Are you somebody who really cares about wildlife and conservation and you're trying to get people to change their behavior? Reduce their carbon footprint? Get them to not litter? Or keep their cats indoors to save birds? Whether it's getting people to switch to clean energy sources or eating less meat to help save the planet, all of these things all require human behavior change, and the foundation of such change is communication. A lot of people tend to think we just need to educate people more - that people have a deficiency in knowledge, and that if only we could get people to understand the data and studies like we do, then they would see the error in their ways. But as we've seen with well-researched topics with lots of supporting data and studies like climate change and vaccines, this is not true. There is more to it! We need effective communication, which requires dialogue. This week's podcast is inspired by two events: (1) the results of the 2024 election here in the United States where we saw the public vote for an administration that is anti-environment and science and (2) the aftermath of me reading an eye-opening, enlightening, and highly entertaining book on the subject of rethinking by social scientist Adam Grant: Think Again. In this episode I talk about how to be a more effective communicator, get people to rethink their opinions and values (including yourself!), and teach you how to have productive, engaging, and useful debates with people who think, at times, very differently than you. I am living proof it is possible! The lessons shared largely come from the book Think Again, but also my own personal experience engaging with and even being friends with people from “the other side.” You'll learn how to reframe your perspective on arguments so you don't feel exhausted, angry, or drained, how effective listening is critical in debate, and how providing nuance, multiple perspectives, and humility can make you more effective in changing minds. Often when we talk about working with wildlife, we think about it from the animal's perspective and studying the species, but in reality, almost all of the conservation solutions with declining biodiversity have to do with interventions on the human side. Want to save wolves? We need to reduce poaching. Want to save monarchs? We need to get people to plant more milk weed and reduce habitat loss. These things require interventions on the human side. So if you are someone who works in science or conservation, or are simply someone who wants to create more positive change in the world, then this episode is for you!Specifically I talk about: Why it's important to engage in debate and that it doesn't have to be hostile, exhausting, or heatedHow debate makes us stronger leaders and better scientistsHow spirited discussions helped Disney create Pixar's The Incredibles that went on to win two OscarsHow to reframe arguments into debates and learn how to dance rather than fightCommon “don'ts” and mistakes that many people make that close people off and cause them to dig more into their original beliefsHow to motivate someone to share information with youWhy facts alone don't work in changing mindsThat asking questions activates a rethinking cycle in your debate partner (and yourself!)Why listening is critical to getting people to open up and be receptiveHow the “vaccine whisperer” got people to vaccinate their children through non-judgemental empowerment and listeningThat binary or black and white thinking can actually cause people to move away from your causeHow uncertainty and humility can make you more effective in changing mindsAnd more!Dream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Ready to turn your love of animals into a thriving career?

Sports has a special place in so many of our hearts. We love the competitiveness, adrenaline, and passion that comes out of sports, but something that is undermined is how sports can be used for outreach, for finding friends (even a family), and the good that comes from playing with people that you may never meet otherwise. Today, we're talking about how we as Christian athletes can use the sports that we play and watch as a way of reaching out to people and using sports to relate with people within your community. Sports Ministry Enthusiast and Professional Speaker Duane Eger joins the show to talk about this intriguing, yet important topic, what he's learned about friendship through playing sports, and being inviting and inclusive with all who play sports. Listen as we discuss:Maintaining a Christian friendship mindset in the sports that we watch and playAn inspirational story of friendship found in sports from Jack Twyman and Maurice StokesWhy he has a passion for sports ministry and outreachSports being a way of reaching others of different values or beliefsHow athletes can step out of their comfort zone to be inclusive to anyone that they meet in sportsNew Segment: How do you see God in sports today? About three years ago, many of my friends moved away within a six month period. While I was excited for these friends, I also grieved; my friends are my main support system, my family. How would I keep these friendships alive? I invested a lot of energy into thinking about it, through which I developed what I'm tentatively calling the “Your People” framework. The best way to think about this framework is to imagine a tree. Trees start as seeds, and then you provide them with nutrients and soil. Over time, trees grow roots. Some roots get really thick and strong; some grow deep. Some grow offshoots. The more roots that grow, the more stable the tree.In my friendship theory, there are three kinds of roots, which I'll dig into today. My hope is that this framework and language helps people think about these relationships and consider what actions to take to build better versions of our friendships.Want more information? In this conversation with Jennifer Natalya Fink, we explore the nuances of her fascinating new book, All Our Families: Disability Lineage and the Future of Kinship. The premise of Jennifer's book is that disability is often described as a tragedy, a crisis, or an aberration, even though more than 1 in 5 people worldwide have a disability. She wanted to explore the question: Why is this common human experience rendered exceptional? Instead, Jennifer is advocating for a reclamation of disability as a history, a culture, and an identity. She is pushing for a world where families see disability in the context of a collective sense of belonging, as cause for celebration, and is a call for a radical reimagining of carework and kinship. We went deep into this idea of a disability lineage, and Jennifer shared what's at stake if we don't know and claim our family history. We also discussed why getting a disability diagnosis can be traumatic for families and how it's accentuated by how our society thinks about disability. Lastly, Jennifer shared her thoughts on making the care system more equitable by embracing disability as a collective experience rather than something individual families have to deal with. ***Jennifer Natalya Fink is director of the Program in Disability Studies and a professor of English at Georgetown University. She is the author of 6 books and founder of the Gorilla Press, a nonprofit promoting youth literacy through bookmaking. Fink is the winner of the Dana Award for the Novel and the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Innovative Fiction, as well as a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. First and foremost, she is a mother; the transformative experience of parenting her autistic daughter is the center of her work. Things you'll learn from this episodeHow Jennifer's own family story led her to be interested in researching disability and disability lineageWhat a disability lineage isWhy getting a disability diagnosis can be traumatic for families and how it's accentuated by our society's views of disabilityThe importance of understanding that care and disability are woven into the human experienceWhat we are losing out on by not knowing our family disability history as families raising differently wired kidsHow even good-intentioned comments can feed ableist beliefsHow we can work to make the care system more equitable, including seeing disability as a collective experience rather than something families must face on an individual basis Resources mentioned for Disability Lineage — What It Is and How it Impacts FamiliesAll Our Families: Disability Lineage and the Future of KinshipJennifer Natayla Fink's websiteJennifer on InstagramDisability Studies at Georgetown UniversityMia MingusFor more info, visit: https://www.tiltparenting.com/session297Support the show
