Why do we dream? Is lucid dreaming real? How can dreams be used for therapy? Does cheese really give us nightmares? In this episode, we discuss the neuroscience and psychology of: • REM sleep, and how it puts our brain in the ideal state for creating dreams • Why dreams might be a way for our brains to stop non-visual senses taking over our brains when we sleep • The links between recurring dreams and trauma, and how external stimuli influence the things we dream about We speak with renowned author, dreamworker, and poet Rodger Kamenetz about why, even if lucid dreaming is real, we might not want to interrupt the problem-solving, memory-consolidating work our brains undertake when we dream. And we talk to teacher and psychotherapist Dr. Leslie Ellis about how she incorporates dreams into therapeutic practices, and discuss why dreaming is so difficult to study. Plus: we take a trip through time, exploring all the world-changing inventions, discoveries, and works of art that were inspired by dreams. ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neuroscientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... How can your nightmare be your friend? Dr Leslie Ellis explains why nightmares might be shouting for your attention, showing what is unmetabolised in your psyche and maybe even telling you what is needed to help that process. “The antidote is often within the dream itself,” she says. She tells us about her embodied dreamwork method for “imagining the dream forward” to discover a new way through the dream, allowing it to complete in a way that doesn't disturb your sleep. As part of her mission to de-mystify nightmare treatment and dreamwork in general, Dr Ellis talks to us about her long experience in working with dreams and nightmares, including her doctoral research on treating the trauma-related dreams of refugees. And she shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for the Focusing work of Eugene Gendlin. For the Dream of the Week, she shares a delightful dream of a red fox that may or may not be as tame as it appears. -- Your dreams are delightful, too! We speak a bit about trauma and working bodily with trauma events and also working with the dreams that can accompany unprocessed trauma. We spent most of our conversation talking about specific ways of working with dreams experientially, including getting help in the dream, retelling the dream from the inside of the dream, and sensing how the dream could carry itself forward. We also muse a bit about the profound and intriguing nature of dreams and how they extend beyond our way of understanding them. Nightmares: what's their cause and cure? Our guest is clinician and dream demystifier, Dr. Leslie Ellis. Nightmares seem to be caused by anything upsetting whether in recent life or from long ago. Luckily, we don't need to know what is causing a nightmare to work with it. Dreaming helps us metabolize emotions but nightmares can wake us up, interrupting the process. She describes a dream as a picture of our current or habitual nervous system condition (ala Eugene Gendlin). It can be helpful to rescript the dream or change the ending in an environment where we feel calm and safe. Dr. Ellis describes bias control and aspects of Stephen Porges's polyvagal theory. BIO: Leslie Ellis is author of A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy and offers online dreamwork certification to mental health professionals. Her experiential approach to engaging with dreams is based on focusing, an approach that privileges the body's felt sense in the exploration of dreams. Developed by Eugene Gendlin, a focusing approach includes finding help in a dream and bias control. Leslie has expanded on this method to develop an embodied approach to treating nightmares, and recently published a paper in the journal Dreaming on nightmares and the nervous system. If you struggle with getting enough sleep, you aren't alone. Keep in mind: six hours or less per night on an ongoing basis seems about as bad as getting zero for two days straight. As much as 41% of adults in the U.S. report short sleep, and as much as 84% of high school students report short sleep. Worse yet, 50-70 million U.S. citizens (perhaps more) qualify for a formal diagnosis of sleep disorder, ranging from insomnia to sleep apnea. All of this should create a sense of urgent compassion for ourselves, each other, and the world. That has to do in part with the many mental and physical ailments connected with sleep disruption. Not getting enough quality sleep AND dream seems to go together with a concerning list of illnesses, including cognitive decline. Moreover, a lack of quality sleep and dream can limit our skill and our potential in life, leaving us less capable to take skillful, creative, wise, compassionate, and beautiful action in our lives, on behalf of our own wellbeing and also on behalf of the whole community of life. Sleep and dream go fully together with our life and our world, and the problems we see in our own life and world thus go together with the crisis of sleep and dream we now face. The present dialogue goes together with the dialogue with psychologist and dream tender Dr. Leslie Ellis, released as Episode 44. If you missed that one, I encourage you to check it out.In the present episode, Dr. Rubin Naiman joins us to contemplate the dangerous wisdom of sleep and dreams, reflecting on some of the things we need to begin to open to and keep in mind if we want to allow the power of sleep and dreams help us to heal self and world at the same time. But the episode begins with some reflections on Hermes from your friendly neighborhood soul doctor. Hermes is, after all, a guide of souls, a lord of dreams, and a magician with the capacity to carry lead us into the realm of sleep and dream. Then we move into a delightful dialogue that I think you will enjoy. You can find Rubin's bio and contact info below. Rubin Naiman, PhD, FAASM, is a psychologist, author, Fellow in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Arizona's Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine where he has taught seminars on sleep and dreams to physicians for twenty-five years. Rubin pioneered the development of integrative approaches to sleep and dreams, integrating scientific with depth psychological, transpersonal, and spiritual perspectives. He has taught and consulted about sleep and dream matters in a dozen countries around the globe.Over the years, his work has included training doctoral psychology students, dreamwork with hospice patients and survivors, and establishing and directing sleep and dream health programs for Canyon Ranch and Miraval Resorts. Rubin has also served as a creativity consultant for the entertainment industry, which included travel with a world-renowned rock band for two years.Rubin is the author of numerous consumer and professional works on sleep and dreams including Healing Night: The Science and Spirit of Sleeping, Dreaming and Awakening, Hush: A Book of Bedtime Contemplations, Healthy Sleep, an audio program co-authored with Andrew Weil.More recently, he published a seminal paper in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences entitled, Dreamless: The Silent Epidemic of REM Sleep Loss as well as Oxford University Press Medical text chapters entitled, Dream Medicine and The Future of Sleep Medicine. In his spare time, Rubin is an avid hiker and amateur photographer. We speak about nightmares and the nervous system using an approach combining polyvagal theory and embodied experiential approaches including Gendlin's practice of Focusing. She argues that learning to find a sense of safety is not just necessary for treatment to proceed but that the sense of safety is the treatment itself. Dr. Ellis also speaks about her work on teaching clinicians to welcome their clients' dreams in therapy including why clinicians are so intimidated by dreams. These simple techniques can also be used when sharing dreams with friends and partners. Such dream-sharing has been shown to increase a sense of intimacy and trust in the relationship. We end with Leslie helping me to unpack my dream of being a zombie in a compound and seeing a dancing half-mechanical elephant. Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today I speak with Dr. Leslie Ellis, a leading expert in the use of somatic approaches in psychotherapy, in particular for working with dreams, nightmares and the effects of trauma. She is the author of A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy (https://www.amazon.com/Clinicians-Guide-Dream-Therapy-Implementing-ebook/dp/B07S2T5MJ4) and offers many training opportunities in embodied, experiential dreamwork based on her book. Dr. Ellis discusses the value of engaging clients in dream work, as it helps point out salient emotional concerns, helps limit biased conscious editing, provides new perspectives on issues, and can serve as a diagnostic tool. Dreams often pick up on things which affect us during the day, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Dr. Ellis details how one could understand key life events through paying attention to trends in dreams and lends theories on how dreams may be predictive of future events. She also discusses indigenous populations' approaches to dreaming and theories on how the world may be dreaming through us. As a young actor, my first big break was being cast as the 'Magical Mr. Mistoffelees' in a brand new national touring company of the blockbuster Broadway musical CATS. While I was 'living the dream' during those years in the 1980s, a nightmare called HIV/AIDS was taking thousands of lives from us. As a company, we wanted to do 'something,' so in 1987, we organized one of the first large-scale benefits performances by a touring company to help those affected by HIV. Amazingly, we raised over $36K in one night. Fast forward to today, and another viral pandemic is here. A few months ago, one of my former CATS castmates reached out to say, "Anyone want to do it again?" And so, we did. "With Love, Now and Forever! Cats4CovidRelief" premiered on October 23 and has so far raised over $21,000 to help those in the theater community affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The video event is currently available on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/TKmFNBpsj2o Today, I'm talking to two of my closest CATS castmates, Grammy Award-winner Leslie Ellis and two-time OutMusic Award-winner Matt Zarley, about this recent company reunion, collaborating on this special, uplifting video event, and reminiscing about the experience that was CATS. "The Cable RDK" at The TV of Tomorrow Show 2013[itvt] is pleased to present an audio recording of "The Cable RDK," a keynote fireside chat at TVOT 2013. The session was described in the show brochure as follows:"In conversation with prominent cable-technology journalist, Leslie Ellis, a panel of senior executives from Comcast and Time Warner Cable will cast light on the significance of, and the roadmap for, cable's Reference Design Kit (RDK). The RDK--officially defined as "an integrated software bundle that can be accessed by operators in need of a software stack for set-top devices" and as a "fully tested and integrated system [that] runs on QAM, IP and Hybrid devices"--was originated by Comcast, but has since been embraced by Time Warner Cable and is attracting the interest of many other MSO's that are seeking to implement a cross-platform UI/UX that can be quickly brought to market. Issues to be addressed include: What exactly is the RDK and what is its significance? Why was it developed? How exactly does it work? Why is it generating so much interest? What are the advantages and risks/challenges for MSO's that adopt the RDK? And how will it be adapted/implemented in Europe and other global markets?"Participating in the session were:Leslie Ellis, Principal, Translation Please/Columnist, Multichannel News (Moderator)Mike Hayashi, EVP of Architecture, Development and Engineering, Time Warner CableSteve Reynolds, SVP of Premises Technology, ComcastMatthew Zelesko, SVP of Technology, Time Warner Cable

Dr. Leslie Ellis teaches therapists to learn how to explore dreams with their clients. Natural empathy and curiosity can be used by anyone wanting to support a client or a friend with a dream they are curious about. We talked in depth with Leslie on Aug 8, 2020 about nightmares, so we skip the background talk and go right to Leslie's latest dreams and interests. We speak about the power of dream shards (aka snippets) and encourage listeners to record even their smallest dreams. We then shift to somatics and the "felt sense" which is the basis for the famous dreamer's "aha". We talk about Leslie's specialty of trauma therapy; what are the hallmarks of PTSD, and how can dreams mark that the condition is waning? We end with a plea for people to get help with their nightmares especially if they are having suicidal thoughts. BIO: Dr. Leslie Ellis is an author, teacher, speaker and clinical dreamworker.
