Send us a textThe crack of gunfire shatters the morning air over Dodge City's dusty plaza. A black derby hat bobs above a railroad embankment as bullets fly from every direction. It's April 16, 1881, and Bat Masterson has just stepped off the train and into one of the American frontier's most chaotic yet consequential gunfights.Masterson had returned to help his brother, Jim, recently fired as city marshal and locked in a business dispute over the Lady Gay Dance Hall. What begins as a personal matter quickly escalates into a symbolic last stand of Dodge City's wild era. When Masterson encounters his brother's rivals AJ Peacock and Al Updegraff near the train depot, tensions explode into gunplay that engulfs the entire town.Through vivid storytelling, we transport you to Front Street as frightened onlookers peer through broken windows, watching the legendary gunfighter exchange shots with his adversaries while bullets kick up dust around his famous derby hat. The shootout's aftermath proves even more fascinating—Mayor Webster arrives with a shotgun to arrest Masterson, marking a decisive shift in Dodge City's history. Though Updegraff survives his wounds and Bat pays only an $8 fine, the Masterson brothers are effectively banished from town as new civic leaders implement moral ordinances to tame the notorious frontier outpost. This forgotten gunfight represents something far greater than a personal dispute—it captures the precise moment when Dodge City chose civilization over chaos, commerce over gunplay, and law over legend. Join us as we resurrect this pivotal moment that forever changed the trajectory of one of America's most infamous frontier towns.Purchase the Dime Novel "Gunfight at the Plaza" Want more Wild West stories? Send us a textThe saloon doors swing open on a sweltering evening in Dodge City as Cimarron George seeks refuge from the oppressive prairie heat. What begins as a simple quest for companionship quickly draws him into the electric atmosphere of the Long Branch Saloon – a microcosm of frontier tension where personal vendettas, political ambition, and business rivalries converge under the watchful glass eyes of a massive mounted moose head.George finds himself privy to whispered conversations about the dangerous feud brewing between Jim Masterson and AJ Peacock, co-owners of the Lady Gay Saloon. The conflict centers around Peacock's brother-in-law Al Updegraff, accused of theft and drunkenness, with rumors swirling that legendary lawman Bat Masterson might soon return from Tombstone to defend his brother's honor. These tensions crystallize when Mayor Webster makes his unforgettable entrance – breaking his cane over a man's head merely for offering congratulations after supposedly spreading rumors during the election. The evening introduces us to a cast of frontier characters that embody the West's contradictions: Tom Nixon, the legendary buffalo hunter who reportedly killed 120 buffalo in 40 minutes, now serving as assistant marshal; Pat Sughrue, the jovial Irishman newly elected to city council; and Marshal Singer, whose casual approach to peacekeeping belies the violence simmering beneath Dodge City's surface. As Webster warns of trouble on tomorrow's horizon and orders deputies to watch the train station, the Beeson Band strikes up a patriotic tune that momentarily unites the diverse saloon patrons – a fleeting harmony in a town poised on the edge of conflict.Saddle up with us for more frontier adventures by checking out the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's five-minute podcast "This Week in the West," premiering every Monday. Cattle Industry News NCBA Endorsed Disaster Tax Relief Bill, Passes Senate The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the U.S. Senate for passing the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. In addition to providing much needed relief to victims of hurricanes, this legislation would provide tax relief for cattle producers who received payments due to wildfires. Previously, these payments counted as taxable income, meaning producers who already suffered from disasters were hurt again by having their relief payments taxed. The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act addresses limitations in casualty losses and allows producers to take greater deductions for disaster related losses. Additionally, the bill excludes any payments received due to a “qualified wildfire disaster” from being counted as income for federal tax purposes. The bill also retroactively applies to any wildfire payments received in tax years 2020 through 2025. Producers will have the opportunity to file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for relief payments received in these previous years. The complete bill can be reviewed HERE. Cattlemen Relieved By Court Decision To Halt Corporate Transparency Act Many producers hailed the issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Corporate Transparency Act from being enforced on January 1, 2025. This ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas protects millions of family farmers and ranchers from onerous reporting requirements imposed by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. We've talked about The Corporate Transparency Act in great detail a few episodes back and remember that every producers' situation is different, and this information should not be construed as professional advice. Always consult your attorney and/or tax professional to determine how the Corporate Transparency Act impacts you. You can go back and listen to episode 213 for additional information. A Wallace Stegner Center Green BagEVENT DESCRIPTION: Designated in 2016 by President Obama and reduced to 85 percent of its original size one year later by President Trump, Bears Ears National Monument continues to be a flash point of conflict between ranchers, miners, environmental groups, states' rights advocates, and Native American activists. In this volume, Andrew Gulliford synthesizes 11,000 years of the region's history to illuminate what's truly at stake in this conflict and distills this geography as a place of refuge and resistance for Native Americans who seek to preserve their ancestral homes, and for the descendants of Mormon families who arrived by wagon train in 1880. Gulliford's engaging narrative explains prehistoric Pueblo villages and cliff dwellings, Navajo and Ute history, impacts of the Atomic Age, uranium mining, and the pothunting and looting of Native graves that inspired the passage of the Antiquities Act over a century ago. The book describes how the national monument came about and its deep significance to five native tribes. Bears Ears National Monument is a bellwether for public land issues in the American West. Its recognition will be a relevant topic for years to come. The University of Utah Press will join us in person to sell Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge and Resistance and Andrew Guilliford will be happy to sign books after his presentation. Bears Ears is also available for purchase online at the University of Utah press. Andrew Gulliford is a professor of history and Environmental Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado where he has been awarded the Roger Peters Distinguished Faculty Award for teaching, research and service. Gulliford teaches popular courses on wilderness, national parks, Western history, and environmental history. He is the author of America's Country Schools, Sacred Objects and Sacred Places: Preserving Tribal Traditions, and Boomtown Blues: Colorado Oil Shale, which won the Colorado Book Award. He edited Preserving Western History, which was voted one of the best books on the Southwest by the Tucson-Pima County Library. His book Outdoors in the Southwest: An Adventure Anthology won the Arizona/New Mexico Book Award in the category of nature/ environment and Best Book on Arizona, as well as the Colorado Book Award for best anthology. Gulliford edited The Last Stand of the Pack: A Critical Edition, about wolves in Colorado, which was published by the University Press of Colorado. His book The Woolly West: Colorado's Hidden History of Sheepscapes, published by Texas A&M University Press, was chosen the Outstanding Nonfiction winner for the 2019 Wrangler Western Heritage Awards sponsored by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. It also won the Colorado Book Award for history. His latest book is Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge and Resistance from the University of Utah Press. Dr. Gulliford has received the National Individual Volunteer Award from the U.S. Forest Service for wilderness education, and a certificate of recognition from the Secretary of Agriculture for “outstanding contributions to America's natural and cultural resources.” For a decade he held a federal appointment to the Southwest Colorado Resources Advisory Council of the Bureau of Land Management. Gulliford writes columns about the Southwest for the Durango Herald, the Cortez Journal, and the San Juan Record (Monticello, Utah) and he appears in history programs for “The Colorado Experience” television series produced by Rocky Mountain PBS. This episode was originally broadcast and recorded on April 6, 2023.

Hospitality Leaders - Interviews with hotel, event, and food service experts
On this episode, I'm joined by Natalie Shirley, President and CEO at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, for a conversation about catering your leadership style to match your strengths. Natalie is a self-described fixer and she was hand-selected to help revitalize a museum that was struggling with financial stability and general workplace health. She revamped the budget and incorporated staff feedback and individual mentorship into the workplace culture to make the museum a place where employees actually wanted to work. Natalie knows her strengths and her leadership ability and so, despite the success she has found at the museum, she doesn't intend to stay long-term. She's self-aware enough to know that while she might have been the ideal person to fix a broken organization, there are others better suited to manage it during this newfound period of stability. To Shirley, knowing when to walk away is an essential part of leadership. Anton's work has been published in Southwest Art, Architectural Digest, Art of the West, Equine Images, Western Horseman and Art-Talk. He was featured on the cover of the April 2006 American Artist magazine. Corporate collections that include his work are Sears, Dupont, State Farm Insurance, Bank of America, Hewlett Packard, and Trust Company of the West. New Years is a time of resolutions, so why not make yours to spend more time painting from life? The camera can (and often does) lie about color and value, so Bill Anton and Gabor emphasize the necessity of going outside to observe your surroundings first hand. We get it, painting from life is hard, and often times the outcome leaves your feeling disappointed. But if no hard work goes into producing your painting, what does that say about your level of commitment? About the Artist: When Bill committed to painting full-time, he studied under Michael Lynch and Ned Jacob, who encouraged him to paint from life. In this episode we are joined by Dr. Eric Singleton who is the Curator of Ethnology at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum to talk about religion and tradition in the Ancient Mississippian World. We explore a variety of topics but first we define the geographic boundaries of the ancient Mississippians which covered large portions of the Midwest, South and South-East of what is now the USA. We go back into history into a time of Native American migration and cultural expansion and ponder whether or not these migrations played a role in the evolution of Mississippian Religion similar to the arrival of Indo Europeans and its consumption of previous peoples and cultures and its transformation in ancient Europe. We then explore sacred sites in the Mississippian world and discuss sacred geography in the Native American world from Spiro to Cahokia. We turn to a crucial aspect of the story and we look at what evidence can tell us about their religions ranging from archaeology to primary sources and beyond to tribal oral traditions that still echo in our world today. We then look at the minds of the ancient Mississippians themselves and ask how did they view the spiritual world around them? How did they view the afterlife? The Human Soul? A brief overview of Mississippian Religion below. Mississippian religion was a distinctive Native American belief system in eastern North America that evolved out of an ancient, continuous tradition of sacred landscapes, shamanic institutions, world renewal ceremonies, and the ritual use of fire, ceremonial pipes, medicine bundles, sacred poles, and symbolic weaponry. Mississippian people shared similar beliefs in cosmic harmony, divine aid and power, the ongoing cycle of life and death, and spiritual powers with neighboring cultures throughout much of eastern North America. Although similarities in religious practices and rituals existed throughout the Mississippian world, individual polities possessed divergent trajectories of religious thought that over time resulted in differing paths of belief and ritual. Above all, Mississippian people were logical, pragmatic, and rational in their religious beliefs, and their observations and thoughts about the world around them were reflected in their views of the spiritual world. Their rituals and sacred narratives embodied abstract meanings, archaic language, complex symbolism, and esoteric metaphors. The numerous and widespread Mississippian polities gave rise to a remarkable tradition of religious beliefs and practices. Their religious system flourished for more than half a millennium as a meaningful and vibrant set of beliefs. Identifying the circumstances, complexity, and nature of Mississippian religion is a major focus of current research among a number of scholars, including anthropologists, archaeologists, ethnohistorians, folklorists, and historians. Although scholars debate various points of religious belief, there is general agreement on the overall religious traditions. Dye, D. (2000). Mississippian Religious Traditions. In S. Stein (Author), The Cambridge History of Religions in America (Cambridge History of Religions in America, pp. 137-155). The Kingdom of Spiro | A Forgotten Civilization The Spiro people, and their Mississippian peers, are nearly forgotten in the pages of North American history, yet they created one of the most exceptional societies in all of the Americas. The Mississippian culture was a Native American civilization that flourished in what is now the Midwestern, Eastern, and Southeastern United States from approximately 800 CE to 1600 CE, varying regionally. It was known for building large, earthen platform mounds, and often other shaped mounds as well. This documentary under the guidance and expertise of Dr. Eric Singleton explores the archaeological and historical data connecting the Spiro site to other communities throughout North and Central America, discusses the Spiroan community and religious activities, and highlights the enduring legacy of Native Americans today who are descended from Mississippian cultural groups. Together at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum we explore an a world that was almost lost to time but thankfully due to its enduring legacy through Native Americans today, archaeology and historians that story is being told so that the entire world can learn about Native American Civilizations in North America. I had Mark Magggiori on today. Wow, really an interesting human being. He's one of the best Western artists working today and I'm a big fan of his artwork. This is a Western artist who has 150,000 Instagram followers. Yes, you read that correctly. Having that many followers is kind of unheard of in the Western art game but there's a definite reason though and that's that this guy has an amazing background and can paint. He's the front-man for the French band Pleymo which was signed in 1997 by Sony records when he was only 20 years old and has sold over 100,000 albums. He was a rockstar, but he followed his dream which was to become a Western artist. He had this colossal epiphany which is amazing when you think about it. Someone who's trying to find their way, and they've been very successful mind you, and then all of a sudden seeing one painting in the Western Heritage Museum in OKC, Cowboy Hall of Fame makes a lightbulb turn on. This majestic Jim Reynolds painting started Mark Maggiori on an all-new journey into the depths of Western art. Mark is a very animated guy, quite a few little curse words here and there, but if you don't like that... well, you're going to miss out on an amazing podcast. When you have somebody that's passionate about what they're doing - it shows. For Mark Maggiori it DEFINITELY shows. This is one of those great podcasts that emphasizes why I do what I do.View available Mark Maggiori paintings here: https://www.medicinemangallery.com/western-fine-art/southwestern-contemporary-painters/maggiori-mark

The remarkable story of Henry Ossian Flipper, a young man born into slavery on the eve of the Civil War, and his struggle for recognition left its mark on our nations history. Through extensive research of military documents, court records, appeals, and from Flippers personal journals and published papers, Henry Ossian Flipper: West Point’s First Black Graduate (Wild Horse Press, 2015) captures the sum and substance of a nation torn apart by political ambitions and extreme prejudices and reveals the uncertainty of acceptance and intolerance of blacks in America following Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. In 1878, Flipper seemed destined for a long military career. Four years later, he was on trial at Fort Davis, Texas, for embezzlement of government funds and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. But his journey through the West did not end in West Texas, it was only the beginning. Before Flipper’s life was over his adventures would take him through Mexico, South America, and Arizona. It was on that journey that he found fame and redemption. Historian and author Jane Eppinga is a legendary Arizona writer. Her writing credentials include more than 300 articles for both popular and professional publications covering a broad spectrum of subjects including children’s fiction, travel, personal profiles, biology, construction, food, and public relation pieces.
