We bring ourselves into life in a dance we learned right from our earliest days… in which we're often carefully managing what we can show to one another of ourselves. And others learn to dance with us in this way too, finding out from being around us what is ok to talk about, and what to avoid. Pretty soon we're all dancing around that which, if we pay attention, was in plain view all along. Oftentimes the dance feels necessary. Sometimes it is necessary. But keeping on the surface of things is hardly a way towards the intimacy, connection, contact and realness we long for. So who could we be for ourselves and for one another, so that we can bring ourselves - and all our rich complexity - into the light for the benefit of everyone around us? Hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Join Our Weekly Mailing: www.turningtowards.life/subscribe Support Us: www.buymeacoffee.com/turningtowardslife Turning Towards Life, a week-by-week conversation inviting us deeply into our lives, is a live 30 minute conversation hosted by Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn of Thirdspace.  Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google, Amazon Music and Spotify. Here's our source for this week: What if we could just tell each other? Parts of us lie in quiet, sly shadows.  Publicly undiscernible, or so we believe.  The truth is they are experienced by others,  Despite our internal dance to conceal them. When we commit to something,  And our actions “say” otherwise,  They betray the façade we  Made to manage others' views of us. If we knew, and accepted that we were visible,  We'd know there would be no point in trying to hide.  How people feel around us reveals so much of us.  What if we could just tell each other? Instead of hiding in plain sight, we'd be open to anything anyone brought our way. Here I am, ready and willing to learn. By Lizzie Winn Photo by Alexis Brown on Unsplash

Clinical trials exist to help prevent, screen for, diagnose, or treat diseases and other health problems. Without them, we would not have new treatments or other advances in health and medicine. But how are the clinical trial endpoints, or the preferred outcomes of these trials determined? Today, Anthony Gucciardo NKF's Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, Dr. Joseph Vassalotti, NKF's Chief Medical Officer, and Kent Bressler, a Patient advocate and FSGS patient, discuss this and more.   In this episode we heard from:  Dr. Joseph Vassalotti MD Dr. Vassalotti is the Chief Medical Officer of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. At NKF, his major focus is implementation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in chronic kidney disease (CKD). He led collaborations to develop the Kidney Health Evaluation for Adults with Diabetes quality measure to improve evidenced based estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria testing to guide detection, risk stratification and interventions proportional to risk in the U.S. He also served as PI for an AARP-funded Kidney Health Evaluation for Adults with Diabetes to analyze quality measure satisfaction with detection, evidenced-based therapies and health equity. Currently, he serves as Principal Investigator for the Kidney Score Platform, an NKF educational project funded by the Veterans Administration Center for Innovation to improve awareness and education among Veterans with and at risk for CKD in the primary care setting. He is also a co-investigator for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's CKD Surveillance Project. Dr. Vassalotti typically sees approximately 40 patients per week and has over 100 publications in peerreviewed journals. Anthony Gucciardo Anthony is responsible for forging and maintaining relations with key external stakeholders across a wide range of industries, to advance NKF's mission and objectives, along with those of its partner organizations.  Anthony oversees two national Corporate Development Teams, focused on securing revenue necessary to ensure NKF programmatic excellence and impact.  He has been with the Foundation since 2002. Prior to NKF, Anthony was a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Technologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he was responsible for processing autogeneic/allogeneic bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells for transplantation. He holds a master's degree in Biochemistry from Columbia University. Kent Bressler Kent is a retired RN who was diagnosed with FSGS in 1984, and received a living donor transplant from his brother Kip in 1987. Kent is an active advocate for preemptive kidney transplant and has on the recommendation of NKF worked closely with the DoD and PCORI as a consumer peer reviewer. He is an NKF peer mentor and advocate who has collaborated on an editorial “Change in Albuminuria and GFR as End Points for Clinical Trials in Early Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease,” published in AJKD in 2019. He will also be participating in the development of the new NKF Patient Network serving on the Data Input and Integration Committee. He has been an active hill advocate for the NKF for six years and was the proud recipient of the 2017 Richard K. Salick Advocacy Award. Kent is also an Army Veteran and retired from the Veterans administration as an RN. He is the co-founder of Kidney Solutions a not for profit program in Texas that assists patients and families in the transplant process and in finding a donor. I had an absolute blast with our two guests this week! Both of the ladies I had the pleasure of speaking with have quickly become powerhouses in the industry and are forces to be reckoned with even though neither one of them has a full 5 years in the business under their belt.  Our featured partner this week is Community Mortgage. Help your clients get a $100 Visa gift card by getting an Apples to Apples loan estimate from one of the mortgage pros at Community. To help your buyers have that extra spending money after closing, have them email ApplesToApples@CommunityMTG.com or call their office at 901-759-4400 and request an Apples to Apples comparison of their loan estimate from another lender.  Julie Upchurch with McWaters & Associates Realtors is 3.5 years into the business and coincidentally has qualified for the prestigious Multi-Million Dollar Club three times as well. She is overwhelmingly charming, freakishly driven, and potentially one of the more likeable people that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in real estate. Preppy blonde girls that have had her level of success typically have haters even without a reason, but I’ve yet to meet a single person that doesn’t LOVE Julie Upchurch. Alexis Brown with Emmett Baird Realty also has almost 4 years of real estate experience and she’s someone who quickly established herself as the expert when it comes to helping military families relocate to the Memphis area. Alexis quickly found her footing in this niche because it is a path she traveled herself when her husband was stationed in Millington. There’s just something different about working with a professional who knows their stuff in a specific area of discipline and I’d put Alexis knowledge of the military relocation process up against anyone I’ve met.  To connect with Julie you can call her cell at 901-412-0111 or hit her up on Instagram or Facebook by simply searching her name To connect with Alexis her cell phone is the best way to reach her and that is 901-687-8051. If you need to connect with the show or reach Dane for any of your home insurance needs, you can email him at dwilliams@shoemakerins.com .

Extreme metal, punk, and hardcore. Slayer. Sick of it All. Cro-Mags. Decapitated. Behemoth. Musically aggressive rock bands with growling vocals and lyrics about annihilation, death, and dismemberment. A genre of music that, even more than more mainstream music genres, seems to be the province of (straight) white males. But wait. In What are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman's Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal (Bazillion Points, 2012), Laina Dawes examines an overlooked and numerically small segment of the extreme music scene: black women. Putting her sociological training to good use, Dawes presents a macro structural cultural analysis of race in North America (Dawes is Canadian) and how this plays out in the micro-arenas of high school community and heavy metal shows. Using in-depth interviews with a number of black women punk and metal artists including Skin, Sandra St. Victor, Militia Vox, Diamond Rowe, Urith Myree, Tamar-Kali, Ashley Greenwood, Yvonne Ducksworth, Camille Douglas, Alexis Brown, and others, Dawes highlights the self and societal contradictions of being black, female, and a fan of extreme music. Most significantly, the black friends of these women accuse them of not being black enough and their white metal friends (and strangers, for that matter) are dumbfounded about what a black woman might find interesting in this world of white males. The answer to both, writes Dawes, is easy: Metal fandom allows these women to be themselves, to be individuals, to escape the narrow confines of prescribed gender and race roles in North American society. Laina Dawes is a music and cultural critic and opinion writer, an active public speaker, and a contributor to CBC Radio. She is also a current affairs columnist for Afrotoronto.com and contributing editor for Blogher.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
