Words and Nerds: Authors, books and literature.

She breathes deeply, trying to quell the rising sense of panic. A detective came to her home, drugged her and kidnapped her. She tries to make sense of it, to imagine alternatives, but only one conclusion is possible: it's the past, come to claim her. Martin Scarsden's new life seems perfect, right up until the moment it's shattered by a voicemail: a single scream, abruptly cut off, from his partner Mandalay Blonde. Racing home, he finds an unconscious man sprawled on the floor and Mandy gone. Someone has abducted her. But who, and why? So starts a twisting tale of intrigue and danger, as Martin probes the past of the woman he loves, a woman who has buried her former life so deep she has never mentioned it. And for the first time, Mandy finds denial impossible, now the body of a mystery man has been discovered, a man whose name she doesn't know, a man she was engaged to marry when he died. It's time to face her demons once and for all; it's time she learned how to trust. Set in a Sydney riven with corruption and nepotism, privilege and power, Trust is the third riveting novel from award-winning and internationally acclaimed writer Chris Hammer. 'The best Australian crime novel since Peter Temple's The Broken Shore.' - The Times on Silver

Thank you to everyone that participated and made the Summer of Love a wonderful AIE event. If you missed some of the events, here are a few videos we found taken by our wonderful guildies. FFXIV - By Ryooshi - https://youtu.be/RiqEmSWGM5Q (Rememberance Day) WoW - By Joey Image - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/164656428 (Running of the Beef) Also for a ton of screenshots, check out the #AIEGuild hashtag on Twitter https://twitter.com/hashtag/AIEGuild WoW There was a live Q&A with Ion Hazzikostas (no spoilers) over general WoW topics and some 7.3 specific information. It looks like Legion is becoming more alt friendly and some catch up mechanisms are in place for those just hitting 110. The time gate for the 3rd relic slot will automatically be removed in 7.3. In addition, players will not have to do the Broken Shore questline to unlock Concordance of the Legionfall and the other new traits. Artifact Knowledge is also getting changes and will be global across all player. The week of the patch, all players will be Artifact Knowledge 41. There are new missions, equipment and chests on Argus that can shoot Champions all the way to item level 900. Reusable Augment Runes coming from Exalted Army of the Light, the Lightforged Augment Rune. http://www.wowhead.com/news=269167/liveblog-of-the-q-a-with-ion-hazzikostas SWTOR SWTOR Escape Pod Cast 205: To Merge Or Not To Merge http://www.newoverlords.com/swtor-escape-pod-cast-205-to-merge-or-not-to-merge/ This week @AIESema, @MaxTheGrey and Astromech EPC-205 talk about the current server merge discussion, pros and cons, ways to merge, alternatives, and our views. Also the Mandatory Fun Night, on Tuesday, will be on the Republic side this week. FFXIV Moonfire Fair event begins this Tuesday! http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/special/2017/Moonfire_Faire/ The quest begins in the Limsa upper decks and you can get a full seasonal outfit and some housing items while the event is live. STO Just a quick update from Grebiss on the forums http://forum.myextralife.com/topic/57452-status-of-the-fleet/ We have completed the required work to allow us to start the Shipyard Tier IV upgrades. This will unlock many more fleet ships for everyone to purchase. And once we complete the shipyards, I believe we will be able to upgrade the starbase to tier IV as well. I may hold on the Starbase tier IV to keep resources flowing into fleet ship consumables, so everyone can buy their desired fleet ships. The Research Lab is also making big progress and one of the two branches is nearing completion as well with the other branch over halfway through tier 3. Congratulations to Alisaunder and Suchghost!   Blue Recluse Podcast Molten Core Rehash Bash   Location: Molten Core: Ragnaros Lair Ragnaros pops up from time to time. Fireballs characters if they use stealth. “BY FIRE BE PURGED!” Sulfuron Hammer tossed onto arena field. AOE damage in the location it lands in. The hammer creates line of sight 3 Control points, 1 active at a time that spawn, Hold the point Ragnaros will fight for you if you fill the bar up to 100% for 10 seconds. Instead healing debuff, lava fills the arena slowly over time. Deals damage. Increases over time. Winning Rewards: Coloured reskin of a T1 piece, over 5 NEW colours, never before seen in game.   TankThatReb (Darkmoon Herald Podcast)  Molten floor Lava covers random parts of the floor that ticks for 20% of health Arena has a ramp/bridge that players can get knocked off of   Alisaunder   I agree!  I would like to see more storyline in my PvP options, like the continuation of the arrival at Stormheim, with two gun ships sailing through the clouds with Genn or some other high ranking Alliance and Horde leader giving us a speech while we wait to start and test out the cannons a bit. The clouds part! Grapples get thrown! Cannons roar! People are swinging, grappling or jump packing across to the enemy ships, defending their own ships to a last man standing finish. Or NPC rezzers in the bowels of the ship revive the dead and it's on to kill Genn if you can. Winners (or survivors) can receive a cut scene receiving a medal and some kind of achievement. Maybe an honorary title or some other RP perk like become an honorary member of the Gilnean forces.   Zullell I've got a suggestion for a PVP battleground that would be Legion themed. I don't think Blizz has made enough use of those cool flying Legion disks on the Broken Shore yet. I think it would be really cool to have a sort of "capture the node via flying" sort of battleground. You could have the Sentinax as the main mid point, and maybe two other Legion ships as secondary points kind of like in Eye of the Storm. But in order to get to them, you need the flying disks, and you could gain a special ability and have combat on the disks. Plus, wouldn't it be cool to get an achievement for knocking another playing off said disk :D.  You would also have basic combat and buffs on the "ground" of the island as well, but the main thing would be surviving flying to the ship and successfully capturing it for your side.   "Suchghost / Soniclol"  The idea is there and hopefully from the picture you can see the map layout. Again, the layout is also very simple and not fleshed out at all. Just enough time to make the basic layout at its core. The map itself is 100% fair on either team because it is completely symmetrical.  There is a bottom floor and ramps that leads to an upper floor. Very similar to Blades Edge Arena but less complicated.  Blades edge is a cool map because of the dynamics that are involved with the different floor levels. However that map is kind of complicated in nature as it has 6 ramps leading to the upper level and a bunch of line of site location down below.  My new design render has only 2 ramps up and a couple line of site locations down below. Which would be great in my opinion.  The theme for the map can be literally anything but I think a cool dark rocky texture with bright green lava and fire would fit a demon/legion theme. Call this map "Demon's Stand" or something cheesy like that. Would be located somewhere in the new demon hunter zone.  Can be added to the normal PvP arena queue.     ACELANNA   Arena design: Open concept with areas that have LOS like. Inside the arena there are random pop up boost icons. Red boost will stun you as well and make you immune to damage. This allows the other person to heal and move while possibly gaining an advantage. Yellow boost will slow you down while increasing your damage output. Green boost will increase your speed while increasing the damage you take from other players. You take the negative with the positive or you can maneuver your opponents to gain the boost. Black rook hold, Nagrand, Shadopan arena and the big open desert arena platforms would be good for this boost system.   Gerissar Lore This arena is set in Naga lore.  It is on the shore of zone (to be determined), in old elf ruins.  The top of the walls will be filled with Naga watching their prisoners fight to their deaths, with Lady Vash occasionally watching (she will do taunts like the Ogre King in Nagrand Arena).  The dead are used to feed the Kraken. Topology This arena will be a half circle facing the sea.  Teams start in cells on either side of the arena.  There is a rock outcropping in the sand on one side, and a fallen pillar on the other (gives LOS points).  The arena does extend partially into the sea, but the way is blocked by a giant net.  Players can use the water to avoid AOE ground effects, but the run speed is slowed.  Also, should Blizz enable this, the water splashes will reveal the location of a stealthed/invisible player (not fully, but you can see where their feet are) Extras If players stay after the match ends, Kraken tentacles will pull the bodies of the dead out to sea. Picture   Andallyn My arena is set in Suramar City. Both teams have a long bridge they will be battling on amidst a legion assault on the city. The bridge is placed at height, adorned with ancient mana and mystical foliage, and is the access point to the inner sanctum of Suramar City a crucial edge for the legion and in that same vein an almost fatal blow to Suramar. A unique tactic will be available to the contestants consisting of tightly packed groups or “surimarian” forces and legion forces that will move. Essentially these function as moving pillars for LoS which requires more than a rinse and repeat tactic and mixes a little strategy and RNG into the mix. Additionally it should give the feel that you are not the only ones doing battle and that you really are fighting alongside the armies as legion forces will take out the forces of suramar and vice-versa as time goes on. Windstead My first arena is totally a troll with the long hallway and portals on each side so that as a frost mage i can kite you forever but that is not a very fair arena for a lot of reason so my realistic arena would be based in the great dark beyond think star auger fight in night hold the first stage outer space the map will last five mins and have a ton of line of sight and places to hide from your opponents after that there will be an announcement and the zone will planer shift meteors will smash the outer edge of the platform which you can fall off of to your death now you will be in a fel style zone there will be far less places to hide but still some that can be used if the match last 10 min then once again an announcement will be made and a giant demon will smash his fist into the center of the arena there is now no longer any place to hide it is a open area no pillars no los and the arena in the twisting nether think eye of the storm style now has walls there is no escape and the match should finish quickly but if the match continues to the 15 min mark an old god will appear and kill everyone and it's a draw. On this episode of The AIE Podcast... Mew: We are talking to ourselves Mkallah: There are Rusty Ashes of Creation? Tetsemi:: Keeping up with Broken Shore Mew: Are you ready for Stormblood? Mkallah: We have Captain Cybyl's STO update All that and more coming up right now... Podcast Audio Raw Video http://youtu.be/gVRCyAGntoQ Open Welcome to episode #276 of the the podcast celebrating the Alea Iacta Est gaming community, the die has been podcast. This is Tetsemi. To my left is Mewkow (Greetings, Gamers). And, to my right is Mkallah (Hey, guys, there are dark chocolate fig cakes in the guild kitchen). We are our own guests again! Ok, we'll be digging into News shortly, but first, let's talk about what we have been up to. Tetsemi Got through the Druid Class Order Hall and Artifact Quest line (Tank/Melee DPS) and just getting caught up on the Broken Shore quest line (stuck on the 12 wq's). Once I get caught up, I'll start on my Rogue. Also have been working on my crafting a bit, it's very much a slog on alts, compared to previous expansions, so not focusing too much on it. Dabbling in SWTOR a bit, checking out Iokath and it's dailies. Trying to find time to get into either MFN or an operation, but days have been very busy. Mewkow - In FF14, finally got my Bard to ilevel 230, so I'll be running the final dungeons for Heavensward and will be ready for the expansion. Once that is done, I'll try to grind a bit of Gil, and level gathering and crafting classes to try and have those ready for Stormblood. FC has been quite active lately, likely due to expansion hype. Sadly, new players can't join us on Gilgamesh, but lots of returning players are appearing. I will be joining in the Early Access play on the 16th, which should give me plenty of time to get pretty far in before WoW drops the Tomb in everyone's laps. Not very subtle of them to have it come out on the same day as Stormblood, which has been a known date for quite a while. Thoughts? And speaking of WoW, paladin is 110 now and with the partial catch-up of artifact knowledge, and some AP grinding, is closely catching up to my warrior so I can have the two tank types ready for Tomb. Both my FERT druid and worgen warrior are nearly at knowledge level 40 and a couple traits away from concordance. Once I get them to 40, I'll be sharing the knowledge love around to my many alts. My belf rogue is waiting for the knowledge boost before going too much deeper in that story. In SWTOR, I have been moving forward in the Fallen Empire storyline with my Bounty Hunter. In non MMO gaming, I am currently exploring the many mods that are being made for Fallout 4, now that the game is in a more final state as far as DLC goes. There are some impressive DLC like mods out there, adding tons of story and lore to the game. Some even feature voice acting, and add new factions to the game, like the Enclave from Fallout 3, and even NCR armor and power armors from other groups. A while back, I managed to get my hands on an Oculus, and I'm seeing the promise coming there. I saw a new controller being kickstarted that will bring ‘touch' to VR by having haptic feedback in a glove. The fact that it is aiming to be compatible with all the existing VR headsets is promising because the more VR becomes interchangeable in tech, the strong it becomes as a whole. For a recent real life leveling event, I got a nintendo switch. It came with the new Mario Kart, which will allow me to participate in some of the workplace gaming that's been going on lately amongst the switch owners. It's a smooth experience on the built in screen, handles nicely. I'll be trying the new Zelda game next which I hear is rather good. The only sore spot I've seen with it is inventory management and equipment breakage. Oh, and suddenly losing all sense of time while playing it. Mkallah- Phoenix Comicon- our time and misadventures. (some guildies were nice enough to come by and say Hi!

Enjoyed the story. Waiting for the DLC. Now diving back into WoW more full time to catch up on 7.2 content. Not too far from getting revered rep for the final piece of pathfinder 2 flying. Will now be able to dig into the new SWTOR content since the wow rep grind is a dailies thing. Tetsemi - FERT Killed Gul'dan on Normal making this the second raid content, this expansion, we've killed before it has been nerfed or the new raid content has launched. Tetsemi has unlocked flying and is halfway to exalted with the Armies of Legionfall. I've completed the Class story line on my Mage and Death Knight as well, and working through the Paladin storyline, which is really good so far, as we've invaded a demon homeworld providing a daring rescue of our forces and inducted the first Night Elf Priest into the Paladinhood. Hopefully Tyrande didn't notice we recruited one of her priests. Got through the initial storyline on Iokath with my Pub Trooper and Imp Sorc, each ultimately deciding to stick with their original faction, although the decision for my Trooper was more difficult than I had thought. When I get to the Bounty Hunter, Smuggler, and Agent it'll be interesting to see which direction I got. I'm planning on having at least one or two characters go cross-faction just to see how it plays out and fits into their storyline. This week we are joined by special guests Abovan who is here to talk to give us an update on AIE in FFXIV. Welcome! Ok, we'll be digging into Final Fantasy XIV shortly, but first, let's cover this week's news... AIE News Community Are you having trouble keeping track of what AIE is doing in all the games we play? Well glance over at the Guild Calendar and take a look at all the activities! https://wiki.aie-guild.org/index.php?title=Guild_Calendar Imperium Ludi Galadeon posted in the forums to let everyone know about a new MMO in development called Ashes of Creation. It's a player driven content MMO with the content unlocked by player activities around hidden nodes in the game. A 6+ minute video of the basic concepts is also in the forum post. Let us know what you think in the forums post below. http://forum.myextralife.com/topic/57396-ashes-of-creation/ WoW Follow up from our last podcast, Noob Raid did invade Trials of Valor raid and were able to knock down the first two bosses in the Trial, way to go raiders! Patch 7.2 has been out for a bit now and players have unlocked two of the three towers and experienced what was offered by each. Most feedback seen, seem to indicate the solo scenario for your class weapons was very difficult and higher level gear is going to be needed for most folks to complete the scenario, also the extra loot chest (the random buff) did provide extra loot but I think folks were looking for a bit more from it. The Nether Disruptor was completed and brought with it a world boss that has a chance to drop loot (I received a ilevel 900 Blood Relic for my tanking weapon) as well as an item that gives you Artifact Power (with level 28 AK it gives 1.2 million AP). You also get the buff that if you spend a bonus roll token and don't get bonus loot, there is a chance the token will be refunded to you. More Unstable Nether Portals are created while this tower is up and there is a chance to get Artifactor Commendations which are used in crafting legendaries by the three armor class professions (Tailoring, Leatherworking, and Blacksmithing). Legion Invasions are also active, but the requirement to complete all four has been removed from Pathfinder Part 2 (to unlock flying in Legion), so the requirements now are just Pathfinder Part 1, Exploring all of Broken Shore, and getting getting to Revered reputation with Armies of Legionfall. Getting reputation with Legionfall is achieved through Work Orders in your class hall, completing the World Quests that are up on the Broken Shore and turning in Building Supplies for Towers. Legion Invasions does not give Legionfall reputation, but they do help with the reputation for the zone they are in. That Stack Of Books with Nancy Pearl and Steve Scher - The House of Podcasts

For some readers, the love of mysteries started with Nancy Drew. Here are some suggestions for mystery readers from Nancy Pearl and the folks around the table at the Bryant Corner Cafe. Nancy Pearl says her enjoyment of mysteries is limited by some wince-worthy writing. But she avoids those writers. The books Nancy recommended and some suggestions from the rest of us around the table at The Bryant Corner Café, 32nd and 65th in the Bryant neighborhood in Seattle. We will be there next Tuesday, June 2nd at 3:15. Drop on by. William McIlvanney, The Laidlaw TrilogyMcIlvanney was the founder of what’s now being called Scottish Noir, and inspired writers Denise Mina, Val McDermid, Ian RankinIsraeli novelist Batya Gur and her Michael Ohayon series Tana French, Dublin Murder Squad seriesThe authors of the sub genre, mediaeval mysteries (suggested by Judy)Ellis PetersMargaret FraserC.J. SansomeHenning Mankell, Inspector Wallander series  (suggested by Bill, though sometimes a little to gruesome for Nancy)Sue Grafton, Kinsey Milhone (we are up to X in the alphabet.)Faye Kellerman, (a few books featuring the Orthodox Jewish Rina Lazarus and police detective Peter Decker. These were a favorite of Nancy’s father.)Peter Temple (we can’t leave a mystery discussion without Nancy touting the Australian writer and the book, “The Broken Shore.)H. R. F Keating, Inspector Ghote series. Rose liked S.J. Gazan, The Dinosaur FeatherRobin likes Alexander Mccall Smith, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. (Though Nancy finds them less mysteries than character driven stories. She isn’t sure they even belong in the mystery section and are an example of why she chaffs at putting books into different categories. ) Judy calls out Sherlock Holmes for re-reading. Nancy calls for Agatha Christie, even if, as she says, all the characters are just collections of ticks. For good mysteries with Roman themes, Keith enjoys the Flavia Alba mysteries by Lindsey DavisFor good writing and good mysteries with contemporary themes, Nancy recommends Walter Mosley and his Easy Rawlins series.Donna Leon’s Inspector Brunetti series and Andrea Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano series are Steve’s favorites. Also, he suggests Pierre Magnan, “Death in the Truffle Woods.” Of course that takes us to Martin Walker’s Bruno, Chief of Police novels, also set in France. We mentioned that Soho Press has a Soho Crime imprint of interesting translated foreign mysteries.  Also, here is a page from Dartmouth College that list mysteries from other lands. Other than the U.S. that is.What are your favorite mysteries by non-American writers?  Share some titles with us, so we can read the mysteries folks across the world enjoy.
