It's "cheesesteak," not "cheese steak," and certainly not "Philly cheese steak"!  I got an interview with Pat Romano of the We Are Inn restaurant and motel in Philipsburg. Pat's got opinions about cheesesteaks, and Philly roast pork sandwiches, and management, and...Pat's got opinions. He's also going to be opening a new, much bigger place in State College in April. Probably April.  I talked to Pat because he's from Philadelphia (Norristown, originally), and makes a good cheesesteak. I've seen an increasing amount of talk about cheesesteaks on social media, so I thought Seen Through A Glass should get in on the act. That's right, you're going to get my opinions too! I'll also tell you about a cheesesteak I got off a guy working an outdoor grill during a snowstorm in downtown State College; good times, good cheesesteak! What else? I tasted a rare single barrel corn whiskey from Liberty Pole Spirits, and I'll tell you where to find a place to cozy up to a fireplace with good food and drink.  Next episode? We filmed this project in detail over several days. That detailed tutorial video will eventually be released on this YouTube Channel.  In this episode, Lurch and I talk about the project and also give our opinions and thoughts on the bike's performance after installation. Is it worth it? We also talk about tuning the engine to the new cam. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE There are many cam manufacturers out there, and there are just as many cam options.  After talking with some of our Patron Members in the members-only Law Abiding Biker Facebook Group, Popeye decided to go with the S&S gear drive 465 gear torque cam.  We have no affiliation with S&S, but we definitely recommend them.  You can get the kit Popeye used HERE.  A torque cam offers on-demand throttle response from low to mid RPM at cruising speed.  A power cam targets high RPM, wide-open throttle response that keeps pulling right up to the redline. While identical to Viking's other ocean ships, the Viking Neptune is equipped with a small hydrogen fuel system, making it the cruise industry's first ship to test the use of hydrogen power for on board operations. This is the 2nd part of a multi-part series, focusing on “Managing Cultural Adjustment and Culture Shock”. Last month Udo was fortunate to talk to Shiena Greata Medrano, a student at the University of Montana, but born and raised in the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, which is also where she started her education. Shiena first settled in Philipsburg, Montana, a city of under a thousand individuals, before moving to Missoula, to attend UM. This November episode is dedicated to all the brave students in high schools around the world who started their education in one country and finish it in another. Who left their comforts, their culture, their traditions and customs behind, and had to re-discover, re-learn and re-build it all in another country and culture. Join Udo to learn about the cultural adjustment of four high school students in Missoula, Sandrine , from Congo, who lived in Uganda for most of her life before coming to Missoula, Tantine and Magnifique from Burundi, and Salim from Syria. Shien was born and raised in the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, which is also where she received her primary education. She decided to continue her education in the United States and while study abroad is one of the best ways to acquire global skills, access personal and professional opportunities, by developing intercultural communication, foreign languages, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, it typically requires some cultural adjustment in the host culture and country as well. Coming from Manila, a city with several million people to Philipsburg, Montana, a city of under a thousand individuals is a major change, which includes the shock of a new environment, meeting lots of new people and learning the customs, traditions and values of the new country and its people. An adjustment that many international students are going through, when they decide to leave their rural hometowns and move to another country, and often much more urban settlements, to continue and/or complete their educational journey, just like Shien did. Her journey has been fun, exciting, educational, rewarding, eye-opening, but sometimes also stressful and even frustrating. This cold case dates all the way back to 1983, after Royal Canadian Mounted Police discovered the body of a man buried in a shallow grave. And while this agency was investigating a murder, another in the United States, in New Jersey, had been looking for this person after he went missing in 1981. His name? Theodore Frederick Kampf. The funds will be donated through the Hurtigruten Foundation.The Hurtigruten Foundation aims to create a lasting, positive impact in the remote places Hurtigruten Expeditions operates and actively seeks to support initiatives that support local communities, protect endangered species or lead to the reduction in plastics and marine litter.For summer 2022, Hurtigruten Expeditions will have its first full season in Alaska, offering two itineraries, one that's 14 days and one that's 18 days, either southbound or northbound. The 18-day cruise includes stops where hardly any other cruise line has ever visited, including the Alaskan Peninsula, the Aleutian Islands, and the uninhabited St. Paul and St. Matthew Islands.All 2022 Alaskan itineraries are onboard the hybrid-battery-powered MS Roald Amundsen. By booking a Hurtigruten Expeditions voyage in November or December, North American travelers will contribute directly to preserving the Alaskan wilderness they explore.For the Galápagos, the new partnership with Galápagos Conservancy will see donations divided between three multi-year, multi-partner programs:Iniciativa Galápagos: Restoring Giant Tortoises. More than 10,000 Giant Tortoises have been reared in captivity and released to the wild to reverse the decimation of their numbers caused by centuries of over-exploitation, but populations are still 10% of original size, and available habitats are only 35% occupied. Hurtigruten's funding will go towards the organization's breeding, rearing, release, and research programs concerning these ecologically critical animals and their ecosystems;Strengthening the Galápagos Marine Reserve. The nutrient-rich waters of the newly-expanded Galápagos Marine Reserve are an oasis for one of the world's highest concentrations of ocean biodiversity, including nearly 3,000 species of marine wildlife. Galápagos Conservancy is on the leading edge of combatting climate change and incursions by invasive species, and Hurtigruten funding will go toward this and a wide array of marine protection and restoration programs; andSaving Pink Land Iguanas. On the remote slopes of Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island, the endemic Pink Land Iguana — a key species in the development of evolutionary science — is teetering on the brink of extinction. Ryan and Lucas Gramling of Philipsburg stopped by CenClear with their mom, Kris Wehrer, to donate some birthday cake kits that they had created. Instead of celebrating in the traditional fashion, twins Lucas and Ryan celebrated their 11th birthdays June 22, 2021 by creating 11 birthday cake kits. The kits can be provided to families in need in the CenClear preschool program to celebrate their children's birthdays. The kits include a variety of cake flavors, frosting, sprinkles, candles and even a handmade card from the boys. CenClear says great job, Ryan and Lucas and Happy 11th Birthday! “We're going on an adventure!!!”Who doesn't love a good adventure? We absolutely love going on adventures. Spending the summer of 2021 in the Flathead Valley of Montana, we certainly found our fair share. One of the most memorable, however, was a simple backpacking trip into the mountains of the Jewel Basin to Crater Lake.Nothing outstanding happened. No turmoil. No broken limbs. No grizzly confrontations. Just a great 10 mile, round trip, overnight backpacking trip where we spent the night on a little peninsula that jutted out into Crater Lake.We even brought along a special barrel-aged porter from Tamarack Brewing, one of several wonderful local Flathead Valley breweries. (PRO TIP: It was well worth the extra weight in the backpack!)While on our little adventure, we noticed that there was not another soul in sight at Crater Lake. After passing Birch Lake en route to Crater Lake, we didn't see another human for at least 24 hours… we wondered why?Why not follow your dreams?Upon contemplation, we came to the conclusion that too many people find one excuse or another to forego the adventures in life that had once been a glimmer in their eye. Quite simply, we decided that many people just need that little nudge, that little bit of encouragement to pursue their dreams; some big, some small. No matter what adventure you have at the edge of your mind, you should explore it. You should go for it. We only live once, so why not get busy living instead of being busy dying? Okay, that's a pretty deep way of saying that we decided to record an impromptu podcast on our way back to the trailhead. Of course, we didn't have our Living A Stout Life studio in tow, so we plopped down at Birch Lake, cracked open our "on the way out" beers, and recorded on our iPhones. (ANOTHER PRO TIP: Want to start a podcast and don't have fancy equipment? Whip out your smartphone. JUST... GET... STARTED!)Anyhow, we believe that you're never too old for a good adventure, no matter what shape that adventure takes.  Air passengers who are bumped from overbooked flights or who are forced to sit through long delays could receive up to $2,400 under proposed regulations for the government's promised passenger bill of rights.  The proposed compensation will use a sliding scale with larger airlines and longer delays requiring bigger compensation payments. The Canadian Transportation Agency is releasing the draft regulations for public comment with an aim to having the rules take effect by next summer. Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and Montana Historical Society (MHS) celebrated Women's History Month by recognizing the first participants in a unique statewide oral history project developed by DNRC with support from MHS, Montana Conservation Districts, Montana History Foundation, Montana State Library, and Montana Stock Growers Association. The project seeks to document the lives of Montana women who have lived and worked on the land as ranchers, farmers, mothers, and stewards of the state's irreplaceable natural resources. Participants included Pauline Webb (54 Ranch, Townsend), Dolly McMaster (McMaster Ranch, Townsend), Arlene Pile (EOB Ranch in Big Timber), Esther McDonald (McCattle Ranch LLC, outside of Philipsburg), and Glenna Stucky (Stucky Ranch in Powell County). And, it's all on Highway 1!  We started in Anaconda and passed Discovery Ski Hill where skiing and mountain bike trails abound.  Then to Georgetown, Silver, Echo Lakes and Rock Creek where camping, swimming, fishing and boating are found!  And finally off to Philipsburg with it's quaint shops, homes on hills, and historic architecture.  Visit Granite Ghost Town, just a hop and a skip away. One year ago this week, the first episode of Roderick on the Line went up. To commemorate the occasion, I wanted to share a little bit of history with you, as well as just say, “thanks.” Here’s the thing: John and I have been pals for about a decade now. And, as we’ve discussed on the program from time to time, we’ve had a longstanding habit of engaging in very, very long conversations, both in-person and on the phone, about pretty much any topic you can imagine. A fact born out by any of the 40+ episodes of this show so far. Now, in terms of the pre-pre-history of RotL, a seed was planted when I interviewed John for a thing I used to do called, The Merlin Show (n.b.: you can find video and audio of that interview over here). It was a riot to do, and I really recommend checking it out for both Roderick newbies and completists alike. You will find it very helpful. As you do. But, the real impetus for this show arose by accident last Summer, when my Back to Work co-host, Dan Benjamin, was on paternity leave. In Dan’s brief absence, I decided to interview three interesting friends about their life and how they work. One of my victims was, of course, The Great Man himself—the bearded oracle who ended up being the titular co-host of this very program: Mr. John Morgan Roderick. On that episode, John and I talked about lots of different stuff to be sure (full show notes below), but, as a careful listener of the current program will immediately pick up, you will also hear the genesis of what would become numerous leitmotifs from what would soon become the canonical RotL. There’s John’s deep historical pedagogy. There’s John’s perspicacious cultural criticism. There’s John’s first singing my name to the tune of Janet Jackson’s 1986 hit, “Nasty.” There’s John (again) hearing my formal pitch to do a new podcast called, “Roderick on the Line.” And, yes: there is John’s bell. I hope you will enjoy this important cultural document and are able to appreciate its gravitas as the undergirding for this august platform by which John helps so many people each week. And, let it not go without saying, my having the chance to do this show with John every week is one of the joys of my life. I look forward to recording it, I look forward to “editing” it, and, yes, I really look forward to hearing the finished product.
