Monday morning live with Natasa Denman featuring one of her insightful authors, Pamm Millage. For decades, Pamm Millage has dedicated herself to exploring and applying the fundamental principles of soul evolution. By integrating the science of the mind with divinely inspired hypnosis, soul psychology, and energy transmutation, she ventures into the unseen realms of human existence—from birth to death and beyond. Pamm upholds the ageless wisdom of past masters, emphasizing that the soul acts as a bridge between our conscious mind and higher dimensions, embodying our innate, magnificent connection to pure consciousness. Recognizing that 90% of human behavior originates from the unconscious mind—irrational and easily malleable—she advocates for consciously employing an ideal spiritual blueprint to effectively command the unconscious mind. Pamm's mission with ‘ASTRAL' is clear: to empower readers to navigate our chaotic world with wisdom and thrive, thereby positively impacting not only their own lives but also the wellbeing of our planet. Three Key Takeaways 1. EMPOWERMENT THROUGH ENLIGHTENMENT: ‘ASTRAL' provides practical tools and insights to help readers harness, align and integrate the power of their superconscious, conscious and unconscious minds. By understanding and activating the ageless wisdom and interplay between these aspects of consciousness, readers can actively shape their lives, overcome challenges, and manifest their true desires. 2. NAVIGATING CHAOS WITH WISDOM AND GRACE: In a world filled with uncertainty and turbulence, ‘ASTRAL' offers a roadmap for navigating life with wisdom, clarity and grace. It emphasises the importance of soul evolution and self-realisation, guiding readers to find inner peace and stability amidst external chaos. 3. THE CORRESPONDING IMPACT ON GLOBAL WELL-BEING: ‘ASTRAL' underscores the interconnectedness of individual transformation and global well-being. By elevating their consciousness and making positive changes in their lives, readers can contribute to the collective harmony and health of our planet, highlighting the profound impact of personal evolution on the broader world. Franklin Sirmans and Jason Seife on Critique as Collaboration, Becoming Friends with Your Critics, The Cultural Responsibility of Museums, and Colorblindness as an Artist Recording from Miami, Podcast Noor is back with another panel, between an Artist and an Art Critic/Curator; and we're here to talk Critique as Collaboration. When I asked previous Podcast Noor guests, Painter Jordan Casteel and former Gallery Director Sarah Hoover, who I need to sit down with in Miami, They both enthusiastically responded with the same name: Franklin Sirmans. Franklin Sirmans is an art critic, a writer, a curator - and he's also the Director of one of the coolest art museums in the country: Miami's Pérez Art Museum, also known as PAMM. And since this storytelling session would be taking place at PAMM, I asked Franklin if he would be down to be in-conversation with one of the artists showing at the museum, someone who he thinks would be great for our Podcast Noor listeners. He responded without hesitation: Jason Seife.  Jason Seife is an interdisciplinary Miami-based artist, effortlessly weaving his beloved Cuban and Syrian heritage into the intersection of Fine Arts and Graphic Design. He's worked with some of the largest names in the music business including Kanye West, Pharrell Wiliams, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj, designing everything from album artwork to jewelry to merchandise. In his newest body of work, titled "Coming to Fruition" Jason references old Persian carpets, centering his Middle Eastern heritage and the intricate details found in mosques and traditional Islamic art.   PS: Stay till the end to hear a special guest question from my little brother, Yaseen; really the best question of the interview! After a short break (life gets in the way sometimes!) we're excited to dive into Ta-Nehisi Coates' “Between the World and Me.” This National Book Award winning-novel is short but packs a punch. Written as a letter to his son and inspired by James Baldwin's “The Fire Next Time,” Coates writes about what it means to be Black in America. He weaves the personal anecdotes and stories into life lessons for his son as well as personal reflections we can all learn from. For this discussion, we are joined by Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) Director Franklin Sirmans and we touch upon what role education plays in our biases, reflect on what we learn at school versus what we don't, the humanist approach of museums, and more. Alexa pairs the wine with La Fête Blanc du Blanc, gifted by the amazing Ray Sholes @theroyalvines, certified sommelier and wine geek. PAMM artists mentioned in this episode: Leandro Erlich, Virginia Jaramillo, Firelei Báez, Bisa Butler, John William Bailly, Alfredo Jaar, Teresita Fernandez, Calida Rawles, Gary Simmons, and Antonia Wright. I spoke with curator, writer, art critic, and Perez Art Museum Miami's (PAMM) director Franklin Sirmans about the importance of deep, layered cultural representation - one that goes beyond optics and into every fiber of his work. Previously Franklin served as department head and curator of contemporary art at LACMA, as well as the Artistic Director of the 2014 Prospect New Orleans biennial. He was also the curator of modern and contemporary art at the Menil Collection in Houston and before that a curatorial advisor at MoMA PS1 and a lecturer at Princeton University and Maryland Institute College of Art. He is the 2007 recipient of the David C. Driskell Prize presented by the High Museum. Prior to his curatorial career, Franklin was the U.S. Editor of Flash Art and Editor-in-Chief of ArtAsiaPacific magazines, Sirmans has written for several journals and newspapers on art and culture, including NYT, Art in America, ArtNews, VIBE, and Essence Magazine. For Sirmans, it's about addressing the community at every level so that communities of color feel like they are being included authentically and seeing themselves represented and engaged from the work that hangs on the walls to the programming behind it.

Pamm Hanson As a woman aging in this American culture, I find myself committed to painting images I see in the mirror as I scrutinize and watch my body change.  My work ranges from the very small (1in x 2in) to the very large (6ft x 15ft) – much like the range of my perception as I look at my body and my visage.  This has led me to my current investigation of the multiplicity of self, including the myths and archetypes that are deep in women's bodies and souls.   In 2008 I received my MFA (with honors) from the Vermont Studio Center/Johnson State College.   I also teach at Path with Art (pathwithart.org):  An arts organization that provides art education to adults in recovery from living unsheltered and other trauma.  This teaching humbles my own privilege and teaches me courage. I also have had a full and rich career as a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, with a MA in Psychology  (1980). pammohanson.com pammoh@gmail.com 206.604.3612   ***Head on over to Creatrix Compass and explore our many offerings from free inspiration to get your creative juices flowing to creativity classes to creativity coaching and life coaching for creatives.  It can all be found at: https://www.creatrixcompass.com Your donation helps us continue to spread creativity throughout the land.  Thank you! https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=2PM3V82XDS7GA  Music: Good Friends Inc by Jonathan Boyle

This week, Jason and Hilary are joined by Oakvine Recovery Center Clinical Director, Pamela Thomas. Pamm is a woman who holds many titles and has achieved many accolades, but it all started at the ripe age of 17 when she joined the military and discovered the drinking culture among soldiers. She explains why it was particularly hard for her to admit she had a problem with alcohol because in military culture, admitting you have a problem is essentially admitting you are weak, which she believes is why so many veterans struggle after transitioning into civilian life. However, her moment of clarity came after she had gotten pregnant and a close friend of hers had the sobering conversation about how Pamm had made her very uncomfortable drinking while in the early stages of pregnancy. Having had a caretaker growing up who also struggled with substance abuse, Pamm knew she had to do something to avoid passing these traits on to her children. She talks about how in order for her to get sober, she made use of counseling in her early days of recovery as treatment programs and recovery groups were not nearly as widely available as they are today. Currently, as the Clinical Director of Oakvine Recovery Center (a title she never could have imagined having), she is fulfilling her childhood dream of helping others. She talks about the difference in “picking oneself up by the bootstraps” and legitimately needing help as sometimes those “boots” don't have any tread left or are missing shoelaces, metaphorically speaking. She stresses there is no shame in admitting you have a problem and asking for help and hopes to serve as an example that you can overcome your addiction and go on to do great things in recovery.   oakvinerecoverycenter.com     For more information on the Red Songbird Foundation, please visit:   redsongbird.org   If you are interested in donating to the Red Songbird Foundation, please visit:   redsongbird.org/donate   Follow us on Instagram at: @redsongbirdfoundation     New episode every Thursday!   Check us out on YouTube every Friday! Let The Journey Begin Podcast     Please subscribe, rate, and review!   Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Teresita Fernández defies expectations. For more than 20 years, the Miami-born, Brooklyn-based artist has pushed boundaries, literally and figuratively, through her large-scale sculptures, mixed-media works, and high-profile public installations, such as the seemingly illusory “Fata Morgana” in New York City’s Madison Square Park in 2015 and cocoon-like “Autumn (... Nothing Personal)” at Harvard University last year. Her highly evocative work, at its heart, explores the many complex layers embedded in things—an idea that’s inspired, in part, from the traditional East Asian garden concept of shakkei, or “borrowed landscape,” something she discusses in-depth with Spencer Bailey on this episode of Time Sensitive. Even if Fernández’s beautiful, affecting art can be enjoyed on the surface, to fully grasp her shrewd explorations of landscape and her exquisite experimentations with materials—from ceramics to charcoal to gold to graphite—viewers must look at them closely and read them deeply. If they do, they’re likely to come away with a greater, and certainly more real, understanding of the complicated colonial history of the Americas, as well as the sublime beauty inherent in so many of the natural wonders around us. In the lead up to her mid-career retrospective, “Teresita Fernández: Elemental”—perhaps her most ambitious exhibition yet, opening at the Pérez Art Museum Miami this fall (Oct. 18, 2019, to Feb. 9, 2020)—the 51-year-old artist recently came by The Slowdown’s New York City headquarters to share stories about her life and work, from being raised by hardworking Cuban exile parents in Miami to studying for her M.F.A. at Virginia Commonwealth University in a then largely Confederate-proud Richmond. As this interview makes clear, Fernández’s life is as wonderfully layered and complex as her art.

Some might think that art descends on Miami just once a year in December for Art Week. In fact, this city has a year round cultural life. On our radio show, meet a few of the curators, gallerists and artists who animate South Florida’s year round contemporary art scene. Listen to locals in conversations about urban development and gentrification, racial and social issues, and experimental music and sound art. Featuring Gustavo Matamoros and Alba Triana (subtropics24/ArtCenter/South Florida), Anthony Spinello and Natalie Alfonso of Spinello Projects and Maria Elena Ortiz, Perez Art Museum Miami. Sound Editor Guney Ozsan | Special audio features courtesy Cara Despain, Sinisa Kukec, Mirza Haroon, Alba Triana and subtropics | Photo credits in gallery Cathy’s notes: An Miami field trip gave me the idea for this show’s theme… Four local galleries staged a progressive brunch one Sunday in late June. Mindy Solomon, Spinello Projects, Emerson Dorsch and RedDot welcomed a steady flow of visitors to experience four unique exhibitions in the Little Haiti and Little River Arts Districts. Riffing on the Sunday brunch concept, each gallery offered a special dish simultaneously over from 11am to 3pm. Their goal? To highlight their exhibitions and invite visitors to linger for conversations about art. One of those conversations will give you an idea of the experience. I recorded with gallerist Anthony Spinello and gallery manager Natalie Alfonso inside the exhibition titled Mere Façade. The word ‘façade’ has a couple of meanings that come into play: one is the face of a building, the side that looks onto a street or open space. Façade also refers to an outward appearance that conceals something unpleasant or insubstantial. From outside Miami looking in, the word might make you think about the superficial side of this city… Another exhibition that opened this summer invites visitors to play dominoes. Curator Maria Elena Ortiz brought the show about a favorite pastime in Miami—to the Perez Art Museum. In a curatorial collaboration with Arden Sherman of the Hunter College Gallery in New York, Maria Elena shows us that there’s a lot more to dominoes than meets the eye. Also at PAMM, curator Diana Nawi invited London-based artist Haroon Mirza to create an immersive sound experience in the museum’s double-height gallery. You enter a darkened project space to experience A C I D GU E S T. A specialized technical system transmits an electrical current through speakers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) activated by noise frequencies. sound and light experience based on a concrete poem he wrote. A C I D G E S T takes its name from the phrase “acid test”, (refering to the parties held in the 1960’s where groups of people would come together to legally experiment with LSD). The last segment of our show features subtropics, the experimental music and sound art biennial at ArtCenter/SouthFlorida organized by sound artist Gustavo Matamoros. Alba Triana tells the story behind her sound and light installation Microcosmos and Gustavo introduces sound art and experimental music performances by David Dunn, Olivia Block, Carles Santos and Abbey Rader.

No te piden mucho.
