In an episode recorded in-person at this year's annual conference for the trade organization for comic shops, ComicsPRO, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald and the head of Lunar Distribution and Discount Comic Book Service, Christina Merkler, join the podcast for a vibe check about the event and state of the industry. Up first, MacDonald joins to share her read on the event, how it compares to previous editions, what stood out, and more, before Merkler visits us to talk about how passion is fueling this moment for the direct market, the spread of new readers, blind bag management, building on this moment, creating urgency, Lunar's expansion with Viz Media and Yen Press, what has them hopeful about where comics are headed, and more.
The crew limps into the studio after one of the busiest Revenge Of weekends ever — ComicsPRO, a Radiant Black blowout, and Pinball League finals — except Coral has lost her voice and now sounds like a Victorian ghost child. Which of course means it's the perfect time to debut a brand-new educational segment at her expense. This Week's Insanity:Convention Hangover: ComicsPRO chaos, industry parties, and the team hosting the smoothest finale bash in Los Angeles (confirmed by vibes).Shop Updates: Punch-card double-points day, Wonder Woman Historia book club with Kelly Sue DeConnick, and TMNT × Magic pre-release looming.Gay News (Light): RFK cold-plunging in jeans, Kid Rock jacuzzi milk, and other deeply Tennessee-coded behavior.Coral Talk Good: A new flashcard game challenges Coral to use SAT words like obsequious, recalcitrant, and magnanimous in lesbian-themed sentences. Educational outcomes are… mixed.Coral's Corner: Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano fight hype crashes into the realization that Coral will be in Scotland and may miss it — triggering existential despair.Hotel Horror: Influencers washing underwear in coffee makers permanently destroy everyone's ability to trust hotel appliances.Sleep-deprived, raspy, and somehow more unhinged than usual, this episode proves that even when Revenge Of loses its voice, it still won't shut up.New episodes every week.Only at Revenge Of — where the words are big and the voices are shot.
This week, we discuss the Original Art Expo, TMNT leaving Playmates, Brainiac, Spider-Noir teaser, some ComicsPRO announcements, Jay & Silent Bob invade the Marvel Universe, and the upcoming Batman Bronze Age omnibus. Starring Ryan Higgins, Brock Sager, Kevin Sharp, Toby Sidler, and Lane Terasaki.
ComicsPro, the comic shop retailer network, held its annual meeting last week in Los Angeles. Many of the publishers used the opportunity to showcase new projects and announcements. DC led the way with some absolute - or should we say ABSOLUTE - book news that has everyone ready for more. Speaking of DC Comics, does the publisher have a flagship team book right now? It's an interesting debate, and the answer might be no. Give us a listen and let us know your thoughts. WCPE Book Club is next week. Be sure to read Avengers vs. X-Men from 1987 before next week's show. Drop us a line if you would like to sit in on the recording this weekend. Don't panic, but Planet Comicon is coming up soon. You'll find us on the show floor staffing the Hero Initiative table. Be sure to make plans to attend our panel on Saturday night. We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. We also have the Top 10 and a new trivia question. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. In the latest episode, The Fanbase Weekly co-hosts welcome special guests Drew Rausch (California Screaming, Monster Forge's The Isle of Monsters / Ghost Boy / Monster Knight) and Joseph Karg (I Feel Doomed!) to discuss the latest geek news stories of the week, including an overview of this year's ComicsPRO trade show, Tony Gilroy's honest thoughts on the impact of Andor, and the overwhelming response to Predator: Badlands.

This week, comic shop employees from all over gather in Glendale, California. It's time for ComicsPRO, the annual event designed to “promote the progress and development of comic book retailers and improve the condition of the comic book industry.” It's one of our favorite times of the year as we eagerly sit by our computers waiting for announcements from publishers and the good word from our LCS pals. Sadly, we cannot be in person this year, but that doesn't mean we can't bring you exclusive information. Thanks to writer Zack Kaplan, who's on the ground at ComicsPRO, we're there by proxy. And he's dishing on his big announcement, extending his partnership with Dark Horse Comics, bringing us the final chapter in Kill All Immortals and two more new titles, Only The Savage Are Left and The Smart Division. Kill All Immortals is a nifty, nasty look at the boot standing on our necks: the billionaire class. The comic imagines a universe where various immortal clans have gobbled up control of the economy, but one is starting to crumble from within. Frey Asvald, daughter of Erik the Red, can no longer sit idly as her family consumes the planet. She wants to help us poor mortals, but in doing so, she exposes herself and others to tremendous violence. And can you really keep your hands clean when attempting global, capital G, Good? On this week's podcast, we discuss the state of comic book retail, a bizarre occurrence involving our local shops, and the anxiety of putting new books into readers' hands. Zack Kaplan gives us the skinny on Kill All Immortals as well as his two new titles at Dark Horse. We dig into our collective billionaire woes and consider one particular violent action committed by Frey in Kill All Immortals Volume One. Kill All Immortals is written by Zack Kaplan, illustrated by Fico Ossio, colored by Thiago Rocha, and lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Covers by Oliver Barrett (although the header image above is from variant cover artist Tula Lotay). Make sure you're following Zack Kaplan on BlueSky, Instagram, and his website. This Week's Sponsors This February, Dave Stevens's The Rocketeer soars again in a brand-new story written by John Layman, the genius behind the foodie cannibal detective series Chew, and illustrated by Jacob Edgar, who drew Plastic Man: No More and has a very cool J. Bone/Darwyn Cooke style. The new series is called The Rocketeer: The Island. Our skybound hero, Cliff Secord, leads a dangerous search and rescue mission. Who's he looking for? None other than Amelia Earhart! The first issue crashes into comic book shops on February 25th, courtesy of IDW Publishing. The Future is Calling! 2000 AD is the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, with new issues published every single week! Every 32-page issue of 2000 AD brings you the best in sci-fi and horror, featuring characters like Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, and more. If you've already read our in-depth feature on Joshua Williamson's Iron Man, the conversation doesn't stop there. On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're running the full, uncut version of our interview with Williamson, pulled straight from the complete transcript behind the piece. It's a deeper, looser, and more candid discussion that digs into his rare position straddling both Marvel and DC, why Iron Man was the one Marvel character he couldn't pass up, and how revisiting Tony Stark's origin reframed the entire run for him. New comic book sales dropped 73% from 2022 to 2023, according to ComicsPRO. That's astoundingly bad. ComicsPRO was this past weekend, and the takeaway was that the entire "comics community" needs to pull together and fix the ailing comic book industry. Where was a call for unity and comradery a year ago? Five years ago? When the "cancel pigs" were trying to run anybody out of the industry they didn't like? Is it too little, too late? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: Ah, the impassioned plea from ComicsPRO's recent gathering, echoing through the halls of the comic book industry, isn't just a flare shot into the night sky; it's a clarion call that's perhaps overdue but undeniably urgent. This weekend past, the ComicsPRO event didn't just serve as a convivial meet-up for industry insiders but as a pivotal moment of reckoning for the comic book realm. The message? A robust summons for unity and camaraderie to resuscitate the flagging veins of this beloved industry. But where does this sudden appeal for industry-wide kumbaya come from? And more pertinently, where was this rallying cry when it might have been even more critical? Flashback a year, five years even, and the landscape was markedly different. The specter of "cancel culture" loomed large, with individuals and factions within the community ready to oust anyone who didn't fit a particular mold or ideology. It was a time of division, where the line between 'us' and 'them' was drawn with a heavy hand, and the idea of unity seemed as distant as the concept of a blockbuster comic book movie flop. The call for unity at ComicsPRO starkly highlights this shift in narrative. But it begs the question: Is this call to arms, this plea for unity and cooperation, a case of too little, too late? The comic book industry, much like the superheroes that grace its pages, has faced its share of villains. From the digital revolution that threatened traditional print to the global pandemic that shuttered stores and delayed distribution, the industry has been navigating a gauntlet of challenges. Add to this the internal skirmishes and the fracturing within the community, and it's clear the industry is at a crucial juncture. Yet, the essence of comic books has always been about overcoming the insurmountable, about heroes finding a way to triumph against the odds. This call for unity, albeit delayed, could be the first step toward addressing the systemic issues plaguing the industry. It's an acknowledgment that the path to revival doesn't lie solely in digital innovation or market expansion but in healing the community itself. The irony, of course, is that the comic book industry, which has always championed stories of unity, teamwork, and the triumph of good over evil, finds itself in need of those very principles. The call at ComicsPRO is a reflection of a broader need for introspection and change, not just within the comic book industry but in how fandoms and creative communities navigate the challenges of the modern era. Is it too little, too late? Only time will tell. But history is replete with stories of comebacks and renaissances, often sparked by a single moment of collective realization. The ComicsPRO call for unity may just be the beacon the industry needs to rally its forces, to embrace diversity and inclusivity, and to march forward into a new era. After all, if comic books have taught us anything, it's that it's never too late for heroes to emerge and for change to happen. The real question now is, can the industry unite like the teams of superheroes that have inspired generations, or will it remain a cautionary tale of what could have been? The next chapter is yet to be written, and it requires every stakeholder to pick up the pen. About Us: Clownfish TV is an independent, opinionated news and commenta
On this week's episode of The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: We get to find out what John was doing last weekend when he wasn't watching Madame Web. He found some comic book stores in St. Louis and came home with a lot of Legion appearances. ComicsPRO was last week and the news was coming out left and right. DC is embracing Wednesday Comics. Marvel wants to hold at $3.99. And there is not a title that Jason Aaron cannot write about. We lost a true comic legend over the weekend with the passing of Ramona Fradon.
