We are delighted to share with you our most recent podcast episode, "The Evolution of Comics". This episode has something for everyone from the comic book novice to the connoisseur. We are joined by three UNCP faculty members who each have their own professional connection to the world of comics. Dr. Terence Dollard is a Professor in our Mass Communication department as well as the creator of a show called Comic Culture that is showcased on the UNC-TV North Carolina Channel. Dr. Kevin Freeman is an Associate Professor in the Political Science and Public Administration program and is former president of a publisher called Action Lab Comics. Finally, Dr. Robert Epps is the Martha Beach Endowed Professor in our Art Department, and he also works as a freelance color artist. In today's episode, we cover everything from the process of creating a comic to marvel to cosplay. The first half of the episode serves as an excellent education piece for those who may not be as familiar with the world of comics whereas the second half references content and culture changes that will be especially meaningful to those who are well-versed in the comic world. Enjoy!

Samuel George London is a comic book writer and podcast host based in the U.K. We discuss why he developed his relatively recent interest in comic books and how he conceived and launched his popular Victorian space adventure series Milford Greene. The focus of our conversation though will be his latest work being published through Action Lab Comics, The S-Factor. It is a four-part series launching in June about an under-appreciated super hero sidekick, Greyfox, who decides to re-brand him self through a new reality TV series for super heroes called The S-Factor. Twelve super heroine contestants must fight for his affection. Samuel shares which show inspired The S-Factor as well as his own personal experience taking part in a reality TV show. His insight into the machinations and manipulations by associate producers to heighten emotions and tensions among contestants was fertile ground for the development of The S-Factor. Samuel also goes behind the scenes of the making of The S-Factor: the good fortune that lead to the book deal with Action Lab Comics and the artist of the series Chris Panda. Samuel reveals the series rags to riches story and why he selected Chris to illustrate it. Samuel is also the host of Comics for the Apocalypse. We talk about his imaginative interview podcast, one which ye old host has even made an appearance. Don't let that stop you though; it is well worth you time to give his podcast a listen. As we conclude our discussion I ask Samuel my Final Nine Questions, which include when he took a risk, his island book, recommended reading for comic book newbies and all about that missed opportunity. This week, Andi and Lise rave about the comic Raven the Pirate Princess, a spinoff of the Princeless series, both written by Jeremy Whitley and, in the case of Raven, arted up by Rosy Higgins and Ted Brandt. This is Volume 1, a compilation of initial issues (chapters) 1-4, in which Raven Tsingtao, the daughter of a pirate king, is double-crossed by her brothers. Her father’s legacy was supposed to be handed down to her, but her brothers poisoned him against her and now she’s looking for a pirate crew to reclaim her legacy and get revenge on her brothers. Follow Raven as she auditions potential crewmates, meets other strong badass women, and prepares to find her brothers. Andi and Lise rate Raven the Pirate Princess, as A—Awesome! Not only in characterization and storyline and art, but in diversity (many different body types, backgrounds, ethnicities, and races) and Awesome in potential queer rep. Raven is most likely a lesbian, and there are a few other characters who probably identify that way, too. Find it at Action Lab Comics and Amazon. Want more info? Check Keri Crist-Wagner’s piece at BookRiot and Mey Rude’s observations at Autostraddle.

Get in on the ground floor of this new ongoing series and thrill as we slam Jack's fist into the faces of spies, mercs, fascists, and eventually less punchable adversaries like a very grumpy artificial intelligence. Hey there fellow nerds and geeks, Aaron Nabus here and thanks for tuning into the Hall H Show podcast! Episode 40 is an epic podcast for three reasons. One...I finally met another person who's a big fan of the Detroit Pistons, Korean food, David Chang and singing Karaoke! Two...his comic book, Aberrant, as of today's date, April 16, 2018 is in previews and is scheduled for June 2018 release date (right before San Diego Comic-Con). Three...it's episode 40! I once heard Pat Flynn from the Smart Passive Income podcast once say that most podcasters stop after episode 7. So I'm Mike Tyson level ecstatic that this podcast that Alex Benedicto I started, to be a voice of independent creators, has reached this milestone! Speaking of independent creators, please give it up for this episode's guest, Rylend Grant! I went big on this one...so it includes: My Los Angeles Comic Con 2017 interview with him where he first talks about his comic book, Aberrant, which will be published by Action Lab Comics. We also get to know him better and find out he grew up in Detroit, Michigan and made a switch from politics to screenwriting for movies and now uses his showbiz and screenwriting experience to also create comic books. I also included my recent conversation with him at WonderCon 2018, where we get an update on Aberrant, if you check out the video version of this...you can see the snazzy variant cover! We also talk about his “Publishing Your First Comic Book” panel that he did at WonderCon 2018...which also included a previous guest, David Pepose, the writer and creator of Spencer and Locke. As an added bonus, I have included the audio of that panel at the end of this podcast since I know it has a lot of value for any of you aspiring comic book writers and creators. So...please enjoy this podcast with my friend, Rylend Grant and don't forget to check out his comic book, Aberrant, currently available at PreviewsWorld.com. Black Christmas with Puppet Master comic writer Shawn Gabborin This week on Scream Addicts, Jinx welcomes Shawn Gabborin to the show. The editor-in-chief of Action Lab Comics (for which he writes the Puppet Master comic book series), Mr. Gabborin has chosen Bob Clark’s classic 1974 proto-slasher Black Christmas for discussion this week. With its gloomy holiday atmosphere, shocking violence, and goofy humor, Black Christmas inspires a discussion which touches on the film’s mystery, its place in slasher film history, and whether or not its heroine can be considered a true Final Girl. Along the way, we discuss the remake, mourn the death of video stores, and briefly discuss…Stallone’s Over the Top?! It’s a fun conversation with a great guest, and it’s one we hope you enjoy! Make sure to scream at us on Facebook and Twitter. We are: @ShawnGabborin @Scream Addicts @Jinx1981
Ever wonder what would happen if Calvin and Hobbes grew up in Sin City? Writer David Pepose did just that with his comic book, Spencer & Locke – which is also co-created and drawn by Jorge Santiago, Jr. and published by Action Lab Comics. I was blown away after reading all four issues! And can't wait for the movie! Oh wait, I was so excited that I jumped the gun! We caught up with David at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 and on this interview, we not only get some insight behind the development of Spencer & Locke, but we learn what comics books influenced his journey into becoming a writer, we find out he ignored the creative itch for a long time and started writing Spencer and Locke on a dare and we also discuss some possible actors for the possible Spencer & Locke movie adaptation (fingers crossed). He also gave some great answers in our Thunder Round! I'm sure glad he scratched that creative itch and that he graciously took time to talk with us at SDCC…because Spencer & Locke is one badass comic book. We hope you enjoy our conversation with David Pepose!

The Joy of Comics Podcast, Episode 16: Interview with Dave Dwonch from Action Lab Comics On this very special episode of The Joy of Comics podcast, we (Rich, Jordan and Kevin) sit down with Dave Dwonch - a comics writer and executive who lives and works on the frontlines of the indpendent comics scene. As a founding member of Action Lab Comics - as well as its President of Marketing and Development - Dave has some fascinating insights to offer about the current state of indpendent publishing, and when we were offered the opportunity to interview him for a panel at this year's NC Comicon - Oak City, we jumped at the chance. In addition to helping to run Action Lab, Dave is also a comics writer who has become more and more prolific in recent years. Most recently, he scripted a supernatural murder mystery series entitled Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxicab, and he has a new book coming out soon with friend and collaborator Brockton McKinney called Party Monster, which looks to be his most exciting and groundbreaking work yet. We talk about these titles and so much more, and learn what the future holds for himself and for Action Lab. So join us for an inside look at the trials, tribulations and triumphs of creating indpendent comics, as we interview one of the freshest voices in the industry. This...is the Joy of Comics! *Special thanks to NC Comicon and Action Lab for making this panel possible. You can also find Kevin's previous interview with Dwonch, click here.
