You can feel young again by making simple changes that work for you.   Howie Jacobson, PhD is co-author of Whole with T. Colin Campbell and Proteinaholic with Dr. Garth Davis. He also knows small changes can have a massive impact.   Howie felt like an old man by the time he was 35. His health was beginning to decline as his blood pressure and cholesterol climbed ever higher.   He felt like a genetic time bomb was about to explode given his family's poor health history. He feared that it could go off at any moment and his time would be up.   Tired of living with a dark cloud hanging overhead, he vowed to change what he could. And that began by overhauling his diet.   The changes not only restored his health but turned back the hands of time and continue to prevent the genetic time bomb from going off.   Howie joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to share his inspirational long and winding journey to health. Like many of us, there were plenty of stumbles along the way. But in the end he persevered. Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.   Are you having a hard time determining if you have too much or too little protein in your diet? Too much protein means you might be dealing with potential disease risks, while too little protein presents the possible risk of changes to healthspan. Either way, the literature is often confusing and inconclusive and often leaves people with more questions than answers.      I’m joined today by Dr. Garth Davis, a bariatric surgeon, and author of Proteinaholic. Dr. Davis is an active member of the protein-based community and he has joined me to talk about the possible dangers of dietary protein and to share evidence-based truths about protein and how it might be affecting your health. We dive deep into the specifics of meta-analysis and epidemiology, how red meat really affects overall health, and the points of any study that you need to understand before accepting or rejecting its findings. We also take a look at the new lab-grown and plant-based meat movement that is quickly gaining popularity.     Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is animal protein — does it really affect your overall health and what are the actual risks of cancer for red meat eaters?  [3:57] Dr. Davis shares a classic example of the disconnect between obesity and protein that he regularly experiences in his work.  [5:47] Challenges that surface when trying to study the effects of protein on cancer, including correlations and meta-analysis in epidemiology.  [11:02] Understanding the protein-inclusive diets of blue zone populations and the misunderstandings that are often associated with mechanisms of action.  [17:12] A strong argument comes from a combination of high mechanistic action, high rates of epidemiological evidence, and meta-analysis, but what comes after that? Howard Jacobson, PhD, is Chief of Behavioral Science (aka Chief Habit Nerd) at WellStart Health. He’s the host of the wildly popular (in his home) Plant Yourself Podcast. Howard is co-author, with Josh LaJaunie, of Sick to Fit, and contributing author to T. Colin Campbell, PhD’s WHOLE: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, and Garth Davis, MD’s Proteinaholic. His work has also been featured in Fast Company and the Harvard Business Review online. Howard is lead instructor at the WellStart Health Coaching Academy, and co-author of the Coaching for Performance chapter of the American Management Association’s Book of Knowledge. In his free time, Howard runs, practices Russian martial arts, gardens, and plays far-too-competitive Ultimate Frisbee. Howard earned his BA from Princeton University, and his MPH and PhD from Temple University. He lives in Pittsboro, North Carolina with his wife, and sometimes with his adult children. (Fly, kids, fly!) Key Points from the Episode with Howard Jacobson: As Howard went through his career, he had a feeling that making money meant he was selling out, so he does a lot of things for free. His podcast, Plant Yourself, has a huge following, and shares the vegan lifestyle with thousands of listeners. WellStart Health - a digital platform and care team to reverse chronic disease. Can you use behavior change to lead to better health outcomes and get people to put those new habits into their lives in a meaningful and sustainable way. Millions of people have tried and failed to do better, and Howard uses a really brilliant analogy to illustrate why. If a six year old who has never played the piano before sat down to play a complex concerto, they will fail. This isn’t surprising. Yet we are essentially doing that with totally different ways to eat where we go in without clear knowledge, guidance or resources and don’t seem to have the same understanding when we struggle. Instead, we go to a place of frustration and a mentality of, “This will never work for me. It’s too hard.” In Western society, we carry trauma and push ourselves to just move on, which really means the trauma stays within us, stuck there. In other cultures throughout time, there were processes to move through trauma, whether ceremonies, rights of passage or forms of therapy so people could truly move on. We don’t do that, and the trauma continues to cost us as time goes on, and it compounds with each successive trauma. Howard has chosen to face his rather than deny them, and that’s part of the work they do at WellStart. Howard went into a podcast episode he did during a water fast he was on, which lead him down a mental path that came from releasing a lot of inhibitions as he faced lots of feelings. The episode went through a lot of thoughts around his father, and losing his father to cancer when Howard was just 24 years old. He said he was really angry about it, which came from losing his dad to what he saw as a disease of ignorance. He realized this after digging into the research when his father was sick to find a way to save his life. What he learned was that there are many diet-based changes that could have prevented and could help fight the cancer. Lacking that knowledge is the driver of this feeling of the loss being unnecessary and due to ignorance. The knowledge was out there, but it was relegated to a very small academic world rather than the norms of the world at large. While he was angry about the loss of his father, he used the time to reflect on who his father was, what he meant to Howard, and the ways his father would have grown and improved as a person had he had the chance to. We have all lost people too soon. We have all seen towering figures shrivel and die unnecessarily, as Howard put it. And it’s been decades since his father died, so we shouldn’t still be able to say that this is still happening from the same ignorance. He would like to see all doctors trained in lifestyle medicine, which, essentially, none of them are today. And the doctors should be upset about this situation. We need to get this knowledge to a place where it’s accessible to all, not just people in the small group who know today, or to those who live with access to the tools you may need, like a Whole Foods store. He asked really pressing questions around the sustainability of what we are doing in healthcare and agriculture/the environment. Things have to change, but will they change because we change them before it's too late or will it change because it comes crashing down and we have no choice. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Jim Morris Hicks about the 4Leaf Program, achieving vibrant health and sustainability for our planet. Back in 2002, after becoming curious about our “optimal diet,” Jim began to study what we eat from a global perspective and discovered many startling issues and opportunities along the way. In addition to an MBA and a BS in Industrial Engineering, he holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has also been a member of the board of directors since 2012. Having concluded that our food choices hold the key to the sustainability of our civilization, he has made this his #1 priority, exploring all avenues for influencing humans everywhere to move back to the natural plant-based diet for our species. Today we talk to Jim about his book The 4Leaf Guide To Vibrant Health, Using The Power Of Food To Heal Ourselves and Our Planet. We discuss how to easily implement the 4leaf guide and the effects a plant-based diet has on our health. We touch on how to get more people understanding the urgency of our planet’s future and how some of the small things we do everyday may not be enough.   In this episode we discuss: Getting into the White House 4leaf Survey 80% WFPB Doctors Heal Thyself, Then Others Sustainability of our ecosystem Who can this planet support and for how long? Getting people to understand Recycling is not enough Big environmental groups who ignore the impact of our food choices when it comes to climate change Actionable tips to start with today   Links to things we mentioned: Jim’s , ,  by Kerry Graff M.D. and J. Hope became aware of the obesity autopsy after reading an article claiming it to be fat shaming. Of course we had to take an opportunity to locate and view the autopsy to see how the show presented the data and how the issue of obesity was addressed. We were pleased to see that rather than shaming the person they provided evidence regarding excessive weight gain and internal organs. It was appalling to see how her weight affected nearly all of her organs including her liver and lungs. Dr. Howard Jacobson, who we've had on the show before, and Josh LaJaunie, formerly obese man turned ultra marathon runner, were gracious enough to chat with us about the obesity autopsy. They also discussed taking the steps and overcoming obstacles to get over our own physical hold ups and start hitting the pavement again. It's inspired Hope and I both to jump back on the wagon and we know it will push you to review your physical state and make a change today. In this episode of “Hey Plant Trainers” we don’t answer a listener’s question, this one’s a little bit different. Adam dives into a really important question that many people don’t seem to think about enough: “do doctors have a purpose?”   Over the past few weeks Adam has been wondering if Doctors do really have a purpose. We know what you’re thinking…of course they do. We agree they do have a purpose, but is it clearly defined? Do doctors really know what they’re doing when a patient walks into their office? Is diagnosing a patient just a guessing game? For some reason doctors are looked up to by almost everyone and it seems that whatever the doctor says, the patient follows. When it comes to nutritional advice…is that ok? Adam gets into this very topic and challenges you to leave your thoughts and comments below in the show notes. So what do you think…do doctors have a purpose?   Links to things we mentioned: Reversing Heart Disease with Dr. Joel Kahn – How Not To Die with Michael Greger M.D. – Proteinaholic with Dr. Garth Davis –   Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!                   Do you want to create lifelong healthy eating habits for you or your family? We took some time off from the interviews this episode to banter about a few things that got under our skin the past couple of weeks. We discussed an article that lists cheese, eggs, and dairy yogurt as healthy fats, “lab grown”/cultured meat, people spreading bad science online, and more. Things get a bit silly from the start, you’ve been warned. CONTEST WINNER There were quite a few entries into the contest for the signed copy of Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis. We’d like to thank everyone who threw their hat into the ring but there can only be one winner: Brian Burkhart! We’ll be in touch soon to get your info! Don’t worry if you didn’t win, this won’t be the last contest from us. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."- Mark Twain WATCH OUT FOR LIES The “what grinds our gears” episode started out look at the study posted by a fellow Facebook user. The study, Mortality in vegetarians and comparable nonvegetarians in the United Kingdom, was the focus of a post that started as “Got meat? Or do you avoid it because you think being a vegetarian will increase your life span? A large study found no difference in all cause mortality between them. Rut ro!...” We found this alarming as the study didn’t really say what this person was claiming, the region and sample size was low regarding the claim, and even the conclusion was ignored by the poster. Given that the person hails themselves as a health professional, many would follow his lead without taking time to understand the lack in value of the study and/or his interpretation of the abstract. Once you managed to separate our face from our palms the next article, 10 High-Fat Foods That Are Actually Super Healthy, wasn’t quite as bad since it atleast had some nuggets of truth. What struck us was claiming cheese, eggs, fish, and dairy as “super healthy”. Given what we know about the links in heart disease, cancer, etc. these food are far from “super healthy”. We covered a few alternatives to the healthy claims the article made. However, we point out it’s important to be aware of who writes an article as well as how it’s written. For example, “Cheese, like other high-fat dairy products, also contains powerful fatty acids that have been linked to all sorts of benefits, including reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.” is read as one statement that is really a collection of partial truths. However, if you remove the first part you end up with the full truth, “powerful fatty acids that have been linked to all sorts of benefits, including reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.” Now, we know none of you eat fast food… right? Ok, good. As we dove into a level of absurdity, you may have heard about Chick-fil-a stating, in regards to a healthy diet:   “...Eat smaller meals (like our 8-count pack of grilled nuggets) every three to four hours” Not to mention this would cost a person $700 a month, it would also give you (per serving): 3g of fat (1g saturated) 70mg of cholesterol 0g of fiber 23g of protein (listen to our interview with Dr. Davis to hear about protein) 530mg of sodium They claim health benefits because of the low calories. However, as we’ve said before, on a whole foods plant based diet calories aren’t an issue. Sounds like a better and healthier plan that 8 chicken nuggets every 3 to 4 hours. Digging out of a grease filled bag we talked about a recent hot topic, being cultured or “lab grown” meat. If a few of the social media groups this has come up as either a “would you” or “is this vegan”. Given that the product is still meat we know the negative baggage that comes along with animal products. One argument is this would be less damaging to the environment since it wouldn’t require livestock. This topic did spark some debate between Hope and David about if the effort is well spent. Hope feels like is a valuable stepping stone to reduce/end a large portion of animal cruelty and possible turning more to a plant based diet. However, David feels the time and money spent could go toward a vegetable replacement and ending the cruelty altogether. We’d like to know your thoughts on this one. You can contact us or post to our Facebook or Twitter. We covered a lot in this episode. Give it a listen, subscribe, and feel free to contact us with your questions or comments. Your hosts at Curiously Veg Radio got a chance to talk with Dr. Garth Davis about his ground-breaking new book, Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession With Meat Is Killing Us And What We Can Do About It. We spoke about the role nutrition plays in a healthy lifestyle, evaluating research, and his own experience with changing his perspective on health and weight loss. Why in the heck do we focus so much on protein? Won’t I get a protein deficiency if I don’t eat meat? What about gains tho?  Shouldn’t we buy foods that contains lots of protein? It’s carbs that make us fat, right? Butter is healthy because Time Magazine said so, and aren’t they experts? We have all asked these questions when deciding how to eat to be healthy and build muscle. It’s confusing and there seems to be a new study or article out everyday that tells us what is the best way to eat, so how in the world can someone tell what is correct and what is profit-driven sensationalism? You can start with Dr. Davis, because he will open your eyes to what’s really going on and gives key advice on what is a healthy lifestyle. In his book, Dr. Davis takes you on his personal journey of the physician becoming the patient - physician heal thyself if you will. He compiles all he learned, research, and findings in a guide that illustrates why we are sick and becoming fatter every year.  It is an easy to understand synopsis of what is really going on with our health and how we can take control back. The bonus material offered on Proteinaholic.com is a valuable resource for starting a healthy lifestyle. Both your hosts wishes that the guides and recipes had been around when they started their plant-based journey! Dr. Davis said it best with “For doctors to fail to inform patients of the gentlest, safest, most beneficial action they can take to protect their own health is nothing more than criminal negligence.” So, hunker down and get ready for an awesome interview! Dr. Garth Davis is a fully recovered proteinaholic, Ironman, currently the medical director of the Davis Clinic at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, and starred on the hit TLC show Big Medicine.Tid Bits:Hope wanted to clarify ketosis because she felt that she didn’t explain it well enough. Ketones are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy when there isn’t adequate carbohydrates available to equip the body with glucose for energy or if your body can't use glucose (or blood sugar) properly. The body becomes acidic (acidosis) which promotes inflammation. Yes, you will lose weight initially, but it is not sustainable and can cause serious health issues. Integrative practitioners are physicians that have receive additional education in nutrition, fitness, and natural medicine.
