ComicsPRO was this past weekend, and the takeaway was that the entire "comics community" needs to pull together and fix the ailing comic book industry. Where was a call for unity and comradery a year ago? Five years ago? When the "cancel pigs" were trying to run anybody out of the industry they didn't like? Is it too little, too late? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: Ah, the impassioned plea from ComicsPRO's recent gathering, echoing through the halls of the comic book industry, isn't just a flare shot into the night sky; it's a clarion call that's perhaps overdue but undeniably urgent. This weekend past, the ComicsPRO event didn't just serve as a convivial meet-up for industry insiders but as a pivotal moment of reckoning for the comic book realm. The message? A robust summons for unity and camaraderie to resuscitate the flagging veins of this beloved industry. But where does this sudden appeal for industry-wide kumbaya come from? And more pertinently, where was this rallying cry when it might have been even more critical? Flashback a year, five years even, and the landscape was markedly different. The specter of "cancel culture" loomed large, with individuals and factions within the community ready to oust anyone who didn't fit a particular mold or ideology. It was a time of division, where the line between 'us' and 'them' was drawn with a heavy hand, and the idea of unity seemed as distant as the concept of a blockbuster comic book movie flop. The call for unity at ComicsPRO starkly highlights this shift in narrative. But it begs the question: Is this call to arms, this plea for unity and cooperation, a case of too little, too late? The comic book industry, much like the superheroes that grace its pages, has faced its share of villains. From the digital revolution that threatened traditional print to the global pandemic that shuttered stores and delayed distribution, the industry has been navigating a gauntlet of challenges. Add to this the internal skirmishes and the fracturing within the community, and it's clear the industry is at a crucial juncture. Yet, the essence of comic books has always been about overcoming the insurmountable, about heroes finding a way to triumph against the odds. This call for unity, albeit delayed, could be the first step toward addressing the systemic issues plaguing the industry. It's an acknowledgment that the path to revival doesn't lie solely in digital innovation or market expansion but in healing the community itself. The irony, of course, is that the comic book industry, which has always championed stories of unity, teamwork, and the triumph of good over evil, finds itself in need of those very principles. The call at ComicsPRO is a reflection of a broader need for introspection and change, not just within the comic book industry but in how fandoms and creative communities navigate the challenges of the modern era. Is it too little, too late? Only time will tell. But history is replete with stories of comebacks and renaissances, often sparked by a single moment of collective realization. The ComicsPRO call for unity may just be the beacon the industry needs to rally its forces, to embrace diversity and inclusivity, and to march forward into a new era. After all, if comic books have taught us anything, it's that it's never too late for heroes to emerge and for change to happen. The real question now is, can the industry unite like the teams of superheroes that have inspired generations, or will it remain a cautionary tale of what could have been? The next chapter is yet to be written, and it requires every stakeholder to pick up the pen. About Us: Clownfish TV is an independent, opinionated news and commenta

Duggan talks about the ComicsPRO experience, his comics retail past, comic naming conventions, working with the Allreds, his wave of creator-owned books, Analog vs. reality, whether he needed to mix things up, his time writing for television, the surprising script that helped him get Deadpool, why the lead of Analog is such a perfect gateway into its world, his collaborators on the book, working with John McCrea on Dead Rabbit, and more.
In a bonus episode of Off Panel, we have one recorded live last week from ComicsPRO's annual meeting in Portland, Oregon with two of the best retailers in comics - John Hendrick of Dublin's Big Bang Comics and Steve Anderson of Maryland's Third Eye Comics. It's a caffeine fueled discussion - at least on my end - where we talk about the origins of their shops, their affinity for retail, how they organize their comics, what 2017 was like for their shops, Rick & Morty, their hopes for 2018, Marvel's Fresh Start, customer behavior, the value of signings and events, and more.
As we move slowly into convention season, there is kind of a dearth of interesting comics news to work through some weeks. Oh sure, we could weigh in on Marvel’s comments at ComicsPRO that the reason their sales are down is because of DC shipping cheaper books, but that’s a little inside baseball even for […]
Jonathan is on his own for the Altered Egos Comics Podcast this week as he looks at New Comic Book Day titles for the last NCBD of February 2017 and ahead to the first NCBD for March 2017. For the Ramble On, Jonathan doesn't have much of anything for you. He mistakenly thought the March 2017 PREVIEWS catalog would be out, so instead, he talks a bit about the Coast 2 Coast Comic Con and a little about the ComicsPRO Retailer Meeting last week in Memphis (that he did not attend). ComicsPro happened this past week and so do tons of new comics news from Marvel, DC and Dark Horse. Who had the best announcements? Which will actually happen? And the tease of a future crossover with Puzzle Warriors 3. Also, we cover the summer movie schedule in the most lackadaisical manner possible. Dave and Rachelle's weekly look at the Wolverine films of Hugh Jackman, the series that SHOULD have been called 'Logan's Run' this whole time, comes to a close this week with 2013's THE WOLVERINE. It's maybe the best movie with Wolverine in it? But that isn't saying much. Also discussed in this episode: all the news from ComicsPRO, episode four of RIVERDALE, a bunch of Captain America-related comics, more Batman movie woes, and if Mel Gibson directs the next Suicide Squad movie, Rachelle is DONE with Warner Bros and DC.
On this week's episode of Off Panel, the owner of Big Bang Comics in Dublin, Ireland - John Hendrick - joins the show to talk comics and the world of retail. In a reversal, the show starts with five random questions about Sabretooth, Ireland, drinks of choice and more, before diving into the retail world. The pair talks Big Bang's recent move last year, what makes the retail world so rewarding, comic shops as an extension of the owner's personality, the proper balance in a comic shop, the Irish comics scene, the difference between marketing comics when Hendrick started in retail in the 90's vs. now, the trickiness of ordering comics, the timing of comic releases around movies and TV shows, Marvel's problems with trades and graphic novels, the power of signings, the darkness of Twitter, Big Bang's weekly comic sales analysis tweets, his ComicsPro experience, Rebirth vs. Civil War II, how the controversy impacted Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, a demonstration of his incredible abilities of picking books for readers, and more. Want to skip straight to the retail talk? Jump to right around the 20 minute mark.

The One Where We Don't Whine About DC Comics… On this week's show Johnny and Brian take a look at what happened at the ComicsPro event for retailers and publishers and talk about who it really affects. They also talk a little bit about the Negan origin story coming to the all new Image+ Magazine, and close out by sharing what they've learned about DC Comics Rebirth. Image+ Magazine Image Comics is launching a new advertorial-type magazine promoting its upcoming releases, and is serializing a new The Walking Dead to help raise interest in it. Beginning in May, Image+ will be a 64-page magazine distributed alongside Diamond Comics Distributors’ monthly Previews catalog featuring news, interviews, previews and original comic book content. Negan Origin Much like Michonne, Negan is getting an all new origin story published in a magazine, but this time it will be the learn in the all new Image Magazine. The Walking Dead story, by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, will be serialized in four page installments in Image+’s first 12 issues and promises to uncover the origin of one of the book’s most iconic antagonists, Negan.
