How do you convince yourself that you belong in the room when your past keeps telling you otherwise? In this episode, we explore the relationship between identity, self-belief, and the evidence we use to define ourselves. Many of us are living from outdated beliefs formed by past experiences, rejection, disappointment, survival mode, or the expectations of others. Even when new opportunities arrive, we can find ourselves questioning whether we deserve them, whether we're ready, or whether we belong there at all.But what if the problem isn't the opportunity? What if the problem is that our beliefs haven't caught up with who we're becoming? In this conversation, we explore why updating your core beliefs requires more than positive thinking. It requires practice. It requires new experiences. It requires giving yourself enough evidence to support a new truth.Together, we discuss:Why discernment matters when consuming advice and personal development contentThe difference between the season that requires rest and the season that requires actionHow survival mode can keep us attached to outdated versions of ourselvesWhy going quiet can help you reconnect with your authentic identityThe role of lived experience in rewiring limiting beliefsHow to build confidence through action instead of waiting to feel readyPractical ways to create evidence that you belong in the roomThe connection between faith, purpose, courage, and personal growthWhy discomfort is often a sign that transformation is already happeningReleased on South Africa's Youth Day, this episode also reflects on courage, legacy, and the generations who made it possible for many of us to walk through doors that were once closed.Whether the room is a new career opportunity, a business, a relationship, a creative project, a ministry, or an assignment God has placed on your heart, this episode is an invitation to stop measuring your future against old evidence.Because the life you're building may require a version of you that your past has never met before.Instagram: @livingcontentpodcastTikTok: @oleratowritesYouTube: Living Content PodcastSubstack: Make Life SacredIf this conversation resonated with you, my debut blended memoir explores many of these themes in greater depth through stories of identity, healing, faith, resilience, and becoming.

In this episode, Rebecca sits down with clinical hypnotist, author, and educator Shauna Cummins to explore the power of the mind, the role of inner dialogue in shaping our reality, and how hypnosis can be used as a practical tool for transformation. Together, they unpack how subconscious patterns influence our lives, why manifestation requires deeper clarity than we often realize, and how we can begin consciously “rewiring” the narratives that guide us.In this episode: The role of inner dialogue in shaping our reality—and why it sits at the foundation of intention and manifestationDeveloping discernment: distinguishing between supportive thoughts and limiting or conditioned beliefsHow hypnosis works to “rewire” the mind: what's happening beneath the surface when beliefs and behaviors begin to changeShauna Cummins is a clinical hypnotist, author of Wishcraft: A Guide to Manifesting a Positive Future, and founder of The Divine Feminine School of Hypnosis. She is also the co-founder of The Hypnotist Loft in NYC. Her work integrates hypnosis, ritual, and imagination into grounded, accessible practices for subconscious healing and transformation. Her work has been featured in outlets such as Bust, Nylon, and Teen Vogue. www.RebeccaConran.com Instagram @RebeccaConran The Astrology of Uranus in Gemini: Uranus recently entered Gemini. This placement is fundamentally about disruption and innovation in the realm of the mind, communication, and perception. Gemini rules thinking patterns, language, and the constant “mental chatter.” Questions about discernment and awareness of inner dialogue sit right at the heart of Gemini themes. Uranus is associated with breakthroughs and sudden insight. When Uranus (planet of awakening and disruption) moves through Gemini, it tends to shake up habitual thought patterns and push people to question the narratives they've always believed. At its lowest, Gemini can be scattered or reactive; at its highest, it becomes consciously selective about which thoughts to engage with. Uranus entering Gemini amplifies the need to choose thoughts intentionally, because the volume and speed of ideas increase dramatically. Hypnosis fits well with Uranus in Gemini. Gemini governs the conscious and subconscious bridge through language. Uranus governs the nervous system and rapid re-patterning. So hypnosis helps by updating mental code, which is exactly what Uranus in Gemini is about on a collective level. The invitation of Uranus in Gemini: Question your thoughtsBecome discerning about inner dialogueConsciously rewrite mental patternsUse tools (like hypnosis) to harness the processIf you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe and stay connected with New Story with Rebecca Conran on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you stream your podcasts. We all know that stories are important when we're engaging decisionmakers. But we don't always know what story is going to be the right story. And how to tell that story in a way that is really going to pull that decisionmaker in, and actually move them closer to yes. So often I hear from Nonprofit leaders who tell me they brought what they thought was their best story to a conversation with a decisionmaker, and it didn't really seem to shift anything. It's not that it didn't land at all, but it didn't seem to get any traction either. We want every part of our messaging to be designed specifically to pull that decisionmaker in, and move them closer to yes. Your stories are absolutely no exception. In fact, they can be one of the most powerful tools in your toolkit, if you know how to use them to greatest effect. In this episode, we share: The differences between a story that sells, and one that doesn'tHow to make sure the story you tell is the right one for this particular decisionmakerThe first thing you must do before you begin crafting a storyHow to use story to teach a needed lesson to a decisionmaker, that they will actually learnHow to use story to dismantle a decisionmaker's unhelpful beliefsHow to create vivid metaphors that stick in the decisionmaker's mindHow to build an element of unpredictability into your story that keeps the decisionmaker engaged Help spread the word! If you found value in this episode, I'd be grateful if you would leave a review on iTunes or wherever you listen. Your reviews help other nonprofit leaders find the podcast.  Thanks!!

As Nonprofit leaders, we all have a relationship with power. But it's not something that we tend to take a look at much. And I think perhaps the reason for that is what a lot of Nonprofit leaders tell me – that they're not super comfortable with the concept of power. Today I want to really dig into some questions that will help us all understand our relationship with power a little bit better, and perhaps begin to shift that relationship a little bit. The thing is, our relationship with power is often pretty complex. What we don't always consider is that we're also walking around with a whole set of beliefs about power that shape that relationship. Our beliefs about power in particular have been shaped over a lifetime of experience. But they've also been informed by things we heard growing up. And by the environment we're operating in now.  If we're operating in an environment with a lot of other Nonprofit leaders, and that's our primary thought ecosystem, what happens a lot is that we start reinforcing one another's beliefs about power. And what I've noticed is that a lot of times those beliefs may not always be serving us very well. In fact, they may be holding us back from the things we most want. In this episode, we share:How and why our beliefs about power affect our actions and decisionsThe most common beliefs about power held by many Nonprofit leadersA simple exercise to help you uncover your hidden beliefs about powerThe most powerful questions you can ask yourself to rewire your beliefsHow to change your relationship with power to one that truly serves you Ready to take your messaging and engagement skills to the next level and start getting next-level results? About three years ago, many of my friends moved away within a six month period. While I was excited for these friends, I also grieved; my friends are my main support system, my family. How would I keep these friendships alive? I invested a lot of energy into thinking about it, through which I developed what I'm tentatively calling the “Your People” framework. The best way to think about this framework is to imagine a tree. Trees start as seeds, and then you provide them with nutrients and soil. Over time, trees grow roots. Some roots get really thick and strong; some grow deep. Some grow offshoots. The more roots that grow, the more stable the tree.In my friendship theory, there are three kinds of roots, which I'll dig into today. My hope is that this framework and language helps people think about these relationships and consider what actions to take to build better versions of our friendships.Want more information? Are you somebody who really cares about wildlife and conservation and you're trying to get people to change their behavior? Reduce their carbon footprint? Get them to not litter? Or keep their cats indoors to save birds? Whether it's getting people to switch to clean energy sources or eating less meat to help save the planet, all of these things all require human behavior change, and the foundation of such change is communication. A lot of people tend to think we just need to educate people more - that people have a deficiency in knowledge, and that if only we could get people to understand the data and studies like we do, then they would see the error in their ways. But as we've seen with well-researched topics with lots of supporting data and studies like climate change and vaccines, this is not true. There is more to it! We need effective communication, which requires dialogue. This week's podcast is inspired by two events: (1) the results of the 2024 election here in the United States where we saw the public vote for an administration that is anti-environment and science and (2) the aftermath of me reading an eye-opening, enlightening, and highly entertaining book on the subject of rethinking by social scientist Adam Grant: Think Again. In this episode I talk about how to be a more effective communicator, get people to rethink their opinions and values (including yourself!), and teach you how to have productive, engaging, and useful debates with people who think, at times, very differently than you. I am living proof it is possible! The lessons shared largely come from the book Think Again, but also my own personal experience engaging with and even being friends with people from “the other side.” You'll learn how to reframe your perspective on arguments so you don't feel exhausted, angry, or drained, how effective listening is critical in debate, and how providing nuance, multiple perspectives, and humility can make you more effective in changing minds. Often when we talk about working with wildlife, we think about it from the animal's perspective and studying the species, but in reality, almost all of the conservation solutions with declining biodiversity have to do with interventions on the human side. Want to save wolves? We need to reduce poaching. Want to save monarchs? We need to get people to plant more milk weed and reduce habitat loss. These things require interventions on the human side. So if you are someone who works in science or conservation, or are simply someone who wants to create more positive change in the world, then this episode is for you!Specifically I talk about: Why it's important to engage in debate and that it doesn't have to be hostile, exhausting, or heatedHow debate makes us stronger leaders and better scientistsHow spirited discussions helped Disney create Pixar's The Incredibles that went on to win two OscarsHow to reframe arguments into debates and learn how to dance rather than fightCommon “don'ts” and mistakes that many people make that close people off and cause them to dig more into their original beliefsHow to motivate someone to share information with youWhy facts alone don't work in changing mindsThat asking questions activates a rethinking cycle in your debate partner (and yourself!)Why listening is critical to getting people to open up and be receptiveHow the “vaccine whisperer” got people to vaccinate their children through non-judgemental empowerment and listeningThat binary or black and white thinking can actually cause people to move away from your causeHow uncertainty and humility can make you more effective in changing mindsAnd more!Dream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Ready to turn your love of animals into a thriving career?
