Glazer discusses his beginnings in healthcare starting back in 1976 by getting a job as a clerk in NYU medical center in the grants and contracts division, helping physicians fill out grants for their medical research. During his nine years at NYU he went and got his masters degree in public administration with a focus on healthcare, and takes us through how these early jobs and his further promotions, led him to ENT & Allergy Associates LLP. Next, Glazer explains what he looks for in recruiting otolaryngologists to his practice and advice for resident physicians looking to apply to the job market. Residents should take into consideration different practices and the importance of networking and meeting individuals at a particular practice. Glazer tries to meet candidates in their PGY2 and PGY3 years to get to know them and learn more about why they are interested in being in the NYC region. He also discusses some of the key questions that residents should be asking during the interview trail and discusses the importance of transparency in learning more about a practice. Lastly, Glazer talks about strategies that he has found to be successful in recruiting new otolaryngologists to his practice and discusses COVID has changed recruitment and how physicians can manage burnout post-COVID. --- RESOURCES ENT and Allergy Associates, LLP: https://www.entandallergy.com

Repost: One Goal, Many Paths - Next Steps After Not Matching feat. Drs. Brian Fung, Beju Shah, David Vu, Tony Dao Today's episode is a REPOST to 2019's special episode about next steps after not matching. The four of us have had different stories on what we did after not matching and want to let you know that it's OKAY. There's still Phase 2, there's still other pathways to get to where you want to go. Original Shownotes from 2019: This year, over 4000 thousand applicants matched for a PGY1 or PGY2 pharmacy residency program. These individuals are moving on to an amazing opportunity where they can continue to expand their skillset and evolve their knowledge. But… over 2000 applicants did NOT get this chance. If you were one of the individuals who did not match, know that you are NOT alone. Know that it's OKAY. Know that there are MANY different pathways to achieve your end goal. On today's special episode, Dr. Beju Shah, Dr. Brian Fung, Dr. David Vu, and Dr. Tony Dao all share their stories of how they did not match for residency and talk about the next steps they took that eventually navigated them into their DREAM careers. We encourage anyone who's listening to share your story and let everyone know that they are NOT alone. Want to stay inspired with content tailored specifically to IMG's looking to create their medical success story? Sign up for the IMG Roadmap Newsletter so you never miss a beat! ***** Is applying to various specialties despite your dream of landing a residency in a particular field always the best idea? Radiology resident Dr. Maham Siddique is here today to share her story of determination and not taking no for an answer! Here are some of the highlights of her journey: Dr. Maham was born and raised in Pakistan, where she attended the Aga Khan University and discovered her love for Radiology before her graduation in 2016. While in medical school, she was given the option to pursue clinical rotations in the US. By completing her electives in the US, she was able to see how Radiology was conducted there, and realized the need for research items when applying into residency in this field. As such, she moved to NYC 4 years ago on a J1 research visa, where she engaged in lung and breast cancer research in Radiology for 3 years. She then applied to Radiology residency in 2020 after attaining her green card, thereby classifying her as a US IMG. How was Dr. Maham able to find research opportunities? She was deliberate and transparent with her research program coordinators about wanting to get into Radiology residency. She was determined, focused on her goals and would not settle for any other field. She built connections and strengthened her network through demonstrable seriousness about the field. Eventually she was able to land a Radiology residency position at her top ranked institution in NYC. These are her tips for applying into Radiology residency: Ask yourself whether you like the field enough to practice it for the rest of your life. Look at the official statistics released by organizations such as the NRMP and ensure that your step scores (above 245 for Radiology), number and quality of LORs, and research items correspond with those of the successful candidates in the years prior. Ensure that you analyze the structure of the Radiology residency: Take into account that it is advanced, meaning that it starts at the PGY2 level, and the candidate is expected to find their own intern year. Dr. Maham herself completed her intern year in Internal Medicine, applied with 3 LORs. She then applied into Radiology with 4 Radiology LORs and 1 Internal Medicine LOR. Your personal statement is the one document that is 100% in your control - make it count! How can we maneuver the challenges we face as IMGs? Your step score is just one important part of the application. There are other parts that you can work on to compensate for it. Commit fully to the dream and put in the necessary work, time and effort investments to achieve it. Don't listen to everybody's opinion–take the time to form your own ideas. You can reach out to Dr. Maham via email maham_siddique@hotmail.com and her Instagram @maham_s_rana. We invite Megan Smith, a faculty member and residency program director for one of the largest community pharmacy residencies in the united states, https://pharmacy.uams.edu/residency/ (the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency), BACK for another episode to discuss the biggest questions surrounding community pharmacy residencies. Community pharmacy residencies can be a spring board for multiple different career paths. One of those paths may involve more research and a fellowship is a perfect way to expand your research and scholarship skills to the next level. Another way may be specialized clinical training in a PGY2 program. In this episode, we explore one of the ways you can get into a specialized training and why you may consider pursing specialized training after PGY1 community-based pharmacy residency. Questions we ask: In your opinion, how common is it for PGY1 community pharmacy residents to go into community residency for the purpose of further training Are there types of PGY2 training, or other post-graduate experiences that graduates are more qualified for? Like-wise, are there specialties that are closed, or unavailable to PGY1 graduates, outside of obvious ones like critical care.  If I was a candidate, what advice would you give me while pursing or actively completing a PGY1 if that's what I wanted to do (i.e. fellowship)? Are there certain fellowships or fellowship structures that compliment PGy1 community pharmacy resident graduates? Key Take-Aways: Think about what the NEXT BEST STEP is for you. You may not know where you want to end up, but based on what you like, determine what the next best step is and pursue that. Eventually you'll wind up where you need to be. Completing a community-based PGY1 residency means you are eligible for any PGY2 program. The most common program pursued is an ambulatory care PGY2. Even though you are eligible for PGY2s in things like Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, it may be difficult to show the expertise needed to be successful in those types of programs. The easiest thing to do if you are interested in additional training is to just go ahead an apply. There is a lot of imposter syndrome and candidates thinking they are not qualified enough when in fact they are. She spent 5 years working as a Clinical Oncology Pharmacist specializing in Oral Chemotherapy Medication Therapy Management for Geisinger Health Care System and over that time, grew the clinic to over 1000 patients. She also was the PGY2 Oncology Residency Program Director and a clinical researcher. As a high achiever, over time, Jenna became burnt out, unhappy in her career and life, and knew things needed to change. She was able to find herself again through personal discovery and holistic healing methods. Naturally, she wanted to share this knowledge with her patients but found that the traditional Western Medicine structure didn't allow for the combination of all of her knowledge. Dr. Carmichael now runs her own practice as a Holistic Oncology Pharmacist and Health Coach, Wobbly Arrow Wellness. She works virtually with women on the cancer journey looking for a different perspective on wellness. She combines her knowledge in the oncology space along with holistic healing methods of meditation, reiki, and yoga to help empower her clients to choose the path that works the best for their goals. We invite Megan Smith, a faculty member and residency program director for one of the largest community pharmacy residencies in the united states, https://pharmacy.uams.edu/residency/ (the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency), to discuss the biggest questions surrounding community pharmacy residencies. Community pharmacy residencies can either be accredited or unaccredited. We focus mainly on accredited programs in this episode. When a community pharmacy residency is accredited, it is jointly accredited by ASHP and APhA. If you feel like you still need that structure and group of people pushing you to advance your skills, then community pharmacy PGY1 can provide that for you. Key Take-Aways: Like pharmacy practice PGY1's, community pharmacy residencies also pack 3-5 years of clinical experience into one year Completing an accredited PGY1 community pharmacy residency makes you eligible for any PGY2 residency. Being eligible is not the same as being qualified, you may struggle going from community residency to a critical care PGY2, but there are still lots of PGY2's that you can explore, the most popular being ambulatory care. Community pharmacy residencies are a great way to hone your skills and set yourself up for leadership positions or other specialized training Each community pharmacy residency is designed differently, so be sure to research each one thoroughly to see what type of experiences you get. Programs can be single site, multi-site, hospital based, specialty based, have ambulatory care components, different administration components, and much much more! If you are interested in academia, community pharmacy residencies get you in front of students and in the classroom quickly when they are associated with a college of pharmacy. Community Pharmacy PGY1's will still have a staffing component. This is going to be different based on the program, but generally it will be about 1 day a week and even though you are staffing you are still advancing your skills that you are learning outside of the staffing component.
