Welcome to the latest Music Business Worldwide Podcast, supported by Voly Entertainment.Joining MBW founder, Tim Ingham, on this podcast is Julius Erving III, better known as J. Erving.Erving is the founder of Los Angeles-based Human Re Sources, a distribution and services company working with premium independent artists. Its successful clients since launch have included Brent Faiyiz, Pinks Sweats, Ant Clemons, and YBN Nahmir.Right now, though, people are focusing on Human Re Sources for one artist more than any other: RAYE. In February 2024, two years after that signing to Human Re Sources, RAYE swept the UK's BRIT Awards, with a record-breaking six wins including Album Of The Year. There is, then, lots to ask J Erving about the success of independent artists like RAYE – and what that reflects about the wider music business. On this podcast, we also ask him about his previous life as an artist manager, his personal motivations, and his decision in 2020 to sell Human Re Sources to Sony Music and The Orchard.Music Business Worldwide's Podcasts are supported by Voly Entertainment (previously known as Voly Music).
This week I'll bring you an episode from way back in 2021 that I hope will help us to frame our Lent in a positive and hopeful way. If you'd like to connect with me, find me on Instagram, at my website, or on Substack. If you'd like to help support this podcast financially, there's a way to do just that on my page at buymeacoffee.com! Thanks for sharing, subscribing, rating, and reviewing, as this helps our community to grow. Thanks as always to my friend, Peter Vaughan-Vail, for providing the beautiful harp music you hear in this and every episode. Today we're looking at Lenten disciplines with an eye toward the growth of what we want to see in the end - in ourselves, our families, our church, community, country and world. And we're giving ourselves space for light and hope in this liturgical season which literally means 'springtime'. Here are some resources I hope will make your Lent more encouraging and fruitful: 1. Helpful, grounded (and often funny!) daily Lenten video reflections from author Kate Bowler - you can also find them on Kate's Instagram 2. Be Kind - a helpful Lenten practice video from Fr. James Martin 3. Best Lent Ever - daily videos from Dynamic Catholic 4. Song: Better Days by Ant Clemons, Justin Timberlake and Kirk Franklin 5. Song: Someday Soon, by Wilder Woods 6. Song: O My Soul, by Audrey Assad 7. Podcast: Abiding Together 8. Lenten Practice: Watch this tulip video, then: buy flowers for yourself (yes, for you!), put them in your kitchen, and let them be your teacher: spring is on the way, friend! 9: Instagram Account: Follow my friend The Bluebird of Happiness on Instagram for more hope and light in your feed! 10. My current favorite cover of Here Comes the Sun - search for more, they will make your heart happy! 11. Lenten Practice: Conversations with God journal, start a new page and at the top write one or more of the following prompts, then just write until your hand is sore or you feel the loving voice of God creeping in and making Himself known to you: What habits or practices do I have today that are not serving me? How can I let them go? What do I want my life (or my family or community) to look and feel like on Easter weekend? How can I move in that direction now? How can I serve other people using my unique gifts? What would be a good first step today?

Throughout his illustrious career, Donny has earned 33 gold records; selling over 100 million albums becoming a worldwide music legend. He has made history by celebrating almost 6 decades in show business with the release of milestone 65th release, Start Again, that debuted on September 10, 2021 . The album title itself was directly inspired by Osmond's own unique career journey of constant reinvention over the course of his six decades as a world recognized performer. The 12 track Pop/R&B Start Again is Osmond's first full length solo album in 7 years and features collaborations with such notable performers as Charlie Wilson and Pierre Bensusan and songwriters 9am, Ant Clemons, Dalton Diehl, Jason Mater, Jonas Myrin, Larrance Dopson, Ne-Yo, Seth Reger, Space Primates and Amy Wadge. Additionally, in a career first, Start Again is entirely co-written and produced by Osmond himself. Recordings took place in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Osmond's home state of Utah. The first single “WHO” and its accompanying music video were released on June 30, 2021 and quickly rose to the top of iTunes charts. The video, directed by Shane Drake, was shot on location in Northern California, and features Osmond portraying multiple versions of himself and showcasing three very different sides to the personalities that have made Osmond the consummate chameleon of a performer that he is today. Throughout his career, Donny has notably entertained a vast array of audiences with his varied career choices. He has starred on Broadway as Gaston in Disney's Beauty and the Beast; hosted two television series on British network television; and performed at the Concert for Diana, seen worldwide by more than two billion viewers. The critically acclaimed song Captain Li Shang's “I'll Make a Man Out of You” from the Disney film “Mulan” was sung by Donny. The song and Donny's singing of it received accolades from around the globe and ranks as one of the most popular and enduring Disney tunes of all time. The brilliant, genre-morphing jazz, hip-hop and R&B artist (and 4x Grammy winner) Robert Glasper reflects on important early moments in his creative evolution: developing his skills at performing arts school in Houston alongside fellow talents like Beyonce and songwriter/producer Bryan-Michael Cox, honing his craft with encouragement from modern greats like Roy Hargrove and Christian McBride during his years studying at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, collaborating with his college classmate Bilal as his music director, and getting involved with the late 90s Neo Soul scene led by artists such as The Roots and Erykah Badu. Glasper also talks about his creative process, and how he approaches the collaborations in his phenomenal Black Radio album series, which began with the Grammy-winning Black Radio in 2012. (That LP became the first album ever to debut in the top 10 on four different genre charts simultaneously — a feat repeated by Black Radio 2 the following year.) On February 25th, Glasper will release the highly anticipated Black Radio 3, which features appearances by his frequent collaborator Terrace Martin, Q-Tip, Esperanza Spalding, H.E.R., BJ The Chicago Kid, Common, India.Arie, Ant Clemons, and more. He is also nominated for two 2022 Grammys, for Best Progressive R&B album (for his Dinner Party collaboration with Martin, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder) and Best Traditional R&B Performance (for “Born Again” with Leon Bridges.)

The inauguration of Joseph Biden as POTUS captivates the world as Dr. Dre's divorce continues to lead to messy headlines and Ashanti and Keyshia Cole's Verzuz battle finally takes place running a little less than smoothly.
We got an easy, breezy episode for you this week, friends, and it includes a fun highlight reel of those very impressive Inauguration performances; Lisa Vanderpump giving Stassi Schroeder a she's-not-racist pass on a podcast with two other white people; Ben Affleck throwing Ana de Armas' cardboard cutout in the trash; and Olivia Jade's underwhelming return to her YouTube channel. Plus, we review some relationship dos-and-don'ts.
We are getting a docu-series from #DemiLovato. It's called ‘#DancingWithTheDevil' and it is going to cover everything that has been going on with Demi over the last few years, including her overdose. She said in a press statement “It's been two years since I came face-to-face with the darkest point in my life, and now I'm ready to share my story with the world. For the first time, you'll be able to see my chronicle of struggle and ongoing healing from my point of view. I'm grateful that I was able to take this journey to face my past head-on and finally share it with the world." The docu-series is coming out on March 23rd on YouTube. Demi also announced that she is going to be performing at the US presidential inauguration of #JoeBiden on January 20th which is turning into a star studded event. Justin Timberlake, Jon Bon Jovi and Ant Clemons have also been announced as performers and E! News is reporting that Jennifer Lopez will be there to sing as well. Variety made the announced that Lady Gaga will attend to sing the national anthem. #Shakira has sold the rights to all of her music. Shakira's catalogue, including her big hits like “Hips Dont Lie” and “Wherever, Whenever” has been sold to the company Hipgnosis. Shakira's catalog will continue to be administered by her longtime publishing home Sony/ATV under a deal that is place for another seven years. #TaylorSwift was cited by three Justices this week during a hearing at the U.S. Supreme Court. Two students allege that Georgia Gwinnett College violated their First Amendment rights by enforcing a “speech code” restricting them from speaking publicly about their Christian faith on school property. The college revised the policy to allow free speech on campus, so a trial judge and an appeals court ruled the case was moot. The students disagreed, so brought the case to the Supreme Court. According to The New York Times, Justice Elena Kagan reflected on Swift's 2017 case against radio host David Mueller, who she accused of groping her at a meet-and-greet four years earlier. The pop star sought, and won, a symbolic $1. We're celebrating the release of #WhyDontWe's upcoming album "The Good Times and The Bad Ones" with a special Album Release Party this FRIDAY at 8PM EST!
