How a little nature can help you heal with Jessica Murnane

Even if you don't think of yourself as outdoorsy, the research is pretty clear: time spent unplugged - bonus if it's got a little “outside thrown in” - is pretty dang good for you. And if you, like me, think you might need more of it…today's episode might be just the inspiration you need to get your hands dirty and grow something.I'm speaking with the lovely Jessica Murnane about how even just a little nature can help you heal. Jessica is a horticultural therapy practitioner based in Charleston, South Carolina and she is the growing inspiration you didn't realize you needed…particularly if you've never thought of yourself as an earthy person. She believes that interacting with the plant world, even if all you have is a windowsill, or a bit of time to cook or craft, is a powerful way of connecting to the natural world and there is science to back it up.I love this episode: I speak with Jessica about everything from how she - very much a city person - stumbled upon a love of gardening and found her way to horticultural therapy. We talk about the history and science of horticultural therapy and how you can bring a little bit of nature's medicine into your own life. Even if you're not the type to wax lyrical about a landscape. And especially if you don't have a lot of time or money.About Jessica Murnane:Jessica Murnane is an author, creative consultant, and Horticultural Therapy Practitioner. She's the founder of Basker, where she helps people use gardening and nature as a tool for mental, physical, emotional, and social health. Jessica has written two books, the cookbook One Part Plant and the women's health book Know Your Endo. Her work has appeared in Bon Appétit, Goop, House Beautiful, People, and Shape Magazine, among others. She's an avid cut flower gardener and loves giving away flowers even more than she likes growing them. She lives in Charleston, SC with her husband and son. On this episode we chat about:How growing things builds connection with others and natureHow Jessica, a city dweller, fell in love with growing flowersWhy growing things can help non-nature lovers connect with natureWhat is horticultural therapy? Research behind the practiceHow growing things - even in a single pot - can improve access to natureHow to access community nature resources and educationWays to get started with growingHow growing things democratizes what is a luxury item in our societySupport the Pod!We couldn't make this podcast happen without the support of our amazing listeners…I love hearing your feedback on these episodes to be sure to join the conversation on our instagram @theallsortspod@desireenielsenrd@jessicamurnane If you love this episode, please share it with your friends and family, or take a minute to rate, review or subscribe on your favourite podcast app. We appreciate EVERY. People in general--and certainly people who listen to this podcast--have come to understand that we are completely colonized by bacteria. We have a grasp on where it lives, how it helps us. But viruses are much more abstract. Covid-19 has laid bare how little we still know about our interactions with viruses, what role our gut plays in the process, and whether there is a reciprocal relationship between plague and host. What is less mysterious for those who study the global virome is how a modern pandemic starts and what we can do to avoid them in the future. Joining me to discuss where we stand today in our understanding of viruses is Dr. Dennis Carroll, who heads the Global Virome Project, an international partnership that builds systems to detect future viral threats while they are still circulating in wildlife. He has over 30 years of leadership experience in global health and development, and until recently, served as the Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Emerging Threats Division. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: Why the way we interact with certain ecosystems creates virus hot spots Whether pandemics are going to become the new normal What has changed within our world that is making outbreaks more frequent Why raising livestock increases the risk of future pandemics How climate change factors into things What we can do as a global community to change our behavior and prevent future outbreaks And so much more…! Catherine is here today with Jessica Murnane. Jessica Murnane is the creator of the One Part Plant movement & author of the One Part Plant cookbook, host of the One Part Podcast, and founder of Know Your Endo, the endometriosis education and awareness platform, with her latest book, Know Your Endo, will be released Spring of 2021. Six years ago, Jessica's major food groups were … sour patch kids, diet coke, and whatever lean cuisine had the most cheese. After years of unsuccessful diets and self-help books that didn't work, she felt pretty low and not so good about herself and didn't think it was possible for her to have the willpower to become a truly healthy person. Maybe there was a little bit of thinking she didn't deserve it. Jessica was really sick; her endometriosis had gotten so severe that most days she could barely make it out of bed. She tried everything that she could get her hands on to get better. She had multiple surgeries, tried conventional pain-killers (and less-conventional, leafy ones), fancy yoga and not-so-fancy-yoga, and even therapy to help with the depression caused by the pain. Nothing worked. Jessica's doctors gave her one final solution – a hysterectomy. I loved this episode. One thing we talked about with our group programs and with all of our clients is life is constantly happening for us in perfect timing. When we can step out of that victim mentality of "Life is happening to me" and and "Life is happening for me" it shifts our emotionality and we're able to see and experience more miracles and so we talked a lot about this. Jessica opens up about her condition, endometriosis and how it's given her awareness of her body.  By going plant based, she has managed and eliminated many of her symptoms. We talk about the impact of food and our bodies from an internal approach, how it affects our menstrual cycles and Jessica takes us through a body scan practice to check in which was super cool. About Jessica Jessica Murnane is the creator of the One Part Plant movement (she's working to get everyone on this planet to eat one plant-based meal each day), host of the One Part Podcast, and wellness advocate (she works to raise awareness for endometriosis). Jessica has contributed to and appeared in countless magazines and websites, including Mind Body Green, Goop, The Coveteur, Food 52, PopSugar, and Chalkboard Magazine and has spoken at Apple, Taste Talks, and Wanderlust. Inside this episode, Jessica shares How Jessica created a cookbook from experimenting with food. Living with endometriosis and managing the symptoms.  How we can check in with our body and use our pain as a teacher.  What you'll hear: 8:00-How food affects our menstrual cycles.  21:00- What Endometriosis has taught Jessica about her body. 26:08- Living with body dysmorphia and being open to how our bodies change. 40:00- A body scan practice to connect with the different sensations we feel.  You can find more about Jessica at: http://www.jessicamurnane.com https://www.facebook.com/OnePartPlant https://instagram.com/jessicamurnane https://instagram.com/onepartplant   Join the Hungry for Happiness community for more! www.facebook.com/groups/hungryforhappinesscommunity

My guest today is my sister from another mister, a woman with another catchy business name that has the word plant in it, a wearer of the coolest hats ever, literally and also figuratively because she wears super stylish hats on her head but also wears the hat of podcast host, second podcast host (she has 2 podcasts), cookbook author, mom, wife, stage 4 endometriosis thriver, and proudly: my friend. Ok, you know I’m talking about Jessica Murnane, don’t you? If you don’t already know Jessica’s work, or vegan, gluten free chocolate chip cookies, you’re probs about to fall in love with her - and them. I should probably tell you actual biography stuff. Ok, Jessica is the founder of one part plant, a movement dedicated to helping peeps not party in their plants..that’s my thing, but eat one plant-based meal a day. Equally as cool. She’s the host of the One Part Podcast, The Cookbook Deal Podcast and she’s the author of the must-have plant-cookbook, called - you guessed it, One Part Plant. Alright, well Jessica might be one part plant, but our chat about plants is one hundred parts awesome! You’ll hear: How eating plants helped her stabilize her crippling Stage IV endometriosis. The final unhealthy food she held onto in her diet for dear life! The first plant-based food she ate that she was VERY proud of (which is hilarious). Why we should talk more about how hard healthy diet change is! Which book, written by a former podcast guest, hands-down changed Jessica’s life. What it’s like raising a plant-based little person! (A child.) Her favorite recipe from the book right this second (and the one that gets the most fan mail). If you've been following along with WANT for a while, you're probably already familiar with who I'm about to introduce you to - at the very least just because I talk about her all. the. time. Today's guest is Jessica Murnane, wellness advocate, podcast host, and creator of the One Part Plant movement. She's the author of a brand new cookbook, One Part Plant, and the host of two wildly successful podcasts: One Part Podcast and The Cookbook Deal. After being diagnosed with endometriosis and receiving a pretty crazy ultimatum from her doctors, Jessica decided to try overhauling her diet to see if she could heal herself naturally. Fast forward to today, and Jessica now has zero of those debilitating endometriosis symptoms and follows a full-on plant based diet. If Jessica looks familiar, it might be because she’s been on WANT before. First in an interview, next on the tenth episode of the WANTcast, and then lots of guest appearances here and there as she's become a dear friend and a person I feel is truly out there changing the world, on and off-line. In Episode 10, Jessica talked about her brand new cookbook deal, and we casually mentioned her coming back to do a "Part Two" episode... WELP, little did we know how much could happen in just one year. I won't ruin it for you, but I'll just say her newest podcast's subtitle is "Also, The Weirdest Year Of My Life." That should say it all. I knew we'd have a lot of ground to cover, but what we ended up talking about most actually wasn't the year or the cookbook - it was everything else in between. Her candor, humor, and heart are hallmarks of why her OPP peeps adore her so much...and why her cookbook became a #1 New Release on Amazon after only a day. A DAY. One Part Plant is so much more than a cookbook - it's a memoir slash self-help guide slash ode to all the reasons eating "one part plant" can enhance your life from the inside out. Think I'm exaggerating? Check it out and we can start a little OPP cooking club from afar. This episode's title could have been the longest thing ever, because we truly covered so much good ground. In this episode we talk about caring about being "cool" vs just liking what you like, food issues and Jessica's past with not just what put in her body but how she viewed her body, toxic relationships and the need to "fix" others, her relationship with her husband and what makes a healthy relationship in general (especially when you come from having body/food/fixer issues), the crazy way her new Cookbook Deal podcast panned out, asking for what you need personally, professionally, and financially, her beef with people who say they're "too old" for things, the barometer to use when you're deciding whether to say yes or no to a project...oh my goodness, I should probably just stop there so you can listen for yourself. I'm honored to have her on the WANTcast again and pumped to see what she does next... Oh, and just for some context: we begin this episode discussing something her husband does for her every year on her birthday: an eight-day lead-up entitled "Murnanukkah."   --- Like this episode? A few years ago Jessica Murnane was on the verge of major surgery, a last resort to help manage her endometriosis. After a friend recommended her trying a plant-based diet to alleviate some of the pain, Jessica figured she had nothing to lose. Weeks later she was already feeling better than she’d felt for years and the surgery was put on the back burner. Over the past few years Jessica has taught herself how to cook (her diet previously consisted of “Sour Patch Kids, Diet Coke, and whatever Lean Cuisine had cheese”) and began to figure out how to navigate the massive changes to her lifestyle without alienating herself or her friends and family. In this episode Brooke and Jessica talk about the One Part philosophy and how small, incremental changes can lead to enormous shifts over time, but also the importance of being patient with ourselves as these changes settle in. They also talk about the challenges Jessica faced in changing her lifestyle, the benefits of those changes (she still hasn’t had that surgery) and also the recent move from Chicago to Charlston and how a slower paced city has impacted family life. There’s also a really interesting chat about trends, and how to avoid becoming that annoying person when your lifestyle or passion has its 15 minutes of fame, and Jessica has some brilliant points to make about basically ignoring the BS and doing what feels right for you, regardless of trends. I think I can successfully say I fully geeked out during this interview. Much like the last episode with Katie Dalebout, I've been obsessing over this week's guest's work for a bit now, and I think this conversation was loaded with juicy stuff. You know who I'm talking about. Yeah. I'm talking about the woman wellness weirdo, Jessica Murnane. Some of you may remember a few months ago I shared a blog post listing off my current favorite podcasts, and you may remember a specifically incredible one called the One Part Podcast by Jessica Murnane. If you missed that post and haven't gotten into her pod, now's your chance to learn more about her before you dive in! Already stay plugged into Jessica's work? Then you're definitely going to love this discussion we had regarding everything from body image and endometriosis, to some shit that's been going down in the world and why we should raise our voices. Jessica's blog, One Part Plant stems from the concept that every single one of us can benefit from making even the smallest shifts toward a plant-based lifestyle. In her case, she's found that eating plant-based has helped reduce her symptoms from stage IV endometriosis, and though she recognizes that everyone is different, I think we both can agree that there are seemingly infinite benefits to incorporating more plants into your diet. Lucky for us, Jessica is sharing even more of her scrumptious and creative (yet simple) plant-based recipes in her upcoming cookbook, which she speaks a lot about in this episode! Yay! Personally, I've been drawn to Jessica's story since last May. I was curled up on my couch with tears streaking my face and a smoldering heating pad smushed against my pelvis as I desperately Googled "foods for endometriosis pain and balancing hormones". As I share in this podcast episode, I continued to her site where I found Laura Miller of Raw. Vegan. Not. Gross smiling back at me. One of my favorite food bloggers! Froobs! I was instantly hooked. I don't want to overwhelm you with a lengthy introduction, because I absolutely want you to jump right into this episode and become mildly to moderately obsessed with Jessica.
