As I strolled across the homestead, the simple act of releasing the ducks at dawn stirred a profound reflection on the spiritual and familial anchors of our lives. On the American Soul Podcast, I, Jesse Cope, invite you into this contemplation, urging us to embrace the pillars of faith and cherish every moment with our loved ones. Amidst the gardening and the routine, let's explore the richness found in daily Bible reading and consider how estrangement from these sacred texts can leave a nation vulnerable to turmoil, as seen in current protests and academic unrest. Together, we'll discover the significance of prioritizing our spouses, drawing inspiration from a family that eschewed technology for true connection—a lesson learned within the hallowed walls of the Yale Club.As we wade through today's torrent of challenges, I'm reminded of the weighty task before us: guiding the next generation with the wisdom of scripture, illuminated by the experiences of figures like Abraham Lincoln. This episode doesn't just revisit historical insights but calls us to recognize the gravity of our trials and the steadfastness of God's righteous judgments. Join me as I bless you, your family, and our nation, affirming that faith's power can indeed uplift and transform. Listen in for a heartening exchange that rekindles a commitment to the enduring values that sustain the American soul.Support the Show. The American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe
This week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott surprised many by visiting New York City — a city that he targeted last year with numerous busloads of asylum seekers. Speaking at a breakfast event at the Yale Club in Manhattan, Abbott largely minimized the city's problem while blaming the migrant crisis on President Joe Biden. NY1 political reporters Bobby Cuza, Kelly Mena and NY1 political anchor Errol Louis weighed in on Abbott's remarks, as well as several other developments in the crisis over the last week. After that, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is in a heap of trouble as he was brought in on bribery charges in a Manhattan courtroom. The senator is accused of pocketing bribes of cash and gold bars. Menendez claims he's innocent, while many top-ranking Democrats are now calling for his resignation. The “Off Topic/On Politics” team discussed the accusations, and what the senator's political future might look like. It is alleged that Dax Tejera, who worked as an executive producer for ABC News, and his widow left their young children alone in a hotel room while they went out to dinner, which is ultimately what led to Tejera's passing. According to information obtained by RadarOnline.com, Veronica Tejera, a senior producer at the Washington Post, told officials that she and her husband left their two young children in a hotel room while they went out for the evening in Manhattan. Tragically, while they were out, Veronica's husband suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away. Dax passed away on December 23; he was 37 years old. A few hours later, the New York Police Department received a report from the elite members-only Yale Club about "unattended children" on the premises, which led to the arrest of Veronica, age 33, and the filing of two counts of child endangerment charges against her. Debbie has focused her career on fundraising from corporations and foundations. This week, she tells us how she has made career decisions through relationship building and networking, which confirms my hunch that work in CFR is not so different from working with individuals. Debbie Rosenberg Bush is director of corporate and foundation relations at Columbia University School of General Studies, which she joined in March 2022 as the first person to hold this newly created position at the School. She previously served in a similar role for nine years at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Before her career in development, she worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as director of publications and was an editor at Random House, The Sciences, and Consumer Reports. Debbie has a Bachelor of Science from Yale University and is active in the governance of the Yale Club of New York City. She was also on the board of Women in Development New York. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/devdebrief/support

In the opener to episode 26 we discussed the political impact of the Great Recession and promised to soon have a guest to help explain the economic side of the story. We take our promises very seriously, so this week we bring in Hadas Thier, a regular contributor to the International Socialist Review and the author of the forthcoming book A People’s Guide to Capitalism: An Introduction to Marxist Economics. Hadas breaks down the events that led 10 years ago to the global economic crisis, from the casino capitalist shenanigans on Wall Street to the underlying problems of global overproduction that led so many investors to pour their money (and our pensions) into those Ponzi schemes in the first place. Hadas also talks to us about why mainstream economists are more interested in promoting capitalism than explaining how it works (and why it doesn’t) and how she decided after years of activism to teach herself economics in the face of the conventional wisdom that it’s too complicated for non-academics—especially non-academic women. Jen had to miss this episode so for our opener, Eric joined Danny to discuss why the Republicans have been dead set on sticking with Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court despite the mounting number of sexual assault allegations against him (and we also snuck in some sound and a short interview with Kaylin Kaupish from National Women’s Liberation during the New York City protest on October 1 outside the Yale Club). They then moved on to briefly talk about the death of notorious Chicago police torturer John Burge, and the possibility of a major Los Angeles teachers strike in the coming months. (00:00:00)- Jen admits that she cares about the royal baby despite herself. She also explains why hanging out at the Yale Club with a battle rapper shows her that bucket lists are stupid. Crash! The U.S. tort system provides civil redress when one party unfairly harms another. Plaintiff lawyers represent clients who allegedly suffered physical, emotional, and economic injuries as the result of somebody else's negligent or intentional action. Despite the alleged harms, in the vehicle collision world, the injured rarely file lawsuits and trials almost never happen. In this episode, we talk to Tricia Dennis, a graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Law. She's been a personal injury attorney in Chattanooga, TN for almost 30 years. While she's become extremely successful in her solo practice specializing in vehicle collisions, she provides a sobering look at how small law firm economics impact new and experienced practitioners. From dealing with sexist attorneys to corralling tough clients, Tricia reveals several challenges she's faced in her career. She walks us through client intake, negotiations, and settlement from a plaintiff lawyer's perspective. By the end of the interview, listeners understand that, more than anything, Tricia is a small business owner who helps her clients navigate an insurance maze.
