Once again we've come to the end of another series and once again we're going to end with our popular Q&A session. Thanks for listening and joining us on board the Dream Boat this time round. We love having you here and enjoy reading your thoughts and questions. Dave pops back on board to join Laura for the wrap up and they tackle some great dream themes in this session, including toilet dreams and funeral dreams, discussing their psychological implications and the importance of ‘letting go' for personal transformation. Whereas toilet dreams can reflect bodily needs or deeper psychological issues, funeral dreams signify the need for ritualistic closure and rebirth. They discuss how dreams can serve as a reflection of unmet needs in waking life and how the process of letting go can be both challenging and necessary for growth, leading to deeper self-awareness and emotional processing. They also address the impact of intense dreams on sleep quality and the significance of sleep hygiene and mindfulness in achieving restful sleep. Laura discusses mindfulness techniques from her book Nine Steps to a Mindful Life Without Meditating which can help calm the mind before sleep. What happens at the intersection of dreams and consciousness? In this conversation, Laura is joined again by Maria to explore the profound notion of one very powerful question: WHO IS THE DREAMER. Their guest to help dismantle this philosophical dream knot is Dr. Newton Kondaveti, of Quantum Life University near Hyderabad in India. Dr Kondaveti shares his insights into the relationship between dreams and consciousness, the significance of lucid dreaming, which can pinpoint the path to a higher awareness. He also considers the concept of the Akashic records, a cosmic library or energetic archive of all universal events, thoughts, words and emotions. They discuss how dreams serve as a tool for self-discovery and can alleviate suffering. Dreams contain hidden dimensions of our existence with dreams revealing hidden dimensions not accessible in waking life, as well as providing insights into past and future experiences. Dr. Kondaveti discusses his work at the Quantum Life University (QLU), emphasizing the importance of understanding dreams in the context of spiritual science and personal growth and the university's aim of blend spirituality with scientific understanding. In this conversation, Laura meets ‘smellologist' Keren Bester to explore the intricate relationship between smell and dreams. They delve into Keren's PhD research on olfactory perception and its philosophical implications and how this can relate to dreams. They discuss how smell influences memory and personhood, the impact of COVID when many people, who lost their sense of smell (anosmia), realised the importance of this mainly unconscious sense in their lives. They also look at the potential for using smell as a tool in lucid dreaming and whether certain smells can provoke good or bad dreams. And are you one of the few people who can actually smell something in a dream? Do you have smelly dreams? If so, Keren would like to hear from you. Her contact details are below. Keren shares her personal journey and the challenges of researching a sense that is often overlooked and vital to our sense of Self. Keren's website is www.chemicalpoetry.com (an updated version is coming soon!) keren@chemicalpoetry.com She's keen to hear from people who: - have experienced smell in their dreams - have explicitly experienced not being able to smell i.e. noticing in a dream they can't smell something - anyone who would like to participate in research using smell to prompt lucidity and/or influence dream content Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! Laura announces the DRI's first retreat in the home of dream incubation – Epidavros in Greece. Twelve lucky people will join her and Sarah Janes from Dream Mysteries in May (see how to join the retreat link below*) for a full immersion in the ancient temple sleep practices for healing. Laura and Melinda run through the power of these ancient rituals before Laura interviews Sarah Janes about her fascinating work in this area. Sarah Janes talks about how she became fascinated by the power of dreams during childhood and what led her from jettisoning her career as a US show promoter to become a specialist in ancient dream cults through the development of her work at Dream Mysteries. Laura and Sarah discuss the beauty of Epidavros and how its magic is spell binding, especially wrapped around the myths and practices of the Greek healing God Asklepios. Sarah Jane reveals how retreatants are often called by the God himself in dreams to come out to the sanctuary and how they find her online after such a dream. Laura discusses how the God turned up for her once in a spiritual workshop before she became a psychotherapist which led her to visit the site at Epidavros and, like Sarah Janes, the visit felt like a powerful ‘coming home'. Sarah runs through what the retreatants will find at the temple and how the group will try out sleep hypnosis, purification practices, sound work and dream theatre work, in similar ways to the ancients who experienced dreaming there thousands of years ago. The two dream researchers also look at a similar incubation project in a recreated oasis in the Egyptian desert and the links between the ancient Egyptian dream incubation practices with the cult of Asklepios in the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds. *If you want to join them in May the Retreat Link is here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/divine-dreaming-retreat-in-greece-tickets-1236007895889?aff=oddtdtcreator Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! In this festive conversation, Laura and Melinda are joined by author Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, Dickens' great, great, great granddaughter to explore the profound influence of Charles Dickens on Christmas traditions, dreaming and the cultural significance of his work, particularly 'A Christmas Carol.' They delve into Dickens' complex relationship with sleep and dreams, which is often explored in his novels with their themes of redemption and social responsibility, and his bizarre sleeping habits. Dickens suffered from parasomnias – sleeping disorders like hallucinations and nightmares, which are the hallmark feature of ‘A Christmas Carol' when the ghost of Marley terrorises his business partner Ebenezer Scrooge in his sleep on Christmas Eve, with dramatic consequences. Lucinda, biographer and Victorian historian, shares insights into Victorian Christmas celebrations and personal traditions, emphasizing the importance of connection and joy during the holiday season. They discuss the enduring legacy of Dickens' storytelling and its relevance in today's world and Lucinda's new book, ‘A Victorian Christmas' as well as her earlier book ‘Dickens and Christmas'. Your dream questions... answered. It's the end of Series 4, and before we take a little break, we take the opportunity to answer more of the questions sent in. Questions like: What does it mean when I hear music in a dream? And (the classic): Why do I keep dreaming about my ex? As ever, the answers lead us down some suprising, interesting, and sometimes amusing paths. Sound bites: "Music is a way of relating to those subtle aspects of ourselves that don't have to go through the cognitive filter." "Dreaming about an ex may indicate unfinished business, projection of certain qualities onto the ex, or a need to revisit and resolve emotions associated with the past relationship." Dr Deirdre Barrett is a pioneer on the frontier of dreams and technology. This week, we bring you Laura's interview with this Harvard psychologist, dream researcher, clinician and artist who has been pushing the bounds of new technology to increase our understanding of dreams and ask deeper questions about what generative AI tells us about dreams when it generates its own versions of novel dream reports. Can you tell the difference between an AI's dream and a human's? Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D. is a psychologist on the faculty of Harvard where she teaches courses on dreams to undergraduates, psychiatry residents & psychology interns, and lectures on hypnosis. She is President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. She has written five books including Pandemic Dreams and The Committee of Sleep, She is Editor-in-Chief of the international academic journal, Dreaming. Dr. Barrett has published dozens of academic articles and chapters on dreams, hypnosis, sleep talking, and evolutionary psychology. Her current work focuses on dreams and creativity. Laura interviewed Dr. Barrett at the annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams in Kerkrade in the Netherlands. For the Dream of the Week, Dr. Barrett and Laura discuss a dream that inspired one of her works of dream art, in which owls swoop down onto a woman's head. Talk about your dreams??
Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide! Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation. The guests discuss the accuracy and insights provided by the AI interpretations, which draw on the work of Freud and Jung, among others. In an extended “Dream of the Week” segment, Sheldon shares a dream for Dave and Laura to explore and interpret, and then the group hears what Elsewhere had to say about it. What will the influence of AI be on dream interpretation, and are there potential benefits of using AI as a tool for self-reflection and understanding? Hopefully it's collaboration, not competition. Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (as discussed on episode 2 of this series of the Dream Boat), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Sheldon Juncker, B.Sc. is a software engineer who works in the fields of dream research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, who in addition to his work with Dr Bulkeley on Elsewhere also helps to maintain the Sleep and Dream Database. Dave and Laura explore techniques and practices to improve sleep and enhance dream recall. The conversation covers sleep tracking devices, the different stages of sleep, the importance of deep sleep, and the role of REM sleep in dreaming. Drawing on personal experiences with sleep as well as their therapy experience, they share tips for improving sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and avoiding screens before bed. They also explore mindfulness practices and the use of dream journals to enhance dream recall. Takeaways Good sleep health is essential for improving dream recall and overall well-being. Understanding the different stages of sleep, including deep sleep and REM sleep, can help optimize sleep quality. Practicing good sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and avoiding screens before bed, can improve sleep. Mindfulness practices, such as body scans and playing the day's film backwards, can help relax the mind and prepare for sleep. Keeping a dream journal and engaging in techniques to remember dreams can enhance dream recall and facilitate dream exploration. For the dream of the week, Laura reads a dream from a listener named Gordon, who experiences a profound sense of love for his daughter as he realizes he is coming to the end of his life. The dream mitigates the fear of dying through the overwhelming feeling of love. The conversation explores the connection between sleep, dreaming, and death, as well as the fear of death and its impact on sleep. Techniques for addressing death anxiety and finding meaning in life are discussed, emphasizing the importance of connection and love. "Dreamers, big dreamers in particular really need to step forward today. It's more important than ever, I think, to bring dreaming into the world." Dave and Laura interview Dr. Kelly Bulkeley about his book, The Spirituality of Dreaming: Unlocking the Wisdom of Our Sleeping Selves. They explore the idea that dreaming is not just about personal insight, but also about spiritual insight for ourselves, our communities, and the world. Dr. Bulkeley emphasizes the transformative and dynamic nature of dreams and the potential for dreaming to bring about change and growth in our lives. For the Dream of the Week, Kelly shares a dream that involves flying through a shopping mall with tv character Jeff Winger. The discussion explores the symbolism of Jeff Winger and the themes of growth, narcissism, relating to others and coming down to earth. To celebrate World Lucid Dreaming Day (12 April), we're replaying our interview with Robert Waggoner, a leading expert on lucid dreaming. One of the world's top lucid dreamers, Robert Waggoner, joins Dave and Laura for a fascinating journey into the often so-called “rare” dream state of lucid dreaming. But as Robert will show, it's not that rare for some people, and you can try it too. Author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self and Lucid Dreaming Plain and Simple (with Caroline McCready), Robert shares how he has had over a thousand lucid dreams since he discovered he could do it whilst at high school in the US on reading Carlos Castaneda's books about Don Juan. We hear what he has learned from his lucid dreams, from tips on becoming lucid in a dream to answers to some of his questions about the nature of consciousness, which he started to explore once he got bored with flying and walking through walls in his dreams. It turns out there's more to lucid dreaming than manipulating the dream reality, more than wish fulfilment, and certainly more than making yourself more productive. We look at the history of research into lucid dreaming. What is lucid dreaming, according to Robert Robert's own techniques and how to try this out for yourself. Lucid games of flying, walking through walls and having sex. How to stay lucid and not wake up. The impact of the film Inception on Lucid Dreaming Neuroscience studies on the state Robert's own principles of Lucid Dreaming and its gateway to the deeper state of amazing spiritual experiences and being connected to a larger awareness. For the Dream of the Week, Robert also shares his lucid dream in which his mother-in-law returns from the land of the dead with an important message for him. I get asked very frequently what my process is for producing a podcast episode, and in this episode of the podcast (a bit meta!!) I break it down for you. My Podcast process is quite simple: Come up with an overall topic for the episode. Generally this is either from questions I get asked throughout the week from clients and prospects or I might look for a topic on Google which is highly searched for. These are topics which I know will get traction because people are talking about the topic already. Once I've chosen my topic for the podcast, I'll do a quick bit of research and write down a bullet point list of what I want to speak about. This is where frameworks are quite helpful, so something like my "Silver Platter Patnership" Framework might be made up of 5 steps. So if I do a 2 minutes introduction and backstory, along with 2 minutes for each step (or bullet point) and then 2 minutes for an outro, that equates to a nice succint 14 minute long episode. I try and record monologues in one-take because I get into flow, and I'll only go back and re-record that short segment. Without thinking about it I send it to my awesome Podcast Editor, James Ede, and he normally has it back to me within 48 hours. This means I can get a very simple podcast episode up in a very short period of time. The other things to consider on your podcast are: Monologues vs Guest Interviews: I found when I was solely doing guest interviews my downloads were generally quite low because I was selecting relatively unknown people with small audiences and my guests weren't promoting the episode. When I switched to 3 monologues to every 1 guest interview my downloads went up fourfold and people enquiring after my lead magnets also shot up, plus the guest interviews got a lot more traction. Platform: Choosing the right platform is paramount, originally I was on Anchor.fm which was good enough, but I didn't find the distribution was as wide as I wanted it to be, when I switched to Podbean again the management of the podcast was easier but the downloads increased dramatically because of the wider distribution. Reviews: ASK PEOPLE FOR REVIEWS!!! Spring Clean: Spring clean your podcast periodically. During th e100th episode relaunch I went through and SEO optimised all of the episode titles and descriptions, removed some of the lesser downloaded episodes. Ordered the episodes into seasons. And again on doing all of this the downloads went up. Hope you found this helpful, let me know if you did!! Dream Answers to Dream Questions! A 14-year-old boy who was curious about his dreams asked two questions before going to sleep: “Can you dream in colour or in black and white?” And, “Do you need light to dream?” Laurel and Hardy helped bring answers that night, and those answers were unequivocal, funny, and meaningful, and a few decades later Damien Moore has come on the podcast to talk about that experience and some of his other fascinating dreams. Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer's life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we're expanding the format. In the last episode we heard about Yas's recurring dream of losing her children on the train, and its resolution. This week Damien's dream sparks a conversation about colour and humour in dreams, lucid dreams (Damien has had many lucid dreams) and the nature of consciousness itself. Laura and Dave explore the images and symbols of Damien's night-time world using Freudian, Jungian and other psychological and philosophical frameworks. As ever, whatever ideas and interpretations may be discussed, the dream always belongs to the dreamer, and Damien is a thoughtful and wise guest who has reflected deeply on his dreams. Your dreams are fascinating, too! Get in touch via the links below and tell us a dream you'd like to share. Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! Yas Floyer is a journalist and mother, and like any mother she worries about her kids (maybe with more reason that some people). So Yas brings the latest iteration of a long-recurring maternal anxiety dream into the Dream Lab to discuss it with Laura and Dave. We always get lots of questions about recurring dreams and how they evolve over time, so this is an opportunity to talk about recurrence, anxiety dreams, and what allows us to eventually let them go. Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer's life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we're expanding the format and spending this whole episode talking about Yas's dream of losing her children on the train (and the more recent resolution of that gut-wrenching scenario). Our second dreamer, Damien, will be featured in the next episode. In this episode, we discuss the literal interpretation of the dream, looking at the real-life trauma behind it, and the natural worries of a mother watching her kids grow towards independence. We also look at the symbolism of trains, treacherous descents, and the dramatization of separation anxiety, using Freudian, Jungian and other psychological frameworks to guide us. As ever, whatever ideas and interpretations may be discussed, the dream always belongs to the dreamer, and Yas has plenty of insight of her own. Who will you see as you approach the final exit? Dreams and visions at the end of life are significant and unique, according to research done at Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo, USA. These end-of-life experiences (ELE'S) include images and experiences of those we loved who have died before us, be they parents, partners or pets. They may also be opportunities to confront and release old trauma. Dave had the opportunity for a short interview with Dr Christopher Kerr, CEO and Chief Medical Officer at the Hospice, physician, researcher and author of Death is But a Dream, the book based on his and his team's research on end-of-life dreams and visions. How can your nightmare be your friend? Dr Leslie Ellis explains why nightmares might be shouting for your attention, showing what is unmetabolised in your psyche and maybe even telling you what is needed to help that process. “The antidote is often within the dream itself,” she says. She tells us about her embodied dreamwork method for “imagining the dream forward” to discover a new way through the dream, allowing it to complete in a way that doesn't disturb your sleep. As part of her mission to de-mystify nightmare treatment and dreamwork in general, Dr Ellis talks to us about her long experience in working with dreams and nightmares, including her doctoral research on treating the trauma-related dreams of refugees. “We are engines with millions of feedback loops… And dreams are a balancing process” We are joined by well-known U.K. Jungian analyst Dr Roderick Peters who's been working in the field of dreams for more than 40 years. We look at the Jungian perspective on dreaming and its symbolic world of archetypes, opposites and individual and collective consciousness. Roderick recalls a powerful dream that he had when he was aged 3 or 4 about the nature of individuation and the separation of a child's consciousness from that of its mother. This amazing dream has stayed with him all his life and set him on the path to studying his dreams on a daily basis since childhood. He also talks about his career as a doctor working in a sleep lab before he decided to become a Jungian psychoanalyst. Finally, Roderick joins in with offering interpretations for this episode's Dream of the Week, sent in from a listener who goes to a dream theatre and meets a famous actress. For Roderick as a Jungian, dreams are where we explore “the organs of our psyche through the archetypes.” Dr Roderick Peters has written several books including Living With Dreams published by Andre Deutsch. He lectures and has written many interesting papers which can be found on his website. His has a therapeutic practice in London and Surrey and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council. “Am I dreaming?” is the question you need to answer to become lucid in your dreams, and that question will also make you question what it really means to be awake. In this episode, Dave and Laura speak with educator, author and dream researcher Ryan Hurd, who teaches graduate level courses at the University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California, and is the driving force behind dreamstudies.org, an essential resource for anyone interested in dreams in general and lucid dreaming in particular. Ryan is interested in consciousness studies at the intersections of ecology, spirituality and material culture. His latest work is Lucid talisman: Forgotten lore. In an open, personal, and informative conversation, Ryan tells Dave and Laura about how he started out as an archaeologist but now searches for knowledge and treasure in the depths of consciousness as revealed through dreams. He shares some of his vast knowledge on lucid dreaming, including lucid dreaming induction (learning how to have more lucid dreams) and the use of totems and the lucid talisman. In the Dream of the Week, he shares a heart-warming dream in which he and his infant son find that his home's basement has become a huge, church-like space. With a background in both archaeology and dream research, Ryan currently teaches graduate level courses at University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California. We're taking a little break this week, so here's a recurrance of an episode from April 2023: Series 1, Episode 3 - Symbols in Dreams with Dr Nigel Hamilton. See you in the New Year! ___ The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Even today there are hundreds of books on the subject online. But should we be attached to specific meanings? Does a tooth or cat or a car come with some universal meaning attached that is the same for everyone? In this episode, Laura and Dave welcome Dr Nigel Hamilton aboard the Dream Boat to talk about personal and universal symbols in dreams and how he works with them as a psychotherapist. Nigel is a highly experienced therapist, teacher, researcher and one of the world's leading pioneers in dream interpretation techniques. He is the founder of one the world's top Transpersonal Psychotherapy colleges, the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, co-founder of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies and the former UK Representative of the Inayatiyya Sufi Order International. He has spent years studying and pioneering techniques for working with dream symbolism and his book Awakening Through Dreams: Journeys Through the Inner Landscape covers some of his fascinating discoveries. He teaches workshops and leads courses on spiritual approaches to psychotherapy at CCPE. In this episode, Dr Hamilton discusses the symbolism of colours, symbols of transformation in the alchemical model, and how we can discern the personal from the universal. For our “Dream of the Week” feature, Nigel shares three brief dreams which marked particular steps in his own process. Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! Beyond lucidity: For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself. In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. She has published and lectured widely about dreams and lucidity, and she is writing a new book called: "Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Love, Light and Lucid Dreaming From Beyond the Grave." What can you do when you wake up screaming, having revisited the harrowing scenes of a trauma which still haunts your nightmares? Linda Yael Schiller from Boston in the USA has developed the GAIA (Guided Active Imagination Approach) method to stop the endless cycle of nightmares for war trauma survivors and for anyone who suffers disturbing nightmares. We have talked about parasomnias - the official term for a variety of disturbed sleep patterns – and nightmare treatment with other guests, and in this episode, Laura and Dave talk to Linda about her work with PTSD and dreams, and how GAIA brings together best-practice trauma treatment and Jungian active imagination to turn PTSD into PTSG: Post-Traumatic Spiritual Growth. Linda's method is systematic and clear, and has a lot in common with the Waking Dream Process, for those who know it or have listened to our episode about it. She takes Dave through the GAIA method in one of his dreams… listen to find out what they discover! **TRIGGER WARNING** This episode contains references to sexual assault and sexual abuse. It's the end of the second series already! It's our twentieth episode and time to answer some more of your questions (and in one case, have a second go at a previous question). In this episode: I think I'm having nightmares but I don't remember them. Can people with aphantasia (who don't see mental images) dream, and work with their dreams? My dreams are often set in places from my childhood. Is this common and what does it mean? And Dave puts a question (about dreams of labyrinths) from an unusual source to Laura, which opens up a conversation about some of the subjects we're going to be looking at in Series 3 and beyond! TW: My guest today is Debra Blackman. Debra tells us about sexual abuse that happened to her as a child, so if that's likely to be difficult for you to hear, please do switch off from this episode.Growing up in a family with an affluent facade, Debra suffered in silence from sexual abuse by a family member until she was 17. Her mother failed to see her plight. When the family moved home, Debra experienced bullying and isolation, and struggled to face the situation she was in. The abuse from her father reached a breaking point when she was 18, and she finally stood up to him, leading to her being kicked out of her own home with just £5 to her name. It's not surprising that this difficult start took Debra down a toxic path in her relationships over the next few years, but today she is a top flight banker and CEO, providing an example of how it's possible to overcome even the worst kind of experiences and build a life you can love.Debra tells us how her behaviour reflected what was happening to her, how therapy changed her mindset about her life, and how she hasn't allowed the abuse to define her. She also says how hard it was to walk away from the abuse when she was very young, and acknowledges that she wasn't ready to tackle her trauma until the time was right. Who is Debra Blackman? Debra is the owner of Viessentially, an exectuive PA service. Do you know what bulking and cutting is? Has your teenager asked you to change what you feed the family, veering between carb-loading and keto-style meal requests? If you're worrying about your sporty teenager's attitude to food, this episode is worth a listen. My guests are Kate Shilland and Fran Taylor, registered nutritionists who have seen how teenage athletes are influenced by TikTok creators to resort to sometimes extreme measures to get 'the perfect physique'. We talked about toxic masculinity, self-esteem and body image in young men and teenage boys in last week's episode, and this is the perfect follow up conversation for anyone who's 14 year old is asking for a gym membership and scrutinising their diet. Kate and Fran explain how good nutrition will help boys as well as girls build the muscle they need for strong athletic performance, without the need for special powders and supplements. Who are Kate and Fran? Kate & Fran are Registered Sports & Public Health Nutritionists with over 15 years' experience in helping people understand how to fuel their bodies better in order to perform better. They work with teen athletes and their parents, and have teenage athletes of their own; they say the consistent thing they see is that there's a lack of good sports nutrition advice for young people, and an overload of terrible information, especially on social media, that can be challenging to navigate. That's why they started Performance Canteen, a go-to resource of easy to follow, science-backed facts on sports nutrition and practical recipes and tips on how to make healthier choices. The aim is always to make the healthy option the easy option, to arm young athletes and their parents with the knowledge and skills needed to build the best versions of themselves, whatever the goals may be.Their recommendations and resources are based on feedback from teens, parents, teachers & coaches, with the aim of providing everyone with the same good information. ...By popular demand! As Dave and Laura come towards the end of the second series, they consider two listeners' dreams through the lenses of different interpretations. Trainee psychotherapist Kit presents her fascinating maid of honour dream, in which the most beautiful silk dress she is going to wear to the wedding of a childhood friend is stolen and worn by her father. How dare he! Dave and Laura explore the wonderful imagery of the operation of Union, the Royal Wedding, or coniunctio, through the lenses of Jung, Freud, and the DRI's Waking Dream technique. We journey through gorgeous conch shells, royal blue velvet cushions in an Uber and dingy basement bars, to look at the delicate balance between masculine and feminine energy and what this means for dreamer Kit. Then Ayurvedic doctor and osteopath Angela joins the Dream Lab to present her magnificent seven-foot Australian shaman dream. Dave and Laura accompany her on her dreamtime spiritual sojourn as the dreamer returns to the family home to meet her real-life friend and mystic teacher before she encounters a beautiful indigenous Australian hunter in the attic. She then returns to eat clams, another powerful spiritual image of pilgrimage for the dreamer, with her sister. Dave and Laura look through the various lenses: Jung, alchemy, the elements and the amazing Waking Dream Technique to unearth interpretations. What would it be like for the dreamer to become the hunter? And what happens when she eats the clams? But as the lenses turn Dave rightly reminds us at the end of Dream Lab that despite these interpretative explorations the dream always belongs to the dreamer. Enjoy! As the mother of both a teenage girl AND boy, I've seen how both of them have absorbed the messages in society about toxic masculinity, and I've been shocked at how polarising those are. I know the effect of attitudes towards women from my own experiences and my daughter's; but I've also seen how damaging some of the narrative around that can be to boys and young men.Boys and young men across the UK are struggling; research shows a decline in mental health and well-being, increased isolation, a lack of safe spaces and trusted relationships, and a higher risk of engaging in gangs, violence, substance misuse, and weapon-carrying amongst boys since Covid. This is a hugely sensitive issue, so I'm going to say straight up, if anything we discuss in this episode feels difficult for you, please do raise it with me – I really think this is a conversation that needs to be opened up much more widely.Instead of toxic masculinity, Hayley talks about healthy masculinities. She says it's an area of civil society that is often misunderstood. What is Toxic Masculinity?I think Toxic masculinity is a phrase that's thrown around without too much thought, and with a certain amount of anger. I get why, and it's hugely important that the issue of attitudes towards women and girls is continuously raised - as the mother of a teenage girl it feels really scary sometimes. But we also need to consider the impact on boys. Hayley Roffey is a mum who has been working with children and young people for 2 decades, through the Global Fund for Children – she instigated their healthy masculinities initiative when she realised that there was an alarming suicide trend amongst boys and young men. Hayley tells us about the Healthy Masculinities programme and how it aims to change the messages boys are getting so that they can take responsibility for themselves in a way which supports them to be authentic. We also talk about bullying at school, acceptance versus challenge as a parent, and the joy of having really ugly braces as a teenager. Climate expert and campaigner Mark Ballabon says that today's teenagers feel under immense pressure, and have a lot of anxiety around the state of our planet. His book, Home, is described as a coming of age story for the Greta Thunberg generation. He talks to me about how teens are feeling, why some of them shut down conversations about the environment, and what we - as parents - can do to help them work out how they feel about climate change and activism. 2:30 - Mark describes his own teenage years as "a bit of a car crash". He was sent to a very academic school and found it very stressful. Mark talks about academic pressure and how it made him very introspective and self-conscious. He says it was this that eventually made him stop caring what other people thought, and start questioning the bigger issues of life. 7:15 - Mark talks about how we all compare ourselves to others, especially in the world of social media. He says "every single relationship that you will ever form in your life depends upon your relationship with yourself."10:00 - Why empathy is so important for authenticity, and how important it is to understand each other. It's why Mark used young editors from all over the world to help him write his book. 14:00 - Why we must never - as parents - use the same slang that our kids use. 16:30 - How to listen well so we can empathise with our teenagers, and how to show up with our own authentic feelings and model emotional maturity. 25:45 - "We don't understand people because we're always assuming that we do." A brilliant quote about what stops us communicating effectively and understanding our kids. 28:20 - How should we cope with our teenagers' fears over climate change.34:00 - Are some forms of climate activism detrimental to the cause?40:00 - What more can we do individually to save the planet?Find out more about Mark Ballabon Read Mark's book HomeMore teenage parenting from Helen Wills:Helen wills is a teen mental health podcaster and blogger at Actually Mummy, a resource for midlife parents of teens. Young maverick entrepreneur Morgan Boult was a rebel at school and told he would never amount to anything. But at 19 and Managing Director of a successful call centre, already in its 6th year of trading and incorporated when he was aged 13, he is the epitome of proving everyone wrong. But there is more to Morgan Boult's story. Here is someone amazingly unique and earmarked for bigger, greater things. During a difficult time at school, he was a rebel who saw a tough time growing up. Add to this his mother who was a headmistress and father, a successful actuary, the pressure on him was enormous for perfect school years and a steady adolescence. But in true Sir Richard Branson style, Morgan had other ideas. Forming his first business at school selling sweets he showed business savvy almost immediately expanding beyond schoolboy expectations; getting a card machine contract with a credit card company, opening a fully functional shop in his parent's garage, and because of demand bringing two rucksacks a time full of products to school.Morgan talks about how - just because you're a square peg in a round hole at school - it doesn't mean your teenager is going to be a dropout. Morgan's parents struggled when he was constantly in trouble at school, but he says he was always going to be fine - it's just that school didn't work for him. Morgan gives advice to parents on the best way to support a teenager who isn't conforming, and says not to lose faith in them.More about Morgan Boult: Morgan's business Hero PA Morgan on LinkedIn Atelier 21 SchoolAlso listen to this episode with Hazel Davis, a teenage runaway who's now a successful journalist. Trigger warning: episode deals with suicidal ideation. Suzanne also briefly mentions the impact on her life of being raped. My guest in this episode is Suzanne Alderson. When Suzanne's 14 year old daughter Izzy became suicidal, following a period of sustained bullying, Suzanne found herself in a desperate place. While her daughter was immediately wrapped in professional care, Suzanne found that there was no support available to help her or her husband make sense of it all and give their child the best kind of care. One night on suicide watch, she decided if she ever got through this time, she would ensure no other family had to navigate this journey alone. Suzanne has since set up a digital community to try and help other families facing their child's mental illness. Mike Parker tells the story of how he told his family he was gay. It's the warmest story, with a family who were totally accepting, and yet Mike's vulnerability is palpable. He takes us back to that age, when he was terrified of his parents' reaction, and takes us on that journey he went on. This podcast is for anyone who is loved, but doesn't know how they're going to tell their family the truth about their lives. It's also for their parents; Mike gives tips on how to approach your child if you think they might have something to tell you, and how to support them when they do. This week's guest Jill Grimes is a MD in a US college (like a university GP), so she's well placed to talk about staying healthy at university. But first we talk about popularity in school (spoiler - neither of us was in the popular gang in our teens), why even the popular people don't feel confident in school, and how that all changes when you hit university and everyone is in the same boat. Once you get to university, being clever is cool, playing a musical instrument is impressive, and people don't judge you on what you're good at. We also get some advice from Jill on homesickness at university, and how we can support our kids to stay (relatively) healthy while they're away from home. Here's a breakdown of our conversation:2:30 - Popularity at school, and rushing through things instead of enjoying them4:15 - Please excuse my dog Rocket, the postman triggered him!7:00 - Letting your teen go and how to prepare yourself9:40 - Social anxiety as a teenager15:30 - Sorting out acne as a teenager (listen to ep. 59 for more on medication for acne)22:10 - How to handle homesickness at university. Tip 1: Don't go home in the first 6 weeks!35:45 - What to do when you start feeling ill after Freshers38:15 - What if your child gets a tattoo? (As an aside - how to handle piercings that won't heal). What to consider, the truth about tattoo colours, and how difficult it is to remove a tattoo.50:30 - What to do about a cartilage piercing that won't healWho is Jill Grimes?Jill Grimes, MD, FAAFP, is an American nationally recognized medical media expert, award-winning author, and proud mum of two daughters.
