This is the 1st episode in a new series called "19 Insights About". In this series, I'll be spending about 20 minutes per episode featuring just one musical artist to introduce them to a new audience of music lovers and I'll also be sharing rare and lesser known info about the artists for those who are already die hard fans of the band. The first band that I'll be featuring is Staind. I was just 16 when they released their album Break The Cycle back in 2001 and its lead single "It's Been Awhile" became a massive global hit. It's one of the first albums that I truly loved and with the band releasing new music now for the first time in over a decade I thought this is the perfect band to kickoff this series with. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dustin Collins over Zoom video! Momentum continues to build for Billboard No. 1 singer-songwriter and Georgia-born Dustin Collins, who recently announced his forthcoming Working Man album, as he signs with New Vision Artist Management's Mike Kraski and New Revolution Entertainment's Jeff Solima. Kraski began his career in sales and distribution at CBS Records and eventually made his way to Sony Music Nashville, where he worked with Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Montgomery Gentry among many others, and was eventually elevated to executive VP and general manager for the Nashville division. In 2003, Kraski left Sony and launched an artist friendly label that was aptly named Equity Records. As President and CEO, he launched the career of Little Big Town. Since 2007, Kraski has worked in artist management, consulting and music publishing at Tenacity Management and at M-Pact Music Group and recently partnered with legendary artist manager John Dorris to launch New Vision Artist Management.Solima, whose career started at Music Matters, who managed Tracy Lawrence (16 of 17 singles were all No. 1) and Clay Walker (debut single No. 1), opened the multi-award-winning Hitsquad Promotions in 1993. In 2006, he co-founded New Revolution with partner Rob Dalton, and in 2008, he co-founded Bigger Picture Promotions with partner Michael Powers. Bigger Picture became the No. 5 record label in 18 months, setting the No. 1 record at the time of 9 consecutive No. 1 singles, and launched Craig Campbell, Chris Janson, and relaunched Chris Cagle, Uncle Kracker's “Smile,” and Kid Rock. New Revolution clients have included Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert, Martina McBride, Lee Brice, Gloriana, Uncle Kracker, Jesse James Decker, among others, while delivering Emerson Drive's only No. 1 with “Moments” and relaunching Big & Rich with four consecutive Top 15 singles.Produced by industry veterans Buddy Cannon (Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Reba McEntire) and Bill McDermott (Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Brad Paisley), Working Man is slated for release this summer from DCDL Entertainment. A portion of proceeds from the lead single and album will benefit GUMI (Glad You Made It) Camp USA. GUMI focuses on providing U.S. veterans with the tools they need to help them heal after deployment overseas and enable them to re-enter society. Working Man follows Collins' latest album, It's Been Awhile, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers South Central Albums chart. His independent single “Cold Dead Hands” ascended to No. 1 on the Billboard Singles Sales chart. Collins also earned a slot on Aaron Watson's Vaquero Tour and has opened for Tanya Tucker, Shenandoah, Clay Walker, Chris Janson, Kane Brown and many more.We want to hear from you! The boys are joined by Gabe Hostetler this week to take a trip back to middle school, which is about the time when people thought "It's Been Awhile" by Staind was a good song. This is a doozy of a season finale as all three of the fellas livd, laughd, and lovd mightily during the episode. Much time is spent poking fun at the ripped-off Korn riffs of early Staind, but the hosts do eventually talk about "It's Been Awhile", coming to the conclusion that the song is just a gray, flavorless pile of slop.

With some help from Fred Durst's troll magic, Staind became one of the most popular bands around the time they released their single, It's Been Awhile. It's still their most played song on Spotify. But some time has passed since their breakthrough album Break the Cycle and frontman, Aaron Lewis (not to be confused with C.S Lewis) has gone full MAGA. Does this change the way we see this album? We also look at how important tracklist order is and so, I have created Staind The Holy Gift - a reordering of the songs from Break the Cycle that, in my opinion, flows much better. Give it a listen and let us know what you think! In addition to my world famous Shawn Mullins impression, of course we ask the big question. Is the studio version of Outside as good as the live acoustic one featuring Fred Durst? Bon Appétit. Ravi Duggal has been working with young people for many years; whether as a team leader with the Princes Trust or his current work at Develop Bedford. In this episode of Beds Blab, we get to learn about another project Ravi is involved in, working at RAF Henlow with a youth club. What lessons has Ravi learnt about how to engage and inspire learners? Play this episode and find out. Techie stuff: This interview was recorded in the same way as episode 4; two dynamic cardioid microphones recording into a Zoom H4n. Headphones were used and a Behringer headphone amplifier was connected to the Zoom. The two mics were held on table-mic-stands and these stands were sat on blocks of foam to help stop knocks and vibrations getting into the recordings.Ravi is recording into the highly recommended ATR2100 dynamic mic while I record into a much cheaper-by-price JTS/TM929 dynamic mic. Ravi speaks about 15cm from his mic and seems to sound quite clear. I try to use the podcast-advised mic technique of speaking a fist's-width from the mic and talking past the mic rather than directly at it. I think that I sound a bit "muddy" at times. Whether this is due to the recording or this is just a feature of my voice, I'm not sure.I edited out a few "erms" but I was surprised at how little background noise I could hear. When I was recording I saw a headphone cable striking the table a few times but I could not pick this up in the final recording. I think this is an example of why dynamic cardioid mics are advised for podcasting as they pick up less ambient noise. No building work or traffic noise in this recording - so as near to being a clean recording as I have had so far.I used a new recording for the introduction, recorded on the ATR2100 dynamic mic and I also recorded an outro, saying goodbye. The tone of my voice sounds so weak in this outro that I thought about re-recording it. In the edit I have actually added 6db of bass to my voice - probably needed a lot more!I changed the music in this recording. Editing the four previous episodes I got to hear the previous music so often and it was starting to grate. I put a short musical interlude in the recording, just as a experiment really - I hope to find out if a listener will find this interlude as random, unnecessary and distracting or pleasant and natural. So, overall, I feel that this recording is a development from the episodes before. Agree? disagree? Help me!!Background music: Been Awhile by Yung Kartz from the Free Music Archive website. This week, we decided to delay our previously scheduled format until next week, as a member of The Hollywood Outsider family has passed on. We did not feel it appropriate to air a normal show, given the circumstances, so instead Aaron and Scott sit down to share their thoughts on the loss of a founding member of the show. We conclude with a respectfully edited re-airing of Justin Macumber's farewell episode, and we encourage you to dive into his collection of books and articles. As you listen to this episode, several of our hosts also wanted to share their thoughts on Justin with his audience. You can find those below. John My experiences with Justin started as a listener of the Hollywood Outsider. He was the voice that I loved disagreeing with…but most often he made me crazy when I had to agree with him. His insights and appreciation for pop culture helped make the show what it is today. It was a pleasure and an honor to share the few episodes I could with him. A great wealth of knowledge has been lost, fare thee well Justin.   Brian My involvement with The Hollywood Outsider has afforded me countless unique experiences, laughs, and friendships over the years. One of those treasures was Justin Macumber. (My God, he would never let me forget that compliment lol). If there was one thing Justin and I were guaranteed to have a good time doing together, it was making Aaron frustrated. We would finish the pre-show greetings and sound checks. Everybody’s ready to get started. All’s quiet. Aaron would inhale and then… “UTINNI!!!” The Star Wars sound bite that would trip up Aaron’s focus enough to the point of having to do multiple retakes. It never quit being funny (even though Aaron would say otherwise). Justin’s cackling laughter always made it worth the cost of whatever eye rolling I could feel Aaron sending my way. His honest laughs were so infectious that you could not help but join in and I knew comedy gold was struck when I heard that loud laugh. Things weren’t always fun and games. There were heated moments for sure. There were times I would feel like FedEx-ing a throat punch to him. As with any family, you have your ups and downs. The Hollywood Outsiders are no different. But by the end of the night, there was usually a priceless and hilarious discussion that never seemed to get recorded. He was always in the middle of it – if not leading it. And a “goodnight” to everybody that sometimes included a “love you guys”. It’s hard to believe I write this having spent hundreds of hours with Justin, yet never even had lunch with him in person. That’s one of the interesting things about the time we live in. You can have a meaningful bond with someone you’ve never physically met. We got to see him chase his dream of being a published author. Consoled him as he worried about his wife’s own health scare. Shared Christmas gifts with one another. And now he’s gone. It’s not fair. We’ll never get to hear his squeaky chair; hear him softly sing “It’s Been Awhile” anytime that phrase was said; or introduce himself with his own theme music again. And that is a hole that’ll never be filled (that’s what she said *wink*). We love you. We miss you. Farewell, my friend.   Aaron Many years ago, we were putting together a podcast to talk about entertainment, and we needed a voice. Someone distinct, insightful, contemplative, occasionally combative, and passionate. Scott knew a fella who had already established himself in the podcast community with his show catering to writers, and his name was Justin Macumber. With Brian in the mix, we all clicked almost instantly, each of us taking swipes at each other’s tastes, and often Justin and I specifically would engage in heated debates that would ultimately end in no winner declared, but everyone listening laughing hysterically. Or ironically. One of those. The truth of the matter is, there were times we each probably wanted to lock each other in the LOST hatch, but more times than not, we were smiling and over it in minutes. We are both very passionate about the things we love, and as a person who loves a good debate, Justin was always a stellar sparring partner. Along the way, he also became a friend. He loved to tell me when I was wrong, and no topic was off limits. I recall once we even had a hefty argument over my parenting choices, which in hindsight was pretty hilarious because of how ridiculously inappropriate his advice was. At the same time, there were numerous instances where Justin and his “so left he’s leaning sideways” manner helped me see sides to a subject I never would have considered, had he not persisted in only that way he can. We ended up bonding over numerous interests, and we even did a few side projects together. Those efforts led directly to my friendships with Troy, Wayne, Darrell, and many others. Looking back, it’s amazing to think of the many branches a single relationship leads to. It all culminated in a trip to SXSW where we spent 5 days together watching movies and having a lifetime of experiences. Over the past two years, I have witnessed his hardships and struggles, and the impact they took on both his body and his unwavering soul. Even things he loved with every fiber of his being – Krista, Star Wars, Superman, his books – ceased being everyday topics of discussion. For a man so in love with dreams and the limitless possibilities in the stars, life’s harsh realities were taking a toll. I have been trying to put the words together to express what it means to lose a friend you have public discussions with every week, but too many of you already know. Over the past day, such an amazing arsenal of support in every corner of the internet has popped up, reminding those who knew him who he was, and those who didn’t what they missed. But unlike so many of our friends and family who have passed, Justin is not lost to the ether. He has left an indelible mark on his community of fans in numerous forms. Between his work on Dead Robots Society and The Hollywood Outsider, his passionate voice can live on. With his many published books, his vision, words, and artistic drive can live on. And with the family, friends, and fans he has left behind, his memory will live on. Even though he doesn’t believe in an afterlife, I pray there is one. So he can look down and see all of this praise, because you know he would absolutely love it. I also want him to read this and know that I was so looking forward to him healing and coming back for another episode, debating with vigor those things we each love. I will miss having that sparring partner. But mostly, I want him to see that I finally used his stupid Oxford comma in this post reasonably, often, and appropriately. As you would always tell me, Justin: For that, you are welcome.

Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I’m an odd bird who found a home with writing paranormal. Yep. I said it. I think admitting it is really the first step to total acceptance.Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for. I’ll talk a little about DEMONIC DESIRES (from Ellora’s Cave) and the soundtrack I listened to for it. DEMONIC DESIRES centers around a group of demons, right hand men to Lucifer, who broke ranks and saved lives rather than taking them. It’s the first book in the stories of the Lost Warriors redemption. The opening scene is a really dark, twisted sex one. My playlist needed to reflect this so I went with Danzig’s Underbelly of The Beast to kick it off. The story then takes a lighter note, introducing you to the characters out of their normal element. I brought in a good deal of Celtic flare for this because the heroine is a warrior from Valhalla. What is your playlist? Why did you choose these particular songs?I’ll give you a snippet of the list because there over 3500 items in it with 230 hours of play time… and this is JUST for DEMONIC DESIRES. I make a new list for every book. To your writing?I don’t watch many movies or much in the way of TV. Music has always been a love of mine. I can still remember the day MTV came on air for the first time. I was six and it totally wiped the floor with Sesame Street. I watched faithfully from that day forward until they started on the reality shows. I had to put up a white flag then. Let the record state that I miss Martha Quinn. Oh, and MTV actually playing music. To me, music is another form of escapism. It can set the mood for you or it can fix the mood you’re in. It’s what you make of it. I love all music, from classical to the rhythmic beating of Native American drums. You name it, I like it—Rock, Classical, Dark Metal, MallCore, Pop, Country, Jazz, Rap/Hip-hop, Foreign (I’m a huge lover of the Italian music scene), Oldies. What kind of music do you like to write to?I’ll make the playlist as I write. If I know I’m entering a really dark scene, I’ll incorporate that vibe into the playlist. When I’m coming out of it, I lighten the mood. I do have one rule, if a Bee Gees song cannot be incorporated into the mix then I’m doing something wrong. Yes. I do have playlists with AC/DC and The Bee Gees sharing airtime. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack?I’d like to see Rob Zombie team up with The Cranberries (who can tell me where they are and if they’re still putting out records… I’d love to buy them). I think the collaboration would be odd but I’m betting it would work. Anything else you'd like to say about music and writing/creating?I have a lot of respect for anyone who can create music. It’s their story, put out there for the world to hear.To learn more about Mandy, visit her website.Next week, I interview author Paul Liadis, AKA The Struggling Writer.
