COSATU and SAFTU trade barbs over proposed labour law amendments

The country's two largest labour federations, COSATU and SAFTU have been at each other's throat and trading barbs in the days leading up to Workers Day as they sharply differ over proposed labour law amendments. The proposed amendments include changes to the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and the Minimum Wage Act. COSATU says it remains confident that the final legislation will continue to protect workers' rights and that such protections will be further extended while SAFTU on the other hand has criticised the amendments claiming that they will put workers under siege and erode workers' hard-won rights guaranteed by the Constitution. COSATU has accused SAFTU of peddling of fake news and falsehoods in pursuit of headlines while SAFTU is accusing COSATU of being party to what they call "secret talks at Nedlac" that will betray workers rights. To find out why they have such divergent views on the proposed labour law amendments Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Mathew Parks - COSATU Parliamentary Co-ordinator and Newton Masuku - SAFTU National Spokesperson

On the day set aside to honor those who labor in America, here's a modest proposal: Let's clearly lift up not just the millions of our countrymen and women purportedly represented by what have become virulently leftist unions, but the vastly larger number us who are not.  For starters, let's take a page out of the Left's playbook and rename Labor Day. How about calling it instead “All American Workers Day.”   This would explicitly recognize everyone who works for the common good, unlike the current holiday which generally emphasizes those whose dues support labor organizations. That's especially desirable since, unlike most of their American members, many of those unions are deeply hostile to this nation. Going forward, let us celebrate, and thereby encourage, love of country and all those who work to make America a stronger, more prosperous and freer nation. This is Frank Gaffney.

Tomorrow is Workers Day, a day when worker issues are brought into sharp focus. South Africa's 225 registered trade unions represent approximately three million workers, but changing employment contracts, including outsourcing, informatisation of jobs, and remote working, have led to diminishing membership numbers. In addition to declining membership leading to reduced income for trade unions, the labour movement has also lost the support of international donors that supported trade unions during the struggle for democracy. At the same time, recent studies indicate that workers have lost trust in unions and their officials due to perceptions of "business trade unionism", as some leaders become more concerned with enriching themselves than with their members' daily workplace challenges. Many ordinary workers are now increasingly asking why they should belong to a trade union and pay their subscriptions when they are failed by their union.  Labour experts say trade unions need to urgently embark on a path of revitalisation by listening to the needs of a new generation of workers, embracing technology, and considering new forms of organising and collective action. Many of South Africa's political parties believe there was little to celebrate on May Day this year. The day, celebrated the world over, is aimed at commemorating the achievement of workers and highlighting the challenges they continue to face. In South Africa, high unemployment, the social and economic ravages caused by the COVID 19 pandemic and the need for worker unity are just some of the issues reflected on by local parties as Busi Chimombe reports...

On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: President Joe Biden headed off to an Amtrak station in Philadelphia today as part of the “Getting America Back on Track Tour.” And a renewed push for police reform is taking place on Capitol Hill. It's being led by Democratic lawmakers Karen Bass, Cory Booker and Republican Tim Scott, but several issues divide the sides, including qualified immunity, which shields officers from being personally liable. May first, also referred to as May Day or Workers Day, is a day with historical significance for the Communist and Socialist movements. Professor of Political Science at Grove City College and author of "The Devil and Karl Marx", Dr. Paul Kengor, tells us a little more about May Day, its origins and specifically what the Catholic Church did in 1955 to address Communism. A conference set to begin this Saturday, both in-person and virtually, will examine the importance of Our Lady of Guadalupe. President of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California, Dorian Llywelyn, joins to tell us about the conference and why it is being held now rather than closer to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December. Finally this evening, Pope Francis is set to kick off an initiative to pray for the end of the coronavirus pandemic. A rosary marathon will begin on Saturday at the Gregorian Chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. Official of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, Fr. Martin Esguerra, tells us about this initiative and why it is being done now. Don't miss out on the latest news and analysis from a Catholic perspective. There’s no doubt Kenneth Nkosana Makate is celebrating Workers’ Day in style following a South African Constitutional Court judge ruling that Vodacom owes him a big fat cheque for profiting from his Please-Call-Me idea for well over a decade. This brings to a close Nkosana’s 15-year legal battle with the mobile network. Or does it? In this episode of the African Tech Round-up, Tefo Mohapi and I unpack this landmark case and speculate over just how much Nkosana’s legal team might gun for in terms of compensation. We also try and determine whether the case is a good example of how “the little guy” can in fact triumph over a mighty giant, or whether Nkosana’s investor-backed victory is proof that justice might still be reserved for Africa’s well-heeled elite.
