Today I switch over to events in the UK during the 30s and how they handled the challenge of the Axis. I'll be starting off with a look at their economic situation in the aftermath of the Depression and leaving the Gold Standard. Which for once was mostly good news, but still very much a recovery from years of disaster. Melvyn Bragg and guests explore typology, a method of biblical interpretation that aims to meaningfully link people, places, and events in the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament, with the coming of Christ in the New Testament. Old Testament figures like Moses, Jonah, and King David were regarded by Christians as being ‘types' or symbols of Jesus. This way of thinking became hugely popular in medieval Europe, Renaissance England and Victorian Britain, as Christians sought to make sense of their Jewish inheritance - sometimes rejecting that inheritance with antisemitic fervour. It was a way of seeing human history as part of a divine plan, with ancient events prefiguring more modern ones, and it influenced debates about the relationship between metaphor and reality in the bible, in literature, and in art. It also influenced attitudes towards reality, time and history. Equipment and organization episode! Even if the French commanders got thoroughly discredited after 1940, the actual gear used by the army kept a decent reputation. 1780 proved to be the lowest point of the entire American Revolution. This week we examine exactly why that was.Join us on social media! For France, lacking in both population count, natural resources, and industry when compared to their hostile neighbor, the colonies were indispensable. But the lackluster engagement from the Popular Front government would help drive local leaders from forming partnerships with their imperial overlords, as even a supposedly friendly government ruled with a clumsy hand. So while the major components of the empire were productive, the people actually living there began envisioning futures separate from Paris. The honeymoon period of the Popular Front was basically nil within the actual French government. The establishment may have been willing to entertain limited reforms, but sweeping changes were out of the question, killing the momentum of the entire movement and dooming it to failure. By the time the Popular Front came to power it seemed like nothing would be the same in France. Politics were polarizing, the Communists became a viable electoral force, and the old order appeared dead and buried. Strikes were sweeping the nation and the business class appeared to be in retreat. It wouldn't last, but it felt great at the time. No story of the militarization of German society would be complete without talking about the SS. Possibly the most iconic image of Nazi Germany, aside from images of its victims, was the ominous, black-clad figure. The lengths that I covered last week that the Nazis went to in order to keep the people happy were not done for the love of leisure. Abby, Patrick, and Dan take up a topic that couldn't be more relevant to the contemporary zeitgeist – aggression – as theorized by an unlikely source: the British analyst and pediatrician D.W. Winnicott. What did this beloved and famously gentle figure have to say about aggression, and our taboos and fantasies surrounding it? Where does aggression come from, and what is its function developmentally? And what role can acknowledging feelings of “hate” play in the family, in psychotherapy, and in everyday life? To answer all these questions, this episode – the first in a three-part series – sees Abby, Patrick, and Dan sketch out Winnicott's biography, discuss his theoretical preoccupations, and unpack his approach to therapy, especially with severely distressed children and adults. Close-reading his essay, “The Roots of Aggression” (collected in the The Child, the Family, and the Outside World) they explore how, for Winnicott, the capacity to work with aggression implicates everything from our ability to move in physical space to our feeling deserving of love.Robert Adès et al., editors. “Index of Available Audio Recordings.” The Collected Works of D. It seemed that after the re-occupation of the Rhineland that Hitler had gotten the measure of the UK and France, and that what had seemed impossible previously was now quite the opposite. To that end, he was finally able to achieve one of the biggest goals of both the Nazis and German nationalists in general: the unification of Austria to Germany. The name of the game for 1930s Germany was escalation. Not just in armaments, but in diplomatic moves as well. From small moves to prevent coalitions forming against them, to major plays to bring down the Versailles order, the Nazis only grew bolder as they began to realize the West lacked the wherewithal to stop them. We all know the Germans annexed Austria in 1938, but the story of how they tried to overthrow their southern neighbor in 1934 doesn't get as much attention. Today I'll be covering the politics and instability that created a window of opportunity, or perhaps more the scant impression of one, to be exploited by the Nazis. It has been two years since this podcast launched. As such, it feels like the right time to return to the first film I ever reviewed: The Mummy (1932). Do I still agree with my past self, or have the many mummy movies I have reviewed since then changed my impressions? In addition, this episode also explores the real-life Imhotep, the villain in the film. Was he truly as evil as the film claims, or was he arguably one of the greatest Egyptians to ever live?Listen on to find out!Support the Show:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MummyMoviePodcastContact Us:Email: mummymoviepodcast@gmail.comBibliographyAllen, J. The Saratoga campaign highlighted the growing competence of the Continental Army and the effective use of defensive tactics in the American Revolutionary War. General Burgoyne's campaign, initially marked by confident declarations and swift advances, quickly turned into a logistical nightmare as supply lines stretched thin and reinforcements failed to arrive. The American army, under General Gates, capitalized on these weaknesses by fortifying positions along Bemis Heights, creating a formidable barrier against the British advance. The internal dynamics between Gates and Arnold, marked by tension and disagreement, added a layer of complexity to the American command structure. Arnold's decisive actions during the critical moments of the battle, despite being sidelined by Gates, showcased his military acumen and contributed significantly to the American success. The episode delves into the strategic missteps of the British and the resilience of the American forces, culminating in a turning point that would influence the course of the war.Join us on social media!
