The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) represents over 100,000 clinicians and students. Each state chapter, specialty section and academy, and special interest group are run by its members, all of whom serve on a volunteer basis. Brian Gilbert, PT, MSPT, Cert. MDT, Cert. DN, and board certified orthopedic clinical specialist, is the current president of APTA Michigan. He talks about, among other things, the importance of giving back to the profession, in ways big or small, as a way of protecting our license and advocating for the best care for our patients.

After this he travelled for a while as an actor, before being accepted into the National Film and Television School where his graduation film, THE DEVOTEE won several awards and got him industry attention. From here he went on to make several feature films such as Sharma and Beyond, The Frog Prince, Vice Versa, Not without my Daughter, Tom and Viv which starred Willem Dafoe and Miranda Richardson and picked up two Oscar and two BAFTA nominations before making WILDE. A Biopic on Oscar Wilde starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law amongst others. In 2004 he began working at the National Film and Television School and became a key figure there as it went on to establish itself as one of the top 15 film schools in the world as said by The Hollywood Reporter. As a lead tutor he has overseen the development of some of the UKs most exciting filmmaking talent such as Nick Rowland, Mahalia Belo and Rose Glass, and he specialises in the art of performance on screen. The transition from alteplase (ALT) to tenecteplase (TNK) in the management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has been an exciting and thoroughly discussed topic within the neurocritical care community. Although debates on the clinical efficacy and safety of TNK for AIS have subsided somewhat in light of recently published data, what remains lacking is a clear “road map” for institutions on how to properly implement the transition in thrombolytics. Sales Expertise using NLPOne of things I love about Brian Gilbert is how he embraces the risk in every human interaction. He has this knowingness about him. The ability to convey that he knows the truth and is willing to share, but it is going to cost you! It will cost you effort, time and possibly money, but in the end you will be better off for it.I first met Brian when he was trying to do hypnosis on hairdressers that weren't confident enough, weren't creative enough and generally did not have enough of what it takes to be good behind the chair. I didn't buy it! A couple sessions to cure your career ills? Not possible!But I am always fascinated by the outrageous, the mystical, the short cut, and so I jumped in with Brian. I bought a series of sessions for him to hypnotize me. I wasn't interested in being a better hairdresser, I was already a great hairdresser, but academics, that was a problem for me.I was always a C student. Yes I have a Liberal Arts BA, but I always struggled in school, even flunked 2nd grade after my parent's divorce. When I decided to get a Masters in Business, I went to Brian and he started to hypnotize me for better grades. It worked. I got all As and one B. Everything I had been reading about the mind being moldable was real. Brian will tell you that there is a close relationship between hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). He owned salons in Chicago, and was selling so much product he was investigated for diversion of Aveda products. Is it moral to hypnotize people into buying your product? Brian will tell you, he isn't selling anything they wouldn't normally buy or what they don't need, further he isn't using hypnosis, he is using NLP.NLP is what some of the best self-help gurus know and love. Tony Robbins is an early user, practitioner and expert.All the best salespeople use NLP whether they know it or not, Brian says. Great sales people are very intuitive about the process, the programming and more. Brian is now out of the salon business, but has an intimate knowledge of how salons function, how creative people behave and what it takes to crank up a sales engine in salons. I have heard this amazing statistic bantered about that most clients buy products within 48 hours after leaving the salon. Why didn't they buy it from the recommending stylist? Brian will say it is because the stylist didn't say and do the right things. The client needs shampoo, why didn't they save themselves the trip? Brian now teaches and entertains corporate sales people in many industries. He is one of those guys who will hypnotize the person who swears they cannot be hypnotized but then he gets them to quack like a duck in front of 500 people. This may be a cost I need to absorb, because I will be that guy quacking. He is coming to my salon to teach all the staff his amazing NLP techniques. The Last Hammer’s Blow for Mark Aspery Welcome to Blacksmither Radio, it’s Episode number 47 and today I have a very special guest to mark a change in the Hammer’s Blow editorship. If you are unfamiliar with what the Hammer’s Blow is, it’s a quarterly publication of technical blacksmith projects offered by the non-profit org ABANA. And today I have Mark Aspery here to talk about the end of his time being editor of the Hammer’s Blow. What we talk about: Mark talks about what it takes to put together one issue. He has asked the submitters to send him their forged example pieces for him to photograph because he already has the equipment and set-up. Then there is a discussion around the wording or text for the article. Mark creates a press ready pdf document in a specific software for editing and producing a magazine. Within each issue, Mark likes to have at around 4 to 5 different articles published. The goal for Mark has been to include beginner, intermediate and expert level forging projects. The Hammer’s Blow editor before Mark Aspery was Brian Gilbert. Brian included a useful tool section, some shop tours, Mark changed the structure a little by focusing on just the smithing. One of the things Mark has learned over the past 5 years is when anyone writes anything down about a specific technique, by the time they are finished writing, they will know more about that subject than they did at the start, it’s an educational process. What’s next for Mark? Two books are on the horizon: one all about locks, latches and hinges, and the second book will be a coffee table book about the ironwork in the Cathedral of Learning building on the campus of University of Pittsburg. Some of the ironwork includes pieces from Samuel Yellin. This winter Mark will have surgery on both of his hands, one at a time, due to a condition called “Viking Hand” (scarring of tissue). We talk about the upcoming ABANA conference in Salt Lake, Utah, July 13 – 16, 2016. The benefits of going to the conference include the social interaction, the demonstrations, the hands-on teaching tents, the tailgate sales and the competitions. The teaching tents will be split into two Each with about ten forging stations, with a mix of coal and propane forges. There will be six half-day teaching sessions and will be staffed by Darryl Nelson, John McClellan, Gerald Boggs, Gerald Franklin and Mark Aspery. Mark is pulling together some lunch time slots in the teaching tent for beginning demonstrators to “cut their teeth” and have a turn at teaching. Each competition will be divided into three levels: Novice – beginning or novice smith, Intermediate/Amateur smith and Open/Professional or strong Chain Making competition on Wednesday - How many links can you forge weld together to make a chain in a 20 minutes? Hints from Mark: Forge welds don’t have to be pretty, if it’s stuck, then it’s good Make a single link, and then make another single link and make the third “middle” link to chain them together. Then repeat that again - so you have two lengths of three links, then make another single link to connect two lengths together. The novice level will probably make 4 to 5 links, the intermediate level will make 6 to links and the open should make around 8 links. Try using the pritchel hole to make the “u” shape and in your shop (ahead of time) figure out how much of the round stock to put down the hole. Thursday’s Competition – Animal Heads with Darryl Nelson who will demonstrate a bear head just before the competition starts. Novice level – Create a two-dimensional animal head, tooling and 1 ¼ x ¼ flat bar provided Intermediate level – Create a three-dimensional animal head from 1-inch square stock, tooling provided. Open mouth optional. Open level – Create a three-dimensional animal head from 1 ½” square stock. Provide your own Friday's Competition – Tong making with John McClellan Novice level – Create simple twist Jaw tongs from 3/8” by 3/4” flat bar. Tongs should be able to hold ¼” flat bar. Tooling and material provided punched rivet hole and factory rivet. Intermediate level – Create scrolling tongs forged from 1” by 3/8” flat bar. Punched rivet hole and factory rivet. Open level – Create flat or open jaw tongs to hold ¼” flat bar. ¾” stock will be provided with a ½’” round bar for forge welding on reins, extra points for this! Punched rivet hole, factory rivet or handmade rivet from 3/8” bar. Mark’s tip on bringing punches for punching the rivet hole is to bring two punches. Buff the working ends so they are shiny, then drop the punch into a 3/8 inch hole to produce a ring of color on your punch. This will be the indicator of when your punched hole reaches the 3/8’s dimension. Another tip is to dress the outside top part of the reigns first with your hammer, so when you dress the inside part of the reign, the outside is then being flattened by the face of the anvil. Advice on making your own rivet for the tongs, bring a ½” nut to place under the tongs while forging the top of the rivet head. The length of the rivet should be ½” above the boss, ¾” for the width of the boss and another ½” below the boss. I’m going to start scoping and I have a plan to scope from the conference and competitions! So What is scoping? This episode was recorded in London. Virginia Gilbert is an award winning author and filmmaker. She is currently premiering her new film 'A long way from home' which she wrote and directed at film festivals all over the world. This conversation was recorded immediately following her showing of this new film at the Dublin film festival. I met Virginia many years ago when I worked with her husband, Keith Farnan at the Laughter Lounge in Dublin. Since then they have become close friends. I had been friends with Virginia for several years before I found out that her father was acclaimed filmmaker Brian Gilbert who made what I consider the greatest film about Oscar Wilde ever made with Stephen Fry in the lead role. Virginia was a young adult helping her father on the set in Dublin and this experience inspired her to go to Trinity University in Dublin the same as Oscar. In this conversation we talk about the joys and sorrows of the film making process, her secret for inspiration when she is writing and how to embrace the spirit of Oscar Wilde. This episode is the embodiment of girl power because Virginia Gilbert kicks so much ass in her world and inspires me how she takes her creations of books and turns them into films. She is one of my favorite people to mentally joust with and to talk with about everything under the sun. It is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Virginia Gilbert.
