Austin Hatch is the embodiment of resilience and relentless growth. Surviving not one, but two tragic plane crashes that claimed the lives of his immediate family members, Austin defied the odds and went on to earn a Division 1 basketball scholarship at the University of Michigan. Guided by unwavering faith, a steadfast commitment to his family, and a mindset forged in adversity, Austin now shares his journey and his "GRIT" framework as a sought-after motivational speaker. Honoring those he lost, Austin is dedicated to helping others thrive in the face of adversity and to leaving people and places better than he found them. Takeaways: Purpose is Everything: Austin emphasizes the importance of having a “because” that’s bigger than yourself—his family is his deeper purpose and what keeps him moving forward even during life’s toughest moments. GRIT is a Daily Discipline: Success over the long term is built on daily decisions to show up with growth, resilience, integrity, and a team-first mentality. Austin’s GRIT framework turns adversity into opportunity. Gratitude and Action Go Hand-in-Hand: Practicing gratitude is a conscious choice that can’t coexist with negativity. Pairing this mindset with urgent, intentional action creates real, lasting impact. Sound Bites: “If it’s just for us, we’ll probably throw in the towel, give up. But if we remember that greater purpose, that why...we’ll always be willing to do what it takes to overcome.” “It’s impossible to be truly grateful and very negative at the same time. Those two emotions can’t coexist.” “You may not be the best on the team, but you can be your best for the team.” Quote by Mick: “If you’re not getting better, you’re falling way behind, right?” Connect & Discover Austin: Website: https://austin-hatch.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-hatch-530727a6/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/austin.j.hatch/ Website: Players for Good FOLLOW MICK ON:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mickunplugged/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mickunplugged/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mickunplugged LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mickhunt/Website: https://www.mickhuntofficial.com Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mick-unplugged/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A great learning experience comes at the material using different practices—listening, reading, memorizing, interrogating, doing, speaking, and/or writing about the idea until it crystallizes in the student's mind. And a great teacher facilitates those practices in his class plan. For his talk at the 2024 Forum Teaching Conference, upper school teacher Austin Hatch borrowed the “three modes of teaching” proposed by author and educator Mortimer Adler. These are: didactic instruction, supervised practice, and active participation. Mr. Hatch explains why they are each needed in good proportion, and what each can look like in the classroom. This story is special to me and I wanted to share it again with you as we start 2024. Austin Hatch's episode first aired 3/20/19 and I shared his story in Raising Empowered Athletes (Chapter 13, WE over ME). It's all about living in THIS moment and taking advantage of what's in front of you. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! Austin Hatch is a survivor. A two-time plane crash survivor, he epitomizes what it means to be resilient. In 2003, at the age of 8, Austin's mother, sister and brother were tragically killed plane crash. Eight years later, with many hours of hard work, the 6'6” basketball phenom was offered a college scholarship from his dream school, University of Michigan. Just nine days later, Austin would be aboard a plane with his father and “second mother” (he never considered her a step-mom) and this plane too would go down, killing both his parents and leaving Austin in a coma with severe injuries including traumatic brain injury. I was so honored to speak with Austin and hear him talk about how he made it to the University of Michigan through tireless work, unrelenting positivity that “a miracle is going to happen” and belief that he was truly blessed to have had all of his amazing family members in his life. We can learn so much from Austin's outlook as we parent and raise adults about what it means to be optimistic, even in darkest of times and what the belief in yourself and gratitude for the gifts you have been given can do for you. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kirsten-jones0/support

Austin Hatch's story is one of tragedy, incomprehensible loss, and triumph. On Labor Day of 2003, Austin and his family were flying from Northern Michigan to Fort Wayne, IN. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Austin's dad threw him out of the plane to save his life and ran back into the plane to get his mom and siblings. Tragically, Austin and his dad were the only survivors. They grieved the loss of their family and pushed on, which is what they would've wanted. Eventually, his dad remarried a woman with three children and they formed a wonderful blended family. Austin saw success as a basketball player and got a full scholarship to the University of Michigan. Just nine days later, tragedy struck again. Austin was flying with his dad to Northern Michigan when they experienced another tragic plane crash. This time Austin was the only survivor. In schools today, Shakespeare is often taught superficially. Students attempt to grasp the plot with the aid of their teacher, who helps them through the difficult Elizabethan English. At best they learn something about the beautification of language and the cultural significance of the Bard. But his work is not taught as it was written to be understood, that is, sapientially, for growth in practical wisdom and the ability to see more clearly the nature of man and the man's relationship with both fellow man and God. This week on HeightsCast, we welcome back Dr. Matthew Mehan for a discussion of Shakespeare and the education of leaders. Associate Dean and Assistant Professor at Hillsdale's Van Andel Graduate School of Government, Dr. Mehan helps us see that there is more to Shakespeare than is immediately apparent from a surface-level reading of his plays. He explains how a deep reading of the Bard offers a training in that nimbleness of mind—a good mother wit—without which, St. Thomas More said, all learning is half lame. To do this, Dr. Mehan walks us through the opening of Hamlet, Act V. Not only does he offer an example of Shakespeare's genius, he also gives an example of how to teach Shakespeare as not only aesthetically delightful but also morally instructive and useful—the ideal companion to theology and philosophy. For educators interested in learning more about Shakespeare and how to teach him as a teacher of wisdom, check out the Forum's summer workshop on Shakespeare. For the month of October I will be turning back the clocks and sharing some of my favourite episodes that inspire a message of faith, hope and love. On episode 194 we revisit episode 88 with Austin Hatch. Austin is a motivational speaker and survivor of two plane crashes. On Labor Day of 2003, Hatch and his family were flying home from their vacation home in northern Michigan. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Hatch's dad threw him out of the plane, saving his life and went back into the flames to get his mother, sister and brother, but tragically, was unable to. His mother, sister and brother did not survive. Hatch and his father grieved their loss but became each other's lifeline through the grief, pushing each other to overcome the loss, as he knew his mom, sister and brother would've wanted. Hatch's dream was to play for Michigan. On June 15, 2011, Coach Beilein offered him a full scholarship to play basketball at The University of Michigan, which he accepted. Nine days later, on June 24th, 2011, Hatch's father and “second mother” were flying to their vacation home to have a weekend of celebration. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and Hatch's father and second mom were killed on impact. Hatch suffered severe injuries and nearly lost his life. After being in a coma for two months, he had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat and basically how to live his life, once he woke up. With the help of many, many people and against the odds, Hatch persevered and was able to make a solid comeback to take the place at university that was held open for him. Seven years later, Hatch became a graduate of The University of Michigan and is working at Dominos' corporate offices. Hatch is married to an absolutely, incredible woman named Abigail who pushes him forward, making him better every single day. He considers himself to be blessed – with an incredible family and with his wife, looking forward to building one of their own in a few years. Hatch believes that in part, the reason he survived two plane crashes, endured tragic losses and made it through an amazing road to recovery, was to help others. He has been sharing his story of encouragement to help inspire others to work harder and get better in the years since. Austin Hatch has survived not one, but TWO plane crashes in his life at the ages of 8 and 16. The first took the lives of his mother, older sister, and younger brother. The second took the lives of his father and stepmother and left him in critical condition. This week I am joined by motivational speaker Austin Hatch, survivor of two plane crashes. On Labor Day of 2003, Hatch and his family were flying home from their vacation home in northern Michigan. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Hatch’s dad threw him out of the plane, saving his life and went back into the flames to get his mother, sister and brother, but tragically, was unable to. His mother, sister and brother did not survive. Hatch and his father grieved their loss but became each other’s lifeline through the grief, pushing each other to overcome the loss, as he knew his mom, sister and brother would’ve wanted. A year later, Hatch’s dad met a lovely woman named Kimberley, who had three kids of her own. The couple was married about a year after meeting and together, they had a wonderful blended family. Meanwhile, Hatch worked hard on athletic skills and began to have success on the basketball court. Hatch’s dream was to play for Michigan. Then on June 15, 2011, Coach Beilein offered him a full scholarship to play basketball at The University of Michigan, which he accepted. Nine days later, on June 24th, 2011, Hatch's father and “second mother” were flying to their vacation home to have a weekend of celebration. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and Hatch’s father and second mom were killed on impact. Seven years later, Hatch became a graduate of The University of Michigan and is working at Dominos’ corporate offices. Hatch is married to an absolutely, incredible woman named Abigail who pushes him forward, making him better every single day. He considers himself to be blessed – with an incredible family and with his wife, looking forward to building one of their own in a few years. The couple lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan where Abigail works for the Michigan Athletic Department. Hatch believes that in part, the reason he survived two plane crashes, endured tragic losses and made it through an amazing road to recovery, was to help others. He has been sharing his story of encouragement to help inspire others to work harder and get better in the years since. In this episode you will hear: - 1 in 11,560,000,000,000 - blessed is he who perseveres under trial - Overcome It - "I can't wait to coach you" - Coach Beilein showing his leadership integrity - GRIT - An example is always better than an opinion I hope this episode positively impacts you in some way and inspires you to show up and keep moving forward. Episode 298 Austin Hatch is an inspiration. His story has been seen and told by places like ESPN, NBC Nightly News, People Magazine and many others. On September 1, 2003, at the age of 8, Austin survived a plane crash that took the lives of his mom, sister and brother. On June 24, 2011, 9 days after making his commitment to play college basketball at the University of Michigan, Austin was the only survivor in a second plane crash that took the lives of his father and his step-mother. Hatch had suffered brain trauma, fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, a fractured hip, two broken collarbones, and holes in his lung. He was also in a six-week-long induced coma. He had to relearn how to walk and talk. Austin would make a full recovery and return to Michigan in 2014, achieving his dream of playing basketball for the Wolverines. On this powerful episode of the podcast, we talk to Austin about surviving 2 plane crashes, how he's been able to turn something to tragic into something good, leaning on his faith in God, what coach John Beilein and the Michigan Wolverines has meant to him, and how his recovery after the second plane crash helped him grieve and even more, drew him closer to the Lord. Austin Hatch is a survivor. A two-time plane crash survivor, he epitomizes what it means to be resilient. In 2003, at the age of 8, Austin’s mother, sister and brother were tragically killed plane crash. Eight years later, with many hours of hard work, the 6’6” basketball phenom was offered a college scholarship from his dream school, University of Michigan. Just nine days later, Austin would be aboard a plane with his father and “second mother” (he never considered her a step-mom) and this plane too would go down, killing both his parents and leaving Austin in a coma with severe injuries including traumatic brain injury. Today, I was so honored to speak with Austin and hear him talk about how he made it to the University of Michigan through tireless work, unrelenting positivity that “a miracle is going to happen” and belief that he was truly blessed to have had all of his amazing family members in his life. We can learn so much from Austin’s outlook as we parent and raise adults about what it means to be optimistic, even in darkest of times and what the belief in yourself and gratitude for the gifts you have been given can do for you.
Austin Hatch has had an amazing journey of hardship and loss but has continued to press on. After losing his family in two plane crashes and nearly losing his own Austin continues to inspire people around this globe with his story of perseverance.

When I first saw the Austin Hatch story on TV, I knew I had to write a podcast episode about it. I was so touched by Austin's outlook on life and his belief in himself, that I wanted to share it with you. Who is Austin Hatch? Austin Hatch is 2 x plane crash survivor, who faced tremendous loss at an early age. Austin lost his mother, brother and sister in a plane crash when he was 8 years old and then his father an step-mother in a 2nd plane crash when he was 16. Austin survived the 2nd plane crash but with near-fatal injuries, so severe that the doctors believe that Austin would be bedridden for the rest of his life. What makes Austin's story so inspirational and what can we learn from it? Key point - Believe in Yourself Austin's belief was so strong that he worked himself out of a wheelchair to fulfill his life-long dream to play basketball for the University of Michigan. Here is an excerpt from the episode: Because in spite of everything that he had been through, 2 plane crashes, losing his family, Austin was determined to not only go forward to make the best out of his life, he was determined to fulfill his dream.
