Thanks for joining me for this bonus episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast. I wanted to talk about something that has been bothering me for some time. I feel that we have lost our way in policing in America today and the victims of crime are paying the price. When was the last time you heard someone in pop culture talking about “Victim Rights?” You certainly hear them talking about police corruption or defunding the police. But never about the thousands of innocent people who are the victims of crime every day in this country. The cops have been handcuffed and are not allowed to do their jobs, and the people who are living in the most vulnerable areas of the country are paying that price. I want to make it very clear that I support the men and women in blue who literally risk their lives every day protecting us, the Constitution, and our way of life. We must do more than wearing a t-shirt or quietly telling a cop, “Thanks for your service.” We must elect individuals who actually want to do something about the crime in this country, not give vague ideologies or theories that don't work or rehash crime-fighting strategies that never worked. We must support those who support the cops, even when it is not popular, but it's the right thing to do.On the show today I'm joined by a friend of the show, retired NYPD Detective, Vic Ferrari, and retired NYPD Captain Peter Moreno. Detective Ferrari and Captain Moreno have over forty-eight years of police experience in street patrol, investigations, and police upper management of the New York Police Department. They have seen crime fighting/reduction strategies come and go and have seen what works and doesn't work. We are going to discuss the pros and cons of Broken Windows, Data-Driven Policing sometimes called, Hot Spot Policing, and Community Oriented Policing. This show is not a bitch session, and we try our best not to be too political in this show, I wanted to enlighten you as to what actually works when it comes to fighting crime. Thanks for joining us and I welcome your input regarding this special bonus episode. If you have a better solution, we are all ears! Check out Peter's Security Company, K.H. The dialogue revolves around the inherent security risks these tools pose, especially when used by non-technical teams like marketing.Francesco shares a fascinating account of discovering a potential SQL injection in a well-known CRM system. This revelation underscores the importance of input validation and the necessity of secure defaults in any tool. The discussion also brings to light the fact that many systems do not consider these potential security risks as standard, often requiring additional licenses or configurations for basic security measures. The conversation takes an interesting turn as they discuss a new concept of a Workflow Bill of Materials™ (WBOM)—a term coined by the host, Sean Martin, for the first time. This idea extends beyond the typical focus on software bill of material security (which often focuses on source code, services, and APIs) to include a broader view of the tools and systems that teams use in their daily operations. The WBOM concept emphasizes the need for organizations to understand the associated risks of these tools and implement more secure practices.Sean and Francesco highlight the importance of threat modeling in identifying potential risks. They also discuss the challenges organizations face in ensuring security, especially when these tools are used by teams with zero security knowledge. The episode concludes with a call to action for the industry to move towards security by default and the ethical use of technology. This episode offers listeners an insightful look into the complexities of cybersecurity in the context of commonly used tools and systems, and the urgent need for a shift in perspective when it comes to securing these tools.___________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelRedefining CyberSecurity Podcast with Sean Martin, CISSP playlist:

You might've known before that not all stress is bad stress. Some amount is helpful and might cause you to progress in your career quicker! Stress is a good thing if it helps you to push yourself forward in your career. It's also one of the secrets to the success of our guest for today's episode, Parker Ashley, a senior sales professional currently serving as the VP of Americas at Darktrace.Recounting his journey to sales, Parker shares it hadn't been easy for him. He started in university wanting to be a surgeon, pursuing courses in certain branches of medicine, and was dead focused on that goal, even scoring 98 percentile in the MCAT, the admissions test for medical school in the US. Parker was determined to find a job soon after med school after spending almost all his life in the library among books (studying for a goal now totally irrelevant). But after graduation, he started working at his friend's startup to fund himself till he got a medical job. That's where all his calculations started to fall apart – when he began falling out of love with medicine and the healthcare industry as a whole. He realized he couldn't spend a significant part of his life doing something he did not enjoy. So while interviewing for medical jobs, he also worked wholeheartedly as an SDR. Even when he got the job he had been preparing for, for what felt like a lifetime, he knew he couldn't accept it, and it came as a shock to his whole family, that was expecting him to be a doctor. He needed time to assess if the medical field was for him, and he happened to have done well. The newfound interest in sales + its rewarding potential got into Parker completely. So when Darktrace found him, he was more than ready to take up the challenge. Today, Parker is not only an experienced sales representative but a leader and mentor who helps others find and succeed in their career in the industry.Sit back and listen to this episode to learn about Parker's impressive journey and the secrets and motivations behind his outstanding success!Key Talking Points: ●      Using stress to your advantage●      What the stoic philosophy teaches you about work and stress●      How to drive forward in your career with freedom of choice●      Cultivating grit Connect with Parker! ●      LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/winstonparkerashleyConnect with Alex!●      Website: www.elitelevel.co| https://www.alexalleyne.com●      Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elitelevelalex●      Twitter: https://twitter.com/elitelevelalex●      YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/elitelevelpodcast●      Learn with Alex: https://www.elitelevel.co

Chris Klaus is the founder of Internet Security Systems. Sitting in his dorm room, he put down the sci-fi book that gave him a big idea and started coding. This was the genesis of becoming the first genuinely successful cyber security company of the 1990s. I loved Chris' surprise when government labs contacted him looking for his product. They heard about this kid at Georgia Tech who figured out a way to find the security-weak point in any government or business' computer network. The most challenging question he had to answer at 19-years old was, “How much does it cost?”There is so much said these days about finding authentic demand. How to ask potential customers the right questions. Strategies around denying the product to people who seem interested. Sometimes even canceling an existing paying customer's contract. All this to prove you have authentic demand. Chris never had to deal with any of this. He built it, and they came. His biggest problem: How do you build a real company?Step 1: Own the intellectual propertyStep 2: Get the right co-founder Tom Noonan had just the right personality, contacts, and experience. Together, they blew it up.The rest is history. Investors and customers beat a path to their door. And so did IBM, who bought ISS for $1.3b. And to think it started in a dorm room.Join our conversation. It isn't just about ISS. Chris also spent over two decades and personal millions on what we now know as the Metaverse. Long, long before Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook to Meta. In our conversation, I even told Chris, “Zuck should consult with you.”Come, join us.

One of the most insidious and disturbing crimes are those committed against children and other vulnerable populations. It is so important that we understand the precursors to these crimes and what we can do to prevent them from occurring. Additionally, we need to understand what these crimes look like in our homes, in the street, and how we contact law enforcement. In Episode 64 Austin Berrier and I talk about this difficult topic, his role as a Special Agent dealing with crimes against children and how pervasive this form of criminal activity has become. This is an uncomfortable topic but one that must be addressed head on, I hope you learn something of value. Thanks for listening!
