Theu are the ones who win every time there is money of good prizes up for grabs. Well this week Those Weekend Golf Guys discuss sandbagging in all its forms. How to spot it. How to do it. How to do it so you don't look so suspicious! But remember, a handicap does not reflect your average score over par. It reflects your possible BEST score! The USGA has found that if a player plays 50 rounds in a year, he will average scoring what his handicap would dictate only once. That's right! Only once in 50 rounds. For a series that only lasted for twenty episodes, it is very fondly remembered as being the very pinnacle of what a series set in the world of espionage could be, and it might have carried on a lot longer if it wasn't for the untimely disappearance – in very mysterious circumstances – of its creator and main screenwriter IAN MACKINTOSH. As you'll discover in our conversation, it's a series that both WARREN and I enjoy very much, so much so in fact that we do get rather excitable at times and SPOILER ALERT! We do give away several significant plot points from this forty year old series as we get somewhat carried away – not (for once) in a pair of diplomatic bags – but by our own enthusiasm, so don't say I didn't warn you, but if you feel like you need to look away now, I perfectly understand, and won't be sending an operative round to deal with you in some kind of a diplomatic exchange. In this episode I have Mike Currier back to cover a couple of topics that were top of mind with me. Mike is a Jiu Jitsu black belt under fourth degree black belt Professor Michael Chapman. Mike began training gymnastics at age 10 and was a nationally ranked gymnast until 1999. After retiring from competitive gymnastics, Mike transitioned into coaching. He has coached for multiple gyms including the world famous Camp Woodward in Woodward, PA. While living in Pennsylvania, Mike also worked as an assistant gymnastics coach for Penn State University. He began training Jiu Jitsu in 2014 and started coaching movement classes shortly after. In December of 2015, Mike opened his first Jiu Jitsu academy in Sherwood, Oregon. In June 2018, Mike and his wife Samantha (a BJJ brown belt) and their son moved to Fountain Hills, AZ where they opened Impact Fountain Hills. Impact was the first Jiu Jitsu academy in Fountain Hills and remains the only tumbling/parkour gym in the area. This episode focuses on two topics I wanted to explore. One is the topic of belt testing which arose from my conversation on another podcast. The other topic revolves around a Reddit response from one of the Mendes brothers repudiating accusations that Cole Abate was a sandbagger due to his being a 16 year old blue belt who routinely beats black belts. I still feel no real resolution on either topic and am left with even more questions to explore in further episodes. In terms of the belt testing topic, I can respect both positions for and against them. One thing to note, belt tests vary widely (please note I am a novice to the topic) but some of you have told me these “tests” are largely ceremonial and that the decision to belt someone up has already been made in advance. Others have said they are indeed technique tests that result in a pass/fail scenario. But the vast majority have told me their academies do not test and that it is the discretion of the instructor to award a belt or not and that process varies widely in itself. As for the Cole Abate controversy, to me, this seems to be more a topic of the subjective nature of “belting” itself. The self imposed age limitations, various standards, and there is no ubiquitous agreed upon logic to the whole thing which results in even more questions. Additionally with the advances in Bjj information, teaching techniques, nutrition, starting younger and training protocols. it makes me wonder if we need different tracks for practitioners ie amateur, minor/farm league division, and a professional track? Or something to that effect. Ok, some housekeeping notes: This was a last minute interview so you may hear me and Mike refer to that without giving context. Every golf club has a sandbagging story. The 26 handicap who miraculously shoots 85. The 12 who flirts with even par. It is the rare handicap event in which certain golfers are  better than advertised, which is great news for their partners, and a source of outrage for everyone else. In this episode of Local Knowledge, host Daniel Rapaport dives into the complicated world of the sandbagger, including some of the tactics they employ to game the handicap system to their advantage. At the other end of the spectrum, we also look at vanity handicappers who turn out to be worse than their number suggests. Audrey in her own words..   In November 2013, I made a bit of running history when I became the first Scot (and second British woman) to complete my Antarctic Odyssey — the Antarctic Ice Marathon and Antarctic 100km double — in the space of three days, and this is one of my greatest achievement.   Crossing that 100k finish line marked both the end of a journey and the beginning of a new one...   In 2015, I completed the North Pole Marathon and became the first Scot to complete all 3 polar races. I also added the West Highland Way Race and West Highland Way Triple Crown and 100 miles in 24 hours at the Glenmore 24 hour trail race to my tally of achievements.   In January 2017 I became the first person to complete the double extreme marathon event of the Namibian Sand Marathon and Genghis Khan Ice Marathon: 36 degrees to minus 32 degrees.   During this podcast we will be focused on what Audrey has been up to since 2017. Audrey will share more details about the double extreme marathon event of the Namibian Sand Marathon and Genghis Khan Ice Marathon. Another week - another Zwiftcast. Simon, Shane and Nathan unite to discuss the boom times on Zwift as the platform provides welcome relief from the burden of the virus. This is a short term fix which Zwift hopes to implement within days (for testing) and weeks (for a full roll out) The approach sees four types of warnings/sanctions applied to Sandbaggers . . . listen to a full explanation of the system from senior game guy Jordan Rapp. The Zwiftcasters move on to discuss the measures Zwift is putting in place to prioritise the stability of the platform as truly enormous numbers flood the events which are proving so popular as Zwifters look for a challenge to distract them from the concerns caused by the pandemic. One of the biggest rides has been with Mark Cavendish - and Simon talks to a Zwifter who got picked out of 3,500 riders for a live Insta chat with the Manx Missile himself. Later the podcasters speculate about the cryptic clues on a new feature outlined in the latest update and wonder whether some interesting development work on enhanced Power Ups described by Jordan may offer further hints. Sandbaggers will be sorry when they take part in the new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). It's a serious test of strength, stamina and speed. I can't help you with lack of motivation, but if you're willing to do the work, this plan will help you avoid a November Golf ("no go") on test day. Appreciation for the Armed Forces A Weekend Warrior friend of mine (and VIGOR Training member) showed me the new Army Combat Fitness Test, and asked how she might modify her training to be ready on test day. I've wanted to do more to support active and retired military and first responders for a while, so her question got me thinking... "What if I could offer a 12-week training plan that will help soldiers not only pass the ACFT, but dominate it?" Not only that. What if by the end, I could lead them all to fighting fit? That's what led to the VIGOR Training ACFT Program, which I'll outline below. I have much appreciation for those who serve, or who have served in the military and as first responders. My father served in the Army in Vietnam, and later in the National Guard. His last day in the field was May 27, 1969. This is the Red Warriors Battle Report May 27, 1969. The interesting thing is, I don't believe my dad ever showed me the battle report. I found it when I Googled my dad (Warren Nikkola) for this article. It's not something he talks much about, and to my knowledge, has never mentioned his Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Valor, and Silver Star outside of the one time I found them in a drawer at home. In his mid-70's today, retired Captain Warren Nikkola still has shrapnel in his back from that battle, May 27, 1969. I've never served myself. Unfortunately, the thought never crossed my mind when I was thinking of college. As I've gotten older, though, I've felt a greater desire to do more for those who do serve, as well as those who've served and sacrificed. I hope by offering this training plan for free to those who serve, it can be a very small way to give back. Beginning this month and going forward, 10% of VIGOR Training revenues will also go to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which is one of the most-respected military-related foundations. With all that said, I hope this article and training program serves as a small token of appreciation for those who put themselves in harm's way. Test Deadlift 3-Rep Max (Trap Bar) https://youtu.be/Eef09p0NIrM This test is completed with a trap bar/hex bar. You'll have 10 minutes to warm up on the deadlift, increasing your load and preparing to lift the weight you've chosen for your 3-rep max, before the ACFT officially begins. This isn't a lazy 3RM, where you lift the bar, and then drop it on the ground before you pick it up again. You hang onto the bar throughout the set, and kiss the ground with the plates between reps. The deadlift test takes a total of five minutes, and then you'll get a 2-minute break, before hitting the next station. 2.
