Jennifer Tsang is an ICF Leadership Coach who partners with executives, leaders & everyday people to build more consciousness into how they lead their teams and most importantly, themselves. She believes that leadership is an inside out approach. As someone who has worked on her own personal development and self-leadership for over 15 years, she started her coaching practice in 2020 to help others discover how to lead themselves and grow professionally and personally. Today, Jennifer offers a wide variety of programs and services – from individual coaching, to group and team coaching, mindfulness programs and facilitated group conversations. Nola Simon is a hybrid/remote futurist, approaching the strategy of hybrid or remote work with a futurist perspective. She is the founder of Nola Simon Advisory, a boutique consultancy and the host of a future of work podcast, The Janus Oasis. Nola has worked some version of hybrid or remote for over 10 years, pioneering work from home for her team. Her expertise in fine tuning strategy, crafting compelling narratives and operationalizing hybrid/remote was developed far before the pandemic. She's seen the downsides of alternate ways of working too – overwork led to a life-threatening car crash due to undiagnosed pneumonia. Her lung collapsed while she was at the wheel, and she hit a fully loaded cement hauler. Shifting to 100% remote work meant that she lost access to the office building she worked in for 16 years so she understands the impact to belonging, employee engagement and retention. Nola believes the secret to hybrid work is intention. Communication matters - it requires listening, asking great questions, establishing trust and psychological safety. Flexibility and a willingness to experiment and adjust course is the way to build effective culture and process. Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to implement hybrid work and engage employees. The future of work will be about integrating work into life. Flexibility is essential to work/life integration - happier and healthier employees are key to successful companies. In today's episode of the In the Lead Show, I have a conversation with Shari Foos, founder of the Narrative Method. We're all susceptible to a certain amount of influence that can negatively shift our self-perspective and our perspective of dissimilar cultures and people both near and far. Whether those influences come from our own community, popular culture, or artificial intelligence online, there's little we can do to avoid it. Shari's passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away participants' false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Through the modality of storytelling and a practice called “relational mindfulness,” participants are able to develop radical empathy, compassion, and understanding for those around them. But life said, “No, go this way….” So, as a University of Kansas sophomore, Carol Scott took an elective course called Child Development and turned an amazing corner in her life. Now, as a 2018 TEDx speaker and author of two books, Dr. Scott is a coach, trainer, and keynoter who teaches this truth: relationships are at the heart of all success. Her clients arrive with goals to grow--a business, a family, or a dream--and learn new strategies for greater success in all of their endeavors. Her first career as a nationally respected thought leader in the U.S. systems for early care and education began with that surprise change to a BA in Child Development. And then she added a BA in Anthropology, an MA in Early Childhood Education, and a PhD in Developmental Psychology, all from her beloved University of Kansas. Several influential positions in the nonprofit, education, and government policy worlds took all that education into practice that helped shape her profession. Today, that first career is the foundation for an astonishing second act. The trigger: While earning her doctorate, Carol ran head-long and heart-first into her childhood trauma. Working with a shrink, rather than being one, she faced the impacts on her professional and personal lives of a “score” of 7 from a list of 10 Adverse Childhood Experiences, a research-based measure of trauma. Her observations of children in the natural habitat of a teaching preschool sparked the idea for a new model for successful adult relationships. Adding her expertise in early brain development, Carol created a unique approach that revolutionizes everything from business management, to parenting, to romance. Dr. Scott's first book, Just Be Your S.E.L.F.--Your Guide to Improving Any Relationship, provides her basic framework and many specific tools for becoming a Self-governed, Ego-aware person who is Leading in their life and Free of self-imposed barriers--a S.E.L.F. In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Debbie Cohen and Kate Roeske-Zummer and we explored their five practices of leading with awareness, choice & courage. During our conversation, we got on the subject of trust. I believe that trust absolutely starts with self. As someone who has been around the block, I've seen so many times where we want to point fingers… We want to try and reorganize the business… We want to implement innovation and change at a very rapid pace. When we do this people are just stuck saying/feeling, “I'm not even able to be centered where I'm at, and now you're asking me to do all this?”  This happens because we're just constantly reacting. It's almost like we look at people like they're objects or they're like in a game that we can just kind of like move. In terms of that re-centering piece, that's where we have the ability to come back to self. Anytime you're feeling mistrust or unsafe, or you're feeling reactive, how do you come back to self? “Self” is what creates that space to create more choices, better decisions, connection, or empathy. I feel like we're almost afraid of “self” and it's so key and it's so valuable. I'm happy to see that these ladies are doing this work because I think it's one of the big key missing pieces in leadership.  Leadership isn't always about controlling your outputs and how you impact others.  It starts with you first. If you can't lead within yourself, you're not going to be able to lead others effectively. KATE ROESKE-ZUMMER knows vulnerability-based leadership creates stronger relationships, more authentic connections and better results. As an account manager at Ogilvy & Mather, Kate recognized the power in distributing responsibility to the people on her team. She experienced first-hand that the whole of a team really is greater than the sum of its parts. DEBBIE COHEN's beliefs about human potential are grounded in decades of work with humans big and small. Her career began as a teacher and leader of early childhood education programs at Stanford University and the USGS. This era shaped her thinking about how humans grow and evolve, and the role environments play. She moved on, applying these ideas to building strategies with companies seeking to attract and retain key talent through work/life initiatives. This work heightened her awareness of systemic roadblocks and the impact they have on people and productivity. Shifting from consulting to internal work, Debbie began leading work/life for Time Warner just after the infamous AOL/Time Warner merger. She became known for getting groups who did not typically work well together to a place of shared focus and effort. This ignited a bigger shift into executive leadership roles in HR at Time Warner, Razorfish, Mozilla, and First Look LLC. The impact of Debbie's work was recognized in a case study released by Harvard Business Publishing, People Operations at Mozilla Corporation: Scaling a Peer-to-Peer Global Community, which received the 2013 Berkeley-Haas...

Being highly sensitive is not a disorder or a personality trait. It's literally how you are born. About 20-30% of people are classified as highly sensitive, which means their nervous system is more sensitive than most people. Since the world is geared toward the other 80%, often times highly sensitive people can be classified as sensitive or shy or aloof, when in reality they process the world much differently. In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I talk to a fellow HSP, Heather Dominick all about what it means to be Highly Sensitive and the things you can do to care for yourself and use this as a strength, not a weakness. In fact, I would argue that Highly Sensitive People make great leaders and if they can use their strengths as tools and care for themselves, they can be impactful and inspiring. Show highlights High sensitivity is not a personality trait or a disorder. Highly Sensitive People might need to do things differently. Strengths of an HSP are: Empathy, listening, connection and intuition. Understand if you are someone who hides, pushes or combo platters. Understand how to care for yourself as an HSP. This is a question I encourage every person listening to the show to ponder. Over the years, I've noticed that the human element of business & leadership gets lost. We get really focused on the results, the outcomes, the strategy, the revenue that we often forget about the people behind those results. I find this usually happens because it can be easier to focus on things we feel like we can control. When we do not have the courage to see ourselves & others as fully human, we create toxic workplaces and reinforce the trauma & stories. What if we could see that person who drives you crazy as human? What if you were able to see that difficult person on your team/in your life as fully human? Jennifer Tsang is an ICF Leadership Coach who partners with executives, leaders & everyday people to build more consciousness into how they lead their teams and most importantly, themselves. She believes that leadership is an inside out approach. As someone who has worked on her own personal development and self-leadership for over 15 years, she started her coaching practice in 2020 to help others discover how to lead themselves and grow professionally and personally. Today, Jennifer offers a wide variety of programs and services – from individual coaching, to group and team coaching, mindfulness programs and facilitated group conversations. Show highlights We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Life is always in movement. When we can move with the feeling of life, we can live a richer experience. Always have a beginner's mind. Reality that you experience is only through your lens. Pay attention to all your stories and understand how that might be shaping your beliefs, views, or biases. We are all teachers of something. What we choose to teach is up to us. The root of all suffering is when we seek external validation. It takes an immense amount of courage to be fully human. What comes up when you think of it? Do you believe it can be one of your most powerful tools? In this week's episode the In the Lead Show, I talk to Jordan Brown, Mental Health Advocate, about the positives and potential downsides to obsession. Obsession can be a powerful tool used by leaders and it's something that we need to be mindful of. As with most things, I see it as a continuum. Things in and of themselves are not good or bad. They are thoughts, ideas, feelings, personality traits of emotions that can be used in powerful ways, if we are in balance and aware of them. When we aren't aware, it can start to inch closer to be a hindrance rather than a skill. Jordan Brown is a mental health advocate, writer, and entrepreneur. He's been writing and building online communities to make mental health more accessible and meaningful since 2016. He's the founder of The Mental Health Update, which empowers values-driven individuals and organizations through relatable mental health content, SEO, and consulting.  Formally trained as a social worker, Jordan considers his mental health struggles and open-heart surgery the greatest, most life-affirming lessons of all. Innovation & Business Agility with Kate Arms

Are you a recovering serious person who wants to be playful? In this weeks episode of the In the Lead Show, I talk to Kate Arms, Agile Coach. In this conversation we explore embodiment and neuroscience and how that impacts business agility and innovation. Kate says we can be really effective if we can integrate the body and the mind to create better outcomes, to be more innovative and more agile as a business. Key Takeaways: Business agility is all about pivoting. You cannot pivot if you're not centered where you are. To be innovative and to have the ability to be agile requires nuance. Nuance in thoughts, nuance in feelings, nuance in understanding where you are. If you are able to pivot, in collaboration with others who can pivot, then you have the ability to move more quickly. Space between where we are and where we want to be requires being comfortable with the discomfort. How mindful movement practices and allowing your body to respond can help you embrace & understand your body in a more powerful ways. Kate Arms has spent the last 35 years studying how creative and sensitive people create successful organizations that honor and respect the inner lives of the diverse people who run them. Along the way, she has raised four kids, written four books, started two podcasts, and drunk an enormous amount of coffee. How Gratitude Makes You a Better Leader with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

Gratitude: During the Thanksgiving holiday, many of us in the U.S. will be thinking about gratitude & give thanks for what we have in our lives. But, what does gratitude really mean? How do you think about gratitude? For me, gratitude is more than something we think about once a year, or more than just some cliches we write inside of a journal. Instead, it can be used as a tool to learn from our experiences & to develop deep appreciation for the things we have been through in our lives. I use it as a daily practice to help me reflect & ground myself in the present moment. I use it as a way to honor the tools I have acquired, the lessons I have learned & give thanks to all of the things I have faced in order to make me a whole, resource & capable person. Gratitude isn't just something that we do, it's something that we are. Great leaders who practice gratitude are shown to be more successful in leading themselves & their teams. People want to work for humble leaders who appreciate them & value who they are as a whole person. This time of year is a great reminder for us to pause & reflect on our lives & the impact we are making each day. If you don't have a gratitude practice, now would be a great time to start. I challenge you to re-imagine gratitude & to find a practice you can develop each day to make you a better parent, educator, leader & citizen of this planet. Conflict: I know what you're probably thinking, you handle conflict well, right? Or, you might be thinking, I try to avoid conflict like the plague. Whatever your feelings are, conflict is all around us. The world is filled with conflict, discourse & resistance. We can't really escape it. If we are able to embrace conflict & get really comfortable with being uncomfortable, we might not have to run from it or try to meet it head on. Instead, can we use it as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves? I believe that a lot of conflict we experience is actually a way of teaching us exactly where we are stuck & what we still have to learn about ourselves. If we can flip it into a powerful tool to discover deeper meaning, we can enrich our lives, while leaving people whole, resourceful & capable. Managing Through Change with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

Change: Change is uncomfortable for most people. We've all been through it. At work, in our personal lives. It's a constant. We can experience a range of emotions from grief to excitement & anywhere in between. It can vary for most, but it's important to understand how to manage change effectively, especially if you're in a leadership position. It is your job to help define the 'Why' for your team and help them move through the change process, leaving them whole, resourceful and capable. We all need the time and the space to grieve change, and frankly, I don't think we do this well enough within organizations. We tend to look at change like a gender reveal party, where we develop creative ways to surprise people with the news when in reality, we need to be doing the oposite. We need to help people understand the change, give them time to process it and then help support them move through it. Change is not something that we just dump on people (or managers) & expect them to just be "flexible." In today's episode, I will explore this very important topic & use the question bank from our most recent #LeadersChat conversation on Twitter. We all have gifts. We all have talents. We all have immense value to bring to the world and I think it's important we explore with ourselves what that means to us and how we want to bring it forward. Every moment, every interaction, every action is a fingerprint and we have the ability to constantly shape ourselves and others everyday and leave our mark (or our legacy) on the world. Unconscious bias: Unconscious bias is often defined as prejudice or unsupported judgments in favor or against something or someone. I see as simply the way in which we see & experience the world around us. It's our lens. Biases as they are do not have to be a bad thing. They can help us make sense of the world and develop a better understanding of ourselves. As with anything, biases also have a shadow side and often cloud or decision making or how we choose to interact with others. Unconscious biases can have a larger shadow because we may not even be aware of those judgements or prejudices when making decisions as a leader in an organization or in laws that shape our communities. We all have bias, and the sooner we can accept this fact, the easier it becomes to see them and understand how it might be impacting everything that we do. In today's episode, Drea and I explore what unconscious bias means, the impact that it has on others and how we can start to develop more awareness around them to make decisions that have a positive impact. It's not something we just talk or write about, instead something we practice and feel. Additionally, it's a fluid experience and can mean something different from one person to the next. Superpowers: What superpowers come with being a highly sensitive person? Being highly sensitive means that you have sensory processing sensitivity where you notice subtle changes in stimuli and have deeper cognitive processing where your central nervous system is more sensitive than most. Given this, there are many superpowers that come along with this sensitivity. Understanding and identifying your superpowers as an HSP will allow you to feel more whole, resourceful and capable of bringing your gifts to the world. It will also help you come to terms with the person that you are. I know that for me, this was a difficult pill to swallow and took me many years to really come to terms with. Who wants to be different? Who wants to be deeply impacted by the people and the world around you? Who wants to feel debilitated after a long day at work? Once I began to understand what was happening to me and how I could use these as a strength, I have been able to hone them into a superpower.
