This week, Colin talks to Stephen Harvey, Principal Safety Business Partner at Moreton Bay Regional Council in Brisbane, about some of the practical ways in which he is applying his learnings over recent years into the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS We must endeavour to make documentation and instructional materials accessible not for the professionals who write them, but for the users at the end of the line. Communication skills are at the heart of business. If we can engage others, then the messages flow far more freely. To create change in safety, we need forward thinking, creative thinking, and the bravery to execute these decisions. Professionals can better engage if they form and nurture a narrative that allows others to realise the importance of why safety matters. BEST MOMENTS 'In terms of culture, it's the greatest thing we ever did' 'We found that there are no real methods for channelling risks' 'Break down the barriers and really engage' 'Safety is part of the job' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449 Stephen Harvey LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-harvey1888/?originalSubdomain=au ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.' This is the belief that Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into industry. Colin works at a strategic level with company owners and board members. He helps business leaders establish and achieve their health and safety ambitions. He has developed a number of leading competency improvement programmes that are delivered across industry and his strengths are his ability to take a practical approach to problem-solving and being able to liaise at all levels within an organisation. Colin also runs a company that vets contractors online and a network that develops and support H&S consultancies to become better businesses. Colin chairs the Construction Dust Partnership, an industry collaboration directly involving many organisations, including the Health and Safety Executive. He is a Post Graduate Tutor at Strathclyde University and a highly sought-after health and safety speaker and trainer. Tonight's special guest is Francine Anne Umaru from Crofton, Maryland, also known as 'Sistah Fran', was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Englewood, New Jersey. She is proud of her Jamaican heritage. Francine was saved by the pen at a tender age, while suffering from childhood sexual, physical, and verbal abuse by her biological father. "When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I was emotionally, physically, and sexually abused by my biological father," she says. "My mother was complicit and is still married to him. The home I grew up in felt like a place in hell." Francine continues, "The unresolved trauma and toxic stress I carried manifested into Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which I struggle with every day. I started my healing journey in October 2020. I have been seeing a trauma-informed therapist twice a week since then. I am still a work in progress and healing is not a linear process." Her passion for poetry has continued into adulthood. As the founder of 'Break the Silence and Bloom', she carries out her mission to facilitate and normalize conversations around child abuse and neglect; to encourage adult survivors to share their truth in safe spaces and promote healing so they can bloom. "In July 2017, I published my first book of 30 poems, 'Break the Silence & Bloom: My Poetic Testimonies'. There is a process between breaking your silence and blooming -- it is called "healing". We cannot bloom until we do the inner work first."

He said that he was lucky as the pandemic wasn't as severe in Thailand, where he is based. Anand said that given the cooking experiences of people during the lockdown, professional chefs would be seen with more respect.

How do you start to ‘break' a bad habit? First of all that terminology -- 'break' a bad habit -- we need to change that. Think about how long it took for you to ingrain that as a habit. It didn't just happen overnight. You've been doing it over and over for a time, you don't just stop doing it overnight. It's something that, in the words that I've been taught in my coaching -- you start to untangle a bad habit. If you've ever tried to take apart something that is tangled, what's the easiest way to start to undo it? You untangle it bit by bit. If you try and yank, it gets even tighter and knots even tighter. Think about that as the same with your habits. You have to unravel them bit by bit, piece by piece. Otherwise, it just tightens even more. And so if you want to start to untangle a habit that you don't like, you go back to the Fogg Behavior Model. In this episode, I break down the steps on how to untangle your bad habits by understanding how they are formed in the first place. This reverse engineering process is based on the Fogg Behavior Model that I have shared in our previous episodes, so please make sure to check it out first if you haven't yet.
Ahead of Black Friday, sustainable accessories and footwear brand Allbirds is flipping tradition and is calling for consumers to ‘Break tradition, not the planet’. Allbirds: Fridays For Future Instead of slashing prices, Allbirds will be raising them and doubling its commitment to sustainability. On 27th November, all prices across its entire collection will increase by £1 and be matched by £1 by the brand, with the additional proceeds going directly to Fridays For Future, the youth-led international climate movement founded by climate activist Greta Thunberg. This continuation on urging consumers to consider buying better follows the brand’s initiative for 2019, which saw all of its UK stores closed for Black Friday, instead opting to provide complimentary workshops for consumers providing education around their buying decisions and how these have a long-lasting impact. The core belief of the brand is to showcase how a business can be used as a force for good and contribute to positive change and this continued reversal of the famed retail holiday is an ongoing proof point as to how consumers and brands need to and can take responsibility for tomorrow’s future. As a certified B Corp, Allbirds believe that business can be a force for good, and balancing purpose with profit is the future of commerce. To successfully tackle climate change, we need to collectively reduce our carbon impact and protect the earth’s resources. With a little more consciousness around how we consume, we can all tread lighter on the planet. About Allbirds Allbirds is a New Zealand-American footwear company that uses a direct-to-consumer approach and is aimed at designing environment friendly footwear. Allbirds’ first shoe was the Wool Runner, which is made from New Zealand superfine marino wool. More about Irish Tech News and Business Showcase here. In the 100th episode of the @VersusHistory Podcast, we are joined by author Richard Kreitner to discuss his brand new book 'BREAK IT UP: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of America’s Imperfect Union' published by Little, Brown and Company. We discuss a range of issues in the podcast, including the origins of political union in America, the threats that the union has faced throughout history and its future. The book has received outstanding reviews, including this: "If you thought disunion was an invention of the slave South and is long dead and buried, think again. In Break It Up, Richard Kreitner offers a powerful revisionist account of the troubled history of the American nation, showing how secessionist movements have made their appearance at numerous times, and in numerous parts of the country. They are again proliferating today - a reflection of our polarized politics and culture and our failure to make the existing Union benefit all Americans." — Eric Foner, Columbia University, author of The Fiery Trial. Richard studied philosophy at McGill University in Montreal. Since 2012, he has been affiliated with The Nation as intern, editor, and writer and has published essays, reviews, and articles in Slate, Raritan, The Baffler, The Boston Globe, The New York Review of Books, and The New York Times. His previous book was 'BOOKED: A Traveler’s Guide to Literary Locations Around the World (2019)'. For terms of use, please visit www.versushistory.com

Majo Molfino, Stanford University-trained designer and women’s leadership expert, joins us to talk about how women can improve their self-worth and build creative confidence. As children, most girls are to "be good" and learn that conforming to societal norms leads to praise. However, that usually leads to a lifelong quest for unattainable perfection and comes at the expense of them sacrificing their unique voice. As the daughter of immigrants, Majo wanted to make her parents proud more than anything, but realized that she also wanted to live her life on her own terms. In this episode, she teaches us how to find our own unique feminine power and dismantle old rules once and for all. Her new book, 'Break the Good Girl Myth', comes out on July 28th. This week we've got writer and director Shaz Bennett on the program to talk about Kathryn Bigelow's classic, Point Break. As Shaz says on the show, this is the movie she most wishes she had directed. She and April also discuss Shaz's newest film, Alaska Is a Drag, which follows an aspiring drag queen turned boxer stuck working at a cannery in Alaska. The two of them dissect the masterful directing of Bigelow during the visceral chase scenes. They look at the unconventional casting of Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. They praise the performance and genius of Lori Petty. And Shaz elaborates on being yourself while directing, and being close to your actors on set. April has a special connection with this film as well, having written a retrospectivefor Rolling Stone last year. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch Point Break. With April Wolfe with Shaz Bennett. Brenda Tracy is a catalyst and agent of change. She joins The Yogi Roth Show, as their conversation will take you inside the world of Brenda, as she travels to college campuses year-round, impacting college athletes to Set The Expectation.Brenda, a survivor of a gang rape on a college campus is now inspiring and empowering student-athletes to #SetTheExpectation to end sexual and relationship violence on college campuses.Over the last two years, thousands of high school and college student-athletes have embraced her campaign and most recently a conference has embraced her mission. Among them have been Stanford, San Jose State, Michigan, The Opening Football Camp and many more. Leading the way was Stanford Head Coach David Shaw, who dedicated the first ever college football game to bringing awareness to sexual and relationship violence on campus, and the Cardinal titled that game in 2017 the #SetTheExpectation game. In 2018, other teams have followed Stanford's lead. Brenda and Yogi's powerful conversation unpacks what it means to be a “survivor,” as well as how Brenda was able to find an immense amount of strength within herself to create positivity for others. Brenda is forced to tear herself apart and relive the details of her assault every time she shares her story, but she has found comfort in knowing that by her opening up, she's helping others get through their worst moments and preventing future assaults from happening. Her goal is to create a new societal norm that doesn't allow for sexual assault or violence to take place, and redefine what manhood is by showing college athletes that it's okay to be respectful to women. Episode 20 I sat down with Osher Gunsberg (@osher_gunsberg), celebrity Australian TV host, who shares his story and in particular his battle with mental illness & addiction. You may also know him as Andy G or Andrew G which he previously went by.With the gift of the gab, blonde locks and contagious smile it would seem Osher was always destined to entertain or find his way into the world of television but just how did a kid with anxiety end up hosting live TV in front of millions of viewers? What toll did that take on his mental and physical health and what learnings does he have to share? Well, that's exactly what this episode is all about. Osher came over to my place in Bondi and we had a really open and honest conversation over a Turmeric Latte (haha) about what he went through behind the scenes including some terrible lows as well as some hugely positive learnings and life-changing experiences. The timing of this episode is absolutely perfect with Osher's book 'Back after the Break' launching next week. If you are an Australian and know Osher I think this episode will give you insight into the actual man behind the man the microphone that you have seen on TV for so many years. If you are from overseas, I'm sure you will still find this episode tremendously interesting with many take-home messages. In this episode we cover:Where Osher grew up & what his childhood was likeWhat drew him towards a career in Television & radio which ultimately saw him hosting some of the most viewed shows ever in Australia (Australian Idol, The Bachelor)When alcohol crept into his life & how it became a problemHow he has learned to deal with Mental illness (paranoia, OCD, anxiety etc)How he has handled alcohol addictionHis battle with weight, why he went vegan & how he ended up on the cover of Men's Healthmuch much moreOh, I forgot to mention Osher is vegan and has been for essentially over a decade...and he's hugely entertaining, so naturally, so as a good host should I let him do a lot of the talking! Also, Osher kindly had me on his show a little while back - if you haven't listened to that episode you can here.
