#157  - Is It Really Just “Normal Aging”? The Hidden Hormonal Imbalances Wrecking Your Energy, Weight, & Youthfulness with Dr Prudence Hall   Ever been told that your weight gain, brain fog, and exhaustion are just “part of getting older”? Yeah, no. In this episode, I sit down with renowned hormone expert Dr. Prudence Hall to talk about why so many women are struggling through perimenopause and menopause—and why it doesn't have to be that way.   Dr. Hall, a gynecological surgeon turned regenerative and functional medicine expert, shares the biggest myths about midlife and menopause, the truth about bioidentical hormones, and why so many women in perimenopause and menopause are failed by conventional medicine. We dive into hormonal imbalances, how they affect weight, sleep, mood, beauty, and energy, and—most importantly—how to rebalance your body so you can look and feel amazing again.   If you're tired of being told “it's just aging,” this episode will change everything.

“What has Jane Fonda done to her face?” Someone asked that question on social media after the eighty-seven year old actress was featured prominently in photos and videos from the screen actors guild award show. Fonda did not look like your average almost ninety year old woman. She was one of many high profile celebrities who have had cosmetic surgery of a variety of types in an effort to thwart the effects of time on the human body in order to maintain an appearance of youthfulness. Have you noticed the growing number of people who appear, as they say, to look like they've had work done? This trend will only continue as we seek to find our identity not in who we are in terms of our inward character, but in outward appearance. Reports show that more and more teens are opting for non-surgical and surgical cosmetic procedures. Friends, if we are to be new creations, as Paul says in second Corinthians, it is only through being born again through faith in Jesus Christ.

From time to time I tell you about the power that marketing has over our kids. Marketing not only peddles products, but it also sells and promotes a world view. Yes, marketing shapes the way that our kids look at and live life. But our kids aren't the only targets that marketing so effectively hits. Marketing also shapes us adults. It's for that reason that I want to sound a warning that relates to one message marketing so effectively is sending to us as parents. That message is this: don't grow old. It seems that we're listening as we older folks have become obsessed over our appearance, our clothing, our complexions, our body shapes, and more. We spend billions and billions of dollars trying to stop something that just can't be stopped. Ultimately, this is idolatry. And in the process, we're teaching our kids to grow up to worship the idol of youthfulness as well. Parents, consider what it is that you worship, and the message you're sending to your kids about what's most important in life.

Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

As a baby boomer, I'm part of a generation that believed that adulthood began at age eighteen, which usually coincided with the time a teenager graduated from high school and went into the work force or off to college. For generation z – those born between 1997 and 2012 – there's the belief that adulthood doesn't begin until sometime around the ages of twenty-seven to thirty. Researchers found that only eleven percent of Gen Z-ers say they feel like adults. One reason for this is that they don't have the financial stability they believe they need to be considered adults, including being able to pay all their own bills, contributing to a retirement account, and having a life insurance policy. In fact, forty percent of those surveyed don't think they'll ever be financially stable. Perhaps we need to be more intentional about raising our kids to take on responsibility, coddling them less, requiring them to learn the value of work, and teaching them principles of biblical stewardship.

Today, we are diving into the often overlooked but crucial topic of how societal pressures can impact our self-perception, especially as we age and approach menopause. Modern media perpetuates unrealistic standards of youth and beauty, which can have damaging effects on our self-esteem, correlating youth with our true value. Youthfulness is often glorified in the media while completely dismissing the natural and beautiful process of aging. This cultural obsession with staying young can lead many women to feel disconnected from their bodies and fearful of the natural aging process and its connotation with death.Women should be encouraged to honor their bodies, understand their unique hormonal rhythms, and embrace the natural changes that come with aging. True well-being goes beyond just physical health—it involves a deeper connection with ourselves and a commitment to living in harmony with nature. I'm so excited to share this episode with you, and I know you're going to glean so much wisdom and a new outlook on embracing the aging process and menopause. We see a lot of nostalgia in marketing and advertising, because it turns out it's less “bittersweet” than most people think. It makes most people feel positive emotions. And the same is true with consumers over the age of 50, with some surprising twists that are unique to older people. But we're not trying to call up “those were the days” kind of messages.Instead, we're trying to bond with our audience of older consumers in a powerful way. As you'll hear, poor execution of nostalgic messages can backfire spectacularly, especially with older people.Tune to hear:* A brief reflection on the nostalgia of the holiday season* Is nostalgia actually a “bittersweet” emotion?* How Brian uses nostalgia in past and current projects* What the research shows about how older consumers respond to nostalgia * Advice on the types of messaging marketers should avoid when using nostalgia* The problem inherent in an advertising industry that skews young trying to relate to older consumersLinks:* Mazda commercial “A Driver's Life” * What You Should Know About Nostalgia Marketing* Nostalgia and Consumer Behavior* When Nostalgia Marketing Backfires: Gender Differences in the Impact of Nostalgia on Youthfulness for Older Consumers Get full access to Longevity Gains at www.longevitygains.com/subscribe

I was recently reading what the book of Proverbs says about those of us who are older, and those of us who are younger. Proverbs sixteen thirty-one says, “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.” Proverbs 20:29 tells us that “the glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.” I love how Tim Keller helps us understand the truths contained in these verses. He writes, “We live in a culture that idolizes the beauty, energy, and creativity of youth. Proverbs, however, takes a remarkably balanced view of the unique splendor and glory of every age and stage of human life. The young have a strength and an unwearied ambition that older people cannot muster. The old have a perspective, wisdom, and dignity that younger people have not yet to acquire.” What a beautiful thing it is that God's counter-cultural order and design encourages and allows us to benefit from those who are different. Let's work together to love and serve the Lord.

As our youth prepare to head back to school, let's talk a bit about standards and rules that they will face. If you are a student, are you the kind of person that puts your best effort into excelling under rules, or do they no apply to you? Should they be changed to accommodate you? Let's talk about what happens when try to widen the plate.Speaking of plates, this is a baseball episode! Nolan Ryan is in this thing. I love baseball. It is a game of set rules. People who work them, and grow to follow them well, excel. People who don't want to conform don't last long. Let's talk about how those mentalities apply to godliness and life.Parents. Teachers. Authority figures. The bar you set for yourself and the youth says a lot about you now and a lot about who those youth will grow up to become. Balance is difficult. Sometimes we are too lenient. Sometimes we are too harsh. But God has shown us how challenging and hopeful balance can be... if we accept the rules. And if we continue to put our best effort to follow then. Perfection is unattainable. Thankful God never demanded that of his pitchers... I mean, people. - How wide is a baseball home plate?- Should it be widened for people who are struggling to throw strikes?- How do people on both end of the authority spectrum sometimes make this mistake?- If perfection isn't possible, why don't all pitchers just give up. Did Nolan give up?- How is God's grace, even while giving us rules, a great template for all our lives?

Recently, TikTok added a new video filter that has drawn in those who are older to using the social media video platform. The filter is called Teenage Look. Users focus the camera on their face and see a split screen, with the lower picture showing them as they look now, while the upper picture smooths out their wrinkles, launching them into a trip down memory lane as they supposedly find themselves facing their high school aged self. Truth be told, I gave it a look which simply resulted in a quick laugh. But reports are that many older users of the Teenage Look filter are actually getting emotional in different ways. Rather than laughing, some are saying that old emotions are being drawn out. Others are upset as they realize how fast time has passed and that they are indeed aging. For those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ, we cannot forget that our days are numbered, and we have a great hope that this life is not all there is. We all have a hole in our soul. And we look around at the universe for something to fill it. Youthfulness doesn't last, money doesn't heal all wounds, and every technological advancement only makes the problem worse.  For some, even religion hasn't given them the satisfaction they seek. As every day goes by, and we march closer and closer to death, our soul cries out, “is that all there is?”What if I told you that the God I serve—the God I found in Jesus Christ—provides the answer to the deepest longings of your heart? He can fill that hole in your soul that money, relationships, and even religion can't fill. And what he offers is no pie in the sky; it will resonate with you.The sermon today is titled "A Faith Worthy Of Our Longings." It is the second installment in our "Worthy Faith" Series. The Scripture reading is from John 14:6. Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on October 30, 2022. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. This sermon is filed under Begin: A Satisfying Faith.Click here if you would like to watch the sermon or read a transcript.Footnotes (Sources and References Used In Today's Podcast):I am indebted to Timothy Keller, Making Sense of God, for the reference to Peggy Lee's song, the story about the nursing home, and for reminding me of Thomas Nagel's philosophy and J. This week's episode organically concludes Season 3. Theresa & Sherry talk about their CAMP experience as a way of buttoning up Season 3 while revealing the story arc of the podcast to date. They draw a squiggly line connecting the Koshas of S1 through the Embodiment of S2, landing in the Wholistic Neighborhood of S3. While S3 is not the end of the story, it provides a natural pause before diving deeper into Science & Stories (S4). This season was a practice of surrendering to the process. It was a loosening of pre-existing structures while simultaneously constructing new ones. In that spirit, the hosts discuss the value of practicing youthfulness (a peaceful rebellion against the structures & trajectory of aging). To jump-start the experience of laughter in the body (which doesn't know the difference between authentic & manufactured laughter for the benefits), Sherry led a Laughter Yoga session inspired by its creator, https://www.laughteryoga.org (Dr. Madan Kataria) (click his name for more information). Youthfulness is wrapped in laughter! They remind listeners to follow their dreams - to listen to the storied whispers of their bodies which are really maps of past & future travels. Honoring the layers of story that tell our respective tales, mining meaning for growth and understanding. This season has been its own story and this episode hits the pause button before S4 starts next week. S4 will be an excavation of science & stories, so stay tuned!! Youthfulness shouldn’t stop anyone from achievement. It certainly didn’t stop eleven-year-old Mikaila. Instead of putting up a lemonade stand, Mikaila opened a lemonade business. Me & the Bees Lemonade started with her grandmother’s recipe and eventually earned a $60,000 investment from investors on the television show Shark Tank. She also signed a contract with a major grocer to sell her lemonade at fifty-five of the chain’s stores. Mikaila’s drive and dreams point us back to Paul’s words to Timothy: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young” (1 Timothy 4:12). Timothy, though not a child like Mikaila, was likely considerably younger than most in his congregation. And he had concerns about people treating him with contempt. Also, even after interning with the apostle Paul, some thought that Timothy wasn’t mature enough to lead them. Instead of proving himself by showing his credentials, Paul encouraged Timothy to demonstrate his spiritual maturity by the way he used his words, lived his life, loved his parishioners, exercised his faith, and remained sexually pure (v. 12). No one could discredit him as a teacher and pastor if he backed it up with a godly example. Regardless of our age, we can impact the world. We do it by setting a godly example for others as God provides what we need. May He shape our lives with the gospel, so whether we’re seventeen or seventy, we’ll be worthy to teach and share it with others.

Paul told Timothy to not let anyone look down on his youthfulness. When we hear this, we often picture Timothy as a really young man, maybe even a teenager. But was he?
