic and lasting health-promoting habits. Sabrina has been on her own food healing journey through her battle with orthorexia, disordered eating, body dysmorphia and yo-yo dieting. Having experienced this for many years, she deeply understands what it's like to have your entire life revolve around food & your body. After discovering what actually works in recovery, to stop feeling out of control around food and understanding the psychology of behaviour change, Sabrina now supports women all over the world to help them find true health, free from obsession & guilt. Invincible Career - Claim your power and regain your freedom

“I'm putting in long hours and working harder than ever. Why am I not getting promoted?”Do you know how many times I've heard that complaint? Sure, working harder than your peers can get you promoted during the early years of your career. But you will soon find that what got you where you are today won't get you where you want to be tomorrow. Most people play checkers with their careers. They hop around the board, marching ahead, step by step, and don't think more than one step ahead. The game board looks similar. In the early days of your career, you and the other pieces are making the same moves—trying to get head, space by space. But you eventually find out that strategy won't cut it. Your career growth is limited when you behave like a checker piece on the corporate chess game board. Unfortunately, many people experience that. They think more of the same will continue to move them ahead. * Working harder * Working longer hours * Taking on more workSadly, that is the path to stagnation and abuse. Yes, abuse. I've watched many people get used by their employers. Many managers love dumping work on the people who work hard, don't complain, and never ask for raises or promotions. So, if you want to avoid being stuck in checker mode, there are five things you must do:* Become a valuable chess piece* Use strategic long-term planning* Leverage pattern recognition* Make sacrificial moves when necessary* Play leadership chess, too1. Become a valuable chess pieceIf you want to play chess, you must qualitatively change how you work and transform the value you deliver. Leaders don't get promoted because they work harder than their peers. They get promoted because they think differently, add unique value, get results, and know how to make 1+1=3. World-class chess players don't randomly flail away moving pieces on the board. They never think one step ahead and hope things work out. So, stop behaving like an interchangeable checker piece. In the game of checkers, every individual piece has the same capabilities (i.e., hopping one space forward). You can easily be replaced if you are a commodity with the same skills as everyone else. Heck, maybe they can even find a cheaper piece to replace you! And if they can do that, they will. I watched that happen many times over the decades of my career. A senior employee was often replaced with a more affordable junior employee who could do the same work. I remember an executive saying, “Why should we pay this much for a U.S. employee? I can hire three designers in country XYZ for that salary.” A basic U.S. checker piece was often replaced with more affordable international pieces. Basic pieces were also frequently put on the inevitable layoff lists about every six months. However, the employees who had leveled up to provide unique strategic value were never replaced. Their cost was never questioned. Instead, they were assigned the best and most challenging projects. They were the ones promoted when the review cycles rolled around every year. I often ran into the unfortunately common belief that tenure will eventually lead to a promotion. Some employees thought they would keep moving up the career ladder if they stayed with the company long enough. I'm sorry, but higher-level promotions simply don't work that way. A pawn that has been with the company for 5 years—but still acts and performs like a pawn—won't be promoted to knight simply because of tenure. Level up and transform yourself, or be stuck where you are forever. 2. Use strategic long-term planningProfessionals who end up succeeding in their careers are thinking many, many steps ahead. They aren't simply focused on their next career move. They have a vision for where they want to be several years from now—sometimes even decades. Every move they make is intentional and sets them up for the next move and the next. They use strategic thinking instead of scattered and mindless hopping. One of my old colleagues and friends had a clear vision for where they wanted to end their career—as a C-level executive in a public company. Every move they made was deliberately planned to help them advance toward that goal. * New projects* New connection in their network* New skills and experiences* New domains* New jobs with the right employers* Seizing new opportunities when they appeared Over the years, I watched them make smart moves until they finally did land that C-level role. It was definitely a clever game of corporate chess, not checkers.
