PMI survey reveals 56% of project management pros claim remote/hybrid working helps success rates

A survey from the Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) shows that more than half (56%) of project managers believe remote or hybrid working has a positive impact on project success rates. The research involving over 100 project management professionals also found that the average cost of failed projects during the last 12 months was approximately €653K - down 11% from last year's estimated cost of failed projects at €710K. Conducted by the Ireland Chapter of PMI, the survey was carried out to tie in with its annual national conference, Navigating The Next Wave, in association with EY. The event explored the next wave of project management innovation and impact and featured Dr Lolly Mancey, Anthropologist, Futurist, and Innovation Advocate as keynote speaker. The latest survey from the Ireland Chapter of PMI also revealed that remote or hybrid working was among the leading sustainability practices within the sector. The others were choosing sustainable suppliers and partners (20%), waste management practices (18%), sustainability KPIs (12%), and measurement of carbon emissions during projects (11%). On the topic of sustainability, 55% of project management professionals say it is a key factor when outlining project delivery models. Furthermore, 76% revealed that companies are more interested in sustainability compared to a year ago and over a third (35%) view it as very important in terms of managing projects. However, despite the perceived positive impact of remote or hybrid working on project success rates and sustainability efforts, some 47% of project managers said that they are expected to be in the office more now compared to a year ago. Furthermore, the research found that the biggest challenge when it comes to managing remote or hybrid teams concerns communication issues - cited by almost half (48%) of respondents. Lack of collaboration, scheduling conflicts, lack of team culture, and lack of visibility were the other leading challenges in this regard. Perhaps unsurprisingly, power skills (including communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership and strategic thinking) were deemed to be the most crucial for project managers in the future. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "Project management across Ireland is fast evolving with the ambition, scale and complexity of projects ever increasing. Project management professionals need to be able to navigate this next wave of innovation - something which we discussed at our annual conference. That means adopting workstyles and deploying technologies that enable the sector to drive success, manage costs, and support sustainability. It also means addressing any barriers and upskilling for the future, otherwise the potential to drive real impact for Ireland through ambitious projects will be lost." Jennifer Ryan, EY Ireland Transformation Delivery Business Consulting Partner, said: "EY were delighted to once again be title sponsors for the PMI National Conference. At EY, we understand that project management is on the cusp of transformational change with the introduction of technological change and new work practices. As such, we're delighted that this year's conference highlighted the transformative potential of AI, the importance of sustainability, and the future of work. At EY, we recognise that organisations and Transformation Management Offices (TMOs) are already adapting in response to these three themes, particularly as they realign the capabilities that they require to maximise the efficiency of the delivery of transformation." The Government's promise to build 250,000 completed homes a year for the next four years, coupled with a renewed focus on defence expenditure, and significant infrastructure projects like the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, are all putting increased pressure on the construction industry.    But experts say, Australia does not have enough construction workers to meet Labor's election promise to boost housing supply. The need for strategic workforce development and a focus on project management practices is now more urgent than ever to ensure efficient resource allocation, mitigate risks, and guarantee timely project delivery across all sectors. Project Management Institute (PMI), Global director construction and Vice President APAC, Ben Breen joins us on TAD to help us discuss skills shortages and how they can be overcome in the built environment. This podcast is brought to you in association with Moddex, proud sponsors of our 2024 Sustainability series of podcasts.

Welcome to the 20-episode run of the All-Hazards Project Management series of the People, Process, Progress podcast.Since I was seventeen, I've been involved in public safety, emergency medicine, and planning events or incident responses. Across all these roles, one truth has stood out: effective planning connects them all. In public safety, it's about saving lives and protecting property—but that only works when teams share a process and operate efficiently. In emergency medicine, triage and crisis standards guide us to do the greatest good for the greatest number. And in project management, it's about turning an idea into reality. In every one of these fields, people are the constant. To stay safe, deliver care, and get results, those people must work a shared process. The progress we make depends on both. That's where this All-Hazards Project Management series comes in.This series is built from the field and the front lines. I've used elements of what you'll hear in these episodes to train fire department leaders in project management and to share public safety insights with members of the Project Management Institute (PMI). These are the practical lessons that bridge emergency response and organizational execution. Each episode blends:People – who we lead and how we support them,Process – the systems and structures that keep us aligned,Progress – the measurable outcomes that prove we're moving forward. We'll connect project management frameworks to the Incident Command System (ICS), highlight real-world parallels, and provide tools you can apply immediately. You'll also get a clear call to action in every episode to drive results, not just reflection. If you're ready to lead in uncertainty, plan with precision, and deliver under pressure—this series is for you.Let's lead with clarity, operate with purpose, and progress together. I'll see you next week.

The Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) has announced that it is prioritising social good with a partnership with the Irish Emergency Alliance. Established in 2018 and active in 95 of the world's poorest countries, the Irish Emergency Alliance aims to help, save and rebuild the lives of those affected by major emergencies across the globe. As well as a growing alliance - which currently includes ActionAid, Christian Aid, Plan International, Self Help Africa, Tearfund Ireland, Trócaire and World Vision - it has responded to five catastrophic emergencies and raised over €6.75 million. Helping this effort, the Ireland Chapter of PMI encourages its chapters across the world to undertake social good, locally and internationally. It promotes the great work of the Irish Emergency Alliance, provides expert volunteer resources to support its mission, and partakes in fundraising events for the organisation. As part of this, the Irish Emergency Alliance is one of the first charities in Europe to be recognised as part of Project Managers Without Borders (PMWB), a worldwide initiative by PMI which partners project managers with not-for-profit and non-government organisations to affect change and empower communities. The partnership also enables the Irish Emergency Alliance to access volunteers and project managers within the Ireland Chapter of PMI who have domain knowledge in other areas such as finance, IT and marketing. To support the partnership and its own efforts in the area of social good, the Ireland Chapter of PMI has also recently appointed a new Director of Social Good, Carlos Mandolesi. He will be responsible for overseeing its volunteering activities and expanding its charity partnerships. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "Our aim is to engage people, embrace social good, and elevate the impact of the project management profession - and there is no greater impact than helping those in need. The work that the Irish Emergency Alliance does is nothing short of incredible and it is an honour to be able to get involved in and support what they do. From us donating the proceeds of one of our ticketed events to the Irish Emergency Alliance to them getting involved in our National Project Awards, it's all about collaborating and making a difference together." Brian Casey, Executive Director of the Irish Emergency Alliance, added: "We want to do even more for communities and people whose lives have been devastated by emergencies, be that raising money or having people on the ground. As a small membership organisation, we can only do that with the help of our partners, including the Ireland Chapter of PMI. By tapping into the enormous potential that a shared response unleashes, we have been able to - and hope to continue to - react with agility, work with agencies, and provide much-needed emergency support." The Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) has announced that it is launching a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation Hub. Developed to serve as a central hub of AI expertise and education, it will equip the project management profession with the knowledge and skills to integrate AI technologies across their organisations. By enabling project management professionals to leverage AI in their roles to better manage AI projects, the hub will deliver efficiency and automation to organisations. It will also help to address the challenges associated with AI usage, from ethics to governance. In turn, companies of all sizes and across all sectors will be empowered to adopt and implement AI - which has the potential to support innovation, boost competitiveness, and drive growth. This initiative ties in with the significant investment that PMI has made globally in AI over the past 18 months. This includes the creation of an AI platform called PMI Infinity, an AI-powered project management solution designed to strengthen expertise, streamline complex tasks, and maximise project success. Sponsored by business and IT consultancy emagine and set to officially launch on February 13th, the AI Innovation Hub in Ireland will host a number of events throughout 2025, from lunch-and-learns and webinars to hackathons. These hackathons will see project management professionals deploying AI tools to address specific challenges. Overseeing these activities is an AI Working Group within the Ireland Chapter of PMI - led by Declan Foster, the newly appointed Head of the AI Innovation Hub. In his role, Declan will leverage his consulting background and experience with his own startup to promote the adoption of AI and enable change management. Alongside Declan, the AI Working Group includes technical experts, thought leaders and data consultants across multiple sectors such as construction, property and business. The Ireland Chapter of PMI hopes to further grow this group from its now 3,500-strong membership base. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "AI is such a hot topic and there's a lot of talk around it. The aim of our AI Innovation Hub is to cut through that noise and guide the project management profession through this time of AI change, whilst supporting them to deliver AI change over the coming years. Through collaboration and education, we want to help drive real impact with these fast-evolving technologies across all sectors. "The reality is that every industry needs to be across AI and tuned into the latest developments, such as agentic AI. By tapping into such trends - not just from a knowledge-sharing perspective but practically in our day-to-day jobs - we can enable AI innovation and leadership for the profession, for other sectors, and for Ireland as a whole." Gillian Whelan, CEO of emagine, added: "At emagine, we're empowering our clients to achieve their ambitions by harnessing the transformative power of technology and AI. By sponsoring the AI Innovation Hub, we are proud to support the next wave of innovation, enabling individuals and organisations to unlock new opportunities and excel on their AI journeys." Self-care isn't about pampering or indulgence—it's a fundamental aspect of adulting. It's the conscious choice to prioritize our well-being, so we can show up fully in our work, relationships, and lives.   At the core of self-care is emotional intelligence: the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our emotions. When we are emotionally aware, we can better navigate stress, prevent burnout, and make more thoughtful decisions. Self-care begins with self-awareness—taking time to assess where we are emotionally, physically, and mentally. Once we know where we stand, we can move toward self-management: creating strategies that help us maintain balance, set boundaries, and respond to life's demands in a healthy way.   Self-care also requires us to examine our priorities. What really matters to us, and how do we protect and nurture those values? As adults, it's our responsibility to care for what's most important—not just for others, but for ourselves. When we take care of our own needs, we have the energy, focus, and resilience to show up and do the work that matters, whether it's at home, in our careers, or in our communities.   Tune in for more on how self-care is not about escaping responsibilities, but rather how it's about embracing them fully, with the emotional and physical resources we need to succeed. It's adulting at its finest.

Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen How to Speak to Executives About Projects: Translate Project Speak into Business Value As a PMO leader or project manager, you know the importance of keeping your projects on time, within scope, and on budget. But what happens when you need to communicate these critical details to executives? If their eyes glaze over when you dive into project specifics, you're not alone.   In this week's episode of the PMO Strategies Podcast, I'm joined by Lenka Pincot, Chief of Staff at the Project Management Institute (PMI), who shares her expert insights on how to bridge the communication gap between project managers and executives. In her role, Lenka leads global transformation efforts and oversees the enterprise PMO, making her uniquely qualified to help you rethink how to approach executive conversations. Why It's Important to Rethink How You Talk to Executives Executives are often overwhelmed with decisions, and they need clear, concise information to make quick, impactful choices. However, many project managers fall into the trap of speaking "project language"—focusing on deliverables, timelines, and risks—without connecting the dots to business outcomes.   Key takeaway: Executives don't want to hear about every project detail; they want to know how your project is driving business success. Are you helping the organization grow? Are you meeting customer needs? Are you contributing to long-term strategic goals? These are the questions you need to address.   Lenka shares an important lesson from her experience: “It's not that executives don't care about your projects—they do. But what they care about most is how your project impacts the overall business.” Your job is to translate the technical details of your project into the language of business, making it easier for executives to understand why your project matters and what decisions they need to make. How to Talk About Projects in a Way Executives Understand Here are three essential steps to ensure your conversations with executives resonate: 1. Understand What Your Executives Care About Before you walk into any meeting with an executive, make sure you understand their priorities. Are they focused on increasing revenue, improving customer satisfaction, or reducing risk? Knowing what drives them allows you to frame your project updates in a way that aligns with their goals. 2. Translate Technical Jargon into Business Value Executives don't need to know the technical details of how a project will get done; they need to know how it will move the needle for the business. Instead of focusing on metrics like Earned Value Management or IT specifics, explain how the project will lead to growth, efficiency, or competitive advantage.   Lenka shares this tip: “Be the translator between the technical and business worlds. Your ability to make that connection will help executives make better, faster decisions.” 3. Filter the Noise and Focus on What Matters It's tempting to present all the data to prove the importance of your project, but that can overwhelm executives. Instead, highlight the critical decisions that need executive input and own the rest. This builds trust and ensures that you're not bogging them down with unnecessary information.   Lenka suggests, “Bring only the ‘red flags'—those issues that genuinely need executive attention—and handle the rest as the project manager. This will help you maintain a strong, trusted relationship with your leadership team.” The Role of the PMO in Elevating Project Conversations The PMO plays a crucial role in coaching project managers on how to communicate effectively with executives. Whether it's through pre-meetings, coaching sessions, or providing strategic insights, PMO leaders can help project teams understand the business objectives behind each project and translate their updates accordingly.

PMI survey reveals 83% of project managers say AI lacks governance in sector

A survey from the Ireland Chapter of Project Management Institute (PMI) has found that 83% of project managers in Ireland agree that the necessary processes are not currently in place to govern the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the sector. Despite this, more than four in five (81%) are using, or are planning to use, the technology. Conducted by the Ireland Chapter of PMI, the survey of 122 project managers was carried out to mark the publication of its new report;Artificial Intelligence (AI): Four Key Factors Driving Change in Ireland in 2024 - sponsored by Auxilion. The report, which is available to download, examines the relationship between project management, the emerging technology, and its expected impact. In terms of the impact of AI, the research found that 69% of project managers think it will have a transformative effect on the industry. In fact, as a result of AI, project managers estimate both a cost saving and improvement to project success rates of 13%. The outstanding benefit of the technology was found to be automation, at 78%, with the effective use of resources (62%) and more effective metrics (41%) completing the top three. Echoing this, of project managers who have already introduced AI, automation was the most common - with 53% having implemented same. However, while the attitude around the future of AI and project management is positive, there appears to be some challenges. The top three barriers preventing project managers from working with the technology were a lack of education (74%), insufficient trust (72%), and a shortage of skills (69%). This may explain why 81% of respondents have, or are planning to, undertake training or education to effectively use AI. As for what project managers see as the negatives around AI usage, errors made by the technology (68%) was most cited, followed by data, privacy, and security concerns (65%). Highlighting the prevailing sentiment, a lack of governance (63%) was the third most-mentioned negative. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "As is the case with all emerging technologies, the individuals and businesses who stand to benefit the most from AI are those who adapt, implement and learn through usage. After all, it's not a case of if AI will be used in project management - it is already here - but how it will be used and, more importantly, how it is governed to drive success in the sector. "As highlighted in our survey and discussed in our report, AI is certainly going to have a transformative effect on the profession, with the automation of tasks provided by the technology set to lead to great improvements in innovation and efficiency. Whilst an exciting time in project management, with AI feeling like a new frontier, the foundations for its deployment - including training and governance - will be crucial for capitalising on and maximising its potential." Colina Moran, Director of Project Management and Governance, Auxilion, added: "When it comes to emerging technologies like AI, first-mover advantage is often a real differentiator. However, this research and the report show that organisations and project managers need to ensure that they have the processes in place to leverage such solutions effectively and securely. That means having governance controls in place, upskilling people and, in many cases, working with experienced partners. "Using AI can enable more efficient, cost-effective, and successful digital transformation. It has the power to take projects and businesses to the next level. But while this technology is certainly having an enormous impact on the project management sector, only those organisations that get their approach right will get ahead of the curve." PMI survey says 46% of project managers feel AI will help to reduce stress

A survey from the Ireland Chapter of Project Management Institute (PMI) has found that nearly half (46%) of project managers feel that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help to reduce stress in the workplace, but 72% feel that advancements in technology have led to unrealistic expectations from stakeholders who do not understand its capabilities. Conducted by PMI, the survey of 122 project managers was carried out ahead of its annual conference, the Work Smart Summit 2024, in association with EY. The event, which takes place in Dublin's Convention Centre on April 23rd, will discuss the future of project management and will feature David Rowan, founding UK Editor-In-Chief of WIRED magazine and author of the bestselling book Non-Bullshit Innovation as keynote speaker. Feedback was positive on the potential impact of AI on project management as a whole. In fact, some 70% say it would have a permanent transformative effect on the industry, and 74% say it is driving innovation. Three-quarters (75%) agree that AI has already had a significant positive impact on the profession, with 41% saying that the technology is improving project completion rates and delivery times. In terms of project completion, the survey found that the average cost of failed projects in the last 12 months was €710,896.23*, and only 11% of project managers' ten most recent projects met all project success metrics of schedule, cost, project benefits and resources. On the topic of resources, constraints in this area were cited as the top cause of stress by 52% of project managers. The other leading causes of stress were competing priorities (50%), and frequent scope changes (45%). However, the survey did find that nearly two thirds (63%) of respondents feel their workplace has open channels of communication to discuss mental health issues such as stress, burnout, and fatigue. Commenting on the findings, Peter Glynne, Ireland Chapter of PMI President, said: "Project management can of course be a high-pressure profession, but it is clear that - as well as adequate training and effective ways of working - emerging technologies like AI can streamline projects and boost success. "In turn, this enables project managers to work smarter - the theme of our annual conference in April - as opposed to longer or harder. AI can also play a pivotal role in driving automation and innovation, something which we will be discussing at the Convention Centre next month and which makes the future of the industry very exciting." Jennifer Ryan, EY Ireland Business Transformation Partner added: "EY Ireland is proud to once again sponsor the PMI's national conference, the Work Smart Summit. Project managers are at the heart of transformational change, and harnessing systems, technologies and strategies that simplify complex endeavours and enable people and organisations work smarter, comes naturally to them. "Artificial Intelligence, in particular Generative AI, offers project managers the opportunity to further embed innovation and efficiency into their projects, automating routine or process driven tasks and enabling people to focus on higher value tasks and most crucially, enabling more human interactions."
