Cindy Esliger addresses those people who can't help but thrive on chaos in today's episode. The people who seem to always be in a state of emergency and who are addicted to drama. Perhaps it's even us who are the drama dabblers. Why is this mindset harmful to progress and success? How do we break free from someone who is intent on staying in chaos? And if it's us, how do we change? Cindy has advice to answer all these questions. Why do some people thrive on creating or being involved in dramatic situations? For some, it's a coping mechanism. Creating chaos that they can then fix is a way of feeling in control when stress levels are high or life is tough. But when they can't break free of the need to hop from crisis to crisis, it becomes exhausting and addictive. It pulls others into a vortex of chaos. So Cindy shares three key ways to break free from that cycle.Cindy introduces ways to distance ourselves from the perpetual drama queens that are sucking up our time. She offers insight into not rudely cutting people off but kindly protecting our own peace of mind. But what if we are the drama dabblers? Cindy shares four key ways to kick the drama addiction to the curb: 1) Acknowledge we're the ones fuelling the drama, 2) Stop the sensory overload of negativity, 3) Identify bodily signals that we've had enough, and 4) Recognize that something may be missing for us. This episode is a guide on how to identify, remove, or change cycles of drama in our lives. The office has long been a fixture in pop culture—but, in 2024, amid the rise of remote work and the resurgence of organized labor, the way we relate to our jobs is in flux. The stories we tell about them are changing, too. On this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss Adelle Waldman's new novel “Help Wanted,” which delves into the lives of retail workers at a big-box store in upstate New York. They're joined by The New Yorker's Katy Waldman, who lays out the trajectory of the office novel, from tales of postwar alienation to Gen X meditations on selling out and millennial accounts of the gig economy. Then, the hosts consider how this shift is showing up across other mediums. Though some white-collar employees can now comfortably work from home, the office remains an object of fascination. “The workplace is within us,” says Fry. “There will always be shit-talking about co-workers, about bosses—the materials for narrative will always be there.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Working Girl” (1988)“Office Space” (1999)“The West Wing” (1999-2006)“Help Wanted,” by Adelle Waldman“The Pale King,” by David Foster Wallace“Personal Days,” by Ed Park“Then We Came to the End,” by Joshua Ferris“The New Me,” by Halle Butler“The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.,” by Adelle Waldman“The Jungle,” by Upton Sinclair“Severance,” by Ling Ma“Temporary,” by Hilary Leichter“Severance” (2022—)“The Vanity Fair Diaries” (2017)“Doubt: A Parable,” by John Patrick ShanleyDolly Parton's “9 to 5”“Mad Men” (2007-15)“Industry” (2020—)“Norma Rae” (1979)“30 Rock” (2006-13)New episodes drop every Thursday. Jihye hesitated as she sat at her cold office desk. Between her fingers was a cup of instant noodles sprinkled with gold powder, a luxury often overlooked in her daily work routine. Little did anyone know that indulging in such a trivial desire would soon lead her into great peril. En: In the bustling business district on that quiet night, the entire building was filled with the stillness of evening meetings. The only change was the intense aroma of the cup of ramen that pierced Jihye's nose. The scent filled the cold, enclosed office space and etched warm memories of her blissful college days in Jihye's mind. Enchanted by the fragrance, she closed her eyes. En: However, in that moment, a cold and authoritative voice snapped her back to reality. "Did you think you wouldn't get caught, Jihye?" An old wooden door creaked open as her displeased boss entered, casting a round shadow upon Jihye's desk. En: Startled, Jihye swiftly shifted to a defensive stance. "This is..." she tried to speak, but her boss's sharp gaze silenced her. En: "Instant noodles. Not even allowed during dinner hours, isn't it?" Her boss's question was lost in the cold air of the office. En: In the end, Jihye regretfully disposed of the ramen in the office trash bin. She nodded apologetically towards her disappointed boss. In that moment, she realized how her rebellious impulse, her small and futile desires, were no match for reality. Returning to Seoul, Jihye understood that what she truly desired was more than just fresh and enticing ramen. The book/show follow Nella Rogers who works at Wagner Books as an editorial assistant. She is excited when Hazel joins Wagner Books also as an editorial assistant since Hazel would be the second black employee Wagner Books has, other than Nella herself. Today on the podcast we are joined by actor and comedian Tony Hale, who you might recognize as Buster Bluth from ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT or Gary Walsh from VEEP. We caught up with Tony while he was on location in Rome to discuss the culture of buffet restaurants (and the anxiety it instilled in Jonah as a kid), Vanessa's four months as a cruise-ship comedian and Tony's experience shooting the ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT pilot two decades ago on a boat, we mean, ship. We also discuss Tony's favorite childhood and current chain restaurants, the familiarity and nostalgia of fast food and hanging out at the mall back when Banana Republic had a safari vibe. We also play a round of LEGIT MOAN OR UNNECESSARY GROAN where we debate if charities should be sending potential donors free stamps, if it's inconsiderate to stand up at a Bob Seger concert and give our takes on some office drama when it comes to feeding birds during business hours. Make sure to check out Tony in the upcoming Netflix series THE DECAMERON and if you see him, buy him a slice of pizza from literally anywhere. It truly does not matter. One of our listeners think it would be a good idea for us to talk about the 2006 Chimbu Deven's historic-fiction "Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi". We too think this is a great idea. 23am Pulikesi is one of the best comedies of Tamil cinema in the last 20 years featuring Vadivelu, Nassar, Ilavarasu, Sriman, Thambi Ramaiah, Manobala and many others. We have Anantha, Ashoka and Rajiv touch upon the film, its comedy, the performances, the homage it pays to its predecessor: Uthama Puthiran, how it could be a modern office-drama masquerading as a period-piece and several other things. ps: Rajiv has his own crime-fiction podcast on Spotify named "Detective Mathimaran". You can listen to it here.
This hour we expose some office drama, let you rage on air and give you some news

Its been a great week, this week. Even though Bree had a migraine she was still able to take an extra day off to deep clean the house with the kids. Also she talks about her new find that helped her stay energized and in a good mood while she was cleaning all day. Liz had a stressful week at work with typical office drama, but that's ok… she is going to rise above. Bree gives her advise from a management position how Liz should approach the situation. Even through drama, Liz was able to watch the full season of Wednesday on Netflix and she was obsessed. Bree brings up an thought provoking question, but this brings up how excited the girls are about the 90s style being back. They are able to relive their childhood and they love it. Then they talk about the shit show of an episode this weeks Real Housewives of Miami was. Both Bree and Liz are not a fan this season of the normal “fan favorite” of Miami, but they are loving Nicole more and more every episode. Lastly Bree and Liz briefly talk about the recent news in the RHUGT filming in Morroco and also the Teen Mom news that came out about some past cast members.
